  • "Curse of the Swamp Creature" is an American film directed by Larry Buchanan. Although Buchanan was making many remakes around this time, this was an original.
Deep in the rural swamps of Texas the insane Dr. Simond Trent is conducting experiments on the local swamp people in an attempt to discover the secret of evolution. When a party of oil surveyors comes upon his isolated laboratory he decides to take the final step and turn one of them into a grotesque amphibious creature.
    ---
Directed by Larry Buchanan, produced by Larry Buchanan (producer) and Edwin Tobolowsky (associate producer), written by Tony Huston, starring John Agar as Barry Rogers, Francine York as Pat Trent, Jeff Alexander as Dr. Simond Trent, Shirley McLine as Brenda Simmons, Cal Duggan as Ritchie, Charles McLine, Bill McGhee, Ted Mitchell
Roger Ready as Frenchie, Bill Thurman as Driscoll West / The Swamp Creature, Tony Huston as Tom, Gayle Johnson, Michael Tolden, Annabelle Weenick as Hotel Clerk, Patrick Cranshaw, J.V. Lee and Naomi Bruton.

Boy, this one's crap from the word "go". In Michael Whelan's Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film, his entry for this was "John Agar arrives, sits in an easy chair, and smokes cigarettes." How can ya not love it? Larry Buchanan makes Ed Wood look like Steven Speilberg. Truly a high-water mark for bad movie afficionados! This was a staple of monster movie hosts back in the 70s. Shirley Temple must've been thinking "better you than me, John."

Cheap as they are, Larry Buchanan's made for TV sci-fi films have an eerie, naturalistic quality to them, I've always found. Of the lot, I think "In the year 2889" is probably the best, although my favorite of them is "It's Alive!", which was the first one I saw when I was 9. Bill Thurman had a role in " The last picture show" in 1972. It must be the most notable movie he was ever in. Incidentally, Cloris Leachman won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in it.
If somebody could upload "The Astounding She Monster" (1957), that'd be great. How about "Sky Above Heaven" (196?) or Jess Franco's "Attack of the Robots" (1966)? "The House that Screamed" (1969) with Lilli Palmer would also be terrific. Thanks.

Love the tacky 60's cocktail scenes, the beehive, the green Capris, the "Keep your fingers crossed baby. If we find that oil, we can clear out of this stinking trap." The movie was filmed in Uncertain, Texas, where the 'Fly-N-Fish Lodge' and Airport in the early scenes still exist. It was released in Feb. 1968, not 1966. A review at the time said, "One of Z-grade schlockmeister Larry Buchanan’s better movies. That’s not to say that it’s any good, just a comment that you can probably sit all the way through it from beginning to end without falling asleep or wanting to gouge your eyes out with your own fingers."

Some of these Alzalea productions were filmed around the Dallas area, especially the White Rock Lake neighborhood. A few of the actors such as Rodger Ready was a local sportscaster for WFAA TV. Some times they would bring on old "corny dog" king Mr. Fletcher who would play a military colonel or general of some sort. Tommy Kirk, an old Disney actor from the Mickey Mouse Club, would appear in a few of Alzalea productions. Another veteran actor Paul Birch would also appear. I know this, because I lived in the neighborhood at the time.

Wouldn't you know, I grew up to get to know that crazy woman. So much of this stuff should be taken in context. You know, like Godzilla from the 50s and Mothrau, spelling again may be off. The mad scientist looks a bit like a cross between D.B. Cooper and Hunter Thompson. The dude who beat up the punk in the hotel room was in "It's Alive." I need to watch "Mars Needs Women" or "Creatures Of Destruction" next. Movies like this are pure drive-in swill at their best (or, worst). Break out the air freshener after you watch this. Ha!

This has to be,the cheapest Horror movie ever made! the dialog alone,is like having a shot of gum numbing novocaine! but back in the day,American International was the king of serious low budget flicks-and most of them, were much better then this movie!
Francine York,God Bless her, played in this movie, and gets a lot of exposure from this Turkey! this movie was so cheap, that in one scene, where the guy is chasing the Black girl, who leads the man into quicksand, was just "quickwater",and while there is some truth between water and quicksand, this shot, just didn't show enough believability! even the make-up looked liked something from a Mr Patatohead toy set! all in all,"CURSE OF THE SWAMP CREATURE" is so bad, that it's quite good! Larry Buchanan goes down in history,as one of the kings of the extremely cheap moviemakers,,almost in the same vein as "PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE",if not, worse enough!

