  • One of the best scenes in Supernatural history from Supernatural Season 4, Episode 4 "Metamorphosis"
    Dean has just found out about Sam's secret 'mission' with Ruby (he's exorcicing demons with his mind) and the video shows their first confrontation right after Dean ran away to clear his head.
    The acting in this scene is phenomenal and it shows once again that Supernatural wouldn't be half as amazing if it weren't for Jensen and Jared. The chemistry between those two is what basically brings the show to life.

    If you think about it... this must've hurt both the brothers equally. And I don't really mean the physical part here, hell, they must've already got used to it.
    I mean that Sam has to be for once SO sorry but also feel so bad when he gets hit by hos own brother! And Dean, well... of course he feels betrayed but there's something about the hit itself. We all remember how mad he gets when somebody even just threatens to hurt Sam, so hurting his little brother himself... As angry as he might be and as right this might seem in the moment, I bet he feels every hit like it's him being beaten...
    Oh, and shoutouts to J2 for completely nailing the realtionship of these brothers!:D

    while I agree that Jensen Ackles is a great actor and does an amazing job as Dean, I think that Jared Padalecki is underappreciated in this series. Sam has to emote constantly and show everything on his face. I think that's a harder thing especially when it can fall into melodrama very easily. Plus, when he plays Lucifer in season 5, he is crazy good. There is NO trace of Sam anywhere.

      @Nicole Salmon, Dean is being a complete bigot at this point. He's attacking Sam purely based on the fact that Sam is using his powers, to help people. He doesn't know about the demon blood yet, so he's basically just deciding that the powers are evil just because he said so, because they are supernatural in origin, like that's more important that what the powers are being used for. He knows that Sam has issues with being a "monster" and he still tells Sam he would want to hunt him. That's nothing but cruel.

      Meh, I've always kind of had issues with people saying that Sam chose Ruby over Dean. Sam actually wanted Dean to work with him and Ruby. In "In the Levee Breaks" it was Dean who chose not to go with Sam if Ruby came along, so in a way you could also interpret that scene as Dean putting Ruby over Sam, in the sense that the issue of Sam working with Ruby was more important to Dean than any other part of Sam. He literally could not see past it. Not saying he didn't have good reasons for not trusting Ruby or that his desire to get Sam away from Ruby wasn't understandable, but from Sam's point of view, he needed Ruby and it was Dean who chose not to go with them if she came along. Dean chose his issues concerning Ruby over Sam.

    • @frankiehays3638
      @frankiehays3638 7 лет назад +7

      yeh maybe because he could see that she was evil from the get-go, which she was. i wouldnt want to work with her either given the choice, sam could of went with dean could he not? but he chose to go with ruby instead and gave dean the ultimatum that he cant leave ruby as well so...

    • @sk70091
      @sk70091 7 лет назад +25

      It was Dean who gave the ultimatum. "Her or me." That's an ultimatum. Dean can work with demons if it benefits him (Crowley) so his attitude about Ruby and Sam was kind of hypocritical.

      I agree that Dean can seem a little closed minded when it comss to anything supernatural, but how exactly was Dean's fault that Sam's condition got that bad? If anything it's Sam's fault that after his brother obviously being very mad and scared for him at a time, he went on with that demon blood bullshit... It was bound to get out of control as soon as it started and Dean knew it. And he was right.

    • @janiahpapaya5988
      @janiahpapaya5988 4 года назад +3

      The way he was acting was so immature. I know he was right but everytime i watch the scene i automatically side with Sam because Dean is being super irrational and has a lack of understanding. I think Dean was what really pushed Sam over the edge and led him to addiction. And obsession to prove to Dean that he CAN help people with it and it ended in the worst way possible. Its sad but i still blame Dean. He pushed him way too hard

