  • I got some wheel weights a little while back so I want to try to make some buckshot later so I rigged up a burner setup and a cast iron pot and did a little lead melting.

Awesome DIY. I used to work in Electronics company and using lead for soldering. Keep blogging sir. You are doing a great job.

thank you for the kind words, I have done something like this many years ago, that when I found out first hand will happen if only a slight amount of water gets into the lead pot,, it explodes over everything, I was just very lucky I didn't get hit by any of that molten lead.

When I was a kid, dad would melt old batteries and wheel weights to make trotline weights and fishing line weights

I tried one time to get lead out of batteries but it looked like the lead had pretty much deteriorated so I gave up on that,, maybe I gave up to easily..lol

Most zinc weighs have a mark zN , most lead weights are soft and m ,p there is a chart on line have fun and be safe.

Nice DIY smelter. I use to make my own weights. I would go around to the tire places and get free lead.
You can always put a cast iron skillet on it and cook something.

Great idea to use the wheel to hold the burner and it was great to watch the burner in action. It does look like a lot of work to sort through the different metals

yes it is kind of a job but I enjoy doing that kind of thing, I am trying to figure out a way to mold buck shot but I haven't got a plan on how to make a mold yet, I could buy one but for no more than I would use it , it's too expensive.

This a great video Vernon, that rim set itself out just perfect for the job, it works nice for the legs to sit at an angle, the burner fits well, it holds the cross bars perfect in place and just the size for your pot, did you mention what you want to do with the lead, I guess sell it for a good price, that set up with the pot will be perfect for oxtail potjie or stew, thanks for sharing Vernon

That is quite the burner you built. Probably quite a bit cheaper than buying a deep fry burner. That would work for anything and looks cool. Stevo

yeah, the burner was 26 dollars and I think 18 for the gas, I already had the bottle and everything else was just what I had laying around here.

A neat way to make a ingot burner . You can test the wheel weights with side cuts . The side cuts will make a mark in lead wheel weights , hardly scratch a zinc wheel weight . Or do like you were with a lower fire and melt the lead and the zinc and steel will float to the top .

    • @MissouriOldTimer
      @MissouriOldTimer  2 года назад

back in the good old days, you didn't have to sort through the weights,, they were all lead before some government outfit decided they didn't want us using it.

Nice smelter. All the zinc WW’s are stamped with a ZN. I separate all those out by hand. I use a pair of cutters to check any I’m unsure about. Lead cuts, zinc and steel doesn’t. Then I keep the heat low in case I missed any. Good idea to be putting back some lead.

Using the wheel rim is a clever idea... I would like to have a go at casting but it is way down my to do list...
    Take care.

That's a great lil smelter. Sorting the lead from the metal is a pain though idn't it? A lil magnet might help.

You don't want to be inhaling that smoke from that pot because it's highly toxic sir😷 💡You can dump it all in the pot and whatever floats isn't lead, so just skim it off the top as you were doing👍

You mentioned somewhere in these comments to someone about making
    A buckshot mold
To the best of my knowledge buck shot isnt
    Exactly a precision
projectile iwas thinking about maybe you could use your drill press and one those ball shaped end mills
Assuming of course you could get one of the appropriate size just a thought
Edit: if you havent seen this yet there is a video here on youtube the guy used a 5/16. Ball end mill to make a buck shot mold
    The video is entitled
Making a buckshot mold! .wmv the channel is called gins boy and the video was posted 9 years ago hope that is of some help
