Great review! I have the 2019 CH-R and LOVE it! It still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Not having all-wheel drive is a non-issue for me where I live. I did not get the Limited model but chose to get the XLE trim. With the money I saved from the not getting Limited trim, I added LED fog lamps as well as the "TRD pack" for the car which I highly recommend especially since the drive train did not change for 2020. Right from the dealer, Toyota offers a TRD Air Intake Kit for more horsepower and torque and TRD Lowering Springs which gives the car even better handling in the corners and lowers the stance of the car about an inch which really improves the overall look of the car. I do lose some MPGs but it is worth it especially in "Sport" mode. The safety features, the looks, and that Toyota reliability were the real selling points for me. The fact the car is so fun to drive was a real bonus.

@@tony_25or6to4 It makes no sense to me to buy a car with an automatic transmission unless it is a Hybrid. The car world will be disrupted for the near future but surely it can only be a matter of time before Toyota sells a Hybrid version of all their mainstream cars.

@@guod1973 As Moe below mentioned, the CH-R is built in Turkey. Still, that's not exactly good. As I was cleaning my house recently, I found a 15 year old copy of a German news magazine called Der Spiegel (The Mirror) that I bought years ago when I visited Germany. In the letters to the editor section, one reader wrote in to complain about the poor quality and mechanical issued of his Corolla that was built in Turkey. The reader complained that the Japan-made Toyotas that used to be imported in to Germany were way better. So, sounds like nothing much changed in the past 15 years. Maybe this is why Toyotas aren't popular in Germany. Because they're made in Turkey. Turkey is the Mexico of Europe. You make things there to save on labor costs, not because of a reputation of good quality control.
I like both the C-HR and the HR-V, slightly more towards the Honda due to more rear seat room and storage. AWD is not needed so either is fine, AWD does not define crossover for me. Storage is my biggest thing after driving aspects, comfort and good city MPH as I'm smaller town living city ratings align more like real life for me. As I'm disabled, storage gets priority to a degree.
Alex: This view is going to be abit shorter than normal. Video: 17:54 Would have bought this if it had a more powerful engine, hybrid +/- AWD. Keep up the amazing work Alex!
I would buy a Kia Soul with the choices you had a comparison for the CHR. I got to ride in a CHR and it has a terrible blind spot in the rear, I don’t like the door handle position for the rear, rear leg room is terrible, and I am not found of the last generation engine/ transmission. Corolla hatch would be a better buy.
Alex, Happy Easter to you and your SUBSCRIBERS, One of the great mysteries in the automotive world is Toyota's packaging of this car for the North American market. They leave out the Hybrid and AWD that make it so popular in Europe and still expect it to sell well. Yes folks, it sells very well over there and they can now buy them with the (relatively powerful) Hybrid system from the Lexus UX. I expect some day Toyota will finally see the light and offer a 7/8 scale RAV4 that really competes with the top sellers.
Euro buyer has so much access to better Toyota models that the ch-r hybrid would not be on my list . A Corolla wagon would pass well before this ill-conceived c-hr .
@@martinmartin5904 No one wants a new Corolla wagon more than me. My Corolla wagon is 15 years old and may only last another 10 years then what would I buy?
Personally I wish the hybrid model was sold in the US but I can see why not because of the Prius, Corolla, Camry, and RAV 4. I like the looks and especially the price and features on the Limited. Compact CUVs are a great choice for those of us with just 1 vehicle. Can haul people or stuff when needed and ok mpg when driving solo
Before I went searching for a subcompact CUV, I saw they were offering this in AWD and with their hybrid system in other markets. It was on my test-drive list. Then when I learned it would not come with either I decided to look at the HR-V, which has AWD and a hybrid system in other markets. Again, no hybrid system. Still bought an HR-V but if you want both AWD and a hybrid drivetrain you're stuck with a vehicle close to $30k.
What is the percentage of sub-compact crossovers sold in Canada with AWD, I wonder? I bet it's MUCH higher. Obviously a much smaller market (yes, I'm in Canada), but I'm researching this vehicle as my mom is interested in it. The lack of AWD is such a headscratcher for me.
If you are going to review a mainstream vehicle, especially a budget car, review the volume seller trim level. That will be a far more accurate review than reviewing insanely optioned vehicles that the vast majority of people aren't going to even consider. It matters because there can be a huge difference in driving dynamics and interior quality between the top trim optioned up to the max and all the other trim levels.
With the CH-R there is little difference between the base and the top end trim when it comes to driving dynamics. Grip is better in XLE and Limited because of the wider tires, however the XLE is the "volume" trim and Limited seems to out-sell LE in this particular vehicle because the pricing gap is quite narrow.
