I get so sad and stressed out thinking of when my parents sell my childhood home, there’s so much character with wood/brick, all the rooms are separated with doors/arches, I’m sure the person who buys it will tear all the walls out & paint over all the brick. A brick house near our house sold & the new owners tore half the brick out. It looked like a little cottage in a story book before. Now it looks half finished. Another tore apart the garden in the front and put in mulch. Another had a Spanish home, the new owners are talking about taking apart all the details that make it Spanish . I just don’t get these “updates” people prefer😅 this video is stressing me out, but I’ll finish watching because it’s you haha

This probably doesn’t sound fun to you, but if you’re looking for an extreme challenge… I challenge you to find ONE house in Anchorage, Alaska that you like. Just one. Unlimited budget. I’m from there and the housing options are depressing as hell. Even the “nice” houses lack character and are so oddly designed.
It would be cool to see you pick out homes in Seattle since it there is a lot of craftsman bungalow architecture with a lot of natural wood. Housing in Seattle is pretty high but I think a budget of 1.5 to 2 mil would leverage some pretty cool results from neighborhoods such as ballard, fremont, queen anne, capitol hill, etc.
Detroit, Michigan at $500k or $600k max! Super historic places. Southeastern Michigan in general has some weird historic hidden gems...a lot of 1900s-1930s not-updated houses. Love this as a series!!!

For the next city, I think Chicago would be cool. You could give us a digital tour of sorts with your favorite neighborhoods in the city, and the area where you grew up!

It’s so sad seeing you go through all of these. Especially Highland Park which is where I graduated H.S. from and all of my family and friends still live there. My aunt lives up a beautiful hill and has for the last 20 years. She bought her home for 320,000 and it’s worth over a million now with very minimal updates. She did update her kitchen/bathroom and flooring to the horrible farm house style with millennial gray floors. They do not match the rest of the Spanish style interior at all. I seriously hate what they did because it’s so out of style now and they just did it 2 years ago. Every time I walked in there I saw so much potential for how it could be brought back to its glory and they stripped away the character. She also does have a small basement, which flooded earlier this year due to all of the rain. I still remember a time where all of these areas where places you didn’t necessarily want to live because of all the gang activity. It was affordable though for us Angelinos and now all of the charm of these areas is gone with the people who once inhabited these areas. I understand the pros of gentrification as it has cleaned the streets, literally from both grime and gangs, but it’s sad that it comes at the expense of generations who had history in these areas. 😢
I live in nearby Lincoln Heights and always hoped to buy a house here. I lived in Lincoln Heights forever and honestly, the gangs never bothered me. I did so much community work in LH and worked hard to make my neighborhood better - but sadly, I don't think I can afford a house here. LH is Highland Park adjacent which means that people with money want to live here now. The comraderie of community, friendliness, and neighbors looking out for each other seems to be diminishing every year. I don't blame individuals moving here (although they could be friendlier), but investors and those who seek profits from EVERYTHING. I love your videos, Paige! ❤

I live in St. Louis and some of our more charming smaller cities on the outskirts of St. Louis city proper are: Webster Groves, Kirkwood, University City and Richmond Heights. I think you will find our prices a breath of fresh air.

wow i cant believe the first one you clicked was actually cool and unique. no matter the budget here in my part of florida EVERYTHING is white granite, painted white or grey, and stripped clean to be made into just a big empty open floorplan room. like i know that i can repaint a house but theyve also been gutted of their unique touches.

My cute one story childhood home in cheviot hills (next to culver city) got torn down a few years ago to build a cookie cutter two story home that looks like all of the other new builds in the area 😢 We used to have a big front yard that all the neighborhood kids would come play at but the new house was made as massive as possible leaving virtually no green space. Wish more people appreciated older homes.
*Very* familiar with this mostly post-WWII neighborhood. 😉 Lots of homes are being razed here to build farmhouse-style or ultra-modern mini-mansions. Some of the original homes are fairly large already and many have great views. It’s a beautiful, hilly, tree-lined area. We spent many a summer swimming at the pool at Rancho Park in the early ‘70s and at Crystal’s on Robertson which used to be open to the public.
I live in Tucson AZ, but I peruse Zillow for homes in Chicago and Seattle. I am also interested in some areas of Michigan, as well as Madison, WI. I would love to see this series expand to other cities. I trust you to pick out an interesting place. This was very enjoyable, I love your content!

When I get fed up with looking at properties I can afford, I go and look at the top end. Usually I'm horrified at the bad taste and how badly they are laid out. Decor can be fixed reasonably easily, but layout is harder. Having to go through a room to get to the kitchen is the worst transgression. And then there is the question - How many bathrooms do you really want to clean?
What’s weird is you can get more bang for your buck in some areas on the west side than you can in Silverlake and Los Feliz. What’s crazy is Highland Park and especially Echo Park were not desirable at *ALL* until recently.
Would love to see more videos in the “check out this Fucking home” series. Really loved seeing realistic homes as well as your commentary to understand why they’re so great from a design lens.

When you were talking about the sqft around 4:24 you were looking at the lot size, not the home's sqft - the home's sqft is right by the price :) I was listening while making dinner and I was like holy shit that's an insanely large home lol. I love this series idea, it would be really cool if you could look abroad too! It would be so fun to check out Lisbon, Nice, Milan, etc!
Love this series so much already, and I second the idea to do episodes on how you’d design your newly “purchased” home. I think it would be fun and challenging to find a place in some of the states in the US that you might not want to live or would have trouble finding a place. I’m thinking Florida beach houses, rural states/farmlands, etc! Also vote for New England proper, like Mass, Rhode Island, even Vermont.

