I find it funny that the US government spends so much on Medicare, and yet normal US citizens are still forking out huge sums on healthcare bills for basic stuff.
Medicare is a joke, thats why, middle income earners now are significantly worse of. The problem with the US system is that it wants to be free market but the government has screwed it. People using the US as an example of what private health care is and then saying we should avoid it are, 1, being disingenious because its not free and open, but 2 are correct, the stupid approch they have taken to appease low income workers and bribe the electorate and made it much worse for everyone.
Big problem with comparing the UK to basically anywhere else in the west, we have a MASSIVE social care spending need, there are lots of reasons for this but IMO, successive governments have bribed the electorate and have now caused huge parts of society to be reliant on social care. Most other places do not have the social problems we have so spending is less.
I think it’s just after 2006 when it spiked which would be around the financial crisis which would explain it. We’ll never return to those levels sadly

The majority of people have far higher debt than income. An income of £40k and a mortgage of £120k is a 300% debt to income ratio.