    • @tara-fz4st
      @tara-fz4st 4 года назад +2

      @@janiahpapaya5988 I see your point and there's definitely truth in it. Dean was always looking out for Sam so he wanted to feel independent and do sth right without Dean's help and I get that.
      Later in the beginning of season 5 he says how the biggest reason he went with Ruby was because he didn't like being so dependent on Dean. So he made a mistake here because he wasn't rational, he was looking to do sth that was in HIS best interest, at a time he didn't exactly think about how Ruby might actually help him.
      I'm not blaming Sam, but I'm not blaming Dean either. It's a matter of point of view - both Dean and Sam had good and valid, but also some irrational, points - in Dean's case he was more irrational but even though people say that's just because he is bigoted about demons/other spn creatures (that's just a small part of his reasons), it's mostly because he was scared and worried about Sam. All he ever does is for Sam's safety, and sometimes that can be selfish not only to the others but Sam himself too. Let's not forget that John told Dean that he might have to kill Sam, so that was also in Dean's head while handling the whole situation.
      Since Sam and Dean disagreed on trusting Ruby and using Sam as a weapon against Lilith, Sam tried hard to make Dean understand that he was doing what's right and the only way to do that was to actually stop the apocalypse. Even if Dean was supportive or less against the whole thing, Sam would still have to drink an enormous amount of demon blood which would still result in an addiction. So yes, maybe the whole Dean not being supportive was sth that triggered Sam in a bad way, but it's a fact that he would still become addicted.
      The thing I didn't like about the way Dean handled it all was definitely how he wasn't exactly rational, but since he (his gut) was right about Ruby, I can't hold that against him.
      Dean was always saying how Sam shouldn't trust Ruby because she's a demon - yes okay, the main reason he didn't trust her was the fact that she's a demon, but it's not like they ever encountered a friendly helpful demon until that point and I can respect him being against Sam working with her.
      What I didn't like about the way Sam handled it all was choosing his own interest of not feeling helpless and dependent, thus not listening to Dean when he said they shouldn't trust Ruby. Ruby is a master manipulator and she sorta earned Sam's trust a lot of times so at the end of the day it's reasonable that later Sam didn't think about her actually lying to him, but I still think he should've thought more about Dean constantly telling him not to be with her.
      In the end I think they both had good reasoms for doing what they did, only the final scene where they fight they said and did some stuff that shouldn't be said (mostly Dean, but he said it in order trigger Sam back to "sanity").
      I really don't get people who blame just Sam or just Dean for everything in the situation, because it's pretty complex, but on the other hand when you just take all the factors into consideration it really wasn't anybody's fault, it was just different personalities and different ways of handling certain situations that created a mess from the whole thing.

    • @janiahpapaya5988
      @janiahpapaya5988 4 года назад +1

      Tara G I agree and im not saying it was all Dean’s fault, Sam was still very naive. I do remember one thing that annoyed me was Dean’s superhero complex. He always thought he had to be the one to die to save everyone or to for example fight Lillith. Its noble but so controlling that it got annoying like your brother has the power to send her back but instead of opting to work together its a fight of who does it first? I think personally I just dont like Dean so maybe thats why i see his flaws so much clearer. I dont really know

    • @tara-fz4st
      @tara-fz4st 4 года назад +2

      @@janiahpapaya5988 I didn't think you thought it was all his fault, I just wrote that at the end in general :)
      But yes usually when we're not big fans of not only fictional characters but also people irl, we see their flaws easily and when we love someone it's harder to see their flaws. I'm a big fan of Dean's character but I'd say that I really do acknowledge his flaws and bad actions and that I don't justify them when they shouldn't be justified.
      Also I completely agree about his superhero complex. It's what I was saying about his actions actually being kinda selfish but also selfless at the same time? Lol idk.
      But yeah, in short it really depends on how you look at the situation, so naturally someone who likes Sam better will side with him and the sam thing with Dean because in this particular situation, like I said, they both had good points. I was really indifferent, more accurately I was on both sides.

    Season four was a pretty tough one for the brothers. I consider myself more a Dean fan, but because Sam seemed so honestly sure of himself and of his good intentions, I sided with the idea that Dean shouldn't have been so harsh, should've looked at it from another angle. Still didn't think the demon blood was a good idea though, the whole 'path to hell is paved with good intentions' and all that. I was rather surprised when it was more or less revealed Dean was pretty spot on with his thinking for the most part, but still. Damn good acting at least.