George G. You can request all you want, but manufacturers have press cars they lend out and that’s what you get. All the reviewers end up driving the same exact cars.
@@afcgeo882 I understand at a press event you drive what they give you. But when you're not at a press event, and most of Alex's reviews aren't hence why you see the same roads in most of his reviews, then you can request and even demand that if the car manufacturer wants there car reviewed and viewed by 100's of thousands of people on RUclips, then they need to give you the vehicle you are requesting. Alex is in CA, Tom Voelk is in WA, Sofyan is out of DC, et., so no, they aren't driving the same exact cars.
Always great reviews Alex, full of relevant information. Looks are always personal preference. To me this could be the sexiest Toyota to date. But as you said Alex, older generation engine along with lack of Allwheel and Hybrid makes it an ordinary vehicle.
With hybrid options available in other markets, its exclusion in the USA refresh is puzzling. Hell, find a way to use the rear 7hp motor from the Prius AWD here and one big complaint on this vehicle disappears. (The hideous C-pillar being different would be preferable too 😂)
Where is the Nissan Kicks for comparison? btw ,if it was the intention to be a Scion product it really does not have the functionality in interior space as was the Xb or even the Tc which shone by their huge cargo.
CHeap and Cheerful best describes this ride..”Some of the virus things” ?????? Why would the Trail Blazer get a Down arrow because it’s not driven yet?? Why wouldn’t it get a question mark instead of a strike against it?
Huge mistake from Toyota not to offer any other drivetrain options, really stupid from them, the one who decided that should be fired. In other markets this model is available both with the 120 hp hybrid from the Prius and also with the same 180 hp hybrid offered in the Lexus UX, with that drivetrain it is a great car. It also is offered with AWD, why on earth don't they offer that in the US that has probably the highest AWD demand on earth???
For me, I need something that is very good in the snow, or least AWD capable. Since I work for a school district and when it snows I must get to work safely in order to shovle and salt walkways for safety of faculty and students.
I never really understood the appeal of this model.. it's not super practical due to its weird shape, no hybrid in North America, no AWD and very low ground clearance for a crossover. Before this, there was the Matrix that at least was offered in AWD and had a quite versatile interior.
So my rav4 doesn’t have Awd But it’s offered as an option In other countries the chr has Awd So does that make it a cross over?? 🤔 Also Next gen chr Im sure will improve on what it’s lacking
Toyota wanted to bring a Niche car out, and they have accomplished this as one of the best selling car in Europe. They still want to sell Rav4, this is why it lack a AWD. This thing is really safe. When the Kia soul is on the top 10 most deaths.
Corona is Latin for crown. Corolla is the diminutive form of the word corona, so it means little crown. Fun fact: Camry is an Anglicization of the Japanese word for crown, Kamuri. So, Toyota names a few of its cars as some form of the word crown.
I think you should better off buying Hyundai Venue, Venue has about the same interior room as CHR and both are slow car, but Venue gets better fuel economy, and just in my opinion, CHR does look ugly, I would rather get a cheaper Venue than CHR.

Cross over in my opinion just means styling nothing else lack of AWD doesn't change the style so its still a cross over example the Explorer or CRV in FWD
CHR looks more like a hatchback to me, one key element of SUV/crossover is that they usually have high ground clearance, CHR has only 5.9 inches ground clearance which isn’t really high.
This thing would make an excellent EV. Give it about 200-220hp and like 260-270lb-ft tq. with about 250mi range and it would sell like hotcakes. This could be so much better and would go head to head with Kona EV, Niro EV, Bolt EV, and all the others.
Poor use of space. Shit outward visibility. No real compelling reason to get one. You're getting small car room with worse practicality, worse fuel economy, and worse handling. Just get a car.
The envisioning of "this will be a Scion vehicle" showed the desire for a youth vehicle. @@tony_25or6to4 It makes no sense to me to buy a car with an automatic transmission unless it is a Hybrid. The car world will be disrupted for the near future but surely it can only be a matter of time before Toyota sells a Hybrid version of all their mainstream cars.
In Europe is sold with hybrid. Turkey also. Why not here
Wait a moment, we just watched an "Alex on reliability" video where C-HR was brought up as a rare mis-step by Toyota. The real (not predicted) reliability of previous years of C-HR turned out to be poor. And now it's "high predicted reliability"? What gives?
Well its built in Hungary which is not exactly known for their top notch car quality or any car manufacturing that I am familiar with.
