I'd like to learn BSL but this was way to fast for me, sorry. As a beginner I would need to be taught sign by sign... I think this is good for somebody who already knows BSL. But if you are a total beginner is a bit pointless.
Hi, I do BSL. I have made an alphabet tutorial and I'll be making more tutorials over the next few days. I also sign to songs too if that helps. :)
Federica Bianchi learning bsl and absolutely agree he'd to keep rewinding this
Sonia!!..Way too fast for an absolute beginner!!..I got Derek..but panicked after that..But I've already put in 3 months..How's a starter going to get this..Sloooooooly!
Hold up! Hold up! Howwww... did this woman go from teaching "A, B, C, D, E, F & G" to let's figure out how to spell 'Derek' and 'Matthew'?? The sign was moving way to fast for a beginner, I mean damn woman.
Missy Marshall this is an insert from the DVD they are selling.
I agree i need someone to sign slowly so i can learn .
Gad dammit. You're right. It says in the description box that it's a "preview". It's so annoying looking for tutorial videos and finding out it's just an advertisement. kmt
I have found a new hobby: learning sign language. I think it's a great quality to have!
Interview with you dian
she asking us to write down what she is saying. yet she has not taught us the words. slow down and teach us more BASIC word please
All those complains.... I just pause whenever I find it too fast and repeat it after her. It is doable.
So fast to be level 1!!
Thanks for this, I am learning BSL and need a lot more practice watching people signing.
Far too fast for me,makes the thought of learning BSL frightening!
Why does she sign everything so quick when this is meant to be a beginner lesson...She just wants to show off her BSL skills ...
She was doing spelling at the start but she didn't show all the letters, I already know the letters but some people don't and she was doing it early fast
@mikeymana Hi, thats why it is important to look at the context of your signs...and not individual signs because the meaning of a particular sign in isolation can mean a different thing when surrounded by other signs and the context changed...look at the semantics.
i now at 25 plan on moving to the uk make a life for myself and get some closure and even though my wife-to-be never heard a sound in her life never spoke a word her hands and her written words spoke volumes BSL gave my siobahn a voice and when i see it being used i can't help but remeber and smile :)
thanks...as a fully qualified interpreter I know there are regional dialects with regards to numbers, people etc and depending on the context signed utterances change according to meaning....when learning a language it is always best to immerse yourself with users of the language you wish to learn...bearing in mind that not all deaf people sign, and there are also differences in how everyone signs....just as hearing people do not speak exactly the same, but are still communicating in English..
i just wanted to thank you for posting your BSL videos my fiancee was deaf/dumb and was from the uk now i'm USA and i'm HOH but i get by just fine for the most part when i first met her i was like not ASL?BSL? WTF lol but in the end we made it work and we had 4 amazing years together however she passed away 04
michaelsjourney87 Thankyou for sharing this. So sorry to hear your wife passed away x. Hope you are okay & all the best for your travels. ☺
@LSLSoniaHollis I had to repeat the alphabet a few times before watching this video, but I guessed right all the spelled names in one go! Thank you very much, you inspired me to learn a new language :)
@LSLSoniaHollis an example of this is i learnt 1 sighn for 'good looking' and then learnt that sometimes the same sightn can be used for 'downs dyndrome'. that can cause much confusion!
Thanks. I am meeting my deaf dad for the first time in 9 years. I had a bad head injury 9 years ago. And forgotton how to sign I know basic, Hello and how are you. But the rest I have forgotton. So i need to go through alot of stuff. Being I don't live near a college this is so helpful. to me thank you so much.
Very good thank you
You are welcome. If you wanted to learn BSL in more depth then we have some great online courses which may help. Most people start with this one learnsignlanguage.co.uk/product/bsl-level-1-bundle/ I hope this helps :)
I really love it !!! Thank you God i find here I was looking for that many times and I founded Im soo happy that I can learn Hopefully I found it so much as I can get
how am i suposed to read and observe sighning @ the same time? :/
many thanks for this video!
Can someone please tell me what the BSL hand sign is for the word 'him'? Thank you SO much if you do! Trying to write down all of my notes, and forgot to take note of that one word, so I've forgotten how to do it, lol.
Lol I like fingerspelling in BSL. I sign ASL, and even though I think that the letters are easier to learn and sign, it looks twice as cool when you spell them in BSL
I have a great friend who has a brother who is deaf, but I am going to learn more sign language for when he comes in the pub (when they get back to normal) instead of writing him notes from what people say whenever he pop's in.
Thats awesome. Good luck with it. 👍
TOO FAST for beginners. I have BSL level 1 and I am doing it again as a refresher and it's the same complaint. I have a PGCE Po/CET and it's such a basic error
It's too fast in the sense that I cannot see exactly how she uses her hands. Not that I cannot rewind.
@LSLSoniaHollis Yeah, I come from Stoke and my sister's deaf. She's lucky that she can still hear and does not require sign language but it's fun to point out that 'yellow' in Stoke sign language is the action of molten wax falling from the ear hahaha. That's weird, don't you think?
