50/50 split still is greedier than most companies that host others content. The split should be at most 30/70 with the 70 going to the artists that actually don’t use AI theft machines to “enhance” their “content” seeing as AI generated images and products aren’t able to be copyrighted at all similar to the infamous photo of a monkey that stole a camera and took a selfie.

You should add a 'tip the artist' option, so if a user downloads an image for free, but appreciates the artist, they can just tip the artist whatever price they think is fair.
I think this would go down much better than paying $4+ for a collection(s).
A lot of people will happily tip an artist if they love the free background on their device.

A lot of people won’t, and don’t, and a lot of artists would rather charge for their product than hope for charity. A classic example is video game mods, where very talented programmers spend hundreds of hours creating extremely popular software only to receive donations from a fraction of a fraction of overall users. Art, like software, is grossly undervalued by users and I don’t blame artists for wanting a bit more assurance of reasonable compensation.
In addition to just a tip button, add a checkbox for the user to cover the operating costs and transaction fees so they can decide if the artist gets the full tip, or if those fees get deducted from the tip.

The fact that Marques sat down and handled this maturely is something that is so hard to see these days and he handled this situation greatly. Taking a step back and valuing public critiques while making the app better for everyone is amazing work. Props to you *and* your team.
I can think of another very popular (non-tech) youtube'er, that basically has gone through the exact same situation this month, and he responded so unbelievably poorly. He was dismissive in responding to comments, critical of peoples opinions and ended up straight up pulling the video. At no point has he ever attempted to apologize for or fix his very apparent mistakes. MKBHD FTW!!!!
Very happy to hear about the ai enhanced label. I know every artist is different, but for me, knowing that ai was used in a piece ruins it for me, the magic of “how did they do this?” or “what events led to the creation of this?” vanishes into thin air as the answer becomes “an ai generated the most likely output of the input prompt based on a training set of existing (almost certainly stolen) artwork”.

This was an unforced error on his part for sure, but he actually managed this as a gentleman.
I build apps. I know the excitement of telling people about your app and forgetting to give full context. Nicely done.
I was a UI/UX designer but now I am building my first coded solution and I am almost done with it. Watching this has given me a lot of lessons before I've made this same mistake myself. A lot to consider and a lot to learn about context.
Massive respect for acknowledging the issue and taking responsibility unlike so many other people.
He had no choice. A loss of subs and revenue was on the cards. Now Mrwhosetheboss has more subs than him. Don't underestimate how much that will matter to this guy.
This man shows that humility leads to real growth. Perfection doesn’t exist, but the willingness to listen and learn from every experience brings you closer to it.
The ultimate win here is seeing someone wholly accept responsibility without trying to place blame on a group or an individual or downplay concern or anything. Dude here is beyond based. 👏🏻 Going to sub to this even if I don’t wind up using the app love to support artists.

@@KG_BMright, but paying artists costs money and paying for wallpapers is by definition not a necessity for anyone. The level of criticism for effectively facilitating art sales nobody needed was wholly disproportionate to the societal harm he hath wrought.
@@kpro8908 i interpreted the criticism as people being sort of insulted at how out of touch the price was. Kind of like how people would be at least taken aback if one local grocery store was selling bananas for like $50 or something. I guess the point is the app is supposed to be more like some museum art sales commission, but it definitely wasn't well marketed since it wasn't recieved like that by the majority of people.
The reactions can range from "that's dumb, I'll just never buy that" to "how dare these 1%ers be so out of touch to charge the masses such exuberant prices". Personally I think both reactions are valid.

It's not a one off price per wallpaper, it's spread across a year, and offers unlimited access to what's in the app. A more accurate comparison would be a year supply of special organic bananas for 50$, where a fair amount of the proceeds go, guaranteed, to the people growing and picking them, though you could also get regular bananas free, but run the risk of the being yoinked from a farmer's field without permission.
So yeah, the response from the community was absolutely bonkers. In top of that, many were just plain disrespectful and impatient. Give criticism, but people themselves were out of touch for how to politely and constructively offer feedback, and what constitutes a proportional response to an optional luxury. But it's apparently fun to hop on the outrage train.