Consumer Report ranks thr C-HR very low...actually thr lowest next to Fiat 500L. A recent Motor Trend comparison reaffirms the poorly selling vehicle in U.S.
www.motortrend.com/news/cheap-small-suv-comparison-test/
@@guod1973 its built in Turkey not Hungary
Video: 17:54
Would have bought this if it had a more powerful engine, hybrid +/- AWD.
Yes I agree they should have an AWD and hybrid version. Just get the Lexus UX250H awd
I have heard Toyota is coming out with a Corolla Cross vehicle to replace the CHR
Maybe a lifted and more rugged looking Corolla Hatch
@@christyshaw784 No its not to replace. Chr is a big seller in Europe. It will be placed one below and smaller than CHR.
Toyota has committed to offering hybrid on every model. So, no, it makes no sense that there is no hybrid offered in this in the US.
The Hybrid versions sold overseas are also AWD so the practicality gets a big boost as well as the mpg.
Christine.. That has been the most sensible comment regarding this vehicle.
Scott Or a Prius AWD.
George G. He reviews what the manufacturers send him. All manufacturers do this. They only provide their top trims to the media.
@@afcgeo882 I disagree. Once you obtain a certain level of influence, if you request a certain vehicle, I bet they get that vehicle.
I am surprised you scored cabin noise the same, the new chr is supposed to be "improved" in this area. Is there no difference at all?
Always great reviews Alex, full of relevant information. Looks are always personal preference. To me this could be the sexiest Toyota to date. But as you said Alex, older generation engine along with lack of Allwheel and Hybrid makes it an ordinary vehicle.
It's makes a proven reliable engine too. No direct injection no crappy turbo
With hybrid options available in other markets, its exclusion in the USA refresh is puzzling. Hell, find a way to use the rear 7hp motor from the Prius AWD here and one big complaint on this vehicle disappears. (The hideous C-pillar being different would be preferable too 😂)
Drove one. Painfully slow. Bought a Hyundai Versa Denim. Less HP but is quieter and feels way more peppy.
John Edmond...I guess you mean Nissan Versa.
The Corolla Hatchback comes with a manual transmission option. C-HR doesn't so there's your reason to ignore the C-HR.
Americans don't drive stick.
Agreed.
Where is the Nissan Kicks for comparison? btw ,if it was the intention to be a Scion product it really does not have the functionality in interior space as was the Xb or even the Tc which shone by their huge cargo.
no awd, huge blind spot,
Thanks for making this video - I'm doing major research on a new car and.. this really helps :)
Great vehicle but no AWD must hurt sales a lot,
CHeap and Cheerful best describes this ride..”Some of the virus things” ?????? Why would the Trail Blazer get a Down arrow because it’s not driven yet?? Why wouldn’t it get a question mark instead of a strike against it?
Huge mistake from Toyota not to offer any other drivetrain options, really stupid from them, the one who decided that should be fired. In other markets this model is available both with the 120 hp hybrid from the Prius and also with the same 180 hp hybrid offered in the Lexus UX, with that drivetrain it is a great car. It also is offered with AWD, why on earth don't they offer that in the US that has probably the highest AWD demand on earth???
have a slight feeling they’re gonna replace this with the Corolla cross one day
For me, I need something that is very good in the snow, or least AWD capable. Since I work for a school district and when it snows I must get to work safely in order to shovle and salt walkways for safety of faculty and students.
Thought about a Kona or Seltos?
I never really understood the appeal of this model.. it's not super practical due to its weird shape, no hybrid in North America, no AWD and very low ground clearance for a crossover. Before this, there was the Matrix that at least was offered in AWD and had a quite versatile interior.
The Matrix is 100 times better than this.
Again, why aren’t you comparing this to the Kona?
So my rav4 doesn’t have Awd
But it’s offered as an option
In other countries the chr has Awd
So does that make it a cross over?? 🤔
Also Next gen chr Im sure will improve on what it’s lacking
Toyota wanted to bring a Niche car out, and they have accomplished this as one of the best selling car in Europe. They still want to sell Rav4, this is why it lack a AWD. This thing is really safe. When the Kia soul is on the top 10 most deaths.
I thought the video title says "Corona". Then I realized it says "Corolla". I am reading too much news these days🤦♂️🤦♀️
Toyota did have a car named Corona
Corona is Latin for crown. Corolla is the diminutive form of the word corona, so it means little crown. Fun fact: Camry is an Anglicization of the Japanese word for crown, Kamuri. So, Toyota names a few of its cars as some form of the word crown.
Most people don't drive offroad anyway. FWD is totally ok for the majority. They just want the styling, not the function of an offroader.
I love it so much. But it needs some tweaks.
