I get chewed out on Reddit when I suggest (such as your grenades) things that affect reduced AC or dulling/cracking a weapon to reduce the attack bonus. Exhausting fumes, blinding lights, etc.
Bless you, professor DM. You make me feel sane.
Those are the BEST weapons. It’s so obvious a tactic! Also catnip grenades to use against tabaxi.
For 3.5 D&D an alchemist can make fireball grenades starting at 3rd level. They're pretty cheap for low-level one-shot items, especially if they're made for 1-3 dice of damage.
The spell Grease can be made into a grenade easily too.
That's a good reason not to use Reddit as a metric for this stuff. You're not trying to play the same kind of game they are. You're after a game where the players will win if they can be clever and/or lucky, with high stakes. They insist on a low-stakes game where they can't really lose.
The professor "joked" that a DM needing permission from a player to allow their character to die was coming. It's not much of a joke, really-look at what happened to Matt Mercer when a player got themselves killed. Not to put too fine a point on that … a lot of the rage was organized using Reddit and Twitter.
@@knghtbrd The Forgotten Realms setting is absolutely littered with the corpses of characters I've played in the past.
Care Bear games are no fun whatsoever. If you can't die, where is the challenge?
Savage worlds has all this and I love it
You can simply attack someone's weapon away or possibly even break it
Goblins in my campaign are somewhat inspired from the film 'Labyrinth'. In my own lore, there once was an ancient race of people who came under the rule of a wise and beautiful queen. As time passed, however, her power and beauty began to fade and so she made a pact with dark powers to become immortal. Of course, as with all dark bargains, this one was perverse. The energies that rejuvenated the queen were drawn from her subjects, turning them into twisted and murderous little green horrors that humanity later came to know as goblins. The queen, meantime, remained the most beautiful of all creatures to walk the mortal lands, but because of what befell her people she was wracked with guilt and eventually became insane. In the days leading up to her self-imposed magical torpor in the catacombs beneath her castle, she began sending her goblin agents out into the world to abduct children to repopulate her kingdom. And now, more than a thousand years after their queen has disappeared, goblins continue to steal children and spirit them away, having long forgotten the reason why.
That's sick af 👍
I love the idea of a roiling mass of goblins forming bridges and ladders.
A bit like the World War Z zombies; a tsunami of teeth and claws.
Me too. It's pretty bad ass.
My favorite part is how the goblins are voracious human eaters. In my campaign, the party found a missing herald in a goblin cave. His arms and legs had been filleted, and they had tourniquets on them to keep him from bleeding out and dying, preserving the freshness of his flesh.
Gruesome!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 The Professor was Goblin Slayer before Goblin Slayer existed.
@@benvoliothefirst LOVE Goblin Slayer!
I got in trouble with a DM when I was playing a goblin PC because my interpretation of "loot the bodies" included carving up the orks we had just beaten.
Goblins eat everything. Even poisonous mushrooms are edible once.
Wasn't a similar scene of keeping an abductee alive and tourniqueted, while slicing off parts for consumption, in the schlocky 'Tales From The Crypt: Bordello Of Blood' movie too, back in the 90s? I recall seeing a movie with a short scene like that from back then.
I love the idea of each room having all their difficulties the same! All praise the Great Grub!
Thank you!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I commented on the Maze episode but you probably won't see it because it is such an old video. I came up with a great way to do mazes and would love to share my idea with you and the rest of the students at Dungeon Craft University! Is there an easy way I can share it with you?

Hobgoblins aren't only Roided Goblins, they have a very tactical and smart mind that can make even the strongest parties quiver if not taken seriously.
Giving Goblins bombs made from all the different slimes and oozes could be a fun idea. It could certainly make them a terrifying threat.
They weren't before? They're small creatures, so 4 of them can fight from each of the eight squares surrounding your PCs. Give them spears and a PC has to suffer through 32 attacks per round with 24 of them flanking. At least one of the 32 should have a level or three of rogue. Figuring out which one it is would be a nightmare.
And don't forget that they can grapple with a lot of extra hands helping.
