A message from Lawrence Krauss for this episode:
I first met William Shatner a little over 19 years ago when we were filming a TV inspired in part on my book, The Physics of Star Trek. The show was ultimately titled, How William Shatner Changed the World. I am not sure what I expected when I met Bill, but what I got was something completely different. After a brief period during which I felt a bit like I was being auditioned, and which I passed after we filmed a scene in which I was required to use a teleprompter to spout a long series of Star Trek technobabble, we settled in to begin to discuss the world, and I fell a bit in love.
Bill reminded me in many ways of my Uncle, who had long been my favorite relative, and the patriarch of our rather small family. His humor, his confidence, his energy, and his curiosity emerged from the crumbling armor he had originally amassed to potentially protect from him what he may have expected to be a pestering nerd. (And which, for all I know, I may have been).
As the days wore on (I think we spent 3-4 together in total), we began to talk about science and the world, and I was impressed not just with Bill’s intense curiosity and enthusiasm, but his native intelligence. Once again, I guess I had not been prepared for that.
A decade later, and perhaps seven or eight years ago, we spent a week on a Star Trek Cruise together. He of course was the headliner, and I gave some science lectures, and ended up doing two programs on stage with him-one on the program, and one more impromptu. While perhaps billed as a dialogue, the provided an opportunity for Bill to pepper me with questions about all things physics, trade jokes, and overall have a blast. I suspect that is the norm. He invests everything he gets involved in with the same joy, and charm.
So, I was over the moon, when after discussing the possibility of doing The Origins Podcast for over 2 years, Bill finally, in a weak moment, I assume, agreed. It took about 30 seconds for the same sense of fun and joy to take over, a deep friendliness to be transparent, and for Bill to basically take over. From there, I held on to my chair and just tried to enjoy the wild ride. It was fun, and informative. I had 5 pages of questions to ask him, and I managed to sneak in about 3 or 4 questions. Instead the conversation went wherever it went-most often to questions about the Universe-and it was one of the most enjoyable 90 minutes I have spent in awhile. It also gave me a chance to reconnect with Bill, and I don’t plan to wait another decade before doing it again. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

This episode is a full proof and a testament to how much you love and care about Bill. I know no one who would have kept composure in front of the barrage of interruptions BUT that's the genius behind Bill's approach: it really pushed you to go to the nitty gritty. The breakdown answers show how passionate you are about demystifying the difficulty to average people standing in their way to fathom more about our universe, all of that got rewarded with Bill's genuine awe. A fascinating episode from two guys I really think made and still make the world a better place

F**K this Captain Turd Shat'ner. Captain Kirk is back! Out to save the planet or as he claims “at least half of it…”. Which half (and for who) we may never know. His words today are as fake, as they were back in the 70s and 80s. In hindsight Star Trek was a super hit and a super scam! Roll back 2007, Shatner's disembodied head floating in space - the voice in a portentous tag line: "And so we take a cosmic ride into that new millennium; that far off reality that is the year 3000. It's the future of man....." Albeit that future will never come to be, just like the grandiose Sci-Fi fantasies of the 50s and 60s never manifested in reality. No flying cars, no “beam me up Scotty” and not even one alien out there! So much for the silly trekies and all the “cosmic rides” of woke futurist fantasy.
Star Trek at it’s foundation is an extension of American colonialism, white patriarchy, made of conservative values and racist undertones. The spectacle was invented in America, however enabled by the post A-bomb surge of science fiction. The USS Enterprise is by all means an extension of American militarism. While Star Trek peaked inside American homes, the empire in reality was dropping bombs over Vietnam, Korea, Laos etc etc killing thousands of innocent people.

He's such a young man. Having been fortunate enough to spend time with people who've reached his age and beyond, I notice a pattern: all of them, without exception, were young, their minds like sponges, ready to absorb any new knowledge that might come their way, still as inquisitive about the world around them as they had been as children. None of them 'thought old'. I can learn a lot from your 40 years' more experience on this planet than I've had so far, and your expertise too - but there is something humbling in the fact that this man has probably been asking 'why?' and 'what's that?' and 'why does that happen?' for the last 90 years, but he clearly feels he's barely touched the surface in his search for knowledge. There is so much that we don't know...one thing I do know is that I've only been listening for 26 minutes, but already it's been a pleasure. Thank you both for sharing this with us all. 😀

He doesn't move like a person in their 90's. A person that old can deteriorate suddenly or keep living for another decade.

Plain Pathetic Lawrence Krauss and this Canadian turd Shatner 😅😅😅😅

BS was supposesly extremely disrespectful and unkind to Will Wheton on set. Will idolized Bill and Bill treated him like a worthless criminal. See the video by Will online. I wish BS would apologize to the people he mistreated in his past.

Wow I've been watching Shatner since the 70's, I'm a few years younger than Krauss. Bill hardly looks older than me, it's amazing he's over 90. I understand he does a lot of hard work with horses. I'm happy to see Bill here as himself but I don't think I'd want to meet him. He's easily going to top 100, how many more years he gets past that, who the hell knows. Bill's definitely one of the healthier, luckier outliers. Hope you get many more years of entertaining us, Bill. To both Bill and Larry, live long and prosper. Good show, guys.

Right? 23 minutes in with Shat and disbelief is suspended. He's such a well of emotion I'm sure it's both frustrating and fulfilling at the same time. That conflict while tiring creates lasting memories. A good acting class or military training course is like that, constantly bombarding you with problems to solve in their space, not a comfortable space. I doubt people would forget this episode. It's invigorating. Also happy 69 Lawrie.
