Dragging Knee On A Sportbike | How I Learned

- Hey everyone, I wanted to cover this bc I've had SO many people ask me how I learned and how I'm so comfortable with it. Truth be told I was probably always within a few inches of dragging my knee but it was little tweaks in body position that really helped me get my knee down. Thanks for watching and be on the lookout for my in depth video covering how to drag knee, hopefully soon! Thanks for watching! :)

Thumbs up for a tutorial on knee dragging 👍🏻
I know I’ve helped thousands of people learn how to wheelie from my tutorials so I think I could do an in depth videos showing you the simplest way of getting a knee down. Thanks for watching everyone!
cool
I’m a local rider in that area I’m sure I’ve seen you out there lol
i would be delighted if you'll make a in depth tutorial on how to drag knee....... subscriber here from the Philippines..

@@Arealprizeguy unfortunately we dont have a track here in our place hehe
Knee dragging isn’t about getting low. It’s about coming off the bike and holding it upright while your body position lowers to propel you through the curve. Knee dragging is about keeping the bike upright as much as possible through the corners to maintain maximum traction so you can get more speed!
Exactly! 💯
@@SALTxTHExWOUND can you talk about the knee/foot position on adjustable rear sets?
What's optimal for knee dragging?
@@VirtuosoX1just have your toes on the footpegs, dont place the middle of your foot on it, otherwise you are going to scratch your toes on the tar
If your trying to hold the bike up right then how is the bike leaning over into a turn?
I’m just trying to understand this better
@@HookLine48no one really has answers for that
Big difference between reaching just to drag knee and it being a byproduct of corner speed and proper body position. I remember when I used to burn through a set of sliders every trackday ten years ago, now I go through a set every two to three seasons of racing and track days because I only skim the surface instead of planting my knee into the ground.
Absolutely! My first set I wore out in maybe a month, now I’m a lot better with hitting my knee and then picking up just a tad to barely skim the surface. I’m mostly using it as a gauge now that I’m used to it. 👍🏻
That's the best description I think. It's used as a gauge for how committed/leaned you actually are.
Think it’s just because some people want to learn how to wheelie and some get their knee down.
@@MIKEDUZZI420 nailed it.. you literally just use your knee touching the ground to tell you you're at maximum lean angle w/ the best grip. Not sure how people got to thinking you use your knee like a training wheel to keep you from falling over..lol
Dragging knee and learning how to truly ride is one of those things that you just can't explain the rush it gives you. When you hang knee a quart of the way through a turn and then open up the throttle out of it,is an other worldly feeling
Is it me or do we all bikers feel better leaning left? Maybe majority of us? 🤔
I feel better leaning right! I think is a bit like 'when you stand on a bicycle without pedaling, which foot is forward?', most people leave the the left foot forward. Or like being goofy/regular on a skateboard.
I feel better leaning right
i only hate leaning right going downhill
Yeah cause of the throttle
You right handed ? Then yes. If you're left handed them right lean feels better, cause of the counter steer inputs
Also worth mentioning it makes a huge difference how tall someone’s legs are. Someone with tall legs will have a much easier time to drag knee than someone who is shorter or has short legs, in the same corner with same body position and sane speed. That’s something people completely miss.
so im 5'5 witha 29ish inch inseam, should i not drop a knee or will I just lowside lol
Im 6’2 1/2 and i havent dragged knee yet but ive been super close
You’re absolutely correct about not needing to be leaned over anymore than usual to drag knee. The whole purpose of hanging off the bike is to change your combine center of gravity so you can achieve the same turn radius with less lean angle
My first time was so casual... I just found the perfect road and turn and I tried...
It was a left turn, I always felt more confident on lefts, pretty big turn, 2 lanes, lots of space to make corrections if necessary and decent speed.
I touched the pad for like 0,1 and it was scary **panik** but at least I knew where I was, and I knew I could do it. Ass out, chest out, try again, and boom , new scratch, I was so proud... My pads where new and 1 month later I had to change them because they where destroyed lol.
Now I barely touch my knee, I only use it as a lean angle indicator and I don't necessarily feel the need to touch down on every corner 🤷
Right now I'm more interested in a better body position (as low and out as possible) than knee drag, and honestly, I thinks it's better to get a good body position rather than knee down.
😎👍
It really is that click that happens. First knee down was in a parking lot for me and it took damn near an hour total over 2 days to be able to do it at will. All the practice was finding that comfortable body position with one butt cheek off and committing head and shoulders near mirrors. Now it's muscle memory 💪
Exactly! Thanks for watching!

