- When it comes to comparing high end roto molded coolers like the Yeti Tundra or Pelican ProGear Elite, there is much debate on which is the better purchase. It is an understandable comparison considering the price point of these coolers.
Although the Pelican ProGear Elite 45 Q coolers weighs in at 10 lbs heavier than the Yeti Tundra 45 (actually 37 Q) we can say its worth the weight. The Pelican held ice significantly better than the Yeti Tundra. Pelican advertises 10 day Ice Retention. We tested 5 days of moderate use, and could see how the Pelican is capable of lasting 10 days of ice retention.
Head to head, the Pelican holds ice longer and is much cheaper than the Yeti Tundra and 7 quarts larger in size. However, the Pelican is 10 pounds heavier on our model with wheels and a trolly system.

Of course the Pelican weighs more, it has wheels, more substantial handles, and a higher capacity. The Pelican lifetime warranty vs. the Yeti 5 year warranty also speaks volumes about the integrity of the products.
Big Pelican fan boy here. Owned many cases through the years. That said I would caution about the "lifetime" warranty. Pelican is very specific in what they consider use vs abuse and as an owner there is a lot of gray area that is not covered by the warranty. They just don't give out free replacement units or parts if there is any question about how the damage occurred. Doesn't change my view of them as a company but it is something to be aware of
Big seller for me is Pelican's lifetime warranty vs Yeti's 5 year. Standing by your product says a lot.
Pelican gear has always been expensive, however, it's one brand that delivers the quality. Had cases in the military and as civilian for years. Yeti is a waste of money. If you have to have one, buy the RTIC. Same cooler, half the price. (Designers were connected).
Pelican all the way for me. I own some pelican cases and they are built like tanks! I think its time ill pick one of these coolers up.
Pelican > Yeti ... Ice lasts longer, warranty much much better, capacity is greater, and price is much cheaper
+RJ Carter Thats right RJ, most agree that the only disadvantage to the Pelican is the weight. If you are not concerned with weight then absolutely.
+Coolers On Sale I paid $220.00 for my pelican 45 with no wheels........way cheaper than a yeti, way better too!
👍Finally a very helpful video. Straight forward & to the point. Thank you. 💞
Never heard of pelican looking into getting a 30QT will be great for fishing
I love it when a yeti owner gets their feelings hurt. They get all defensive and try to defend a shit product. I wouldn't own a yeti cooler if someone offered to give them to me. I've seen way too many yeti owner bust the bottoms out of their coolers after the rope handle breaks. Lids folded backwards going down the interstate due to latches deteriorating. My pelican has been through hell and back...even had sand in the latches and performed flawlessly. Oh and if something was to break, they will replace it for FREEEE!!!! Oh, I'm sorry yeti owners, your still buying latches...BWAAAAHAAAAHAAAAA
Please find me a picture of a yeti cooler with the bottom busted out from dropping or a lid folded back lol.
Truth! Rope handles, rubber band latches, and a 5 year warranty? On the other hand, I was in a Gander Mountain last week, and Yeti had a quite impressive display of overpriced replacement parts. I haven't bothered to turn over a Yeti, but the Pelican also has sturdy rubber feet on the bottom that keep it from sliding.
+Leland Fox I wouldn't call 10-12 dollars overpriced
Lol
I own several pelican cases and damn do they take a BEATING. Even my little 1010 case model holds up to every day use.
Have you tested the new 45 wheeled vs. the "old" 45 wheeled? wonder if there is just cosmetic changes.
thank y . pelican is a beast of cooler! build better and holds ice longer! cheaper and has wheels to walk . going buy a pelican!
Was wondering, why don't they have an inner soft secondary inner "lid" with slots (so you can put your hand through and get the stuff out) to reduce cold air loss whenever you open the lid. That seems like it would help prevent cold-loss a lot.
At a certain price point the cooler leans to the investment; so from that view what are the warrantees? I understand some can be limited lifetime.
Pelicans is made in america right! I have Yetis works well with my dry ice. Not made in America which is greedy given the price. pelican looks good plus it has wheels
I dont own any Yeti hard coolers, just a few tumblers. I do own a Pelican hard case though for my camera and I have to say that Pelican produces very high quality products that are built to take a beating. I took my camera on an airplane in my checked luggage, it was totally fine. If the quality of the brand isn't enough for you, its way cheaper and made in USA.