He never tried to understand Sam's point of view. If he had shown a little more understanding and a little less judgment, and not made ultimatums about Ruby, things might have ended very differently.

      +Nadia But being mad doesn't make hitting someone okay. The way he reacted in this scene was wrong, you are not going to convince someone if you are just mean to them, it doesn't work like that, to solve a problem you have to talk to the other person, something that Dean not always understand.

      @SweetieLoveize 8 лет назад +1

      +The-LittleFangirl well Dean never acts in a healthy way, does he?😉 I think it was mostly because Dean saw that what sam was doing was wrong and that's what made him angry so he punched him so he could get a little over it! Or else he would just leave him.

      Do you have siblings? This is exactly how elder brothers and sisters react when the youngest do the shit. Sure I'm not punching my sister like Dean punched Sam but it happened once I slapped my sister because I was mad at her. I'm just trying to say that this is the way how elder siblings show they care for their brothers and sisters. I admit it's not healthy but eventually they got the message for the next time. As for Sam and Dean, Dean in this season had every right to be mad at Sam.

    You summed this up so perfectly!!! Another thing was, I liked how they made this story line about addiction as well. An underlying story here was when 1 family member is going through an addiction and the other doesn't understand it and they just expect the addiction to stop and go away. That was how Dean was with Sam. He just wanted him to stop drinking the demon blood, but he was addicted, and Dean didn't get that.

      @hakuna matata, except for when Crowley manipulated Dean into taking on the Mark of Cain, knowing it would eventually turn Dean into a demon, but neglected to tell Dean that? Or when he lied to Sam and Dean about being the one who had raised Sam from hell and that he would give Sam's soul back if they hunted alphas for him? I agree with never witch, this show has always tried so hard to make everything Sam's fault, and it is unfair.
      For example: Dean is upset with Sam for not looking for him when he was in Purgatory, even though Sam thought Dean was dead. Several episodes later Cas comes back from Purgatory. Dean had known all along Cas was alive and in Purgatory. He hadn't tried to get Cas back in any way. Does anyone blame Dean for not looking for Cas, who was in Purgatory? No, because nobody else has an attitude like Dean.
      And a more recent example of this very same thing happening was in S13 when Mary was in the apocalypse world. Dean just assumed that their mom was dead and wanted to leave it at that. The VERY same thing he pretty much nailed Sam to the cross for in S8. But no one never even mentioned this, because Dean can't do anything wrong.

    I love Dean and all but it really does annoy me how he treats Sam sometimes, Sam is doing the best he can in a crap situation. Yes it ended badly but Dean's done bad stuff too, but for some reason every time Sam messes up it's seen as a much bigger deal and everyone acts like he's this stupid, reckless kid who can't do anything right it's heart breaking. Especially when everyone they befriend trusts and likes Dean more and acts as if Sam is just Dean's little brother and nothing more. :( He's kinda a very underrated character, which is really sad.

    • @ariafaline5221
      @ariafaline5221 6 лет назад +10

      Sophie Tansley I think the difference is that the stupid things Dean has done have always come from his need to save everyone and sacrifice himself. Selling his soul for Sam, accepting the MoC, tricking Sam into being possessed by Gadreel . . . Those were all reckless choices that he made in the moment with little to no forethought as to the consequences and he made those choices to protect/save Sam. Most of the time, Dean didn't have a chance to think about what he was doing because there was no time, so he simply made a choice. Whereas Sam's biggest mistakes are usually more thought out (rather than an impulsive decision) and they are often born from a need to prove himself. Drinking demon blood and working with Ruby was a conscious decision that he made. He had time to think about what he was doing, and he still made that choice even with Dean and Bobby (and the angels) warning him about what he was doing. Sure, Dean and Bobby could have listened to Sam's side more, but Sam didn't exactly care to listen to them either. Despite the warnings, Sam continued down that path for months and wouldn't even consider the fact that he might be making a mistake.
      I think that's the difference and that's why Sam's mistakes are treated as worse than Dean's. Dean typically makes a reckless/dumb decision in the moment, then deals with the fallout on his own. Whereas Sam's mistakes are typically thought out, conscious decisions, and he doesn't usually listen to reason when someone (Dean or Bobby, usually) try to tell him that he's making a bad choice. Not trying to hate on Sam here, but that's just my observation.

