INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles-some of them of his own making.
Directors: Ethan Coen and Joel Coen
Writers: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
Producers: Scott Rudin, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
Cast: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund, Justin Timberlake
Opening December 6, 2013 (limited)

The hurt look when he asks him who wrote it.
The look Oscar gives Adam when he first does the OH OH OH kills me.
@@ecsix so funny. It's pretty much the worst song ever written.
@@PaoloLery I dunno. It's a polished and catchy recreation of the novelty records of that period. Equally bad or worse songs have ridden high on the Billboard charts in every decade of rock. Then years go by and we don't name them when we're naming the classic songs. In the film, when Llewyn hears that this goofy thing is really catching on, it's believable to me. Jim's gonna get rich.
@@simonboccanegra3811 Definitely polished and catchy! It's the lyrics that crack me up. Pres Kennedy randomly firing people into space against their will.
Justin Timberlake really is a decent actor, that reaction shot was perfect. As for the song, I think it's quite good except Adam Driver's bits, they really annoy me.
I love that Adam Driver's character holds a guitar for the whole scene and never plays it once. I don't know why but that's so funny
Might be because Adam Driver doesn't know how to play guitar
@@Paynovski - He doesn't know how to sing either, but that ain't stopping him. ;-P
tomaf yeah, except he does know how to sing. He can sing Sondheim, which isn’t for the weak!
@@sarahewson3607 - You're kidding, right? I never heard of Sondheim, so I looked him up and found a video titled, "Top 10 Best Stephen Sondheim Songs" First of all, if they are his 10 best songs, I'd hate to hear his 10 worst songs. I do not remember hearing a single one of them before, and no wonder, they were all terribly unmemorable. Most of them were just boring, but a few of them were annoying AF! And Darth kylo Boren's singing performance lived up to his sith name: BORING!!!! And btw, he was terribly cast as Darth Vader's grandson. A mediocre, goofy looking, awkward actor, yeah, great choice. He'd be great in a live-action remake of Scooby doo. He could play Scooby or Shaggy.

I just read that Adam Driver hated watching himself in this scene so much that he vowed never to watch himself in movies again. Incredible, as he is so good and hilarious in this scene. Imposter syndrome is no joke!
Sadly, it's really understandable. I know a lot of singers that can't stand to listen to themselves.
@@variant.edition Ever hear your own voice for the first time and don't like what you hear? I think it happens to most folks lolz.
He has a very distinct voice that some may find off-putting, so I don’t blame him.

it's crazy how deep Adam's voice is. He was so wonderfully hilarious in this one. And damn, Justin and Oscar killed the song
Well, Oscar and Adam did. Justin has a nasally, whiny pop voice.
It's not that deep actually let alone crazy.
I agree with the other comment that Adam's voice is not that deep at all.
Listen to the chorus and 'Bass' voice in the song 'Western Line' by Aly Cook. Now that's a deep voice.
@@stevenberning1556 I'm not saying I love JT's regular music - just not my style. But for what it's worth, I admire JT's decision to let himself play the part of the nerdy sweater dude here - including playing 'beneath' his talents.

The ending is even better.
My nephew got me to go see it, when it was released. I went in not expecting too much, although I did like the Coen Bros, and came out loving it. Carey Mulligan was real good in this, as well as the others in the clip.

@Ali Chaudhry , it makes you wonder how much great music we’ve missed out on over the years. How many great artists for some reason just never got seen.

Inside Llewyn Davis is one of my top three favorite movies, but the star wars comments are hilarious. But also kind of sad that these great actors cant be remembered for their other great works
@Jim McCracken oh I know that they are both from star wars!! It is super fun to watch that. A part of me just wishes that people would take the initiative to see Adam Driver's other works like The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and Paterson, instead of calling him Kylo all the time. Besides, I cannot not see him as Adam Sackler lol

Outer.... Space
This scene is such a masterpiece of editing - the cuts really build the excitement of performing the song, you can see Llewelyn really getting into it despite himself, and both Adam Driver and the producer really add to the levity. The scene would be fun no matter what, but the way it’s cut really makes it worth watching again and again. Oh, also, something about Star Wars
Was Justin Timberlake in the recent Star Wars prequels? Jk...👎
Great point
He gets into it 'cos he's a pro. He's getting paid for the session and he can't be half assing it.
The acting is great cos there’s a bit of him gating himself for getting into it, bit of him being a pro and wanting to get paid and a dash of him being a sarcastic twat and over selling it 😂 Isaac is such a great actor. Fantastic film.

