and 6,000$ for roughy installing new parts with a flat head screw driver ?! Yeah ok bud your maring and rushing if you don’t have the time don’t make a video then ... thanks
I watched the rebuild from start to finish and I was impressed. I have rebuilt many transmissions and you impressed me at every step. I am 84 years old and you are all business. Thank you.
I can’t believe the number of parts that go into a transmission, and how complicated it is, you would think technology would reduce car parts and making cars less complicated. These guys deserve the respect & appreciation equal to doctors , engineers, etc , mechanics are way under appreciated
I have to tell you Truckmaster I have watched this video about a dozen times and this gentleman who does this rebuild is like an artist of the highest caliber. I am not joking when I say I would drive in my 05 GMC truck (Duramax of course) from Georgia to Wisconsin to drink some beer and maybe buy him a steak dinner. I love to watch someone do something with the kind of expertise and precision Mark does. He is in the “masters class” of his craft. Perhaps one day I will meet him. Thank you for posting this video! Semper Fi soldier!
This shop is so confident in their work they show everyone how to do it, but because they do it so professional and familiar they know you will still prefer them to do it. So they know they will not lose business, it's still best to let them do it. Great job and video
I have seen many tutorials and this guy just plain knows his shit. Usually the guy presenting this much material bores the viewer to sleep. Not this guy. Very knowledgeable, very sharp to all of the things that can go wrong and will if you dont watch this video. Or if you have not all ready made all of the mistakes and learned from them. Most of the people who make the small mistakes that lead to failure seldom understand what they did wrong to cause their failure. This makes it a lot more difficult to learn from your mistakes when you dont know what they were. This tutorial has to be one of the best at calling out all of the common mistakes the first timer is bound to make. Very well done. I really hope to see more of these tutorial videos for other types of transmissions. The presenter was able to make his points in a way that made the viewer pay attention. This was an absolute professional at work and it showed.. I wasnt bored one second. You didnt waste time showing stuff you didnt need to and you made all of your points very clear and easy to understand.
Some people and many dogs act like they know how things work and what to do but, don't. It's just fake bravado. This guy, know this trans build like I know how to breathe. Effortlessly, EXPERT!. Clearly. I knew Kodiak from TruckMaster but I just got my first DuraMax. If I ever need the trans rebuilt, I will deliver it to Kodiak; no doubt. Incredible skill. I'm barrel qualified to watch the video but, Christ; imagine making, talking, clearly, illustrating and near faultless in near continuous flow. Incredible
I know NOTHING about automatic transmissions but I was impressed and captivated by this video. Firstly, the engineering that has gone into the development of this unit is incredible! Secondly, our teacher exudes expertise with the speed of his work and his rapid and clear non-stop narration. Truly amazing!
@truckmaster07...... Of course! I have really enjoyed watching Josh with all of his projects. Very helpful, he’s a humble guy who genuinely wants to help others. We need more guys like him in this community.
Also, exactly what he said about " Making your own special tools to fit a particular application" This statement alone is golden truth. Total. Excellent. Quality. Jim
In my younger days I rebuild a variety of automotive automatics and a lot of 543 and 545 Allison's. The quality of this Kodiak rebuild is outstanding! The entire video was pure entertainment. Thank you for posting!
Man what an outstanding video! I drive a 700hp 05 Cummins and this had me hooked from start to finish. I tell you the Duramax community seems to be far more open to sharing insider secrets, you all are like a family. Love the channel and content keep it up, I see a Duramax sitting besides my Cummins soon lol.
The key takeaway I took from this video was this is why they're so expensive to rebuild, and this is exactly why I will never do one of them. Mark is clearly a wizard at doing these things!!
I love my 2015 Duramax 3500HD I just went on a camping trip pulling a 32foot travel trailer my Allison shifted like a dream and never got hotter than 196°. They really are bad ass transmissions and engines.
I watched the whole video! I'm about ready to buy a Duramax and I didn't know a single thing about an Allison transmission. Mark is a TRANSMISSION PIMP! Nice job running the camera and getting good angles so we could see what Mark was doing!
“Professor” Mark! Thanks for the in-depth schooling! I would pay the freight to Wisconsin for a rebuild after watching this! That is 30+ years of experience in street and truck pulling builds right there! Thank you Josh as well! BTW, loved the cameo of Mrs. Kodiak with the 10mm spoof and Kile crashing the party at the end! Broken record here but your killing it Bro!!
