- Been using a Garmin GPS for many many years on my sled....Now with the Garmin Drive App on smartphone connected to my Garmin DriveSmart 66 GPS via BT I have really enjoyed all it can do. It's really that good! These are many of the things that BRP GO App will not do.

Nice setup Dan. Thanks for keeping us updated on all your mods! Cheers..
Any time! thank you! Cheers!
Very cool! Great info.
Hey brother! Thanks! Yes the Garmin GPS hooked to their App really does it all. Im leaning toward a larger unit next season mounted on the GB extension. It's too bad the BRP GO App is not better, cause the 10.25 gauge is really nice but the smartphone integration is really lacking.
I think I’m getting one for next season! Lol
Thanks for the video! 🤙🏻
Go for it!
@rockerdan I'm going to do this on my G4 ski doo - what are you using for a mount to put it on the bar's clamp? Great vid - Thanks!
I modified the stock mount and made a bracket. See this video. ruclips.net/video/tW_O7MIOdJ4/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I have the 396LMT it’s saved my bacon and stopped me getting lost so many times. Plus I don’t have to stop and check the OFSC app 20 times a day hoping my phone isn’t dead lol
It was my 2014 mxz 800 I started running a garmin nuvi on my riser. Back then i used some public track maps I loaded on to a SD card, and for the most part even back then it just plain worked! We have some a long with with much nicer screens, very thin units without any bulk, and TrakMaps(Ontario for my area) for the trails does a really nice job. I would like to see a few changes with them but overall they are darn good. I do still check the GO Snowmobiling(OFSC) App here and there which is nice for seeing the live status of conditions. In the end, the Garmin and OFSC App both seem to work better then the BRP GO App. I'm thinking with a new sled I still would want the new 10.25 gauge however I just hate the idea of having to plug in my phone every time, especially when i take a ton of video and pictures at every stop, just a pain IMO. I do believe the 10.25 gauge will allow for your music to be pulled/played from smartphone with BT only which would be same as how the Garmin works with BT through their Drive App. If this is true, I should be able to control music on smartphone from the 10.25 gauge and/or left hand controls on sled, as long as you either A)Have a BT headset/earbud or B)Use a smartphone with 3.5mm cable going up to wired helmet speakers(this is my setup) which works with my old IP 6s Plus. So in the end the new gauge is still worth it to me just for the music, however I will always want the Garmin for true speed, elevation, texts displayed/played, voicemail played and other cool features, and no need to plug in phone with USB every time. Hoping BRP comes out with a wireless setup that matches how the Garmin Drive App connects, which is likely similar to how "Wireless Apple Carplay" connects in newer cars. Cheers!
Afternoon. I know this is an older video and I believe I looked thru all of the comments. I didn’t see how you mounted this unit to your mount on the riser. Does this have the round mount with the clip? Looking to mount this to the door/ front of the dash caddy for an arctic cat. If this is the round clip, does 1 screw thru the center do the trick? I don’t believe RAM makes a cradle for it. I was toying around with a weatherproof unit, but I won’t use a 1/4 of the features. Thank you for your time.
Yes, I used the included round mount when mounting the DriveSmart 66 to the Mach Z. I have some pictures in an older video here: ruclips.net/video/tW_O7MIOdJ4/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I drilled out the center if round mount, and used a large single bolt. I found the best large bolt to use is one of those toilet tank mount bolts. Most toilets come with 2 large headed Stainless Steel bolts that mount the tank to the bowl, and since I have some of these laying around always, i decided to try it and it works really well. I have seen others use smaller bolts which they drilled a smaller coinciding sized hole in the plastic mount and they seem to work fine. What you need to remember is the DS66 unit is quite a small and light GPS unit, so it does not need any major strength like my oder Garmin 2797 needs. Cheers!
I went back and wstched your old video mods for mach Z, im still running my Z and loving it, did that mount for gps come with that? Or where did you get that mount???
Yes it came with it. I have a video where I show exactly how I modify the mount for the sled install. Cheers!
Hi Dan. Great videos, keep them coming. I also own a 2022 MachZ and installing the Garmin Drivesmart 65 with Alexa GPS this season. Question, how do you access the trail maps you ride on? I'm assuming you have the old TrakMaps or Backroad Maps version? Any help would be appreciated. See you on the trails in Huntsville this season.
