Interesting video. I should start poking around with video I have a Z8 that is really overkill for photography and sits around a lot. This was an interesting video i didnt know it had dual ISO at 800 thanks for sharing your perspective. I look forward to your opinion of the 35mm 1.4.
Love the video, could you share how you expose your Nlog on the Z8? Esp since it doesn't have a light meter and the only way to gauge exposure is through histogram
Might be a weird answer but I don’t use the histogram, never did. Just taught my eye on how to properly expose for shadows. Hope that answers your question.
Thanks Peter for sharing your experience, it's always great to hear your insights and watch your footage. I'm currently debating which camera to get for my indie filmmaking needs (mostly narrative, some doc stuff... solo or skeleton crew). I was leaning towards the Lumix S5IIX because I have a Blazar Nero that I'd like to use for some narrative projects, but Lumix does not have a very wide market locally (in terms of available lenses, resale value...), but then there is also the Z6III, which seems to be pretty appealing in terms of features for video. I know that your experience is with the Z8, but I also know that you have or had the Nero and explore anamorphic filmmaking quite often. What would you choose if you were in my shoes? THANKS again.
The z6lll looks like a good camera but I’m not sure if it has a downsample option like the z8 has. It is able to down sample from the 8k raw to 4.1k giving you a cleaner image. I’m very happy with the z8! I currently have the aivascope but just waiting to do some sample shots with it on the z8
By the way, only 4.1k24p is downsampled from 8k. 4.1k30p and 60p are line skipped. To make matters worse, the 4.1k24p was reported to have some nasty banding in the shadows. I'm unsure if it is that bad in real-life shooting, but they recommended avoiding shooting 4.1k24p and instead shooting 4.1k30p or 4.1k60p, which is not downsampled.
Great video man! Much appreciated. How much storage CFexpress Type B Cards do you recommend? I'm currently using a second hand nikon D5 with 2 primes and 2 tamron g2 zooms. Really considering the z8 + ftz 2 adapter.
@PeterDiBussolo that makes sense 120p to fast, but at least 4k60p are oversampled? Can you be absolutely specific in this for me? Is it in an option or just by default?
Hi Peter. Great video👏🏾. Im almost in the same boat. But i kept my sony a7s3. I have the z9 and i love it. Yes its big but the quality is impressive. My question is. Are you sure the 4.1 60p raw is oversampled? Ive been using 4k h265 60p oversampled. Yes raw are bigger files but if its oversampled too then im switching to raw.
z8 has better dynamic range and autofocus speed. z6iii may be slightly better in low light focusing but image quality wise z8 will produce more professional results.

100%. Fx3/a7siii fake low light king. Trash 12,800 Noise reduction pro max baked in. Would rather have 2nd base at 4000 iso. 12,800 is good if you’re shooting in absolute darkness which sony fan boys often do lol just a hassle to always need to use ND anytime you want to shoot at iso 2000 but you can’t, cuz the noise is really bad unless you go to 12,800. Let alone you don’t even get false colors or waveforms on fx3
It’s hard to listen to what you’re saying. The fx3’s dual native iso starts at 12,800 and cleans right up. Also saying you have seen zero grain on the z8? Thats just a ludicrous statement. @@PeterDiBussolo I understand what you’re saying but once you add a variable ND filter, ISO800 and 12,800 are cleaner than most/all of them and means you don’t need another iso other than them 2.