What a master class of responsing to public feedback: listen, reflect and action all with authenticity.
At the core, building a product is iterative. Mistakes and solutions is the very essence of that process. It is just not all entrepreneurs that face an immediate exposure to 19.5 million followers. Getting exact honest user feedback is normally hard and attained in small doses. Marques got the whole load from the get go. This allowed mistakes to be adjusted fast. Which is a good thing.
Also pricing is super difficult. Y combinator suggest starting with a high price, in order to scope the intensity of the problem that the product solves. So in essence it was right to start high, and then adjust.
Am I the only person not surprised that MKBHD gave the situation some serious thought as a whole and found a solution?Real humble dude and that's why he's my go to guy when it comes to tech...
Most companies in the world will poison us gaslight and blame us for said poisoning and profit massively without ever being accountable. So for MKBHD to take feedback and learn from it is very respectful

After I saw this I decided to give it a shot. I was instantly taken back to the simpler times when I would spend hours on wallpaper apps looking for the perfect wallpapers for my first phone-a green iPhone 5c. Now I have a green 13 mini. Something something passage of time and things coming full circle. Thanks for bringing back the memory Marques, and good luck to you and the team on the future of Panels!
Accountability is a rare trait to have and you my friend got it.
The problem is that people don't value art in digital spaces. Going all digital has destroyed every art industry from music to movies to videogames and basically all works of art.
Yeah while the app and pricing had problems, I thought it was overlooked that MKBHD made it a point to fairly compensate/credit the artists.
If the app added the option to buy these pieces of arts as PHYSICAL prints, I wonder how many people would buy them. I'd wager, not many. Most people just don't want to pay for ANYTHING these days.
5:04 the ad blasts at full volume from your speakers, regardless of if your phone is connected via Bluetooth, silent mode or if the volume is set to super low.

Just downloaded the app a few minutes ago and tested this on the version that was just released and I haven’t had this issue.
Watching Ads in exchange of a Wallpaper is perfectly fine.
I hope there will be anime wallpapers. Getting those is honestly a pain in the butt with all the AI anime art out there. And I'd definitely like to pay artists what they deserve. This app seems like a great way.

It was basically an excuse to support artists in this AI era. People have no idea how hard it is to monetize your artwork. If I was rich, I'd 100% buy expensive artworks instead of using the free ones. People have to understand that you aren't always the market every app is targeting.

There’s a handful of creators out there, maybe less than 1% currently who are incredibly responsible. MKBHD is probably the best one of the 1%. He truly understands how the common folks think because he hasn’t forgotten his journey. This is a big big W among many for MKBHD!

Nice improvement. One thing I noticed is that the app website doesn't actually link to the app. It just has the QR code. Which makes it a bit more difficult if you are on desktop (which is a valid place to watch videos). Sure I could take my phone and scan it, but why not have the link there as well?

Hey MKBHD, can you enable muting for the ads? I hit mute switch, turn down volume and other ways, but could not mute the ads AT ALL. It gets annoying in public places, especially in libraries and what not.

If you switch the phone to the silent mode it should also mute the ads. Worked for me on the iPhone

Panels unfortunately creates a software glitch on the zfold, where the wallpaper for the inside screen keeps setting it to half a page, horizontally. When it finally does a full screen, it causes one ui to keep crashing. I had it for 3 days, and my phone kept crashing, after I un-installed it and removed the wallpaper, phone returned to normal.
Must not be scalable for fold phones. Great mention tho

Sounds like Panels was never built with the intention of targeting normal consumers that like wallpaper, but rather more towards tech reviewers (your colleague) that just wants to change their wallpaper constantly for b-roll shots, that's why its priced so high because in your context it's just $50 of small business expense.
"Okay so app didn't work, so let's make a video to cover the expenses or money we would have gotten from it's subscription". Genius.
I don't know how, but your App is somehow bypassing the phone's system volume. Even if my phone's volume is set to zero, when I get an ad, its volume plays at 100%. It's really strange 🥴 and annoying.

Is panels pointless? yes, is the pricing off? yes, but I feel this is a niche product or service for digital artists and collectors. In the future it could expand to sell more high quality visual art in various forms exclusively
something he just barely hinted at is that I think he wants to put icon packs like for Android in the app. And wallpapers is the much easier place to start with then branch off into other possibilities to customize a smartphone