Was going to say, she's sleeping on Altadena, Pasadena (in some parts), Montrose, and Alhambra. They're farther out, but you get more for your money. $1M would be difficult in those places, but you'd get a sweet house for $1.5M-2.

I think Montreal could be really fun for you, like on an island, not suburbs. It has very particular architecture and mix of built form not typical for North America.
My son and his girlfriend are moving to Paris in December. She will get a fat housing subsidy from her new job too. Currently they live in Dupont Circle in DC so they’re accustomed to insane housing budgets. Yes, I vote for Paris next. But even someplace like Kansas City or Charlotte NC would be interesting too because a lot of people *have to move* for their jobs etc. To get dropped into a place where almost everything is cookie cutter is a real challenge.
Minneapolis and St Paul proper would be super cool with all of the historic neighborhoods. I just did the legit house hunt and yes, some people really f’ed up some lovely turn of the century homes… but then others are out of this world restored beautifully
I’d love to see you do this with a south eastern town, like Greenville or Charleston SC, or Franklin TN or the like, I feel like it would be interesting since housing costs are lower and there’s lots of new builds alongside really historic buildings🤪

We sold my mom's house several years ago and the couple who bought it are really cool and nice. Last year my brother stopped by and just knocked on the door and they invited him in. He took pictures of what they'd done (so far) and it's pretty much the opposite of my parents' taste, but it's cool. For example, my mom had actually walled over our fireplace and the new owners freed the fireplace again!
You could do a “what can you get in (insert city) for 2,000,000? Then choose maybe 3 different cities to see how far the $$$ go. I would like to see maybe Dallas, and Nashville. I would have chosen the same house you did.

This was fun! The only one I liked was the mid century that you dumped - haha. I like the artsy flow of light into the living room with the big window and most everything about the mid century one. It looked architectural. I had a home with all the wood in the 70s, and it was cool - but the two that you liked didn't appeal to me at all, except for the first one with the spacious big room. I esp didn't like the Echo Canyon house at all. Overall, I wouldn't live in L.A. I can't stand the traffic, the heat, the water issues, the whole Hollywood thing... I'd love to see what you find in Santa Barbara or in Monterey, Carmel area of CA.
this might be a bit too random but my boyfriend and I are in the process of moving to Japan and buying a house in the countryside (you can buy a whole ass house for like 50-100K depending on size and how decrepit they are) to renovate. I would love to see you do a video on that! Plus the houses are super cool out there, some are over 100 years old.

When I get fed up with looking at properties I can afford, I go and look at the top end. Usually I'm horrified at the bad taste and how badly they are laid out. Decor can be fixed reasonably easily, but layout is harder. Having to go through a room to get to the kitchen is the worst transgression. And then there is the question - How many bathrooms do you really want to clean?
At the top end are you really cleaning your own bathrooms? No is the answer.
Thats such a good idea. I find that sometime, many times, rich people have such terrible taste.
If you can afford the mortgage on a $2 million home you have a cleaner for sure 😅

What’s weird is you can get more bang for your buck in some areas on the west side than you can in Silverlake and Los Feliz. What’s crazy is Highland Park and especially Echo Park were not desirable at *ALL* until recently.

When you were talking about the sqft around 4:24 you were looking at the lot size, not the home's sqft - the home's sqft is right by the price :)

Was going to say, she's sleeping on Altadena, Pasadena (in some parts), Montrose, and Alhambra. They're farther out, but you get more for your money. $1M would be difficult in those places, but you'd get a sweet house for $1.5M-2.

I think Montreal could be really fun for you, like on an island, not suburbs. It has very particular architecture and mix of built form not typical for North America.
My son and his girlfriend are moving to Paris in December. She will get a fat housing subsidy from her new job too. Currently they live in Dupont Circle in DC so they’re accustomed to insane housing budgets. Yes, I vote for Paris next. But even someplace like Kansas City or Charlotte NC would be interesting too because a lot of people *have to move* for their jobs etc. To get dropped into a place where almost everything is cookie cutter is a real challenge.

We sold my mom's house several years ago and the couple who bought it are really cool and nice. Last year my brother stopped by and just knocked on the door and they invited him in. He took pictures of what they'd done (so far) and it's pretty much the opposite of my parents' taste, but it's cool. For example, my mom had actually walled over our fireplace and the new owners freed the fireplace again!
I also do this all the time! It’s less fun here in Greece tho because the houses are quite a lot uglier here, even the multi million ones.

Paige I wasn’t sure if I liked you at first, but like a nice mat of moss, you grew on me! And I mean that in a nice way because if I could replace my lawn with moss I would do it in a heartbeat! I think this this series is a great idea, and interested in one for very low budget in a not so expensive area as well.

This was fun! The only one I liked was the mid century that you dumped - haha. I like the artsy flow of light into the living room with the big window and most everything about the mid century one. It looked architectural.
I had a home with all the wood in the 70s, and it was cool - but the two that you liked didn't appeal to me at all, except for the first one with the spacious big room. I esp didn't like the Echo Canyon house at all. Overall, I wouldn't live in L.A. I can't stand the traffic, the heat, the water issues, the whole Hollywood thing... I'd love to see what you find in Santa Barbara or in Monterey, Carmel area of CA.