And then there is the equipment that will inevitably turn up missing if your PCs somehow win the encounter.
@@almitrahopkins1873 Thanks; I get your point... Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! So much stabbing!
@@euansmith3699 Wait, it gets worse.
One goblin mounted on wolfback reduces the attack from that square to two attacks plus a trip attack. The second the trip attack succeeds, the attack from every adjacent square is at +4 and you waste your next turn standing back up from being prone. That also removes your Dex bonus to AC, so it's even worse.
Nine goblins on wolves is a PC killer. Be very afraid of goblin cavalry. They have a +4 to Ride checks for a reason. That Ride check to let them negate the damage from your hit can make an encounter particularly lethal.
@@euansmith3699 And don't forget the archers. Goblins have a high Dex and your PC stands more than double the height of the goblins surrounding them. Every goblin that can shoot a bow is likely to.
As long as you're standing, you're a target. All it takes is one with 3 level of rogue...
@@euansmith3699 And don't forget the pit traps. A thirty pound goblin may be able to run across the trap, but your PC is a lot heavier. A 10' hole full of water kills a PC wearing heavy armor.
This new version is way more "family/logarithm friendly" than the old one, which I'm afraid is now in private. I preferred "woke" Brunno and the really grimmdark goblins and hobgoblins. I know youtube will step on your head for those kind of things, but it was also a reason for why I really liked your content.
Damn the image quality went to the moon!
Props prof!
Oh My God
The retroactively changing the plot because the players came up with a better 1 is a Real Thing.
And it's fantastic.
My players have been asking that our next game be more dark and gritty. I think I am going to steal some ideas from the Caves of Carnage for it. I'm going to check out MacDeath too!
Thanks. Working on another dark campaign now. 4 consecutive episodes to air in June. Stay tuned!
I played MacDeath and recommend it!
Well done to put the fear back into the nasty little goblins! 😂🤣😂
In at the
What a great DM... passing out those little notebooks :) I do the same... it really helps out the party especially in the midst of all that Chaos!
This version of goblins is very fun! I wholeheartedly agree about sewing seeds and few things give me as much gaming pleasure as a player blurting out “ oh! That’s the (insert thing that was mentioned) “ one to my favorite memories is from my long running 5e campaign that I had titled Arkfall. The players never really asked much about it ... then one day, 9 months into the campaign a player said “OMG that’s what ‘Arkfall’ means!” And she was right.
Skullcrusher: "Hand me the Shusher!"
Whacks a character on the head with the magic wand.
"Shush"
The Lazy DM also has complimentary advice that will really improve your game. But this is much funnier. I love the Death Bringer schtick. Makes me laugh every time.
Good video and great advice, Professor. But kobolds, a campaign I was in and it was the kobolds that were feared. They would strike from ambush, use deadly traps and missile weapons, drop weighted nets, etc. They would usually swarm if you got to close to the lair to protect their families.
Greetings from Puget Sound, Professor. The advice in this video was excellent. Once again, you put the MASTER in dungeon master...
Thanks!
I know that this is completely unrelated to the video topic, but thank you so much Prof. DM for recommending Mork Borg. It was very, very fun to throw knives at the book to choose a backstory and my players are having an awesome time with it. Also, I am fully prepared to burn the book if the 7th psalm is reached.
Cool. Tape it! I don’t know anyone who has actually done it.
Great stuff. My players *will* be meeting a hemogoblin.
This is quite incredible. Hats off to you good sir. I love your ideas. Reminds me of Tucker's Kobolds.
I can only hope more comments flood in on this video like a swarm of goblins on a pack of cats. All hail the almighty Algorithm!
I hope so!
Great video as usual. Turd and corrosive bombs have now officially become a part of my borderlands adventure!
What if the goblins got a hold of a purple worm larvae and raised it as their messiah...(giant worm monster)
Gobnac haderach rides worm to victory w freegobs. Long live the gobs
Out-out are the lights-out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, “Man,”
And its hero, the Conqueror Worm.
