I've improved my insulin and metabolic health by implementing the Carnivore diet.
Nearly three months into the carnivore diet with daily intermittent fasting, and the results are life-changing! Here are my numbers:
    * Weight: Down 30 pounds
    * Blood Pressure: Improved from 139/90 to 123/73
    * Glucose Levels: Dropped from 123 mg/dL to 102 mg/dL
    * Ketones: Now at 3.0 mmol/L
    * GKI (Glucose Ketone Index): 1.8
This combination has truly transformed my health and my life!

Bacteria in the gut can feed on sugars in the intestinal lining. A high sugar diet can cause some bacteria to multiply, which can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome.
Bacteria in plaque use sugar as energy and produce acid as a waste product. This acid dissolves the enamel of teeth, causing cavities.
Bacteria need energy to survive, and sugars are an efficient way for them to get it. For example, the bacteria that causes pneumonia, Streptococcus pneumoniae, uses the sugar raffinose.
Most westerners worry about the damage sugar, in all its many forms, does to your teeth and oral biome and ignore the havoc it causes to your gut biome. Out of sight out of mind.

There's more to it than "carbs bad". The type of carbs & what comes alongside them make more of a difference than anything else. I my experience it's the grains & processed, concentrated carbs that cause the problem. The more processed the worse they are. I've found whole potatoes (including skin) are actually a solid calorie management food over the years, they're incredibly filling for the calorie content, presuming you don't smother them in butter like some. I've also found they don't really spike my blood sugar when eaten as a whole food. I feel the sugar high & brain fog when I eat sugary foods or mass market bread. I feel nothing but satisfied when I eat a few roasted red potatoes.
I like to microplane about 1oz of Parmigiano Reggiano on top, a bit of thyme & garlic powder, & fresh black pepper. Quite tasty & a full meal is around 500-600 calories. Typically eat this around 5-6pm & feel no hunger the rest of the day.
I've cut 30-40 lbs three different times in my life using roasted potatoes, cabbage + ham soup, shiratake noodles with a homemade beef & riced cauliflower meat sauce, & broccoli/carrot/snowpea chicken stirfry as my staples. Drop water weight in the first week, then a steady 1-2lb a week until I'm within 10lb of my goal weight of 180lb, then it's more like 1lb a week. I've done this roughly every 3 years after putting on weight from a few too many pizzas & ice creams adding up & it works great every time. Once I get in the rhythm & I don't even have any cravings.
Sugar & flour definitely put on weight for me, but potatoes, sprouted quinoa, steel cut oats, carrots, berries, granny smith apples. Macrowise, these are mostly carbs & I lose weight while including them as a major part of my diet.
Fiber, water, degree of processing, mineral & polyphenol content seem to make more of a difference than carbs or not.
Cutting carbs definitely helps reduce insulin & water bloat, but again it seems to depend a lot more on the quality of the high carb food than whether or not it's a carb.
I'm 100% certain I could lose fat without fasting, staying pretty satisfied, doing a 50/50 potatoes & meat diet. I bet it could be done on minimally processed ancient grains + a meat as well without too much trouble.