Hey mister, don't make this critique personal-everybody's entitled to an opinion, and i've stated mine openly and honestly,so if that annoys or bothers you, then don't waste your time,,you have more important things to do,besides having a hissy fit over a cheaply made horror movie, with an even cheaper budget! "CURSE OF THE SWAMP CREATURE" will always be one of those highly cheap movies, which are still fun to watch, despite the cheesy dialog, and the seriously BAD acting, but this turkey was released by American International, who was a superior studio, that thrived on low budget movies, and had a major success with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello's BEACH films, which was THE ultimate franchise of its time! also, there are PLENTY of Turkeys out there, that make this movie minor in comparison-so please,,go easy on the snob stuff,i'm not Leonard Maltin or Gene Sisco!

Please let's be civil-this isn't a pissing contest, and if i've offended you, then let's fix this! we don't have to get into name calling, and especially over an obscure, low budget thriller that was made 50 years ago! and i agree with your other opinion, because Hollywood today really does suck! when "CURSE OF THE SWAMP CREATURE" was made in 1966,it was one of many low budget thrillers made and released by American International Pictures, when Samuel Z Arkoff was alive and running a studio, which did pretty well back in the 50s and 70s,before they were brought by rival company Filmways, and eventually Orion Pictures Corp, before MGM brought them in 1997! i occasionally communicate with the movie's co-star Francine York on her Facebook page, and to this day,she still gets lots of serious Fan mail about "CURSE"-all i was trying to do,was to give an honest opinion about how low budget this movie was-didn't think i'd be stepping on anyone's pride over the critic review,so again, many apologies!

      Oh,and i'm no liberal either,and i support the 2nd Amendment right for
Americans to own guns-and despite your other statement,i also like Matt Damon's "BOURNE" movies, and look forward to the fifth one, being released by the end of this month! it's one of the few Hollywood movies that i enjoy!

    • @MONGOOSE1ful
      @MONGOOSE1ful 8 лет назад +1

Who's a fool,,me? what do you have against Matt Damon? because whatever Australia's Gun control measures are,,that's them, not us!
just remember H.G.C. that there are lots of liberal actors in liberal Hollywood, that support goofy causes and movements-i have issues with the LGBT movement, and Hollywood supporting this faction-their
values are not any of our business, nor would i want them being used in any of our movies! as for Damon,i don't support his,or any other current actor's cause,,not my thing! many of the people i like in this business are either retired or deceased, and believe me,i am very picky
about what and who i like, when it comes to Films and TV ! and question,,what is a GWN? i support our 2nd Amendment, because all these liberal laws (too many of them!) don't apply to Terrorists and hard core criminals, especially where the American public's right to self protection is concerned! did you know that The Social Security Administration is implementing a plan to confiscate and seize the many legal Guns of our Senior citizens, and that Obama's control of the VA has also screwed over many of Military vets, which is also targeted for Gun confiscation,if they wish to receive their benefits,,so how seriously retarded and screwed-up is that? you call Matt Damon "Matt Gayman",you think he's queer? my guess is,,that you're not a huge fan of this man,,i get that! did you know that he wasn't the only actor to play "Jason Bourne",,it was Richard Chamberlain, who played him,in a Warner Bros.Television produced TV movie for ABC in 1987 or 1988-and ironically,Chamberlain, who i've actually met,is also Gay,and that's sad,,but that's his choice and personal life, which is where that should've stayed! fools vary, nor do i see myself as one,,or you! we both have focused interests, and we both know what we enjoy and value! i can live and exist on old Primetime vintage TV,anyday before i
watch the shit they're showing now,,no thanks!

HGC,you seem to have serious issues with these liberals, nor do i like being told i'm not bright-who made you perfect, all of a sudden? who said that i need to know a liberal from a conservative? you attack me,for showing honest critique over an obscure movie made 50 years ago, then you compound the insult by saying i'm not too bright,,really?didn't realize that Mr Damon was part of the liberal activist list! you are the first person who's pointed that out to me,so i will be more observant over the "brought and paid for, mouth pieces" you mentioned, but let's not resort to petty insults, because that's such a waste of time for both of us! here's the bottomline: i agree with most of your views, because i don't like the direction our country is headed, especially with a pussy President, who has so far, evaded impeachment,,so i am no fan of the liberal left, let alone the liberal media! i'll learn about Damon in due time, but like you,i don't support Gun confiscation, because the right to protect ourselves is extremely serious-and yes, today's acting business is filled with plenty liberal no talents,,that is something that we can both agree upon!
