  • At first, double-amputee Oscar Pistorius was running on the Paralympic circuit using his high-tech running blades. Now that he's won an international court battle, he can run against able-bodied athletes at the London Olympic games. Mark Phillips reports.

I work harder than everyone else and improve a lot, but i have not beaten any biological leged athlete yet and i know their is no way that blades give an advantage. A good way to test this would be to look at runners times of people before they lost their legs and after. Alsoe only one amputee has made it to the olympics so far out of millions, no one has even come close. so when the scientists lose their legs and can experience running in blades then they can talk.

      @troycronin2258 8 лет назад +12

      +janet bergman no the people who conducted the study were biased and came up with this conclusion because it is unusual that amputees end there 400s quicker than they start. there is no way to test which is faster but if you want to try you can ask a wouded vet if they feel faster as an amp or before. also after further testing the legs were proven a disadvantage which is why oscar was aloud to compete. no amputee has even had qualifying times for the olympics except pistorius so for now there is no way prosthetics give any advantage.

    • @chaistan
      @chaistan 8 лет назад +15

      +janet bergman Do you really need a study for that? Those blades are essentially springs. So ofc they are energy efficient as long as they last, but they do not provide more power to a stride, actually they provide less, as there are no calves muscles to extend the foot and give more power. With amputees like Pistorius there, they have to rely on their glutes and hamstrings to get speed(generate power), where everyone else can use all of the muscles of a "normal" leg.
      How can anyone see those as superior over normal healthy legs?

    update 3/2021 : not being ageist, but my comments at 16 resurfacing 😭 anywho i see it can be a disadvantage too, i realize it all depends on how the material and manufacturing is, yet i don’t believe it is made lighter. seems like a fair race. with or without able bodied legs, it’s all in the physical prowess. you don’t just need legs to run fast.

      Having worked on DOD prosthetics in the past I can tell you that the legs he has for running aren't really giving him much of an advantage when you consider that someone like Usain Bolt's natural biology provides him with a much bigger advantage. Now if actually wished to cheat and wasn't an honest athlete he would use far more advanced ostrich-based bladed limbs that would give him a true advantage over everyone else and leave everyone else in the dust bringing him up to the level of runners like Bolt. People always complain when an athlete outperforms them despite having to deal with great adversity, haters will hate. He gains a bit of an advantage being lighter but then loses out a ton because he is unable to kick off the ground (sprinters and runners practically strike down at the ground jumping with each stride, Bolt strikes the ground with about 1000 pounds of force with each stride.) So yes, he is better than them and he did it without legs. If he wanted to give himself the same advantages of Bolt's 1000 pound strike he could simply use recoiling legs that allow him to jump with each stride like normal runners with legs but he accepts the disadvantage and trains around what he has.

    • @Helxas
      @Helxas 5 лет назад +3

      @Kub Yang No, seriously. The muscle groups of the thighs are what provide upward locomotion, while the calves and Achilles tendons are what provides forwards locomotion - If you hadn't noticed, he's missing those. The entire prosthetic in and of itself is detrimental to forwards locomotion, making it just manageable, not easy; The bending backwards of the spring just provides more upwards locomotion, not forwards. Furthermore, the blades ("feet") are entirely inarticulate, meaning that they have to meet full on with the ground, where a runner's foot doesn't have to. A fundamental aspect of sprinters is to land on the ball of your foot, a small surface area, making it easier to concentrate more force into one small point to push up and forwards, where the blade entirely eliminates the possibility of this.
      In terms of locomotion, the principle aspect of sprinting, Pistorius has many factors working against him. It's hard work and amazing adaptability that gets him to where he is.

  • @TheWoundedNinja
    @TheWoundedNinja 6 лет назад +6

    Im not a hater, i really respect these type of athletes (i run track myself) but dont you think like if you fine tune the legs they can exceed more force being imputted into them and spring harder? Michael Johnson said, "the more force being put into the ground the faster you will go." Along with the weight of the material and the work being put into it, example about the work is when you sprint you have to always land on the balls of your feet but with these you only focus on the hips and moving your thighs. Im not disrespecting im just stating out a fact that could be reasonable.

    • @Helxas
      @Helxas 5 лет назад +2

      Not necessarily. The muscles of organic legs are powerful springs in and of themselves, and the Achilles tendon provides tremendous force toward forward locomotion. On that topic, it is far more difficult to generate forward locomotion with springs that you *cannot control* rather than with springs that you can. The way the springs bend backward make the prosthetic great for *upwards* locomotion - That is, jumping - But not so for propelling yourself forwards to run. It'd be easier to generate forwards locomotion with a much smaller surface area on the blade, the analogue for the foot (Basically like landing on the ball of your foot), but that leads to issues with stability, having to balance on a very small area being difficult and all.
      Pistorius' speed comes from hard, admirable work - And all despite it being very difficult, when you cannot even feel the ground with your own body.

    I know I'm seven years late, but I think they should allow him to run, he isn't a sideshow because he has prosthetics, he has trained long and hard to get where he is now and should not be punished for having to use prosthetic legs, he didn't choose to get them, the legs are his way of life, it's how he gets around even when he's not on the running track.

    • @x_kim_lee_x2409

      Exactly clearly he has gotten very used to them by training very hard just like any other person would if having prosthetic legs made you that much faster every one who had them would be racing so obviously he has just worked just as hard

    I ran for three years in high school. 1200m, and x country. It was agonizing. Not having legs not only makes you lighter but you won't suffer from blisters, shin splints, cramps, Achilles pain and possibly even hamstring damage/pain. So how is this not an advantage? Why is he running with able bodied athletes?

Maybe his legs don't make him faster but you can definitely design ones who do. Humans are not even good at running quickly, we are only good at running at long distances.
