Learning to Knee Drag in 5 Minutes Start to Finish | Beginner Honda cbr 600rr

  • Today on Jon's Moto Garagee I revisit the knee drag on the Honda CBR600RR. I tried my luck at it the other day and decided to call it quits because I felt a bit sketchy. After reviewing the footage and reading up on some techniques, I give it another shot. Keep in mind that I'm a beginner learning to get my knee down on a motorcycle --a sport bikes specifically--basically for the first time. This is not intended to be a how-to knee drag, but rather a documentation of my progress over the session.
    Gear I Use:
    Lapel Mic w/GoPro Hero5 Connection (everything you need for audio setup): amzn.to/2Wzw6W1
    Simpson Bandit Ghost Helmet: amzn.to/2Go1RLI
    GoPro Hero 4: amzn.to/2t38USf
    Fox Gloves: amzn.to/2D30OOj
    For a proper how-to knee drag on any bike, I recommend checking out MotoJitsu (Fast Eddie). He knee drags everything from a Liter bike to a Harley Street Glide (I kid you not).
    Again, this is the newbie virsion of learning how to knee drag in about 5 minutes (I spent about 10 minutes trying it the session prior).
    Enjoy!

    Having a dead end street like that is awesome for practice. If you let up on the throttle a bit (lower maintenance throttle) your radius will tighten up at the same lean angle. When you went a little wide near the sidewalk it looked like you tried to stand the bike up. Let off the throttle and stay committed in the turn. Your radius is directly related to your speed. Keep up the progression, you are going to be a great riser 😎

    That was awesome! I am working on getting my knee down as well and I am almost there. I believe bad form is the reason I have been unsuccessful, I am riding over the wear markers at the edge of the surface of my Dunlop’s. I heard you remind yourself with “body, head, bike, I have watched those videos too!
    You are there, I believe your form will get better naturally as you practice more. Look out Lorenzo, Marquez and Rossi!

    Turn your head man. You're looking straight ahead, look where you want to go

  • @mattnsac
    @mattnsac 5 лет назад +24

    countersteering (push your bars away from the turn direction) will get the bike to drop down , but you still need centrifugal force to keep you from falling over. You are looking for lean ANGLE not just saying you hung off enough to touch your knee down. When you have it down, youll do elbow drags no problem.

    • @mattnsac
      @mattnsac 4 года назад +10

      @@TreGC69 Yes. You probably already countersteer while in a turn subconsciously, but pressing out more will cause it to really drop so be ready for it and have enough speed to do it without falling over. Id suggest run frame sliders, have full gear on and try it on a VERY large parking lot such as an empty shopping mall or an arena parking lot. You wanna be going over 30mph to have the proper centrifugal force to keep you from just falling over, doing it in a col-de-sac doesnt allow enough speed to drop down. I learned it spening a lot of time on cloverleafs later at night when nobody is going on or off the freeway

    • @TreGC69
      @TreGC69 4 года назад +1

      Matt B ah makes sense, it straightens the front wheel n allow for more lean. Thanks for the reaponse

    • @s1dew1nd3r4
      @s1dew1nd3r4 4 года назад +2

      @@TreGC69 As Matt B said, you actually want to stand the bike up by pushing it away - the reason motogp riders an the like hang off is to actually keep the bike itself as upright through the corner as possible. Think of it as you are hanging off in order to hold the bike upright/centred as possible not actually lean the bike.

    Glad to see you got your knee down. The more you practice, the better you will get. And the more time you have on that bike, the more comfortable you will be to practice things like counter-steering and riding positions. If you really want to get some great experience, you should do some local track days. There, you will have a lot of other people that can help you and you will also be in a much safer environment to practice. Also, the track will have big long turns so you can get your tires nice and hot, that way you won't low-side. With the big long turns, you will have plenty of time to lean the bike over further and the further over the bike is, the easier it is to drag your knee.

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I'd love to hit a track day at some point. Unfortunately at the moment, I don't have a sport bike that's my daily driver. The cbr in this video was one I was flipping and it sold pretty fast (good thing I didn't lay it down. Lol). Surprisingly, the honda goldwing and harley fatbob were two of the easier bikes to knee drag on. Anyway, I definitely need to get to a track and dial in the proper technique. Like you said, a much better--and safer--environment for learning and practicing. Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting! Ride safe, brother!

    I'm not an expert bike rider due to my countries roads but the only reason I see you aren't getting your knee down easier is because you aren't letting it happen naturally, your too conscious about this goal and you are forgetting counter steering, if you counter steer enough and just let your knee be in a triangle your body will start learning to use your knee as an instinctive precaution to not crash. Watching a lot of MotoGP those past weeks, I tried to adjust my position to match what I saw: not locked up with the knee but the part slightly before, chest resting on the tank, inside foot along the bike so it doesn't drag. It feels so much more stable, and also impressive as your head gets closer to the ground.
    Posing the video at 2:37, I find that your position looks correct (though I'm no expert myself). I think you just need to drop your shoulder and elbow a tad lower (head closer to the inside hand, elbow closer to the knee). You might need a bigger area to practice, like an empty car park, and trust in your tyres and lean that bike! ;)

    I don't get why people want to "get their knee down". It doesn't make you go faster. What makes you go faster is going faster, to the point where putting your knee down becomes a necessity.

    All the comments saying “lean the bike over more” just keep in mind when doing this that the bike has less traction when leaned over that far and it doesn’t take much to low side. My brother just totaled his fz09 because he leaned to hard and didn’t hang off enough. Hit a tiny little dip in the road and lost traction. That was all it took.

    Your technique is bad because you don’t have on proper sliders. The thickness of the slider will allow you to touch the ground without having to hang so far off the bike and maintain control without leaning the bike over as much...

    Hi, I have a question how did you managed the fear of leaning more far? I worked on my body position and it seems OK, I do everything right but can't go down over a certain point. When I accelerate I just bigger circles instead of leaning more and go faster on the same line... Is that a mind problem? I just do not believe in my bike it will handle the angle. I have a sport bike (R6) with a good Pirelli Rosso II Corsa tyres so the equipment is ok. What do you suggest? Thanks for the video.

      Don't try to drag knee in a circle. It's completly dumb. Hit the track on high speed and your bike will lean in automatically with the right technique. I suggest to you to watch "twist of the wrist".
