The Toyota Corolla SE is My Favorite Corolla Trim and Here's Why

  • In this video We'll take a look at the Toyota Corolla SE Nightshade edition and find out why it's my favorite trim in the current generation Toyota Corolla Line up.
The K120 Direct Shift CVT transmission in the corolla is hands down as good as a CVT can get. With the physical first gear and the way it mimics shifts.
This generation Toyota Corolla is truly an improvement over the previous generation which I've owned and compared this generation to the previous generation directly.
No car is perfect of course, the humps on the side of the dash are cosmetic and you can bump your knees on them. The car is loud of course being an entry level sedan and prices has been on the rise.
The Toyota Corolla is a very functional basic car, but in this generation in comes in a package that I truly like. Many standard features and good looks makes it a good overall value if the negatives about it don't bother you.

One thing you didn’t mention is, on the new model has a new chassis with independent rear suspension. I find the ride improved and the car is more planted on the road. Thanx for this great video. It helped me decide between 2022 Civic and 2022 Corolla SE. I purchased the Corolla SE. The selling point for me was the engine, M20A-FKS. Can not go wrong with it, good power when needed, no carbon buildup, great on gas. I followed your advise and did my 1st oil change after the 1000 miles break in period. This is a good point A to B vehicle. Drives good, very comfortable, priced right. Maybe if we stop trying to compare it with other, twice the price, performance sport cars we appreciate what Corolla has to offer.

I paid about $25K and added the extended warranty that puts it beyond 100k miles. I think the grand total with the extended warranty was $28K. This comes with oil changes, tire rotations etc. So really getting the extended bumper to bumper is totally worth it even though it's probably never going to need it.

Thank you much for this review AMD. You are a fully trusted source for me, and I appreciate it. I am in a frustrated state in that I want a "luxury Corolla" with best ride quality and I know that is the xle model. But I want that CVT (least offensive as I really want a geared automatic but not to be had), but it is not in the L model Corolla's. Wish Toyota would do more for interior sound deadening also...they dropped engine cover and no silencer pad under the hood...really cutting costs. My 2009 corolla with how they made the sound deadening and low wind noise then, is arguably quieter than current gen. Thx again!

I agree, the SE is the best value in the lineup (Nightshade is just aesthetics, I wouldn't get it). The 2.0 gets better mileage than the older 1.8. For the trims, the Hybrid and SE probably get you the most Corolla per $, though the Hybrid would be best for those cross-shopping a base Prius. The XSE is too close to the Camry SE's price range, while the Apex IMO is not worth it if you really want a sportier Corolla as it will be way stiff (Just wait for the GR!). If there is a SE 6 speed in the Toyota press fleet, I would love you to test it as well.
There's more dealers marking them up than selling at MSRP. Anyone want one, find a dealer charging MSRP, put in order in and be patient, but you can specify what factory accessories you want.

I decided on the LE over the SE. I preferred the tried and true 1.8 with no direct injection. Also found a 21 made in Japan model. Also rides softer than the SE. All positive things for me. Got it in early 21 for 19,100 and had 1,750 rebate at that time. Still get 36-38 avg in the summer. Only 33 in the brutal cold of winter. My LE is the more upscale one with aluminum wheels and all the safety sense features. And if you accelerate slowly for mpg you have no cvt drone. That happens if you floor it. I never floor it.

Perhaps Toyota Corolla engineers can morph a Lexus IS with the next generation Corolla where it combines the quietness of the Lexus IS with the roomier proportions of the Corolla. We keep our cars a long time (in excess of 10 years) and we're on our second Corolla LE, third Toyota vehicle. In the past we've owned BMW, Volvo, Volkswagen, Jaguar and Land Rover, but looking forward, it's only going to be Toyota/Lexus. Once Toyota/Lexus perfects an electric vehicle, it'll be time to give up our current 2012 Corolla! Enjoyed your video review.

I have an 02 Corolla and my neighbor upgraded from the same car to a 2021 Corolla SE which he loves everything about except the road noise, which he says is markedly higher than his old Corolla! I didn't think much of it until I recently got a ride from him and I was surprised to find out that he wasn't kidding and that the road noise was so pronounced at highway speeds; if his car wasn't brand new I would've thought that he needed to replace his wheel bearings! The noise was indeed higher than on my ancient Corolla. If I do get the new Corolla, I'd have to always have music volume on high to drown out that road noise since it would otherwise drive me nuts (or, even worse, put me to sleep)!