Definitely planning on it here soon!
Long time since we've last spoke bro. Looks like your channel has turned out fantastic. I haven't ridin a motorcycle since the daytona had been stolen 6 years ago. I've finally decided to hop back in the saddle and I'm bike shopping for next season. Just wanted to say hey and keep up the awesome work bro.
Hey man, long time indeed! Happy to hear you’re getting ready to ride again, good luck and welcome back! 😁👏🏻
Congrats I was trying to drag knee when I first started riding and I couldn't lean a bike down at all and my body position was awful until my friend show me the right body position and I follow him on a mountain road and I couldn't lean right at all and the first corner was a right so look at him first then looking at the corner and I drag knee the first time and getting better at it. It suprise me how much body position made a difference
Your videos are always so entertaining and so well done 👏. I am always learning from watching your videos.
Thank you so much, truly appreciate that! 🙏🏻
Most riders feel more comfortable on left turns and not right because the throttle is on the right. When you turn right, your right arm is not planted and you have to change hand position in order to correctly operate the throttle so it feel more difficult. On left turns, your right arms is usually planted/draped on the tank allowing for easier throttle control (also you don't have to change the hand position).
Very true when I think about it
I feel more comfortable with right turns, but not left turns🥴 lol.
Ayeeee haha 😂 I dragged right knee first too. That swingarm angle is sick!
Thanks bro! Haha so strange right! Thanks for pushing me 👊🏻💪🏻
@@SALTxTHExWOUND any time man 💪 you, Heather and Papa Salt are great people 😁
Great video man. More videos on this would be awesome. I hope you film teaching Heather to drag knee.
Thanks Jay, I most definitely will 👊🏻
In 1986 where I lived there were no track days. So I would go to Interstate clover leaf exits/entrances and practice there late at night and no traffic to worry about. It’s all right hand clover leafs so you can have a blast. Just have to chill a bit so you don’t cook the tires because you’re always going right.
you might touch right first BECAUSE you're less comfortable on that side. Because you're less comfortable turning to the right you've got a different (slightly reduced) hang-off position which causes the bike to lean differently. look your helm cam position when cornering on left vs. right -- you're more off the bike to the left (that is, more comfortable getting off the bike, reducing required lean to take a corner @ speed). just a thought.
You could be onto something 👍🏻
Nice man! I need pants with pucks. I thought the same thing too about needed to go faster. Great teaching video!
Thanks as always brother! Get you a suit already!

hey man...thanks for this video...I appreciate it and look forward to your other video. At this point I am late to this one so Ima go look for the other one. Hopefully you actually made it.
It’s a lot easier with long flexible legs.
Shorter stiffer persons will have to lean over way more.
This is forgotten when talking about knee down.
Look at moto jitsu. He can do knee down with almost zero lean angle because he can do split with his legs.
You make it look easy. I've got less than half an inch left on my tyre but still not getting my knee down. Maybe I need to push more on the inside bar, or just stretch my knee out.
You'll get there, do a track day if you can and I guarantee you'll touch down. good luck!
@@SALTxTHExWOUND went out tonight and touched down twice on my left knee. Couple scary moments when I rolled off and the engine braking made the front dive mid corner. I used third, fourth gear seems much smoother.
Right turns seem harder as we drive in the left lane and I always turn in too tight and worry il end up hitting oncoming traffic or slipping on the painted lines.
Very happy I felt the knee touch down tonight though!
It scuffed the top of the knee slider rather than the bottom which was surprising.

Are you pushing on the inside bar to drag knee?
What GoPro Mount are you using? Thanks bro!
nice, but there is a big BUT over here. dragging knee of public road most of the times is unnecessary if you want to go fast.
it's only purpose is if you want to take crazy photos for IG.
take for example TT riders. Guy Martin, John Mcguinness and many others, can do a whole TT (practice, races etc) with only a pair of knee pads.
we don't have to wonder if they go fast, it's oblvious. drag knee is only helpfull on a track to see how much you leaned....
personaly, i learned to drag without ever try it. i don't ride with knees-legs out so i don't drag so often (don't know why, i used it like this).
pads are scratched, but i have the same pair more than 2 years, haha.
never ride over your limits. have pattience, ride safe!
Man, love your content, but I would probably recommend that you guys go do a track day or track riding course before pushing the street knee dragging any further. The turns that you get at a track are so different and so much more fun/adequate for doing it, that it will probably give you a different perspective on the matter.
I'm just an average rider, but I know going to a track did a lot for me and now I don`t see myself trying to drag knee on the street anymore, mainly because of the unnecessary added risk, specially on two way roads. Ride safe and all the best!
Thanks for watching Johnny, we've got our tracks booked for 3 weeks from now! :)

Not trying to be a know it all, but I seen a video of one of the Suzuki GP riders showing how you pivot the ball of your foot on the beg where your heel is almost on the frame, you don’t worrry about toe drag. It’s pretty helpful actually
Yeah that’s similar to what I do, I’m basically putting my heel up above the heel guard

how tall are you? if you are closer to 6 feet you don't need to lean so much to touch the ground with ur knee as a shorter guy.

