Had the iconic voice for popular '70s hits. Then On top of Randys guitar skill and songwriting added to the mix, people and fans wanted to see how well he could do on his own. There is always the "whos the better Black Sabbath singer" war going on...more controversy. It sells.
Another good show, what makes Ozzy so unique?..for me , its always been his voice, no one else has that tonality and timber, and melodic , almost spoken style , and in the hands of great songwriters , and a red hot band he was in his element, and man could he hit the high register's with ease early on. His crispy high-ish voice and style was the perfect juxtaposition to Tonys and Geezers low growling sonic boom. He can sing aggresive, happy or melancholy and i always believed him, (by the way, his cover of John Lennons 'working class hero' is great) He is just so unpretentious and disarming and free to be himself, and he honestly appreciates the crowd,. Ive never seen another frontman clap so much along along with the beat , and he really enjoys the material he performs, whether it be old Sabs tunes or his solo stuff. He had way to much English , and specifically Birmingham in him to to be totally molded into a neat little 'conveyor belt can of beans'. the other day i read a comment , cant remember by who ,that said, 'whenever Ozzy sings , its sounds like he's always whining about something".ha! if so, he's made it an individual artform ! Theres gonna be a big 'hole in the sky' when Ozzy goes, thats for sure.

i was at that concert in phx az back in the day it was another surreal show in the hayday of heavy metal ozzy was already an established legend his appeal was that he was the voice of the 1st and greatest heavy metal band ever black sabbath
I think what Ozzy had, more than anything else, was Sharon. She ruthlessly kept the whole thing on the rails, and don't forget how important the tv show was to his career. From a musical point of view I never got it. His voice was always a bit like the sound of scraping a saucepan to me. But I guess you can't get more metal than that. At the same time he did have this strangely shambolic and loveable charisma, and there was nothing fake about him, he was never playing the part of a rock star. I think that's important. I didn't like his music, but I liked him. Apart from anything else, we come from the same part of the world. There was all the weirdness of the satanic panic in the US that in the UK we just regarded as inexplicably funny. It might have cemented Ozzy's notoriety in the US, but to us it meant nothing. Double bass drums in rock started well before Phil Taylor. Even if you leave aside prog drummers, there were plenty of hard rock drummers in the UK who used that set-up. Most notably Cozy Powell, but also Brian Downey, Andy Parker and others. Incidentally, the best guitar player Ozzy ever had was Bernie Torme, he just wasn't the right fit for Ozzy's band.

He could sing over any band that ya know very well like say Metallica, just hearing the music, u’d know it was Metallica automatically and then if Ozzy sang over that Metallica tune, well, I don’t know about anybody else but I’d be like Holy Shit, Ozzy is singing with Metallica on a tune! So if it’s a new song by Ozzy with a different guitarist or even whole new an different band members, and the song wasn’t even metal, once you hear Ozzy’s voice ya just know it’s him singing! And that’s how I can tell if their a great singer. But then again that’s just my opinion too! 😂 🤘🏼✌🏼

Never a big Sabbath fan, but the first two solo Ozzy albums are great. The truth is, he surrounded himself with talent better than him.
Because he sold his soul to the devil and married one of his daughters, Sharon. Love Ozzy music from back in the day, he was a good frontman.