This should be included with your campaign videos for the Caves of Carnage
I keep track of a global DC that goes up as the characters succeed and down as they fail.
I use the same style of goblin in my world, with the added idea that they are a species of corrupted halflings. We call them goblings. And our hobgoblings are the same as well, magically enlarged and empowered goblings.
More of a tool kit aproach, very interesting and much more useful but I loved the bit more atmospheric original one
I’m eagerly awaiting a detailed video in the future which delves more fully into the goblins' apocalyptic liberation theology!
Thank you, Professor! Can't wait to watch! Wishing you a great day!
The goblins in the Goblin Slayer anime were definitely in the same vein of these horrifying monsters. I use them similarly in most of my games, but the turd bombs will be a fun new tool!
Oh, if you saw the original version.... which I think these details are still part of the lore if you get the notes on his Patreon... You'll exactly which bits he borrowed from Goblin Slayer.
Awesome update on the video! Thanks for taking the time to do that.
As a transfusion medicine guy, I appreciate that last joke. Well played! I also love the ideas in this video and use them in my game.
Thanks for watching!
I came across you videos at the beginning of the year and I am really enjoying them. I am planning a grimdark fantasy game using Castle and Crusades; and your grimdark game series has been the inspiration for it. Decided to do a human centric campaign as well where the monsters have horrifying backstories and they aren't just running around everywhere. Thanks for all the inspiration and may all of your rolls be 20s.
I love this channel! I've been a subscriber for a little over 2 years now and it has improved my games exponentially! I don't even play d&d, I run call of Cthulhu. The advice is universal and excellent. Thanks Professor!
The notebook idea is genius!!!
Fantastic job as always, Professor. I love your ideas and the grimey, dirty, desperate tone you create.
I love these kind of campaign summary videos!
I've always loved the swarm idea of monsters. I did that recently with blights. I used your idea of 1 side vs the other side instead of individual initiative which streamlined the battle and promoted skill synergy. I internally ruled that the more successful attacks the party got, the less blights would get to attack them back on the following turn. The battle took place on a narrow bridge, which allowed characters to blast them into the abyss.
On another note of fighting dirty, poop coated weapons that cause infections. Nasty microbes in feces for sure...
"Borrowing" that 1 difficulty per room concept. That's great.
Have you ever thought about Dming a one shot online for your patrions
It takes a very very particular sort of mindset
It’s always a great day when PDM puts out a new vid!
Long live Dungeon Craft! ❤️👍🏻
I love the mechanic you made for the goblins and how they swarm and gain reinforcements. I don't know when, but I just might use it in one of my own games.
PDM, can you comment a bit on why the reshoots for Caves of Carnage? I've read some speculation, but would rather have it straight from the hippogriff's beak.
Regarding goblins: mine are matriarchal and their great, swollen mother continually gives birth to goblin whelps. Apart from the brood mother, all other goblins are male and capable of digesting any organic material. Should the mother goblin die, the nest will disperse and most wandering goblins will quickly fall prey to predators, but a small percentage will change sex, beginning new infestations.
love the idea of the green slim grenade
These videos are amazing!!! Fantastic content!!!
Awesome content as usual, your plot threads are well thought out and simple at the same time. Deathbringer...don't quit your day job. Cookie for the metric
This is pure gold.
YOU are pure gold and tell all your friends Professor Dungeonmaster says so!
I’m starting to feel comfortable enough in my DMing to start minimizing my prep. I ran a Bullywug encounter and everything ended up more or less being a DC15, it proved how simple a room dc could be.
I still think you should make the originals available :-(
Me too! More reference is better reference!
I miss the slow burn, intensive immersion from the removed videos!
Agreed, I know two similar videos might seem like just a repeat, but I really liked those
It's what competing for the RUclips algorithm does. It makes everyone a hype beast. ☹
Now imagine a goblin chieftain or sorcerer gaining access to a wish spell and wishing goblins live as long as elves...
Thank you, Professor! Great video as always!
Thank you so much for the video! I got so many cool ideas for my next game!
Hehe, hemogoblin...
