  • Pat Robertson ran for president in 1988. Robertson was a pioneer as the only Republican candidate expressing his Christian views at the time.
    He also started the practice of wooing Iowa’s network of churches, seeking their political and financial support. His strategy served him well. He finished second in the Iowa caucuses, ranking ahead of Vice President George H. W. Bush.
    Though he was not elected president, his strategy changed how candidates conducted their campaigns.

    Pat Robertson died on Thursday. He was 93 years old.
