If you can manage, bag those traps ( to trap the smell), and take them to a far away tree, away from any buildings. Then, uncover the bags, so the hornets can smell them. Then, RUN! Put enough of the solution in the bottles to last awhile. I'd put them high enough to not encourage bears to pull them down. That has to be awful to endure.

  • @oldcarpenter2372
    @oldcarpenter2372 2 месяца назад +42

They are not hornets. They are not bees. You are being swarmed by yellow jackets, a ground burrowing wasp. They get more agressive in the fall as their food sources get less and less. Wearing perfume, using scented soap or shampoo, and using scented deoderant attracts them.
When I was a child I got into a nest and got dozens of stings. I'll never forget that!
If I find a nest, I approach it after dark and sprinkle 7 dust insecticide into the hole.
    I hope your traps work!
ps: Set your traps out at night. The yellow jackets go home to their borrow at dusk.

Two years ago, my little plot of woodland was infested with wasps. No nest, just hundreds of wasps. Couldn’t sit outside, couldn’t open the doors to the yard, or they would fly into my room. Caught them with a variation of your bottles, and kept them from coming through the door by burning incense. That worked, but it also brought my house, my hair, my clothes back to the era of the hippies.

A little friendly advice from a 50-year carpenter: Take a barrel punch, and set the framing nails that are holding the door cripple to the adjacent stud. Scribe a 3/8" line on the inside edge, and outside edge of the cripple. Take your circular saw, and rip the outside and inside of the cripple. You can then finish the cut with your sawzall. You won't have regrets down the line, that your door just doesn't fit right. (I know that humidity is rare in your neck of the woods, but it doesn't take much to jamb things up.)
    *Pun Intended!

After I got stung over 30 times while mowing by white faced hornets, my husband poured kerosene at night, (while they were quiet and in the holes for the night), and lit them on fire. When the fire was out and just smoking, we covered the ground with a tarp and smoked them. We did that with every infestation area. It worked amazing.

We used Adolphs meat tenderizer in the E.R. Add a little water, mix, place on center of a bandaid, place over the sting, make a cross with another bandaid. It keeps the.mixture in place. The enzymes disolve the foreign protein from the sting . Stops the pain, itching and swelling. Useful for bee, hornet, wasp and spider.

Oh, I SO feel your pain about the pestilence of pests! Here in the Midwest we have been plagued with Japanese Beetles for years. Even though they do not sting, they DO wreck produce, flowers, trees, basically anything they can eat. They once invaded our majestic Bald Cypress so heavily, that their droppings were falling down onto our outdoor picnic table, and into our food... So we tried something similar to your plan -- beetle bags -- and found that the bags actually attract the critters -- much like your bags attracting even more wasps. The solution seems to be to move bags further away to keep them off property, except that in our case, we are in a subdivision, so moving them further away would not make neighbors very happy...Anyway, here's hoping the concoction does the trick! Love your channel -- keep up the good work.

You generally need about a 1/2 inch gap around the door for ease of installation. You should always start by checking that the opening is square and even. Top, middle, and bottom. You are correct to pull the sponge molding as it is a good place to hide screws for installation. I generally install the hinge side first. Set the door on the foam strip on the concrete. A good idea is to temp screw a brace on the outside of the door so it is set at the correct depth. Install shims next on the hinge top side to lock it into place then the handle side top. Next, set the hinge bottom side shim followed by the handle bottom. At this point the shims should be firm in place but not jammed. Jamming will push the frame out of place causing bowing. If the level and plum at this time check out run in the hinge side screws thru the shim. Nothing less than 4-inch screws will do. Next do the same on the hinge side but pre-drill the hole on the frame. After the 4 points are tied down do the middle hinge then the middle handle sides. Lastly, pull out the middle screws of each of the hinges and replace them with 4-inch screws. Check the level and plumb again. reinstall the molding and install the handles. Ideally, the door when opened should gradually start to close on its own.

For future higher cleaning just grab some tape and strap the vac hose to the the broom handle. This will allow you to lift the vac hose up and decimate the stuff above your heads. Also, please remember to wrap those pipes in foam insulation as they are on an exterior wall and will potentially freeze during cold temps.

I feel your pain with the bee situation. I live in the mountains too and sometimes the bees are so bad we can’t enjoy the yard. A logger in the area told me that when they are out logging and are constantly being attacked they pour a small amount of gas down in their hole in the ground. Best to do it night when they are all in there to keep from getting stung. The fumes kill them. I have not tried it but I know ppl who have. Quickly kills the whole nest.

I agreed to foster a kitten who was abandoned by his mom. What they didn’t tell me was he was COVERED with fleas! My daughter was letting him sleep with her and her whole body was raw from scratching over night. And her bed was infested! Poor baby was miserable and even ran a fever. Needless to say the carpet and furniture was also infested. I have an autoimmune disorder so we couldn’t use commercial flea killer. Someone told me to buy a huge box of Borax and sprinkle it everywhere, carpets, floors, drapes, windows, all furniture and especially base boards. Then leave for 4 days, as the Borax works by dehydrating the fleas and they will want to feed even more. So that’s what we did, a whole week away just to make sure we didn’t become a vampire bug’s snack. It did the trick, and the kitten was given a cone of shame and a dusting of the Borax as well. He found his forever home and I said no more cats or dogs for a LONG time!
Hope that hack worked out for you!!! Bee, wasp and hornet to stings are no joke!!!

