What is the atmosphere like inside a pachinko parlor?
Do strangers interact with each other while playing or is it completely silent because people are intensely concentrating?
Is alcohol served (like in Las Vegas)?
Oh, and is it true that most pachinko parlors have Yakuza connections? Or even some N Korea connections?
No alcohol in the parlors. Some fancy ones have drink services where a staff person comes around and takes orders from where you are sitting. You can even pay in balls rather than money!
The atmosphere has changed in recent years. The machine makers finally allow you to turn down the volume of the machines, and most if not all parlors are non-smoking now. The clacking of the balls is still loud, so hearing protection (ear buds or whatever) are recommended.
Regulars get to know each other. When I was a semi-regular, years ago, there were a few patrons with whom I would have passing conversation, and there were some staff who would always say hello and talk for a bit. Mostly though, people are absorbed in their machine and don't really pay attention. Sometimes when you are sitting next to someone and they notice you or you notice they get that first win there'll be a smile and nod, or a thumbs up.