      @Aria Faline, Well, we never actually got to see the moment when Sam first decided to start drinking demon blood, so you can't say you know how he came to that decision. The show has always been very good about showing us every single second of Dean making a questionable decision, so that we understand him better, but when Sam does something questionable (starting to drink demon blood, not looking for Dean in Purgatory) we're never there with him to see what lead him to that moment. The show is very much told from Dean's POV.
      And as for Sam never considering the fact that what he was doing might be wrong, that's just not true. Sam himself decided not to use his powers anymore at the end of this very episode. The only reason he went back to in "It's A Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester" was because it was the only way to save people. He used his powers against Samhain as a last resort. In fact, I'd say that the biggest reason Sam was still drinking demon blood in S4 was to save the world, and Dean. He said several times that he didn't like it, and that it scared the hell out of him, but he was still willing to do that to himself in order to stop the apocalypse. He didn't care what would happen to himself, if he could stop Lilith.

      @@ariafaline5221 When he started doing that he had seen his brother being brutaly killed, being powerless; he was alone, sucidal and didn't knew what to do, until Ruby appeared and decided to "help him". Sam was desparate, and he choose Ruby because it was the only one who "was there for him" in that fucked up situation he was in. That turn into an emotional dependence that blind him of the fact that she was a Demon and was probably liying or manipulating him. Even ignoring the fact that he ended up in an adiction to the Demon Blood.
      Or maybe he knew all of that was wrong without admiting it (that's why he didn't told Dean), he saw he was doing good, saving people and as a plus, at that point he didn't care much about himself, so if that was usefull to help others, he'll keep doing it...
      That's my interpretation.

      @@ariafaline5221 Good point; not to mention he also fucked Ruby so he was already giving into the dark side... Dean saw that and he knew since Sam hid it from him that he knew what he was doing was wrong. Sam was slowly starting to accept the demon blood within him than fight it. However it would've been nice to hear from Sams perspective on why he did it. The writers make sure to redeem Dean in every episode when not Sam. Almost as if the entire show was truly from Dean's prospective if you remember the Dginn episode where dean's blood was being drained from him and he was in this alternative world where he saw how great their lives wouldve turned out had they never started hunting

Even if Sam hadn't used his powers, and they'd found another way to kill Lilith (and they would have, because they were manipulated from both sides), the apocalypse still would have happened. Can you imagine if they'd killed Lilith with the Colt or something? I don't think anyone would have gone around saying, "damn it, why didn't anybody warn us what bad news that Colt was!" Everyone is always ready to forgive Dean but

    • @ariafaline5221
      @ariafaline5221 6 лет назад

      The difference is that when Dean broke the first seal, he literally had no idea what he was doing. He was being tortured in Hell, and believed he would be there for eternity. He didn't know what the apocalypse or the seals were.
      Sam was drinking demon blood and working with a demon despite literally everyone warning him against what he was doing. Dean and Bobby kept trying to tell Sam that he was on a dark path and he was making a mistake, and Sam refused to even hear them out, which lead to him breaking the final seal. Now, I don't hate Sam for what he did because he really thought he was doing the right thing by killing Lilith. I mean, she was a demon who was trying to free Lucifer, of course it made sense to kill her. But the way he went about everything was definitely reckless and if he'd paused to listen to Dean, things might have played out very differently.
      So, yeah, Dean and Sam both made some mistakes, but Dean breaking the first seal and Sam breaking the last were very different situations. And while I get why Sam did what he did and I don't blame him for it (not entirely anyways), he is still definitely more at fault for the apocalypse than Dean is.