Llewyn saw this as soulless and silly but I don't think the Coens agree; I think it's exactly as fun and joyful as they meant it to be, and their whole point was that it was Llewyn's cynicism that was holding him back from really connecting with this side of music (and thus from his own real solo career).
I take your point but I think they'd be on Llewyn's side. Maybe he doesn't see it as soulless, just kind of dumb. His reticence to solo big time was due to his bond with Timlin, as was his reticence to partner up again, both of which ultimately leave him adrift.
I love the coen bros films
Oh, is that what you think? Loser!
Oh ho.
@@tomshea8382 I mean -- it foreshadows that this is what "Makes money" and what he performs later might do well in the coffee shops of Soho, but definitely not make money. He disliked it a lot, and had cynicism but wasn't able to get that this is what was popular then.
There IS a beauty that he represents the coming folk wave but it shows that never really amounted to much, not even name reognition.
The looks on Isaac's and Timberlake's faces between 0:35 and 0:42 when Driver keeps going, "SHOOT..." are hilarious. And the way Driver starts swaying on the spot at the end cracks me up. "OUTER..........SPACE."

Adam Driver hated his performance here that he swore off not to watch his own movies!! I love this scene tho!! :(

I love the deep tone of drivers voice in general. He takes acting very seriously. No clown here...
I love this scene so much
Adam Driver and Coen brothers are a match made in movie heaven. You can tell they “get” each other.
Funny thing about music: When you intentionally write something that lacks substance, you run the risk of writing something catchy. We like to think we're creatures that crave meaning--Which makes us meaningful creatures-- In reality, some of the best music connects on a purely textural level--It means nothing to our conscious minds...That's where the subconscious mind takes over...The subconscious has questionable musical taste(???), but it sure knows how to have fun. I like this song. It's fun and doesn't demand too much of me--There are many songs that connect in a similar way.
Well put- I agree completely

Why did Adam's character even have a guitar? He's doing nothing with it. 😂
I was JUST thinking that 🤣🤣..after multiple watches. 🤣🤣
Well, he was another folk performer himself, and had even recorded his own album. One of the movie's best "sight gags" involves the unsold copies of it. He probably just came prepared to the session and then the arrangement only required him to provide vocals.

Adam Driver's always amazing no matter how big or small the role is
Al Cody never plays his guitar during the recording. He got paid that day just to go "Uh Oh! Outer...Space!"
There’s way more to this song than its silliness. It captures the anxiety and scepticism people felt during the race to the moon. The childish tone makes it more enjoyable and conveys the uncertainty people felt at the idea of going into outer space. It’s so awesome!!!
"Who sings first? You sing first? I sing first?"

In fact, this is easily my favourite from the Coen Brothers.

Man Star Wars: The Force Awakens looks amazing
Only two Oscar Nominations for this film, and neither of them are associated with the soundtrack. Shame on you, Academy.
It was nominated for sound mixing, if that counts for anything. But, yes, I agree it was extremely overlooked.
I was originally going to say "associated with sound", but not all of it's glorious sound was snubbed!
TheReas93 None of the music for this movie was made for the movie, so it didn't qualify for "Original Score". None of the songs in this movie were made for the movie, so it didn't qualify for "Best Original Song". There is no such thing as a "Best Soundtrack" Oscar. Don't get me wrong, this is a lovely and moving movie with some great music, but it, unfortunately, makes sense why it wasn't nominated for the stuff you're talking about.
Cris Carlson What? There were a few songs on the soundtrack were written for the movie including "Please Mr. Kennedy" and "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me".
Hang Me, Oh Hang Me was by Dave von Ronk. Look up his version recorded in 1963, it's very pretty. Please Mr. Kennedy was a compilation of other songs mixed together; there are actually a ton of "Please Mr. Kennedy" songs - so because they used source material from other works, it didn't qualify. Maybe a dumb rule, but yeah.
This scene is about when a professional musician has to play music that he thinks is badly written or just plain stupid in order to pay the bills. They came up with the perfect song to illustrate this point and yet, I find myself enjoying this song and returning to hear it again.
I don’t know whether or not this is one of my favorite Coen Brothers movies.

Allegedly Adam Driver hates this scene. I think it’s fantastic.
I don't think he does? The rumour probably comes from him leaving an interview when they played the clip but that's more to do with the fact he hates watching himself act.

MMACaliber Well, the biggest flaw of it is that Coen already did "Serious Man", which is exactly the same, but better. So why make the same movie for the second time? Baffling.
+MMACaliber Love this film. The problem is that you can't literally have nice things with Coen brothers. Llewyn goes to every kind of shit and that's a bit annoying. But that's all.
+MrKosobi How was it exactly the same as "A Serious Man"? Larry Gopnik was a good man who saw his life fall apart for something he never did, that happened a hundred years before he was born. Llewyn Davis was an asshole who just kind of skated through life but never found huge success, just sort of got by until his bad attitude and shitty behavior got him thrown on his ass and then he just starts over again.
I also preferred "A Serious Man", and there are definitely similarities between "A Serious Man" and "Inside Llewyn Davis". But they are still very different.
+MrKosobi It isn't the same movie. Not at all. The only baffling thing is how you could possibly think so.
+MMACaliber In my opinion it's one hell of an overrated movie, but whatever.
The convergence of all these cultural figures into one place is just freaking awesome!