This is I deed the most in depth video of rebuilding a allison that I've see, I watched this whole video as i plan to rebuild my allison 5 speed in the 03 lb7, I will for sure reference to the video plenty of times to do this, I should be able to after all I am a diesel mechanic🙄
I have an 03 with an Allison as well and there's no way I could rebuild it. I worked at a diesel shop but I was a welder/fabricator and autobody specialist and painter. I did do some basic diesel repair work as well but nothing to serious, I did know enough to do all the repair work on my own vehicles. Word to the wise even though your a diesel mechanic transmissions are a totally different game, there's a reason they have shops dedicated to fixing only transmissions, no offense intended. Me and my buddy both who know quite a bit about mechanical work tried to rebuild a 3 speed Turbo 350 transmission and it took us 6 tries to get everything right before we were successful and even after that when we put the assembly back into the bellhousing 2 of the 6 bolts in the bellhousing stripped even though we torqued them to spec so the transmission leaked fluid constantly. If I were you I'd let a professional rebuild your transmission or just buy a new one, thats what I plan to do since my truck has a lot of performance parts and is running 400+hp and I need a transmission that can handle that kind of power!
i watched the whole thing and all i can say is i sure am glad my dad was a mechanic for gm for close to 15 years before moving to greener pastures. because there is alot of information to remember when rebuilding transmissions he helped me replace the tail housing on my lb7 without pulling the whole thing out when i let a u joint go to far.
There are literally millions of how to videos out there. Almost anything I need help with to understand how something was designed, function and/or repair. Most of them are done by amateurs that bore me to death and leave me with a headache. On a scale of one to ten this instructional video scores a ten. It is fast paced and professionally done. Excellent job fellas.
This guy is amazing. I’ve seen several builds on the Allison but no one makes it look so easy. You almost forget that the automatic transmission is one of the most complex devices ever invented. One misplaced part will render the entire unit to nothing more than a worthless brick of metal. However, I was disappointed when the milk crate was sent packing. When my 01’hits 300k and the engine comes out for a rebuild, the transmission is getting shipped to this shop. Great video on a true master of his craft!
I have to say... This man knows his stuff. I'm sure we can all appreciate the knowledge, and experience. Bolts are flying, pieces are coming off, not a care in the world. I'd be taking about 1,000 pictures along the way. Thank for the awesome video :-)
ive built a shit load of these and i can tell you he does everything i do i was like i was waching myself wok. i take pride in doing the best, i can say i would let him build a unit for me. you all kno how that is thats why we fix our own stuff. good job.
I have a brother in law who is at this level of skill and has been building automatics since his teens, although he may not specialize as much in the Allisons. He has built a bunch of them and really likes them. He also builds many antique units from all over the Eastern US. This builder reminds me so much of him. And their shop is always jam packed with waiting jobs.
This person is totally beyond Qualified to do this. Awesome, I couldn't stop watching. I'll probably never do this type of rebuild, but as a mechanic it's great to watch a real Pro doing some serious work like he was sleeping. The upgrades are a must if you're gonna haul anything. Superb.
Who knew how to design all these parts. There is gotta be 500 plus drawings to make all the trans parts. And builder/narrator is dong all the work from memory which is equally impressive.
As an engineer and amateur mechanic, I agree that both the design of the thing and the ability to tear it down and rebuild are, at first glance, mind blowing and humbling. However, at least on the design side, keep in mind a couple things. One, no one person designs something with this level of detail. Obviously it is a team of people, most of whom have a very narrow scope- all they worry about is a specific component in a specific section of the transmission, and don't need to know or worry about much that goes on outside of that. Of course I'm sure there are technical experts within Allison that have a remarkable amount of knowledge of how the whole thing works, even they likely can't design things at the component level to create a working modern transmission from scratch. Second, keep in mind that what we are seeing is the result of 60 years of design evolution and iteration. It's not like someone, or even a large team of people, sat down one day with a blank sheet of paper and designed this from first principles. Rather, they were starting with a huge amount of proven knowledge and design history that they could refine and build upon for a specific application. That makes the design side a little easier to swallow. This guy tearing this thing down and reassembling from memory, though- that's just witchcraft.
Ya that guy can work on my Duramax any day ... you can just tell how much experience he has and not just experience but highly skilled Thanks for the vid
I just sat here and watched the whole video, and I don't even own an Allison transmission. Fantastic content in this one, and as for Mark, he is a master at his craft. It is great to see that there are still some people out there that take pride in the things they do.
It's about understanding what it's designed to do, what we want it to do, what it used to do, what it didn't ever do, then. how to make it do. Then, finally, ultimately, how to eliminate the weak link; clear that ID-10-T error code behind the tiller assembly. Great job, Grasshopper, bullet proof. What we've done here; pushed that driveline failure to a less expensive more easily accessible area; slip yoke, u-joint, ring and pinion, axle spline... ;)
What a good job on this rebuild. I really like Marks attention to detail and his style of building a transmission. A good and reliable transmission builder only come with time and experience.