Hey yall, you can get a lot of adjustment in the door by adding shims behind the actual hinges. To move the door left & right, choose to add them toward the inside or outside, thus it moves the door hinge pin left or right which gives you more space if the door rubs. Shims can be as thin as 2 - 3 layers of a cereal box. Loosen the hinge, then slide in shims and tighten the hinge, rinse & repeat.
I like the Kwikset smart WiFi deadbolt locks because they have the Smart Key. You can have two different lock with different keys, then change the lock to make both use the same key. These locks have 38 separate user codes. I use lever handles with no lock so you never need a key to get in, but do have a key if the batteries die.

If you have to do that hornet thing next year, I suggest mixing up the concoction in a safe environment, then adding it to the containers at the location they are being installed. This might help with the wasp stings, it does for me in Australia. I also used it to relieve the pain when I had Shingles. It didn't tickle, but the relief was worth it.
I pick an Aloe Vera frond/leaf, cut the side spikes off, split it down the centre and rub the flesh on the sting for a few minutes.
Works a treat. I also use it on my pets too. If it dries up,, just use the back of a knife over the flesh to revive it. I also wrap it in cling film and keep it in the fridge, especially if the pets need to have it reapplied over the day/s.
Just a thought, works for me and I've been using it since the 90's. 😊

We too have had issues with yellow jackets. My solution was to move my shop vac out to the compost pile where I pile my apple cores left over after make apple sauce and dehydrating apples. The yellow jackets are attracted to and are really intent on the apples, so much so that I have not been stung. I place the pickup tube on top of the pile, turn the vacuum on and move the tube around sucking the yellow jackets up. I do this multiple times a day. It is quite satisfying to see them disappear up the tube. Over the six-week apple season I estimate the I suck up about 100 per time. There are fewer as time goes on. Good luck!
I use a piece of 1/2 inch hardware cloth over the apples to slow the yellow jackets down and keep from plugging the vacuum cleaner up with apple cores.

Peppermint essential oil and a sprayer mixed with water or rubbing alcohol. Spray the areas around your house. It will deter the hornets and wasps from the area. Also you can spray your windows frames and eaves, doors etc.

Hopefully, the wasp traps work for you guys! We did a similar thing on a smaller scale for ants, and it worked like a charm! 😊 🐝

New doors are great!! It's interesting that Jeremy is so afraid of spiders...Sorry about the ground hornets...Hope the traps work and if you ever have to do this again...maybe set them well away from the house?? Good luck!!

Any type of bait for hornets should be put FAR away from your living spaces. Middle of fields, wood line.....very low traffic areas

The weed called plantain (flat low leaves with length-wise veins and green stalks up from the center that never flower) cooked in coconut oil (and a bit of bees wax, if you have it - I don't) makes a great salve for bites and stings or any other skin booboo. I learned this one from a Native Woman and have been using it for a couple of years. Plantains grow just about everywhere. The bees wax would probably help keep it more solid in the summer since coconut oil melts at such a low temperature. Getting rid of the wasps is great but this salve even dries up pimples! It will dry out your skin in addition to the bite so be mindful of that too.

Wow, I bought the paper look alike nests and they stopped building their nests on my property now for wasps, so far it has worked.

Installing the doors was the next stage, A shame about the one door being a tight fit. Thank goodness we don't see hornet like that, I would run a mile.
You all stay safe, love from Mike. ❤

Watching you two work together is such a pleasure! You have spent years under each others toes. My husband and I are pulling up a slat feature wall around our fireplace , we only managed to place the wooden border around where we will place the slats- it took 3 hours and we had about 3 fights lol

I made some lemongrass soap and lotion two years ago...got 15 stings the summer I used it. Lemongrass is used as an attractant in bee hives. I had no idea. Every time I went out the door or to the garden they swarmed me. Saw a guy on youtube that was interested in everything honey bees and sold products. Curiously I went to his sight and read about his products. I couldn't use my beef tallow lotion either...the cats wouldn't stop licking me. Homesteading life is never dull.

I have door stops that fit into the hinges and I love them. No dust bunnies or mop grabbing door stops near the floor. The hinge stops are adjustable so my doors don't bang into walls, cabinets, etc. All of my doors have them.

Every year we get something new that is the prevalent flying insect. 2 years ago were the stinkbugs, last year the moths and this year those little wasps/hornets. I’ve been bitten more times than I can remember and my poor puppers get hit all of the time too! I’m sick of them… did you guys come over to the Plains, MT rodeo last week??

For the first time in 6 yrs in N. Idaho, we have had no yellowjackets. We also have never had ground hornets. Husband finally found the reason, a huge active bald faced hornet nest hanging outside his shop (can you tell we don't use it much?). I'm going to wait until the area freezes, then go, take the nest down and put it on the burn pile. Next year, the boric acid traps will go up early. Bees and hornets don't tend to attack me so I'm the designated killer, lol.

Hello my loving Idaho family!! No brunch for me today. I’m dealing with pneumonia again and all the meds have taken my appetite 🥺. We’ve made it through another week thankfully and it seems we are both having problems with bees and hornets 🐝!!! Gosh I thought it was bad here in Ky until I saw your situation 😮!! OH MY GOSH!!! I’m hoping your boric acid concoction works and u can get outdoors again. I pray you’re all well… I carry each of you in my heart and always in my prayers🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻… until next week
