During our trip to LA, we met up with Grammy nominated saxophonist Dave Koz to tell him about Postmodern Jukebox. He loved the idea and offered to help us do a vintage remake of that song with that famous 80's sax riff. Check out the "Careless Whisper" variations in his solo at 1:42

Like literally, when are you BREATHING? This is amazing
+Hamelyn six That's what you call breathtaking ;)
+PostmodernJukebox 👍👍👍
greatttttt
If you listen very closely you can hear her quickly take breaths in between verses, singers and musicians tend to learn to do this very quickly so as to stay on beat.
Many sax and trumpet players use circular breathing. That's how my little brother do.
0:49 the bass players reaction gets me every time
He was clearly startled, but never stopped playing.
didn't miss a single note though. Bassman is the real MVP here
I think he knew that would happen
OBVIOUSLY XD
😂
10 years and still one of my favorites
That Take Five lick caught me so off-guard holy hell this cover is immaculately good
Also the "message in a bottle" intro piano right after... a few Easter eggs in there!
@@d1p70 jazz musicians will find a way to sneak any Easter Egg in, no ifs or buts
heard that on spotify and came specifically to youtube to see people talking about it, i jumped out of my chair and paused my game lmao
Oh HELL YEAH! That hit me hard.
Да ни фига подобного ковер - это обезьянничество и качества там не будет.. а тем более новых находок для дураков, типа тебя нет.. А тебя уже это радует, да?
The Sax player jumping out of every corner got me every time, especially when he accidentally scared the guy on Bass
And he just keeps going lol
he's a little show thief lol i love it
I love Dave Koz. ;)
It was put on. He knew what the sax guy was doing.
That's strange. You mean they didn't rehearse before the actual recording? But kudos to the bass player anyway. He didn't appear to miss a beat.
2:01 that emotional change the saxman made and put his leg up like a cartoon made me cry. REAL ARTIST.
I got u I love this part 😩
The saxman is Dave Koz .. one of the greatest smooth jazz artists ever :) .. Check out his music, you might like it.
Dave Koz on sax. Saw him in concert and not only is he good on the sax but a real funny and entertaining guy. His musical change at 2:00 in was to one of his songs.
Well Robyn certainly thought it was hot
Yes! Saxman Dave Koz is skilled and funny... kinda like Basketballman Michael Jordan jumps high and dribbles pretty good.
What I love about this version - and it seems nobody else comments on this - are the style quotations. At 2:04 they move into a 12/8 shuffle. From 2:15 to 2:20 they play in 5/4, basically Paul Desmond's "Take Five", and then from 2:27 to 2:34 this is the Police's "Message in a Bottle". And after 7 seconds, straight back into the original. What a genius arrangement!!
Thank you so much for yr comment. I love people like you. Specially linking it back and fort from previous amazing artist of different generations. And putting time to put the time stamps a bit of descriptions.
THANK YOU.
They should pin your amazing comment..
I've been trying hear the time over and over, but couldn't figure out the 5/4, so thanks! Also I thought 2:04 was 6/8, but close enough :D
i literally read this comment as the switch happened and it made it ten times more enjoyable
The reason nobody commented about it is because 99% of people aren't musically trained and they just listen without obsessively breaking down every element. :-D
@@jw-fb1iq "Obsessively" is the wrong word. This is to enjoy even more.
I love this version. I miss Robyn. A lot of great singers have sung with Scott now, but Robyn really nailed the vibe of their music both with her style and voice.
Robyn isn't singing for PMJ anymore?
@@dunzek943 haven't been for some time. She has her own channel.
One of them moved across the country, which made things complicated.
А почему ты оцениваешь Робина животными категориями, которые недоказуемы в обычной реальности людей? Или вы там все животные...
Agreed
0:49 SURPRISE SAXOPHONE! (the bass player's reaction is priceless)
Thank you for pointing that out.. That was priceless
That was the best. Somehow the song is even better with that reaction.
It was pretty great aha. Understandable. They probably mixed down the sax when editing, I'd probably have jumped just as badly as Adam did lol
As the former bass/tuba player...we don't get much fun.
Can we have a moment of silence to appreciate the amazing pianist at the back?
the pianist is Scott Bradlee, the creator of Postmodern Jukebox
+Katie Stock I hope Scot bradlee and Robyn Adele Anderson married ; )
Terrence Bata I shipp it.
Oh, him. What's his name again?
The pianist is the brains behind the operations. Scott Bradlee.
The lead player singing good
The saxophone guy is really very very good
And the movements she does to the music, really a pleasure to watch it! Thank you so much for this song!
look for changes in drummer ;]
@ I know!
They must have swapped outfits 7 times!
I agree! That instrument is an extension of his soul!
Robyn Adele Anderson is magnificent. She has a magnificent range and understanding of styles. A real star.
I love how he sneaks in "Take Five". I hate how he plays it so much better than I do.
sleepy same but I mean he was nominated for a Grammy
Just this whole performance mesmerizes me. The sax player is great, the drummer plays like 4 different styles, all in one song, the piano player is banging that left hand, the bass player is thumping, the singer is fantastic and her eyes contain so much expression. How could this get any better?
derek a Nailed it
derek a - Best comment.
derek a the transition between careless and take 5 is so seamless. And that’s not even just a different style but a whole other time signature as well
Captain kiwi that’s what you get real musicians: quality.
Deadpool cameo?
The drummer doing some outstanding rhythms
All while staring into the camera like a boss
Coming back to this after 8 years, and it still blows me away. Superb.
And now for the first time I notice the interactions between Dave and Robyn. This performance just keeps on giving...
The saxman just having the time of his life right there
He's dave koz
KOZ he can! 😆
He’s my all time fave sax player because he is ALWAYS so entertaining to watch. Look at him playing “The Shadow of Your Smile” with Johnny Mathis singing~…such a wonderful interaction between the two musicians; you see that EVERY time he plays one of his saxes and I’ve never met a player who’s equally good on soprano, alto and tenor. My absolute hero!
With all the great, and all the incredible numbers PMJ has done, if I had to pick a favourite, it would be this. It's Scott's congenial arrangement that keeps changing styles, it's the genius of the original song, it's Robyn's unique voice and her emoting, and it's the pure and simple set up. This song is the Sistine Chapel of whatever it is PMJ does.
Robyn's antics just before and after the 2:00 mark remind me of a scene in a Star Trek episode. Fans will know which one I mean.
This just ridiculous. It should be impossible to create such a flawless piece of music. I must have seen this about a 100 times by now, and still keep going back to it. Goosebumps every time.
It's hard to grasp full-blown autistic meltdow best planet action is to accept it and move on
I realize, watching these videos, that the piano is a lot more of a percussive instrument than I thought.
It looks less like he's pressing individual keys to make notes, and more like his hands just have an idea of how they want to strike the area the keys lay in...and they just happen to hit all the tuned actuators. Like...a high-detail xylophone, just complicated and awesome.
Neat.
this was so accurate and weirdly beautiful
Fun fact the piano is actually in the percussion family!! But I agree fully they do a wonder job showing that side of the instrument. ^.^
The piano is actually a percussion instrument, considering that it uses hammers to strike strings.
although i agree with you, xylophone is also a high-detail instrument (and marimba even more so) and getting good takes a lot of time and practice. but yes, the piano is just a fantastic instrument!
Lunumbrus I agree with you, although I don't think his hands have an area containing multiple keys, I think he's done enough practice to hit the correct keys every time.
Savage version of this song, and great saxes, looking forward to seeing yea guys in Galway Ireland.
+TheShuteye We are looking forward to Galway as well!
+shurednichso I've known about them for about two days too and I wanna get tickets 😹😹
As opposed to Galway Bulgaria?
Ther's a Galway in Jamaica and in the u.s
...savage?
George Michael's original version is beautiful. But I love this vintage version; It gives it a different air, original, more casual but very accomplished. Congratulations to Potmodern; I hope they keep making new versions of good songs.
The drummer changing styles mid song had me in stitches
Imagine stepping into the actual 1930's and playing this and see the faces of the people.
People in the 30s: damn this is a bop
Maybe you aren't ready for this yet but you're grand kids are gonna love it

