Having come off a few weeks back, the police and the paramedics both said my gear saved me from numerous broken bones. As numerous people have commented, dress for the slide not the ride and I'd rather sweat a bit then have to undergo a skin graft.
"Dress for the slide, not the ride." That said, riding for over a week in 40c+ US heat with a very airy jacket took it's toll. But here in the UK, always the gear. It's good practice. :)
Hahahaha this was me having this exact conversation with my wife earlier after going for a ride. Before getting the bike it was just jump in the car and drive off…now more than the gear, it’s “well I can’t put my phone in that pocket……and we’ll can’t keep the house keys there….” Etc etc etc 😂😂😂 …but I don’t miss the ease of ‘hop in and drive off’….as over time I will get into a routine of what goes where …but more so….the joy of riding surpasses the current hassel of moving things around pockets 😂
Great advice, ATGATT Most of the time i'm always in my phillip island bike gear easy to get on and off But would never catch me in jeans and a tshirt like some
'All the gear, all the time' is essential... well for me it is, as it was a perquisite to being allowed to indulge in riding. Your description of where most accidents occur pretty much is 90% of my riding to and fro work - its very tempting to skip the kit on such a short hop, particularly in the summer... but my only compromise is wearing work boots as changing footwear at work isn't really possible for me. If my journey was longer or faster I'd rethink that too. Hiviz gets worn too if it's particularly bad conditions eg very wet or wet and dark but not regularly. Seeing riders without gloves and in a t shirt through the summer makes be me feel queasy thinking about the added risks they're taking to stay cool. Not checked into your channel for a while - good to see relevant new content going out 👍
Excellent comments.. We only have one body..bones..skin..organs etc We never know if there will be an off. ..an accident..and IF it will be in first few yards or 123 miles into a ride Protect your body.... Stay safe and keep the videos coming
Helmet, gloves & jacket are quite easy to take off when you parked, can even keep it all in box sized around 47 litres (2 integral helmets size). Boots & trousers are a bit hard to swap, so have to keep the balance. It is now getting warmer & warmer, my current protective trousers are feeling hot when walking or stopping, boots are a bit easier to tolerate, but still. Unfortunately, it is hard to find both light & safe gear, but worth trying.
I agree. I think casual looking trousers/jeans that you can keep on during the day are a good compromise, but they're going to be thicker and hotter than normal denim
ive been riding to work without my leathers (its a 5min trip) 30mph max, i wear jeans a strong jacket all the time. If I go on a long trip ill wear full leathers...
I came off my bike in between my mod 1 and mod 2. Rattled me a little. Passed anyway. But the funny thing is I wasn't wearing any armored trousers, however, my phone in my pocket saved my leg from road rash. Gotta love a sturdy leather phone case 😂. But seriously, I'm wearing armoured trousers from now on 🤣
Definitely dress for the slide not the ride and all the gear, all the time. However, buy gear that you will always wear. If light A rated gear is your thing and you love wearing it, that WILL protect you. Just don't try to outrun the rozzers in it or take your zzr 1400 for a "stroll " 😉
I’m the same and I’m 54 lol jeans and short boots plus I bought a leather jacket that let’s in so much air then lighter gloves. Then gore-Tex in the winter with full length boots and gloves. I have also got a all in one waterproof that goes over so I’m loving and dry. All the gear and no idea.🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂🤣
Sound advice in my opinion, as you mention I am always covered head to feet. But on the odd really nice day I will wear my mesh Jacket on a ride I technically ought to have my Textile gear on for the faster roads, but Comfort has to be a consideration. Keep up the good work and Ride Safe!
Great video and great advise. I use an airbag on track but not yet for the road. Can’t wait to get my hands on a full airbag suit that supports your legs as well.
I am an ATGATT rider. I confess I wear fairly light weight (CE approved) gloves in warmer weather. I prefer the feel & control. Mindful of your injury & the risks involved. One area often overlooked is the chest Under my jacket I often wear a watersports impact vest...designed for wakeboarding. It keeps me warmer in cold riding plus may mitigate against blunt trauma. ...I have prior considered proper chest armour. Not looked into airbag kit for a while. Your vid has motivated me to need to do new research. Thanks
I replaced my winter gloves with the same ones that got damaged. It didn't really make sense from a safety point of view, but I couldn't find another pair that were as warm, waterproof and comfortable in the same price range :(
@@ayserides For me with gloves control is important. They have to be tried on. I have tried more expensive gloves that compromise control & crucially indicator switch use.
Always wear good textiles - mostly Klim in summer Oxford Mondial in winter. Also a helite air vest. Got a pair of TCX boots but mostly wear my Dainese Goretex ones. I find it hard to get gloves that fit but find Richa are comfy - worrying that yours let you down when you had your off. I am to helmets what my wife is to shoes. My fave is a Shoei Neotec but I also have an LS2 for sunny days and a Caberg just as a change. I also have some Hood jeans for sunny day rides and a mesh jacket that is very old and been crashed in at least once. Finally I have a blue Triumph leather jacket that never gets worn these days as the colour clashes with my bike and airvest!
I've noticed that high-vis (and loud exhausts for that matter) only work when people (drivers..) are paying attention. I've commuted with both and noticed no difference in behaviour without said stuff. I do think having some kind of extra lighting (DRL's, fogs, running lights) do make your bike stand out within all those car headlights. Atleast, I do notice other bikers better, that run these. Anyway, getting besides the point. Yeah, def. atgat. even when going for a quick run. You might think you're the best biker in the world, but even that won't stop your bones from braking when a car runs into you. I've had a friend fracture his knee this way. "Just a quick run to the store", only putting on his motorcycle jacket. He had to revalidate for over a year and still can't put stress on his knee. It pains me every spring to see bikers with the least possible gear doing very questionable stuff on their motorcycles.
I wear high vis for work and sometimes wear it on the commute as an extra layer of protection. I've had more near misses and people pulling out on me at junctions than when I went full black with just my motorcycle jacket. I suppose I must blend in with all the traffic cones?
@@ayserides it certainly has although it’s best not to think about what I used to wear - innocence and bravado had more impact than safety. Fortunately I’ve grown up a little.
To me it is because anything can happen at anytime. But im having the problem of my d30 armour moving around in my textiles so I would need to get that fixed. Probably a full strap on armour set is the best option for that.
I wear dark jeans that normally have internal pads but instead i use RST external knee armour, my boots are Spada that look like normal footwear but its got all the ankle support. When I take my jacket and armour off Im ready for work. I also try and keep a habit of wearing motorbike jeans so getting on the bike is alot simpler. Its easy to think im only nipping to the shops but not worth the risk tbh. Im not saying ATGAT for life but there is a middle ground of safety and practicality.
I know I’m making poor choices but I have went out in t shirt and jeans during the height of summer but in 90% of rides I’m pretty much ATGAT. I’ll always wear helmet, gloves and boots though even with normal jeans.
Having come off a few weeks back, the police and the paramedics both said my gear saved me from numerous broken bones. As numerous people have commented, dress for the slide not the ride and I'd rather sweat a bit then have to undergo a skin graft.
Yikes, glad your gear helped you and I hope you're OK!