**Key Insights from "Dr. Tim Noakes: The FIRST Problem is Carbohydrates, Followed Closely by Polyunsaturated Fats" - Thomas DeLauer**
    ## Introduction
The conversation between Thomas DeLauer and Dr. Tim Noakes delves into the impact of different dietary fats and carbohydrates on metabolic health. They explore how polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), monounsaturated fats, and carbohydrate consumption affect glucose control, insulin sensitivity, and overall health. The dialogue emphasizes the role of dietary choices in addressing metabolic dysfunction and offers practical takeaways for individuals seeking to improve their health through diet.
    ---
    ## The Role of Fats in Metabolic Health
Dr. Noakes emphasizes that dietary changes over the past decades, particularly in Western countries, have included a significant increase in polyunsaturated fats and a decrease in natural animal fats. He argues that this shift is as important as the rise in carbohydrate consumption when analyzing the causes of metabolic disorders. Despite this, research on the impact of PUFAs on insulin resistance is limited.
Thomas DeLauer notes his personal experience with various fats:
    - He finds that monounsaturated fats, such as those from olive oil and macadamia nut oil, help improve his glucose control.
    - In contrast, high consumption of omega-6 fats from sources like almonds and other nuts negatively impacts his ability to manage carbohydrates.
Dr. Noakes highlights the importance of personal experimentation in understanding how different fats affect glucose control. He considers Thomas DeLauer's experiences valuable case studies that can guide further research into the effects of dietary fats on metabolic health.
    ### Polyunsaturated vs. Monounsaturated Fats
The conversation points out several distinctions:
    - **Polyunsaturated Fats (PUFAs)**: Found in many processed foods and vegetable oils, they have increased significantly in modern diets. Excessive intake of omega-6 fats is linked to inflammation and impaired glucose metabolism.
    - **Monounsaturated Fats**: Found in foods like olive oil, macadamia nuts, and avocados, these fats are more stable and seem to support better glucose control and cognitive function.
DeLauer notes that a Mediterranean-style low-carb diet, rich in monounsaturated fats, has helped him manage his glucose levels and maintain cognitive performance. He contrasts this with his experiences of eating more saturated fats or omega-6-heavy foods, which negatively impacted his metabolic health.
    ---
    ## Coconut Oil and MCT Oil
DeLauer shares his experience with coconut oil and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil:
    - Coconut oil provided him with energy and improved athletic performance but negatively affected his glucose levels.
    - He responds particularly well to MCT oil (specifically C8 and C10 fatty acids), which he describes as providing a quick, significant energy boost without digestive discomfort. He used MCT oil during long runs for sustained energy.
Dr. Noakes finds this information intriguing and plans to explore the impact of coconut oil on his own glucose control.
    ---
    ## Practical Takeaways for Improving Metabolic Health
Dr. Noakes and DeLauer discuss actionable steps for people looking to improve their metabolic health:
    ### 1. Address Carbohydrate Addiction
The first and most critical step is to reduce carbohydrate intake. Dr. Noakes emphasizes that many people struggle with sugar addiction, which leads to metabolic dysfunction. Eliminating refined carbohydrates and processed foods is essential to breaking this cycle.
DeLauer shares his past struggle with sugar addiction, consuming up to 450 grams of carbs daily, including multiple energy drinks. He notes that reducing his carbohydrate intake was transformative for his health and well-being.
    ### 2. Focus on Real, Unprocessed Foods
Both experts agree that the foundation of a healthy diet is real, whole foods. Ultra-processed foods, regardless of how much someone exercises, will impair health in the long run.
    Dr. Noakes advises:
    - Avoid ultra-processed foods.
    - Choose whole, unprocessed foods, whether following a Mediterranean diet or a more animal-based diet.
    ### 3. Prioritize Healthy Fats
For individuals aiming to improve glucose control and metabolic health, prioritizing healthy fats is key:
    - **Monounsaturated Fats**: Incorporate olive oil, avocado, and macadamia nuts into your diet.
    - **Omega-3 Fatty Acids**: Aim to include more omega-3s from fish or supplements, though sourcing high-quality, non-oxidized omega-3 supplements can be challenging.
    ### 4. Tailor Your Diet to Your Individual Response
Dr. Noakes highlights the importance of personal experimentation. Individuals should pay attention to how their bodies respond to different fats and adjust their diets accordingly. For some, coconut oil may improve energy and performance, while others may find better results with monounsaturated fats.
    ---
    ## The Link Between Diet and Long-Term Health
Dr. Noakes stresses that focusing solely on athletic performance is not the right approach. Instead, the primary goal should be long-term health and longevity. Eating a diet that supports metabolic health will naturally enhance athletic performance over time.
DeLauer adds that his focus is on achieving better glucose control and cognitive function while maintaining physical performance. He finds that a Mediterranean-style low-carb diet with added healthy fats provides the best balance for him.
    ---
    ## Conclusion
The discussion between Thomas DeLauer and Dr. Tim Noakes sheds light on the significant impact of both carbohydrates and polyunsaturated fats on metabolic health. While reducing carbohydrates is essential for managing metabolic dysfunction, the type of fats consumed also plays a crucial role. Prioritizing monounsaturated fats and minimizing omega-6-rich polyunsaturated fats can improve glucose control, cognitive function, and overall health.
Practical steps for improving metabolic health include addressing carbohydrate addiction, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, prioritizing healthy fats, and tailoring dietary choices to individual responses. Ultimately, the key to long-term health lies in adopting a sustainable, nutrient-dense diet that supports both metabolic function and overall well-being.