thx, I got to the bonus level
Thanks!
@ChiefZoomy 9 yeah
Got 95% on it but can’t get higher
Brilliant, the rendition of how they put this one together, the arrangement and music, singing is just brilliant. I have listened to them before numerous times and they are incredible and so talented. Great job.
Love the way Scott’s hands move on the piano. Looks like he’s having so much fun!
I wish the other band member wasn't blocking him.
I am a special education teacher at a middle school. I play your music throughout the day for my students and they get up and dance! They love it as much as I do!
Starts out 4/4
Changes to 3/4
Changes to 5/4 = Take Five by Dave Brubeck
Back to 4/4, but is now the outro of Message In A Bottle by the Police
Back to Careless Whisper
This is the most brilliant thing I've seen in years. Are they touring? If not, WHY NOT????
Postmodern Jukebox tours relentlessly - gotta see the show!
I've been hoping to hear them do a Brubeck-style version of some Led Zep for a while now - that little hint of Take Five was exciting!
I'd say 6/8 instead of 3/4
And it can't be overstated just how good that drummer is. I'm sure it took some work, but that guy is fucking good.
favorite part of the solo when he goes into "Take 5."
Do You know from what song is the part in 3/4, just before "Take. 5"
9 years ago! OMG! Still the best Careless Whisper cover from PMJ.Scott Bradlee the wizard of styles :)
My friends, you are amazing!! What a incredible theme!! Congratulations!! 🙏🥰❤️👊🎤🎵🎶🎻🎹🎸🎼🎷🥁❤
I love the way the bassist (Adam Kubota) reacts to Dave coming into the picture at 0:49.
“I’m never gonna dance again”
*robyn dances along*
@duality I want her to step on me
I also want her to step on me.
Masochists
A decade later and still one of my favorite postmodern remix . Dave coz is a beast too . Amazing compilation
I always love jazz no matter what time it's played
lmao the way the bass player got scared 50 seconds in