The most helpful video on the Allison 1000 I have seen. All I was doing was replacing all of the solenoids and the pressure switch, but there is enough detail in this video of every part of the transmission so that it covered what I needed to know to do what I was doing. THANKS!
I like to rebuild my own transmission because shops to half ass work. But I would let mark rebuild any transmission after watching him work. Thanks mark for some pointers
Man no kidding! Many shops only tear down to point of failure vs a complete overhaul to bring back to new like condition. Notice most only give 12 month warranties. A minimum warranty should be 3 years or 36,000 miles with a check at 12,000 miles/1 year.
Man, transmissions have always been the scary part of cars to me. I’ve rebuilt engines and many other parts. Worked in a fab and tuning shop for 3 years. A trans always has been something I avoid at all costs. This didn’t necessarily make me feel confident in doing this rebuild myself. But it did make me know I need to send my trans to Kodiak when it goes!
Mark ,, you are a genius, i can not imagine how you remember how to put all these parts back together, you and richard at another place on the tube here, wow your experience and knowledge really shows here, i have shown this vid to all my buds man. Nice to know there are guys that totally know their stuff, now all i need is a winning lotto ticket and i could enjoy this ultra high end fun stuff,....................
I spent from 1994 to 2014 in Various GM dealers and had many, many transmissions apart but never an Allison. We just never seen them fail other then NSBU switches. The size of that park pawl is incredible! I remember when these first came out GM said that the park pawl in the LCT1000 was designed to hold the full GVW of the vehicle plus a trailer at the max tow rating of the vehicle. I thought that thing must have been big but it is a huge chunk of steel along with the pin.
Absolutely appreciate you for allowing all of us the opportunity to learn the correct manner and most importantly, the correct way to rebuild what so obviously requires our fullest attention. Thanks so much, I definitely with making some careless mistakes. I’ve learned so much,... thanks again.
I watched Mark rebuilt a few transmissions . HE always do a really nice job . I might be able to overhaul a Allison If I had a good shop manual but really I prefer to just pay a professional especially like this shop to do it right . I perfer Goerend products also . Dave has helped me before . At one time I considered the Allison for my 12 valve but I went g56 . Thanks for the videos
I applaud you as professionals. This video was awesome. The technology you work with is no less complicated than what resides inside an iPhone and I am amazed at the craftsmanship and skill required in your work. Thank you for your everyday effort in keeping this country moving forward.
HOLY CHIT MAN!!!! I can Not believe we can get this Amazing info for FREE! Thank you BOTH Very much, Wow I could watch that Pro for hours & Hours! I would bet this this video will help SOOO MANY people in the future! Thanks again Men.
Invaluable info, you know as i watched this entire video. I thought how much more useful this video alongside a mechanic how to book. I remember back in the day, one could head to a Mechanic parts store and go to their book rack, find your vehicle truck or car by date and model and BAM most everything was there that you needed to get greasy in your garage or driveway. But a video, TONS MORE USEFUL, eliminates a lot of guessing. Sry, no, I do not drive a Allison trans truck, but I watched anyway, they are popular enough transmissions to warrant a closer look, and this guys such a pro, very clear spoken easy to keep up with.👍 Great video and happy new year 2021!
I would love to teardown an Allison sometime and learn how it works. Great rebuild. My dad and I rebuilt a transmission from my mom’s car 2 years ago. It took 5 days to complete.
Im buying my first Diesel truck tomorrow. LB7 Just doing some research on the drive train and came across this video, watched it all from start to finish. Great video.
Another master at his craft just like richard over at precision transmission!! Its so fascinating as too how much is involved in a transmission just so your vehicle can change gears!!
Thank you Sir? Love the video and the explanation and the details. I am not a Master but I did overhaul many American automatic transmission and truck some Japanese and European car for 25 years and retired now. God bless you all from Tahiti French Polynesian.
You can see this engineer (Mark) has a lot of experience and using a flat screwdriver to make sure the c clip has been seated is something I and many engineers do.....great job.
Mark , I'm retiring early next year....35 + years machining......I will come work for you cheap just to learn!! I now rebuild/reman/repair jet engines. This is EASY compared to what your doing. Awesome!!
