Welcome to day in the life of a software engineer work from home, I am a remote software developer for a San Fransisco-based tech startup. My day in the life entails journaling, and reading as my morning ritual. Then I move on to coding and building software the rest of the day. I enjoy doing deep work over prolonged hours of shallow distracted work. In the rest of the vlog I take a walk and show you around downtown Toronto. Software Engineering and working from home has been super rewarding to me as it allows me freedom and flexibility. And I just wanted to let you guys experience a part of my life in this Toronto vlog "a day in the life of a software engineer in Toronto" where I do web development, coding and programming.
After escaping an abusive Indian family where I was constantly beaten, insulted and had all my friendships relationships and goals sabotaged, it’s amazing to see emotionally well adjusted Indian people. This is like a foreign concept to me.

French Canadian here! I'm not working in software engineering but in the administration of pension plans. I find it interesting to see what other people are doing and what I can see so far is the fact that software engineers enjoy an amazing freedom in their work schedule. Plus, they can work from anywhere. You could grab your laptop and work in a coffee during the day with no trouble. I am doing the same, WFH on my laptop and sometimes moving in a coffee to finish the afternoon. But I need to follow a tight schedule because my manager keeps sending me new stuff to do and clients always want to get things done asap. I could start at 10AM if I wanted, but I can't take huge breaks in the afternoon and continue until 7-8pm because throughout the day they are always expecting you to be available to get urgent things done (especially things that have been escalated by the client and CRE). Also the job requires to do outbound calls to clients and this is the most terrible part because clients are always unhappy and sending you negative vibes. lol I enjoy the days where I have no phone call to do and I can focus solely on my regular tasks. Unfortunately I'm not getting paid enough to afford an apartment in downtown Toronto, but it would be one of my dreams!
Hey brother, yes Software Engineering is an amazing field to be in. But it also comes with it's own fare share of challenges. I have been fortunate enough to work with a company that is flexible with my wor schedule and only cares about the work and results. But I would still say that's may be 20% of the companies or even fewer that allow this level of freedom.
Freelance is still an option which gives yo a lot of freedom as long as you choose the right clients to work with who respect you time.
The way things are with remote work opportunities, I feel the freedom is in a lot of skill based work, like copywriting, design, UI/UX, video production and editing.
And learning these skills is not hard either with youtube and online courses. I always recommend to people to learn new skills, specially the ones which if turned into work opportunities online can pay really well along with freedom to work whenever you want from anywhere you want.
So if you feel you are not getting paid enough, definitely level yourself up and look for better opportunities brother. That way you can have the freedom and also get the apartment of your dreams in downtown Toronto. Good luck!

Can I ask a question? What series do you watch regularly and how do you decide to watch a new series? Do you only watch stuff you get through word-of-mouth; or do you just watch whatever catches your eye on Netflix? Top 8 series?
I usually watch what catches my eye. But my wife and I suckers for easy comedy that we can enjoy while eating food a little before bed.
Other than that I’m big on sci-fi and action as well. But yea it needs a good story for me to watch it.
When it comes to Netflix not usually a word of mouth type of guy, as I want to consume less shows on Netflix that I already do haha!

Do you like the Software Engineer career? Pros and Cons?
It's a challenging career, and I have found that coding is easy but problem-solving is hard. If you can learn problem-solving and understand how to solve real-world software related problems with code, it becomes more fun. So I went from not liking Software Engineering as much to a lot mostly because it took me a lot of years to get good, but now that I have gotten better I find it fun. Hope that answers your question.
Pros: Freedom, creativity, good money, interesting people to work with, a lot of flexibility with you can choose to work in whatever industry these days, because every industry uses software in one way or another.
Cons: a challenging career, can get stressful if you don't enjoy the mental strain of solving new problems all the time

Hey ! Hope are you doing well! I have a question. How to start an entry level position as a software engineer? I did masters in computer science, then got post graduated from web design and development . I am in Toronto.
Hey I am well, thank you for asking. Great to know you are from Toronto 😄
Here is what I would do:
1) Build at least 2-3 live projects (web-apps) in the industry you want to work in (real estate, gaming, fintech, etc.) This should be in your portfolio, so if someone asks you, instead of telling them what you built, you can just show them.
2) Create a generic resume highlighting your education (degree), a summary of your experience, the projects your have built, internship experience (if you have any), skills and tech stack you are familiar with (eg: Java, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, ReactJS, NextJS, etc.)
3) All recruiters look at LinkedIn, make sure your profile is on point (bio - highlighting the role you are looking for eg: Fullstack Web Developer, Backend Developer, etc.). Add your education and experience and skills you have (same as in your resume). Get at least 1-2 of your professors to leave you a recommendation on LinkedIn (if you can manage that, helps massively)
4) Do your research on the jobs you would like to get, on LinkedIn, Remote.io, Indeed, etc. Study their job descriptions and look for key skills, tech stack, keywords they use in their job description. Try to include these in your resume (don't lie, but insert keywords that match your experience and skills). Tailor your generic resume to each job you apply for.
5) Do your research on the companies you apply for on LinkedIN. Find who is the HR? CEO? Project Manager or a Software Engineer on the team. Send them a message that your interested in the role and ask genuine questions regarding the role, projects and company culture. This will show your enthusiasm. If you have good conversation with them, request them to refer you internally. Some will some won't, your job is to keep asking. Don't feel bad if they reject to refer you.
6) If you hear back from a company. Research the company, their products, users, tech stack and everything really well to prepare for the first interview. For the technical interview, find and study interview problems around frontend - Javascript, ReactJS, Next, etc.backend - data structures, how would you setup a database, how would you implement a hashmap for quick search, etc. If you will be working with CMS based frameworks like Worddpress, Webflow, Framer, etc. then prepare for those as well.
7) After your interview - Follow up, follow up, follow up (Once a week for 3 weeks at least). Recruiters and companies are always interviewing a lot of people at the same time. They may forget to reply back. It's your job to follow up and remind them why your are the right candidate.