And the Oscar goes to...
HAHAHAHAHAHHA
I'm giddy over this saxophone feature. Yes, please.
the line '' i never gonna dance again '' got me ❤️❤️
George would be sooo blown away. Brilliant ❤
Dave Koz is a freaking jazz legend!
Having said that, the Sexy Sax Man wasn't available? This is basically the only song he does!!
Hahahaha Thumbs up for that!
Robyn is simply BEAUTIFUL!!
Underrated part of Robyn's performance is her hip bopping through all the groove changes in the middle. It's not easy to make snapping along in 5/4 look so smooth!
THAT was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'Wow, the lead singer is really pretty'
0:49
'OH GOD THE SAXOPHONIST IS REALLY PRETTY HELP'
Bi energy
A little Dave Brubeck makes everything better.
I know, right? "Take Five" is just an amzing piece of music, and the sax parts are more than brilliant.
and the bit thats after "take 5".. for a bonus point ?!?! I knew the band and it took me a few songs to figure out the song.
Police - Message in a Bottle
Anon Nymous
I was like, "meh, good musicians, nice groovin', but regular cover". When they played Take Five the video got my thumbs up.
Love when Dave become Brubeck for a while...
You are G R E A T !
Thanks for all this REAL music.
I love her voice. It's just sounds so much fuller than singers today.
Probably because they didn't pile a bunch of processing (effects) on her voice in post. It sounds to me like she's singing on a dry mic, well maybe a touch of reverb but that's all. That's a good thing.
I rarely say this - and I mean, RARELY - but that was a great sax solo. Well done! Nice to see actual musicians in a video.
Edit: oh, that was Dave Koz. No wonder it was such a great solo!
Correct. That's Dave Koz.
*🎷 KOZ 🎷*
Yeah for sure, his solo was great. I'm a jazz noob, but even I picked up the Take Five segment he did, super cool.
@@bobn9414 And a couple of bars from Message In A Bottle?
Love all the musical references in this one. I almost lost it when I heard Take five. Love it!
Dopeness
take five! i was thinking whats the name of that song for days lol
same here once i heard take five i flipped out!
Also a lick from the Police's "Message in a Bottle"?
Good catch. I picked up Take Five right away, but missed Message in a Bottle!
Beautfiul song!
Briliant performance!
Magnificent voice!
I love how they really enjoy themselves in this song.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the flawless continuation into the next line of lyrics at 0:31? Between “goodbyes” and “yes”. Breathing is on point.
Wow, the way she looks at the saxophonist makes me melt...
Damn, I just noticed that, that's some tension right there and he acknowledges it in some places. In others she appears to almost directly address him.
I don't know how many times i've came to listen this Robin version. But I always ended up satisfied.
Thanks Robin, you're great
The singing beauty is killing it the whole time.
The band is whooping backside and taking names in style.
The saxophone player is doing the notes perfectly while scaring the pants off everyone with his jumping-out!!
Gotta admit. I was bopping along to this.
They are pretty good. Saw something going around at Christmas and got hooked.
He pops up with a different saxophone every time!
Nice catch
Alto then tenor then alto
Who are these people in a state of flow? Why are they not legends? The seamless transition through 4 styles in 30 seconds, is from another level that escaped from reality.
Scott is wonderful…love his compositions. Can’t get enough of him n his friends entertaining us…would love to see him in person….
shoutout to the legends that got to the bonus round. It was definitely worth it!!!

1:51 how to flirt with a saxophone
Utterly shameless, but that's what a saxophone is for.
She totally checked him out a few times. I need a sax....
And a haircut.
i think playing a sax should already be considered flirting.
Michael Madsen
I love the drummer's smile when he stars playing "Take Five".
I love how the sax solo is basically him trying to impress the girl, and she tries to impress him back with her cute dance moves.

Thank you!!! Been trying to figure out "Take Five" for so long.
Thank god im not the only one who heard Message in a Bottle
Thanks, I was about to ask what is the reference at 2:13 as it was really familiar
I missed 'Message In A Bottle'. Thanks!
Not that many 5/4 pieces I can think of, so Brubeck was obvious to me but I really couldn't put my finger on The Police even though it sounded familiar. Thanks!
