That's why he kept turning down his own command. The Captain's Chair was too high for him to swing his leg over.
Then he grew too old to swing his leg over a chair and finally accepted a captain position.
No chair is too high
Oh, he'd find a way

That’s a real man girl
Reminds me of Ace Ventura when he is ‘rewinding’ to summarize a plot :)
I asked Johnathan Frakes if he still does the 'Riker Maneuver', and he responded with "whenever possible." Love him
Such attention to detail!
It's funny, but as chairs have become less likely to injure us over time, it's made this far harder. A symptom of an insufficiently optimistic future for back support, but a wonderful element for a performance to bring to the character
I don’t remember him saying that on Beyond Belief.
@@lewatoaofair2522 You're wrong. It didn't happen. We made it up!
@PunishedKenny Total fabrication!
I like to imagine that when Riker encounters a chair with armrest he just stares at it in confused annoyance
I like to think he just gets Worf to rip them off before he even attempts to sit down.
Doing that *Riker-squint* -_-
Louis the Fourteenth made armless chairs popular so he could spy through peepholes on his nobles screwing.
No he just puts his leg on the arm rest just like he does all the time with data's chair at ops
Awesome 😅😆
“Mind if I join you?”
*immediately dominates chair*
That was too funny, well said xDDDDD

That is why the Klingons respect him. He doesn't just sit he conquers the chair.
That's a man that knows where to place his balls.
Riker slaps chair with dick then sits down
It's utterly ridiculous but it's such a power move.
The fact that he got up like that too is what made me lose it though
When he gets up it’s like they just put the clip in reverse
@@ginkgothestink-o6949 his back was fucked irl lol
I don't think it's that ridiculous, it's actually more efficient. Besides it's better to be too ridiculous than not ridiculous enough.
@@patrickgogan3517 He's said his back wasn't. He did it and nobody said anything, so he kept doing it.

Maybe the reason Riker declined a promotion and a ship of his own for so many years was that Starfleet hadn't designed a ship with a command chair that one could straddle properly.

Presumably, that's when they finally redesigned the command chair so he count mount it.
The wierdest part is that Riker sits down faster than everyone else in the show. He had a back injury and it looks a bit silly, but it's unironically more efficient time-wise.

+Andrew White It's how all manly people do it
+Andrew White He has a bad back which is why he sat down like that.
+Paul Alves It's camera technique. He's keeping his face to camera
+Paul Alves I believe that's a rumor. I think the actual reason was, he wanted to make fun of the tiny chairs and it got a running gag.
+mark thompson that would explain why his upper body was alway tilted...i thought it was part of his cool pimp style..
apparently he did this cause he had a back injury that made it painful to sit in a normal way when they had to do a lot of takes. same reason he would tend to lean on things if other characters were standing. its cool that it became iconic
The leaning thing was also because Frakes was much taller than most of his costars (6'4''/193cm)

To think this was born from just needing a more comfortable way to get seated after a back injury over so many takes. It worked out great for his character personality!
Diyanira TBM-Gaming HOW IS THIS MORE COMFORTABLE I am so confused
You probably need a shorter chair back than usual
Don't ruin the magic!
Is this for reals? I thought it was just cause he was tall (the chairs look pretty minute) and full of swagger (self explanatory)

I know the RL reason for it, but I like to imagine in-universe that’s just a weird quirk Riker has. And more than a few people gave narrowed their eyes at him and said: “Stop...stop doin’ that.” 😂

They tried teaching this maneuver at Starfleet academy but the cadets couldn't wrap their minds around it.
I grew up on this show and I never noticed this, just goes to show how smooth Riker is.
If I remember my lore; Johnathan Frakes sat like this due to an injury; mounting the chair was easier than bending down. Later it just became the character. As iconic as earl grey.
Yup! A back injury from a job as a mover prior to being cast as Riker. Also why he'd lean on things like the console or random boulders and barrels.
That's trivia not lore
@Savannah Layh Frakes is 6'3", tall enough to do this with most chairs without stretching his back.
@SavannahLayh... It shouldn't have to make sense to you. If it helps him to complete a repetitive task with less pain, what sense in even questioning it?
@Savannah Layh From someone who has similar back troubles, I guarantee sitting like this, or in an abnormal way always helps me. Guessing it helped him as well.
So as I asked before, what use in questioning it if it helps? It isn't your concern...
He's just letting the chair know who's boss
You gotta wonder how he gets on the toilet to go number two.

*Every female in Starfleet also has to endure the Riker Teabag Torture Test, many bear the scars of failure*
I love how casual he is about it, like it’s completely normal to sit down like that.
Plus nobody else even seems a bit surprised someone would be doing this
The Riker maneuver was actually down to Jonathan Frakes having a back issue. This also caused him to suffer from prolonged periods of time. Which gave rise to his one sided poses as he displaced weight from one side to another during filming to help with it.
What's great is it doesn't remotely come off as a move to ease pain, but a swift and effortless piece of acrobatic skill enabled by his height, the equivalent of a guy reaching up to tap a light fixture/doorway as he walks by because he can.
@@KairuHakubi it’s amazing how things can become both compensation for pain and injury and graceful and confident like that. It blows my mind how our bodies can adapt. I completely destroyed my knees and ankles pushing too far with an undiagnosed connective tissue issue and i can barely keep my balance and hobble around like an 80 year old trying to walk normally but if I can glide on my toes in socks I can move like water. I have a friend who’s an ambulatory wheelchair user, can’t stand upright and still for more than ten seconds without horrible pain, but still dances. The more intensive the compensation the more focus it takes and it can get less efficient but once you learn to feel what your body can do instead of pushing it to do something it can’t anymore, there’s a joy in that movement that’s one hell of a confidence booster ime
Like fine I can’t do the thing normal so I will fully lean into doing it the weird way until it becomes a signature move

Frakes: *just takes a seat*
Frakes: Ever go mountain biking?
You are incorrect, I'm afraid. The only reason Jonathan did this was because he had a back injury a long time ago that gives him back pain. So he needed a more comfortable way of siting. He explained it in a interview.

+Darca1n There is no "cheap" in the Federation, matter replication means money is no longer needed.
Of course, talking about the set, then you're probably right.
+Venaloid i think you mean he is fraking tall.
To be fair, this is probably the easier option when you're 9 feet tall 😆
9 foot 6 inches, to be exact
It's not that easy, I'm a little shorter than Riker and I've done it and I've kicked tables, moved chairs and all.
It needs practice to be a good Riker
@@MacaSkys Easier on the back tho.
or when all chairs are tall.
Frakes also had a bad back IIRC.
He does it so smoothly it’s so satisfying
I have a sneaking suspicion that this is Jonathan Frakes' mnemonic device for remembering his lines.
Previous back injury. He can't twist/curve his back very easily. :(
Nice theory, though! :D
Apparently not. According to other comments, a podcast confirms he did the whole thing as a joke.
jamham69 source please
I noticed this, along with Picard constantly adjusting the front of his outfit when sitting or the way Riker tended to move through a door sideways. I just assumed it was because the man is HUGE compared to the cast.
He also has a back injury which caused problems for him to sit down normally.
That may explain why he was so stiff.
I love how this is probably just how Jonathan Frakes sat for his convenience, but it became Riker‘s "signature move"
Even watching this, all I can think of is that one outtake where he misses it and flounders over backwards. To his credit, he did indeed sit down.