Wonder how they compare to the Rtic
I have a request pelican 150 quart versus Artic 145 quart please
Nice review 👍🏽👍🏽
can ya test the otterbox venture coolers?
OtterBox Test vs Pelican...... please🙃
Working on pulling this together.
Coolers On Sale Thank You........ Yeti seems to be everywhere and over priced. Pelican has been known for Scuba dive lights and military grade tough boxes. OtterBox military grade dust/waterproof phone cases (Glad to see they are into coolers now). For me I want a tank tough, made in the USA, and a 5 day with internal temperature still under 40F. The military combat side of me wants it tough and easy to use. The chef side of me wants the 5 days of keeping food out of 40-140F bacteria and spoilage temperature. The American side of me wants it made in the USA. Thanks again for your helpful videos😎
Drains faster ? I want it.
hello i have a question do you also sell and ship the pelican too the netherlands holland
On the pelican elite 45 with wheels, about how much does it weight if you had just ice and cokes?
trying to get a Yeti open after coming down from elevation is a pain
Them pelican cases come with a built in auto expansion pressure release valve. I dont know about the coolers but i wouldn't be surprised if they do.
the Siberian is a nice quality, the pelican also.. yeti is over hyped and over priced. do your research and you can get a cooler just as good or even better than the yeti..
Well if the inside of the yeti is smaller it's not a fair fight maybe a yeti 50 would have been better just saying
Yeti is like Bit Green Egg. Expensive, overhyped and expensive because of exclusive contracts with retailers (REI, Ace, Moosejaw etc)
Do larger coolers hold ice for longer or for less?
Assuming they are full of ice.... normally yes. Brand plays the biggest factor.
if yall watch his yeti45 vs. grizzly 40 it's the same video clip used in this one
+Justin Hunter What do you mean Justin? This is two different coolers
+Coolers On Sale I think he was high when he watched them. Lol
$450 for a cooler?
Is the orca better then yeti?
is lifetime warranty better than 5 year? Orca, Pelican, Canyon are top notch, if you need a Yeti get an RTIC same thing
is yeti the apple of coolers?
Patrick Rayleigh no because Apple is a good product...
ICE TEST, WHICH ONE LASTS LONGER?? DATS WHAT I CARE ABOUT!++
Had a pelican 65 quart and sold it. Bought a grizzly and a yeti and haven't looked back. Great, no questions warranty on the pelican but it doesn't do much good 500 miles from home with a broken latch.
How does a Yeti fare 500 miles from home with a broken rubber band? I suspect the Pelican was just a bit too heavy for you to lift.
+Leland Fox does quite well actually. Outer banks alone must have 12 yeti dealers lol. I have yet to see a pelican latch for sale anywhere lmao. I'm sorry I've hurt your feelings over buying the pelican lmao
I suppose I can understand it when some feels compelled to defend their purchase of an overpriced, inferior status symbol. You probably invested in the Yeti hat and bumper sticker too. Perhaps not seeing any Pelican replacement products on display is a testament to their product and lifetime warranty. Pelicans really aren't that heavy. Maybe you can get your boyfriend to help you lift it.
+kingrider75 you don't see them in stores because they don't break like those piece of shit yeti's do
@@kingrider75 don't have a dog in this fight but dealers choose what to carry based on margins, it has nothing to do with what is or isn't a better product. Yeti does an excellent sales and marketing job, they also are very effective with their minimum advertised price enforcement, and likely give dealers a better profit than Pelican, hence many more dealers carrying Yeti. That being said, the latches on this cooler appear to be the same ones many of my Pelican rolling camera and video gear cases use, and I put those through airport baggage handling which an break just about anything, yet I've never had one fail. I suspect yours was defective and likely would not have broken again if you'd replaced it under warranty.
Pelican in truck bed for 8 years. Cap is still fine. FYI.
I have a pelican 45 cooler in tan and it's just way too heavy. I would trade it for a yeti45 lol
+Lee Ludtke Yes Lee, the Pelican coolers certainly are heavier. Probably why they can hold ice longer though.
Yeti is over price!! Pelican is a better built.
