I just like ThinkPads for their repairability. And like you can get them with good specs for low just because some company is doing their laptop upgrade.
I love ThinkPads-not because of the performance (mine isn’t particularly powerful)-but because they have a great feel. They're sturdy and beautiful, and installing Linux on mine has made for an amazing experience. For tasks that don’t require heavy GPU use, this laptop is perfect and a joy to work with!
Totally agree bro, I’m also a CS student and have a multitude of computers I use. My Mac is only for productivity. RUclips is only for music and coding tutorials. I also have a gaming laptop that’s only for gaming mostly because I don’t trust windows but as a side effect I don’t get distracted by it because it’s not with me all the time. I have to Consciously Make the physical change of the computer. I keep my switch with me for gaming mostly, that’s all I need.
also switched to a thinkpad (T450) and I'm in love honestly. I can't do shit that isn't studyig, cause it doesn't work well with games anymore. So no distractions.
A super powerful computer may distract us. I'm building new software projects and I set my laptop to avoid major distractions. I've set a minimalist Desktop with no icons and a few icons on the taskbar of the apps I really need to use (Notion, Matlab, Chrome, and Documents). I've been thinking of buying a brand new Macbook Pro, but I ask myself: "Do I really need all that horsepower?" It'd be great of having it, but I don't think I'd be using all its power
I do this with my uni laptop too. I do not program on my gaming computer, I go to a different room away from my nice gaming peripherals with my laptop and I let myself focus much better there.
I also have an old ThinkPad; mine is a T470 with an i5 6300U and 16GB of RAM. I'm thinking about buying another old ThinkPad like x200 , t430 or a t61 , because I fell in love with them
What do you think about dual booting in comparison to having a separate device for productivity? That way you can still have separate environments for productivity and entertainment while not sacrificing power that may be needed in some areas of productivity. In your opinion, would it just have as much benefits for productivity as in this video's method?
I tried dual booting once, but it didn't work for me. I mean, if you play video games and code, for example, dual booting would be great, but for me I changed to another computer because I'm now focused in coding only. But yeah, it depends what works better for you I guess
I actually ended up giving up my Surface Book 2 to a friend (who actually needed a laptop) and have "downsized" to my 14" MacBook Pro M1 Pro. I've been pretty disappointed with Windows lately, so I haven't looked into having a "secondary" laptop because it feels like a waste anyway; having a single laptop has been great for me. But the problem remains; because of how powerful my MBP is, I use it for a lot of things, including media... and that means I'm distracted. Honestly, in an ideal world, everyone has a single laptop and we're not just buying tech to buy tech. I want a T490 but I don't know if it'll actually help me or if I'm just doing it because I'm a tech junkie.
I mean, if you buy the thinkpad you need to know that it's to work/study only, and force it to limit entertainment, like only install the apps that you really need to work and nothing else, or at least that works for me
This was an interesting video to watch for me since i can relate. Around twelve years ago i had to sort my education out and decided to get rid of all distraction. Having different devices is not minimalism . Minimalism is more when you have 1 device you can use for everything . Having more devices for each task is the opposite of minimalism. I try to cover every task on as few devices as possible . For a phone I use my z fold so I have both tablet and phone in 1 device and a computer for gaming productivity and everything at once .. And to make sure both are USB c so I have minimalism with cables too. It's kinda nonsense to me that having an extra device for each task when you can be minimalistic and have as few items as possible. is it not more just the business, work "look" that makes the laptop seemingly ideal for work and not games or distraction? where just being older or weaker performance doesn't give it much of a "work" mode as work sometimes do need powerful computers, and my impression is that it doesn't have to be older or weaker than whatever your main gaming pc or laptop is, it's is all relative, for someone with the best computer they have is but 2GB of ram with duo core cpu from 2004, a computer with just 400MB of ram would relatively be their "work" laptop, it's more about segmentation of things in life rather the particular laptop itself and that it happens to be older and weaker than your main, it could well be just another new laptop with workstation GPU and latest gen cpu, but as long as you have that other pc that is specific for gaming, this 2nd pc can then be reserved just for work to minimise distraction, it so happens that older and weaker laptop fits the bill of being easily available and cheaper in the used market that consequentially make them the relatively older and weaker computers, yet that is but the symptom, not the root cause, so to speak, and hence if you can find a great deal for the latest thinkpad where the seller just happen to be super generous, or made a tiny dent in the corner of the laptop, and dropping the price massively, then there you have a super powerful new laptop with small fault that is separate from your main pc such that you can reserve this 2nd one for gaming. That said, I also get why one wants to collate the things that one finds to be the best with their enjoyment, aka games, aka dopaminergic activity, coz we all are lazy fks, we dread from pain and can be distracted by what is pleasant, equivalently, the environment is also important as the gaming setup, including desk, keyboard mouse and monitor could trigger the distraction, looks like aside from just an older cheaper thinkpad, you need a separate desk setup as well, or lock yourself in another room when work needs to be done
I really like the core concept of digital minimalism, however my only gripe with it is I feel like (in more extreme cases of course) it really pushes for unnecessary consumerism. Definitely not a dig at you (I love my thinkpad lol) just a general criticism of unchecked digital minimalism.