This guy is like a Doctor/Surgeon of transmissions. I would never attempt this that's why I work and earn a paycheck to pay an expert to handle stuff like this
Actually more than a doctor in doctor field everything is the same no new design, these people are so smart than the doctors because they got so many designs and they handle it well
i like how you take about the pump because i did blow one up with 8k on it... but the spacer on the inter shaft i feel you left out the lube oil passage that should be keyed for better oil flow, over all a great video!!! i def. could have used this 6 years ago on my first and my second!!! Goerend stuff has never done me wrong happy to see there stuff still doing what it does, living!!
Thanks guys for the excellent service guide just finishing up my Allison 1000 couldn't of hàd the courage to take it on without your awesome video made it so easy thanks God Bless you an your families!
The video didn't feel long at all. Planning on having my 07 LBZ trans rebuilt soon. Was wanting it to be able to handle just a few hundred more horsepower over stock. Going with a full EGR delete and then a 5 way tuning switch.
Dude your videos are some of the most helpful videos on here but this one blows everything else out of the water. I learned more in an hour of this video then I learned in 2 years of technical college for heavy duty truck repair. Nice job🤘
I'm not a diesel guy but an Attorney and an A&P IA airplane mechanic on the weekends. I found this video very interesting but also scared for owning a truck with a diesel engine. I would think it's quite expensive. Great video!!
Extremely fascinating! Never seen the guts of an Allison before. Definitely not a 700R4!! The one thing I still can't grasp..... TWO Planetary Gear Sets - SIX Gears!!?? I'm all 60, and a Retired Wrench. That's the one thing Automotive that IV never fully understood.
I live in NC ..i would drive to Marks Shop for a built lml allison...guy is a true professional and expert hands down when the time comes im making the trip
Learned some great stuff. Amazed at the expertise and build quality and care. This is definitely who you want building your Allison for your diesel truck. Thanks so much guys for sharing this teardown and rebuild!
I do this for living. Th400 transmission and 350. And 700. 4L80e and 4l60. But this is the first time that i see allison 1000 transmission rebaild. Oh and i would like to say thanks for jasse
Great tuotorial, I was a mechanic for years and a pretty good one as my record supports - but I always considered serious transmission work the realm of trained and experienced professionals such as yourself so I never did more than fluid and filters, the occasional modulator or rear output shaft seal replacement etc. I never was one to dive into anything without knowing what I was doing first, that tenet served me well and kept me out of trouble.
I used to be a transmission man for several ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers ....love watching this video, I have two Duramax GMC trucks . Nice to know the ins and outs of the Allison
What a fantastic video, it is so nice to see one completed rather than just taken apart. Such detail and workmanship. Great work on the video camera as well...
Excellent video! I don't know if there is too much heat generated from the diesel's torque for it, but petroleum jelly works well for assembly goo with gasoline transmissions. I have done several TH400's & 700R4's, & have had no problems even with 6.2L engines.
I've watched a few transmission rebuild videos to help myself understand and follow along with my builds. I've been waiting for one of the allison so here it is. Thank you for the excellent content!
Fascinating! Thanks, Mark. It's great to see a Professional Subject Matter Expert with experience show their skill. Amazing engineering and machining that goes into these transmissions.
this is exactly the kind of person u want rebuilding your trans. very pro.
He's a pro for sure but not "Very Pro" You can see he's without gloves and a surgical mask.
and 6,000$ for roughy installing new parts with a flat head screw driver ?! Yeah ok bud your maring and rushing if you don’t have the time don’t make a video then ... thanks
@@movingearth3726 you aren’t paying $6k for his labor. Get a clue.
@@movingearth3726you’ll be really mad when you learn $100k pro built trans are also assembled with a screwdriver haha

Over 1,000 pieces in many of them. The imports are the worst.
Good mechanics are under appreciated. Key word: good.
Nah, if anything technology makes it worse, they keep adding and redesigning transmissions like if they are cell phones lol
Watched it all. Its down in. Great video. Thank you.
man this guy put that back together like if he was tying his shoes , Experience shows much respect .

Thanks mark for some pointers
big murph just gotta find the right shop. But yea doing it yourself can save a bunch and be a learning experience
This man is a wizard. The gandalf of diesels. Thanks for sharing this priceless tutorial.
This guy's depth of knowledge is incredible. Look how totally in his element he is while he's wrenching on this thing. Much respect.
Easily the best video out there on explaining and showing the teardown and build of a transmission.... so when he speaks listen!
This was a great experience watching a Master. I could not take my eyes off the entire tear down and rebuild. Thanks Mark...
Tiko
Mark is a total pro. He is awesome at what he does. I loved the video and the incorporated sense of humor
This is the greatest Allison build kit installation in history! Mark you are the man! Wish I was close to Wisconsin!