Given Yeti's stance against the NRA i won't every buy anymore of their products. Despite that, hey are under performing and impractically heavy. i own a Yeti 35 quart and don't really even use it. Pointless, overpriced marketing darlings is the spineless Yeti company. They were the first to market high end coolers on a large scale. I do have to give them that.
I am far from a Yeti fanboy, and have several Pelican gun cases, but the NRA thing was just hype; they simply chose to end a corporate purchasing program deal, the NRA decided to try to parlay that into donations by playing the victim at Yeti's expense. With what's been coming out of the NRA lately on the management side, my 2fa defense donations are definitely not going to them. From a cooler perspective, I'm having trouble deciding between this Pelican 45 roller vs the Rovr RollR 60.
Yeti is just a name. Pelican is much better
outdoors men.. whining about a heavy cooler..smh. the world we live in..
Sold I’m buying a Pelican especially since they support the NRA! Screw Yeti
Only suckers buy yeti
Will never understand, for the life of me, why people would pay $400 for a damn cooler. Lmfaoooo
We’ve done the same test multiple times in multiple conditions..... the Yeti wins every time.
Yeti vs Pelican? Or other manufacturers?
Coolers On Sale ProGear Elite 45Q vs Yeti’s Haul and 45. I’ve done these tests repeatedly.... the Pelicans never fare well. They’re a decent cooler for the $$, but they’re just not in the same class as Yeti or Orca.
The iCast test was a disaster.... it made Pelican look stupid and only bolstered Yeti’s iconic status.
USA vs china made
what sounds cooler grab the yeti or grab the pelican lol my point exactly
To all real Americans. BOYCOTT THE 2ND AMENDMENT HATING COMPANY NAMED YETI. There coolers are made like shit and are overpriced.
It sure seems you have something against the Yeti? all your reviews you state incorrect prices for Yeti and keep bashing the model number doesnt mean holding capacity, but fail to mention the cons of the others ? Yeti 45 is $349 with a dry goods basket.....I laugh that you fail to mention the Pelican does not include the basket and charges $60 for a basket that Yeti includes as well the Pelican coolers are same if not more than the Yeti. Have you ever seen the hood latch on a Humvee or a Mack truck?...very similar to the Yeti latch and both vehicles are well known for hell and back performance. My guess is if some beach sand were involved with the Pelican latch....bet it dont work? I cant imagine your review if the Yeti weighed that much empty either. Give credit where credit is due....Yeti makes a great cooler and the rest of the high end wanna bees are wanting the same price or more than the Yeti's.
+J Fike
And it sure seems you have something against Pelican. There is nothing wrong with stating facts and calling out Yeti on their misleading model names. If you want a Yeti, buy an Rtic. The exact same cooler, but half the price (and they actually give you 35 qt in their model 35). If you want all the cool features Pelican has to offer in a cooler with a name known for quality for years such as Pelican, then it's your cooler. (Pelican has been around and making quality cases for many more years than Yeti has existed.)
I could easily go on all day why I prefer the Pelican over the Yeti based performance, features, price etc... Don't get me wrong, I am not downing the quality of Yeti at all. They are built stout, and built to last. I would just rather my money buy quality rather than advertising.
+vette0812 The facts are Pelican is more money and doesnt include the basket, charge $60 for it and the guy purposely on all videos states an inflated prices above MSRP for the Yeti coolers...thats what I would call misleading.
Show me a video with some sand in those Pelican latches and how the lid seal is not part of the lifetime warranty...thats what I call misleading. Sorry not the least bit interested in a Pelican
Surely you're not implying that those two trucks "hell and back performance" is due to their hood latches?? Lol Rubber latches dry rot. And like it or not Yeti being deceptive with their model numbers is an issue to a lot of people.
+J Fike my god man they're just coolers. Why are you getting so worked up because you're cooler doesn't perform as good as you think it should?
+J Fike Okay? I have a Pelican 45 and I am a huge fisher in fresh and salt water and it's great. My best friends have the Yeti and I love it but no one uses that dry basket. It's all in preference and what you use it for.
Works great but holy shit ,that cooler is ugly.
No way would I pay over 50 dollars for plastic and Styrofoam.
you must pay a lot for ice
ice is free
Recon9143 if you have a commercial ice machine, most people dont 😁
Recon9143 Ice is free.... unless you're 200 miles away from home, camping a 3 mile hike from your car and 20 miles from the nearest gas station.