@cudgybudgie hello, thanks for the positive feedback I hope it helps people further their studies. thanks Sonia
Slow the video down to 0.5x its mu ch decent pace to understand each sign
Hi there. Thanks for the feedback. We took that feedback and subsequently refilmed a lot of our content using Deaf presenters who were also sign language teachers. If you take a look at the other videos hopefully you will be able to find the slower versions suitable for beginners.. I hope this helps. Best wishes Sonia
You are a qualified BSL interpreter but are you qualified to teach BSL? Have you been trained to teach BSL as a language? Do you think it is right for hearing people to teach BSL?
how are we supposed to understand those names when she only showed us A-G ? :/
@mikeymana Due to the fact that they can lip read as well, they can put the order of the signs with what they can understand from lip reading to gain a better understanding of the situation. It's just another tool, I suppose. haha I know it's funny when she did the names and you just read her lips. :-)
Too quick..I’d like to start with the “very” basics first eg the alphabet !
far too fast
I speak ASL, so BSL should be fun.
all those saying " too fast too fast " it takes a lot longer to learn to read the spelling at normal "deaf" speed if you constantly slow it down, rather, try just keep repeating the section, annoying but you learn it a lot faster.
@mikeymana because people who use bsl also lip read!
@Kelly50057 because a lot of deaf people can lip read. especially those who weren't born deaf...
I think I need to re-watch your basic sign language video (Learn BSL the Easy Way! by Sonia Hills)
from 2:09 to 2:13 i think i saw her spell 'detak' and then 'tatk--' im confused
I think it was Derek and Mark
I got James and shopie right ._. I don't think anyone will learn from that :/
I learnt completely different signs for the days of the week, and numbers after 5 XD....how can there be a standardized test?! Im learning BSL in Scotland, but when I go home to the south of england, it's going to be different! Does this mean if I want to take the level 1/2 exams, I'd need to do these in Scotland!?
I take it this isn't for beginners given how fast you're signing, I figured level 1 would be beginner level
Why is your (H) sign letter round when spelling Thomas's name? I was taught it was like a karate chop with one palm overlapping the other gently.
too fast !!!! too fast !!! what the BSL for TOO FAST ?!
Sonia may be a qualified BSL interpreter but this doesnt mean she is qualified to TEACH BSL.
My questions are:
Is she qualified to teach?
Is she qualified to teach BSL?
Has she attended training to learn how to teach BSL as a language?
The general consensus among the Deaf community (& many BSL interpreters agree too!) that Deaf people who are native BSL users with suitable training & qualifications are the best people to learn BSL from. Pls also remember that job opps for Deaf ppl are limited.
@Timalady whats ur point?
I missed 'Ok'
Yeah it's way too fast
My name is Tyler Jake Nichols and can u mention that in the other vid
To fast sweety ....
Is the sign for 'night' and 'dark' the same?
Yep
This is too fast
too fast
oláa, eu sou brasileiro linguas de sinal.. eu já aprendendo bristish sign language 1 bsl.alphabet.i love you, eu amo vc. trans`you, obrigado!
RUclips Bsl PSP
I feel so sorry for peoplw who can't talk or hear!
Shit.. It's hard to learn this in BSL. I'm native ASL and I've learn how to use BSL. I met a deaf lady from England. I can do abc's in BSL. It's hard to believe that we both speak English yet our sign language is completely different!
Everyone that says this is too fast needs to read the damn description ffs.
YeouHyomie shut up cretin.
I agree with everyone else, you sign far too quick for a beginner
Thank you for your feedback. This is one of the reasons why we have refilmed and brought in various deaf presenters to enhance our programme. If you look at the other videos on our channel you should be able to find ones that are slow and takes you right back to the basics. I hope this helps. ☺
I found this way to fast to understand. However I slowed down the speed to 0.75 so it was better
yep i did not rlly understand that but thx anyway
BSL level 1 exam
Im american and i do asl...how did i get here:P
This too FAST. No wonder no hearing people wants some to learn it.
Spell my name
Why does it have music from a porn movie?
Damn too fast... I missed it shit.
Unfortunately it's too fast for me and probably others to get grasp of the signs otherwise it would be a thumbs up
We have just uploaded some other videos which are a lot slower...hope this helps :)
Music is so off putting
yes too fast
it would be easier to understand if she talked
Wow
&
Your bsl accent is not good. You can barely tell how many fingers you are placing upon your palm. You should place your palm forward not to the side when doing L, M and N.
I apologize but this is way too fast. I gave up half way through. Thank you though, I am certain it is helping some people who have some basic knowledge in this already.
This is too fast for me. Teach slowly please, this enough to put people off learning
Wait this was for begginers? Sign me out then, no pun intended... Also who's idea was it to put a white woman in front of a white background? I came hear wanting to learn sign language and left with worries about my vision. GREAT!
Thanks for your feedback. Always welcome. Following previous feedback we have since refilmed our content with various Deaf presenters at a pace for complete beginners (with different backgrounds). You'll see that in this channel with newer dates of publish, along with our website www.learnsignlanguage.co.ukOnce again thank you for your feedback. Best wishes Sonia
Should Deaf people more opportunity to teach BSL, not qualified BSL interpreters (too much speaking, and lip patterns are not allowed). You should know.
This is waaay too fast. It put me off signing until I found a sign language book where I could learn sign by sign. I'm a teacher and if I went that fast teaching kids to read and write they'd all be illiterate. I think you need to go slow, build up the learners knowledge gradually with lots and lots of practise of the same signs initially, to build up the learners confidence and skills. Once you're at a basic level of signing then this would be a great video but for complete beginners its just useless.
thank you for the feedback. We have uploaded a new playlist with beginners videos at a slower pace. I hope this helps :)
too fast
