      I very seldom see a boiler serviced well. Some guys are installers only and have no idea of what a service is. I install service and repair so I consider all the factors from the start. I would go to a 1 year old boiler that installer would not service and find the filter blocked by pipework from install as pipes overlap it or its so concealed you can never access it, plain stupid...

    Totally agree with everything you have said.
    The trouble is customers and homeowners have absolutely 0 knowledge on gas boilers and as a result will weigh out the 1 hours labour when the engineer is out the door in 20 minutes and he/she says it was in tip top condition so didn't have no trouble servicing.
    If you have a gas boiler at home read up on them and educate yourselves on the basics to know a genuine service cannot physically be done in 15 minutes.

    • @gruhwch4876
      @gruhwch4876 3 года назад +2

      The ribs are caused by localised overheating such as low flow rate or no pump overrun.
      Last time I was on a course, Worcester advocates against stripping the heat exchanger down annually unless the fan pressure readings indicate this is necessary- or there are signs of distress around the various seals.
      Perhaps this has changed - but I haven’t seen anything to say so. On my last domestic renewal there was the usual know all type and he boasted that he stripped every unit annually. The Worcester trainer said ‘why?’.
      The boiler wasn’t designed to be stripped down frequently, the manual says it all. For this reason, we strip them out when the conditions dictate as per manufacturer instructions.

    How much does one charge for a service like this with parts?

  • @derekclark7545
    @derekclark7545 3 года назад +1

    There's no requirement to strip the boiler down if the analyser readings are correct, full burn and low burn rate plus the fan pressure test that Worcester requires is it, after you do a flue integrity test if needed. in later manuals should be a flow diagram that shows, as long as the appliance gives the correct results with adjustment if needed, then no further work is needed. If the manufacture specifies that gaskets or other items must be replaced at yearly intervals then those must be done and that's when you clean the appliance.
    The point of this was to stop engineers from opening up boilers when there is no need, as in the past appliances have not been put back together correctly and fatal accidents have occurred, that was the major factor and why we started using flue gas analysers, now as the industry realised, unless you have one you can't service these condensing boilers.
    Perhaps you where not around when Corgi reps had large meetings with engineers about getting an analyser as change was about to happened just before The Gas Safe Register took over.

    • @ParkesPlumbing
      @ParkesPlumbing  3 года назад

      The analyser readings and pressure test would have passed here. But as you could see the seal was compromised and poc was entering the boiler. You can’t rely on analyser alone.

    • @derekclark7545
      @derekclark7545 3 года назад

      @@ParkesPlumbing If POC in boiler then they would show up as a high CO ppm so readings would show it and yes the reading of an analysers data needs careful interpretation, a good engineer with suspicions raised from readings will know to look for internal leaks, they could not have been correct or the same as a sound appliance that has a good gasket in my experience. Access through the top hatch with an analyser would also show if its leaking so stripping it down unless it leaks, is not required.

    The problem is people (Gas Safe Engineers) making it up as they go along, doing the minimum for the maximum money. British Gas basically conned people for donkeys years taking customers money and essentially doing FA of benefit for the boiler or the customer. I am not talking about these landlord type checks as they are a response to legislation and the quality of the check is a race to the bottom on the price, exactly the same situation as the domestic electrical side with EICRs and both of these checks result in ‘drive by’ inspections.
    The boiler manufacturers have recommended servicing routines and I believe this is what should be quoted for with domestic customers. Further, most people have a boiler for a purpose and that is to heat water and run their central heating system - a service should (IMHO) include a functional test of DHW and CH performance and importantly testing the primary circuit water chemistry and adding inhibitor (if required) as well as cleaning any magnetic filters. If a primary circuit is found dirty then a strong recommend and perhaps a quote for system flushing to the customer.
    BTW: I am not familiar with that boiler but judging purely on access from the video, I am not at all sure effective external cleaning of the HEX can be carried out in situ, would it not be better to remove the HEX? Not a criticism just genuinely interested.

    In my opinion, it’s lack of training the reason people don’t service properly. There should be a course you can take to go through all the different boilers, new and old, showing what’s needed. If the person who you learnt your trade off didn’t know how to do it properly then your not going to know either. The NVQ heating engineers do at college these days is terrible, one day a week, servicing skimmed over and then 4 more days ‘on the tools’ - make it a separate exam/skill and then you will get a better quality of servicing.

      I find they go flat compared to a newer one and I always replace them! Corrugated gas tubes split on those and obviously those red gaskets require replacing every 5 years!
      The servicing standards need to be way better! Engineers charge a lot, but do very little like replacing Graphite seals and stripping down Logics!