Yeah still will be using my 2 year old SD card from TraKmaps. As you may know, they are no longer selling Ontario SD cards anymore since they cant be live updated OFSC has cut them off. I added an iPad mini, just check my newest video, this will get me the updates through GoSnowmobiling App and BRPGo App. Cheers!
What Garmin is that? I use a 60CSx hand held on my sled with snowmobile trail maps from V&V Mapping Maps. I also have a Garmin for Motorycles .. I have a Cardo Blue tooth system in my Motorcycle helmet not so easy to change from Helmet to Helmet..
If I had a GPS where yours is mounted I think it would get destroyed..
I have been running a DriveSmart 66 model for 2 seasons now. I have mounted all my GPS to the riser clamp for many years now. Best location to tap on it and view IMO. If going to a larger unit though, it would likely need to be on GB extension which I may do next season. Not a fan of BT music as I never want to depend on batteries, so Im old school and always use 3.5mm cable/jack. Also with BT the volume is never as high I find. I have hardwired JBL helmet speakers that are very loud when compared to other BT setups Ive tested. And cost wise my music setup is inexpensive. I have always run the Automotive style Garmin GPS for their price point. On older models I would silicone the edges of screen for moisture, however with the way these DriveSmarts are built, the screen is installed much more like a smartphone screen so I have not had to silicone it, and it has been out in some heavy wet snow without issue so far. I do take it off sled inside at night. Cheers!
@@rockerdan I have a Garmin 780 Truckers GPS .. Rugged hardware but useless Trucking directions.. I have a Rand McNally Truckers GPS too Far Superior driving in strictions and Navigation routing.. but Worthless hardware that fails all the time. Previous Rand McNally 720 worked pretty well but worthless speaker two units held up for a few years very slow Processor.. The 710 was junk. I have an 80B Tablet I bought refurbished.. it failed got it replaced never worked very well freezes and crashes..
My Gramin 780 does have Blue Tooth .
I guess it's on my motorcycle that my helmet has hit between the handlebars coming down from a wheelie..
My Top speed on the Lake on my Yamaha Attack is 129 MPH on the speedo but 116 MPH on Gramin GPS// My Skidoo 800 Renegade cuts out for engine overspeed at 108 MPH ..
I will keep my phone changed and use it .. and use my handheld Garmin for now..
I can't read the screen on the hand held.. I keep it in a zipped shut case strapped to my handle bar riser.
It's nice that your Garmin has held up .. Like I said Garmin Driving Instructions are Terrible on their Trucking Units..
Garmin should simply use Rand McNally software and Rand McNally should discontinue their Junky made in China GPS Units. I believe the Garmin's are made in China too ..
Love my Drivesmart. Did you do any Waterproofing on yours?
I have siliconed all my previous Garmins around the bezel edge in past, my old Nuvis and also my 2797. However with how these DriveSmarts are built, they look more like how a SmartPhone is built, and even though the screen is not glass it does look much more like glass and likely is put together with a sealer gasket. So with that said, I opted to just try it without any silicone. For the most part the unit never saw anything but snowdust up until a few rides this season with heavy wet snow, where it got very wet and I did not have any issues whatsoever. I do take it in at night but I'm sure it would be fine left on sled. I do have my sleds always on a tender if there were any low draw to battery, even with unit powered off. One bad thing happened this year was when sled was in for Smart Shock service, the sled was outside for a few hours and there was heavy rain! I had taken off the Garmin, so the USB C power cable that is on sled faces upward, and water laid in that USB C and then I covered sled and we headed to Timmins where temps dropped bigtime and so next morning went to slap on the Garmin and saw ice in USB C power cord. Did my best to get ice out and looked good but when I plugged unit in it worked for first leg of day but then the connection got bad and it kept going dark mode. Even though it was charging! You can see it my videos Timmins to Kapuskasing where this happens. I was able to use my old IP 6s Plus(which is what I use for music only) on my GB extension and pull up Go Snowmobiling OFSC App, which actually worked really awesome to guide me on the remainder of trip, and could still play my music. When i got home a few days later I warmed up the USB C, it all looked OK. But was doing same thing not getting proper connection. So I turned it 180 degrees, since USB C can be plugged in either way(sorta like a lightning can) and once I turned it over and plugged it opposite way, it must have fixed whatever small connector that may have got bent from the ice, and then when I turned it back over to the other way it worked from that point forward for the remaining rides flawless. So my long winded point about this USB C is I started installing a plastic USB-C Cap onto the plug everytime i have sled out in any weather without the GPS connected. This will keep any crud or water/ice out of it. In the end leaving the GPS itself on and plugged in would have likely been better then what had happened with mine. This is the ONLY drawback I see with these Automotive Garmins GPS vs something like a Zumo made for motorcycles. The motorcycle units come with power connectors that are easier to slap on/remove from sled and also have a cap or some type of power protection where ice wont form. It really is a NON issue now that I'm paying more attention to it because my sled never is outside without GPS installed. I never would leave sled out in rain either, this was just because the sled was in for service and not typical, so just keep a USB C cap ready for any of those situations. In the end the cost of the automotive units, their size availability and thin frameless design is why i have always liked the auto units over the Zumo. Cheers!