Agreed
I have mastered the process of rebuilding Allison Transmissions., Just take them to people that know what they are doing. Its that simple.
HOLY CHIT MAN!!!! I can Not believe we can get this Amazing info for FREE!
Thank you BOTH Very much, Wow I could watch that Pro for hours & Hours! I would bet this this video will help SOOO MANY people in the future! Thanks again Men.
Thanks
Invaluable info, you know as i watched this entire video. I thought how much more useful this video alongside a mechanic how to book. I remember back in the day, one could head to a Mechanic parts store and go to their book rack, find your vehicle truck or car by date and model and BAM most everything was there that you needed to get greasy in your garage or driveway. But a video, TONS MORE USEFUL, eliminates a lot of guessing.
Sry, no, I do not drive a Allison trans truck, but I watched anyway, they are popular enough transmissions to warrant a closer look, and this guys such a pro, very clear spoken easy to keep up with.👍
Great video and happy new year 2021!
It amazes me how complex an automatic trans is. Looks like a very good thorough job
Another master at his craft just like richard over at precision transmission!!
Its so fascinating as too how much is involved in a transmission just so your vehicle can change gears!!
This video came on while I was making lunch, when I came back I thought it was precision transmission for almost a minute! Lol
Watched every second!! What a TRANS MAN!! Very knowledgeable
Agree, there is also a guy named Hiram Gutierrez that does mean transmission jobs.
@@dadefope80 I watch him too. You need a good amount of free time to watch his videos.
I swear I thought he was a dude
Awesome!!
The best video I have seen, the best transmission mechanic for sure
If my transmission dies
I will take it to them ,
It's all about piece of mind ,
Thanks
I learned one thing, Mark definitely knows what he's doing. Thanks for the upload.
This guy is like a Doctor/Surgeon of transmissions. I would never attempt this that's why I work and earn a paycheck to pay an expert to handle stuff like this
Actually more than a doctor in doctor field everything is the same no new design, these people are so smart than the doctors because they got so many designs and they handle it well
I’m not a little bitch so I would rebuild it myself
I can't wait till mark builds my trans the 1000 mile journey will be worth it
I always marvel at how much though, and trial and error that went into designing certain mechanical components.
The thing is that it all starts simple.
i like how you take about the pump because i did blow one up with 8k on it... but the spacer on the inter shaft i feel you left out the lube oil passage that should be keyed for better oil flow, over all a great video!!! i def. could have used this 6 years ago on my first and my second!!! Goerend stuff has never done me wrong happy to see there stuff still doing what it does, living!!
It’s amazing someone figured automatic transmissions out to start with .
This guy is amazing. Never seen anyone work so clean.
Dude your videos are some of the most helpful videos on here but this one blows everything else out of the water. I learned more in an hour of this video then I learned in 2 years of technical college for heavy duty truck repair. Nice job🤘
Thanks Jesse! 👍
Wish I knew half of what Mark knows about the Allison. Very impressive. Great vid Josh!
thanks Lance
I'm not sure but I get the feeling that you may have done this before :)
You, Sir, are a true Craftsman. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I'm not a diesel guy but an Attorney and an A&P IA airplane mechanic on the weekends. I found this video very interesting but also scared for owning a truck with a diesel engine. I would think it's quite expensive. Great video!!
Mark is a credit to his profession,,,, job well done young man, and GREAT VIDEO
Thanks 🙏
I will never complain about the cost of transmission repair ever again. Nice job!
I love this video…I wouldn’t have started a rebuild without this video…I’m having a blast breaking down my Allison so far! Thanks to you both!
How did it go? Was it pretty straight forward following the video?
Seriously loved the video! Watched from the beginning and was worth my time.
I used to be a transmission man for several ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers ....love watching this video, I have two Duramax GMC trucks . Nice to know the ins and outs of the Allison
If your gonna spend your money spend it wisely!!!! This was money well spent!!!! Great video thank you guys!!!!
I watched it all. Very informative video. You can tell when someone knows what they are doing and he does
Now i know why it's so damn expensive to get a trans rebuilt. Amazing tech and a lot of knowledge goes into this.
What a fantastic video, it is so nice to see one completed rather than just taken apart. Such detail and workmanship. Great work on the video camera as well...
Thanks
I WOULD NEVER ATTEMPT THIS ON MY OWN. neither should you, less you know just as much this dude here. this is coming from an hobbyist garage mechanic.
This guy is fast. Maybe just for the video but I would bet he runs likes this most of the time. Great vid by the real professionals.
13:03 may be the most satisfying transmission noises I've heard in a while
This looks 10x easier than the ford e04d. Mark is making it look easy.