Alpinestars missile
Did you have to adjust your tire pressure? Like drop them down a few psi?
No, I've pretty much ran the same PSI for the past few years, I run 32front/30rear and my tread wears evenly. On track I'll likely have to adjust for the heat it'll create.
im trying to start to lean off the bike, but i ride in jeans and a tshirt (plus a helmet and gloves). I havent leaned my kz400 too much. Im not looking too buy gear with knee pucks or anything, im fine with my Adidas Gazelles and not being a street Rossi on my 77 kawa, but I want the leans.

Do you mind me asking how tall are you, since I'm 5'7" and it takes me forever to be able to drag a knee
I'm 5'11" buy my wife drags knee at 5'5" also
Dragging knee in a corner out of necessity to take the curve at a higher speed makes sense. But just doing it for the hell of it seems a bit silly. The point is to take corners at a higher speed and getting the bike over more in order to take the corner.
It depends on what you’re aiming for. On track, yes I agree you want to get faster lap times. On the street it’s used as a gauge of knowing how far over you’re leaned and how much more you can lean safely. 👍🏻
Well, I was taught (by national champs) to always use as little lean as possible (street and track) and the knee down is totally pointless unless it happens naturally because of the (high) pace and corner speed. It's nothing, but an indicator that you are near/at maximum lean. Modifying body position just to drag knee is pointless, especially at lower speeds, and your general riding will suffer.
Exactly. And it’s not me over exaggerating my body position, it’s me being the RIGHT body position so that when I’m leaned over I know where I’m at. Before I was a little crossed up and had slowly been working on that. You’ll see what I mean when I do my tutorial. Thanks for watching brother! 👍🏻
understand
@@SALTxTHExWOUND Keep safe out there! I keep knee dragging solely for the track! Being crossed up us a very common mistake, the easiest way to spot and correct it is to have someone following you with a camera, the other way is to have your chin around the end of the inside handle bar..

Thanks for watching Joel, ride safe! 👊🏻
Its saver to hang off the bike because you get your tyres are more compressed to the road when doing it.
Exactly, also leaning off the bike more helps keep the bike more upright through the corner and maintain a bigger contact patch 👍🏻
7:41 what do you mean by pushing off?
Pushing with your opposite leg. Be safe bro!
I think you feel more comfortable leaning left, because if u drop the bike leaning left, the chance for you hitting a car coming from the opposite direction is not as high as leaning right.
It's usually because the throttle is on the right. Have to learn to hold the throttle hand differently to get more comfortable.
How tall are you? It seems like you’re moving relatively little. I’m 5’9 and struggle busin.
I'm 5'11", you don't need to move much tbh just takes practice
ive scraped my peg but not my knee lol
You do NOT want to scrape your peg, that can cause your wheel to lift off the ground slightly and lowside you. Work on your body position, if you are dragging peg you can drag knee veryyy easily. Do a track day and I guarantee you'll drag knee on the first couple sessions. Good luck!

@@SALTxTHExWOUND Always m8:)
Hello there
From what I hear - you add throttle when you lean bike. Problem with it - you can not do both at the same time. Or you’re might “ask” more traction fro rear than it can provide.
You want to be steady on the throttle during lean, you add throttle as you’re standing the bike back up out of the corner, never add throttle at full lean
@@SALTxTHExWOUND from engine sound - you’re adding throttle. you’re right about steady throttle - but it needs to happen after you added desired lean. lean is a by product of speed, you’re matching speed with lean angle, otherwise bike would either fall down or will continue turning. ruclips.net/video/O9jsQJ04kVM/видео.html - here is a better explanation what i’m talking about. Also lookup Simot Crafar video on turning with closed throttle

Don't bother with another video. You obviously don't understand why knee dragging happens. It's not about looking good.
When you come under a heavy breaking situation. Makes sense to open your knees wide to spoil airflow and create more air resistance. when you turn you should have shifted your ass to the inside which brings your outside leg in tight and your inside knee becomes a pavement sensor, not a fireworks show. Your not supposed to use them as Teflon grinders but touch sensors.
Awesome! Thanks for watching lol
It looks like your off the bike …
Dragging knee is pointless and people need to be extremely careful, obviously, because pucks can get caught in road cracks etc
I wouldn’t say it’s pointless, it’s the safest way of gauging your lean angle. Leaning further and further with bad body position and no gauze is a recipe for catastrophe.
@@SALTxTHExWOUND good point
The point is so you don't have to lean your bike over as much, less lean is less risk.
The goal shouldn't be to drag knee. You could've went thru every one of those corners without touching the ground and been just a fast, even more stable. You're literally just trying to touch to brag about it lol
