The trim is used if you have a mask then anything outside of the mask will be trimmed off.

Hi there Elena, maybe you already know it by now (as this video is already from a year ago) but the difference between the merge and trim tool is also when using similar colors in one design. When using the trim tool it will trim the parts no matter whether they are similar colors or not. When using the merge tool, it will merge the similar colors together and "trim" them from the other colors. :D Thank you for all the amazing videos.