I think I might go for the mondial when my current textiles give out. It looks like really good value
Common sense well said, another cracking video.
Thanks for watching :)
Yep, I'm an ATGATT rider myself. Not sure I'm ready to replace my armour with an airbag jacket completely: electronics are another failure point...
The tethered ones are mechanical :p
I wear gear all the time every time. I have had a couple of accidents and have everything intact . Videos on my channel, if interested. Great video 😄
Ouch. An accident is already a terrible day, but I'd rather be crying because my bike is broken than be crying because my skin is missing 😬

Well said Ayse.
I’ve only been back on a bike for six months after a 40+ year gap. Definitely ATGATT - I use Spada Textiles.
I'm guessing gear has changed a lot since you were first on a bike!

Convenience is key I think!
Only use gear for the parts you want to protect.
That's the rule I follow :p
I try and ride as safe as poss as light as poss!
Think have managed to keep all my camping gear to under ten kg.
Nice!
@@ayserides Only room for one shirt etc and no stove/chair haha.

Honestly if it's 30 degrees and above I find it hard to be geared up, so I usually skip riding on the really hot days
Ok do you know any good bike festival that should not be missed in UK this summer
I don't
I wear as much protection as possible, including the helite airbag, i wouldn't ride without it now.
They seem like such good protection. I'm really convinced by them. Shame the smallest one was still a bit too long for me
I would rather sweat than bleed.
For sure
Skin and tarmac don't mix
They certainly do not!