I'm running a game involving goblins tomorrow, so I may adopt some of these antics.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Pass it on. This is getting dismal views compared to my typical videos.
Yum yum, I’m goblin’ up this delicious content!
I tried the whole 2hp goblins thing... wizard destroyed an entire tribe with magic missile
Did you forget that goblins can use bows?
The first time that hand-wiggling stuff starts, the wizard should get hit with multiple arrows. And goblins have a higher than average Dexterity, so...
@@almitrahopkins1873 Here's the thing: the goblins had their backs turned because the bard made them hear a noise from the other room
holy crap! i totally jumped when the door crashed down. headphone warning⚠️
Great job Professor! I really like you ideas on Goblin bombs! The turd bomb is about to cannon in my adventures!
Excellent as always!
I will be stealing the religion of the great grub! Fun video.
Awesome video! Thanks PDM
Damn, I love goblins :)
Doesn't everyone? They're my go-to DMing and I usually favor them when playing.
Goblins are never to be underestimated.
1ill never ever underestimate goblins again. Not after stumbling on to a few goblin videos
@@ronniejdio9411 really though! and kobold videos. They can be nasty.
Wish I could play in one of your games. Just brutal DMing❤️❤️❤️❤️
You can soon. Cons WILL return-& so will I!
I would love to hear an “ecology of” series.
Very well done and worthy of inclusion to any campaign.
Cool video! Like this new series idea!
Good stuff
I like the dirty fighting goblins
How did i miss this? Wtf? This was great stuff
Fun video! How would the great goblin defend his territory tactically? Utilizing “The monsters know what they are doing?” Philosophy- or are the goblins sitting around impatiently waiting to get slain by adventurers? ( usually always running late)
Goblins don't have a penalty to intelligence and their alignment is typically Lawful, not just evil.
@Almitra Hopkins never heard of goblins as lawful. Hobgoblins sure.
Look at the goblin skull bomb in pathfinder. Funny mechanic.
Awesome vid sir!
I understand you made these 2 last videos in the series to improve upon older versions, but I would really beg of you to set the old ones as public again Professor DM. They are nostalgic to me and still give insight from a different angle. Please? :D
I dig the gold tie.
Hemo-goblin, that's hilarious!
I cracked on Deathbringer joke :D Top notch humour!
PDM's CoC is the best CoC.
Great miniatures.
Keep the mediocre advice coming PDM! I'll keep tuning in for the Great Jokes!
I need to fit in the Caves of Carnage into my homebrew!
Poo in the eye's. LOL
"Hemogoblin" 😂🤣😂🤣🦍🧠
Goblin slayer: Where's that cave at
great as always :)
Oh my, Deathbringer. That was a Dad-joke. 😓
Nice to see Goblins in a more realistic role as menacing and cruel vermin and not as rainbow hued misunderstood PCs.
HA!
You need to be around people who play goblins as goblins.
"Did someone mention... muthafukin.... gObUrInSzSZ?!?" - Goblin Slayer
I always liked this module.
Feed the rhythm!
great video
Definitely used Johann in my game. They loved/hated him.
This is all great stuff, thank you! Can't wait to throw poop bombs at my PCs!
Am making a setting for my next campaign, in it goblins are fey creatures, (half fey, half orc) and have resistance to any nonmagical, non iron weapons.
Goblins aren't orcs though.
Try adding King Ghob to your unseelie court. Ghoblings are dark fey.
Must. Have. More. CARNAGE!! (Did I make the algorithm happy?)
Loved the Pathfinder look to goblins when I first saw images of them. And your version are definitely sneaky, devious little shitheads with their tactics!
👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎
I'd even go so far as to say that their caves sound like a "wretched hive of scum and villany"! I hope your players were careful!
😂😂😂😂
My players hate and fear goblins more than any other monster. New video, BTW: ruclips.net/video/7LCLFpPa1IM/видео.html
All hail the RUclips algorithm Gods. Great goblins!
I use timers for rumors and such. Those Munchburgers? They're going to die in 1d6 days if the PCs don't do anything about it.
very interesting