CH-R should go hybrid and plug in only and replace the Prius and Prius Prime as the new Prius. That is the ideal future for this car.
Cargo space is tiny in this compared to Prius.
Toyota should put hybrids in all their models.
They sell this as a Hybrid in other markets.
Toyota promised to do just that. Toyota likes making Americans wait.
@@aliendroneservices6621 most of these folks never driven one. European s get it.
That and the Kia Soul doesn’t have all wheel drive
Other countries get this in a 6speed manual and AWD
I think you should better off buying Hyundai Venue, Venue has about the same interior room as CHR and both are slow car, but Venue gets better fuel economy, and just in my opinion, CHR does look ugly, I would rather get a cheaper Venue than CHR.
Long term reliability and quality build interior.
Moe Anthony Hyundai is pretty reliable nowadays, plus Hyundai has the best warranty. Toyota has issues with its 8 speed transmission and fuel tank issue on rav 4 recently.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 Maybe but there are many who are loyal to the brand and perhaps not interested in Hyundai. Venue is yet to be proven. Trust me as ugly as you may deem it, venues build quality is atrocious compared to this. Btw chr is not 8 speed. If iam leasing I don't care about Hyundai warranty anyway. To each is own. I never said Hyundai is not reliable.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 Don't get it twisted. Rav 4 fuel tank issues is on Hybrid only. Not the bigger sellers. Besides you tell me what is the number one selling suv. There are no issues currently with 8 speed on Rav and if there is it has been long corrected. I think you are twisting stories between the review a venue and a chr.
Moe Anthony Camry and rav 4 has 8 speed automatic transmission, and I’v heard complaints about the 8 speed, and as well as fuel tank issues on Rav4 hybrid, so you can’t assume all Toyota cars are reliable, and you can’t assume all Hyundai cars are unreliable. Just like Alex has told us, for newer cars, you can only predict the expected reliability, until the car has been around for few years on the markets.
All show with no go
Cross over in my opinion just means styling nothing else lack of AWD doesn't change the style so its still a cross over example the Explorer or CRV in FWD
CHR looks more like a hatchback to me, one key element of SUV/crossover is that they usually have high ground clearance, CHR has only 5.9 inches ground clearance which isn’t really high.
Arguably the only truly bad new Toyota you can buy.
This thing would make an excellent EV. Give it about 200-220hp and like 260-270lb-ft tq. with about 250mi range and it would sell like hotcakes.
This could be so much better and would go head to head with Kona EV, Niro EV, Bolt EV, and all the others.
No one wants an EV.
Alex please review the new corvette c8.
Now I know.. thanks for sharing bro.
Great review.
Poor use of space. Shit outward visibility. No real compelling reason to get one. You're getting small car room with worse practicality, worse fuel economy, and worse handling. Just get a car.
The envisioning of "this will be a Scion vehicle" showed the desire for a youth vehicle. Never mind the fact most Scions (xB) found love amongst Boomers. 😂 Mix in its, uh, INTERESTING looks (which has turned some away from the once-conservative Lexus SUVs as well), and I'm sure plenty of people who WOULD be looking for a Toyota vehicle in this class said "no thanks."
You’re better off buying a Corolla hatch back and raising it a few inches. It’s literally a better car in every possible way.
"Crossover" it's a hatchback with cheap plastic wheel arches.
I would love to get this for my fiance if it was offered in AWD in the states.
And hybrid.
I am a big fan of Toyota but I would recommend leaving this one alone. It is not well designed
Could you put the decibel level with the grade?
In 2018 full road test he said 74 dB.
this thing has the departure angle of a 2x4
Is the interior actually leather, or is it that dreadful "Soft Tex" stuff that Toyota is so fond of?
tjs114 At that price? 100% SofTex, which is fantastic.
I was very doubtful about fake leather but after sitting in a 4runner with softex.. it's not that bad and you forget very fast on what you are sitting.
I don’t get the title....
According to CR, this has a lousy reliability record, it is made in Turkey. No wonder! I'll stick with my Japanese made Yaris, thanks.
Woooow, Android Auto capability?? Is it 4 years ago already? lol
I mean, it looks alright....can't think of much else to say about it.
No AWD, no ventilated seats and no sunroof. I have no idea what Toyota is doing.
CH-R got shafted for the USDM. Scion died for this...
I would prefer a Corolla hatch.
Or a Prius.
Good call.
I love the styling of the C-HR, but I need AWD, at least a little better acceleration, and a sunroof! At least Toyota finally added Android Auto.
Awesome
Perhaps the worst car ever designed?
Your opinion..