What model no of Garmin are you using on your handle bar sure looks great with lots features and will Garmin drive work with android phone, Christopher Ottawa
I have all the info in description below the video. The last 2 seasons I have been using a Garmin DriveSmart 66 which is their Automotive style 6" unit. I assume Garmins work with all SmartPhones, but I have only used iPhones myself with it. I'm sure you can just check your Android App store for the Garmin Drive App. I often go onto the Garmin site and at the top choose Automotive, then Cars. Once on Cars page you can select on left side the size of unit you are looking for. Every couple years or see Garmin seems to update their lineup. So I often will check their site every few months. These DriveSmart models which are currently 66,76 and 86 came out around summer of 2021 if I recall correctly. When I saw these nice compact frameless models i decided to upgrade from my 2797 which was my 7" go to model for many seasons, and I still have that in my truck and love it. I did have the 7" mounted on bars for a few seasons too, but it is quite large for that location. The 6" model now is a small unit since its frameless and not bulky at all. Only complaint of it is I wish it went a bit brighter overall. Its fine for the most part and looks really great in evening and night riding but bright sunny days it could use more. Leaning toward the DS 86 model for next season and with that size will mount onto GB extension. Cheers!
@@rockerdan many thanks for the info Christopher ottawa see that you are close to Huntsville on Mary lake. My best friend that zi run with a Sr fellow like me also ru s 2021 Mach Z.
Hey dude. How did you download the snowmobile maps?
Depends where you are riding. Ontario where I ride were not being sold for the last season, as the OFSC did not want to share their maps anymore with TrakMaps. But i did recently see TrakMaps now has the Ontario trail sled maps once again but they are no longer done through OFSC. I haven't tried these new ones yet, but they sound promising. Go to TrakMaps site to see if they offer your riding area. Cheers!
how u plug it in?
Use the Garmin Power cable. Cheers!
Is it waterproof?
Drivesmart series is for cars, only waterPROOF GPS from Garmin would likely be the Zumo motorcycle series.
Hey Dan,
Have the Smartdrive 66 mounted on my bars similar to yours. I keep loosing power to the device so it keeps turning off. What’s your experience been? Would it be due to the cold temperatures?
Hey Jeff...I have never had any issues with power loss, other than once when the USB C power cable got rain in it and iced over when GPS was in the house. Since my USB C powe cable points upward it got water sitting right inside the plug end and then froze. My sled never is outside without the GPS connected except this one time when i left sled at dealer.
What sled do you own? If its a DOO did you connect it directly to hot side of solenoid for full time power? If it's another sled, did you go directly to battery?
Only time the GPS may turn off on it's own is if the sled sits there, not moving at all....i think it takes like 10 minutes but it will turn off itself, likely to save power when not in use. I turn mine off manually(back button) whenever i come home and leave GPS on sled in garage, and I do like to plug in sled to battery tender in case there is a small draw from GPS. Never any issues. If on a saddlebag trip, i would remove GPS at night when sled is outside so there is no worry of draw on battery, but I would suggest to put a cap over the USB C plug so no snow or water can get into the plug..
Otherwise my Garmin Drivesmart 66 has been great. Small enough for handlebar rise mount and close enough to eyes for ease of use. I have a iPad mini on GB extension for this season too! Should be pretty cool setup. Cheers!
