I think they called the 2016 release of Doom "DOOM" because its both a remake and a sequel.
Doom 3 was an actual reboot, yet they still called it Doom 3.
It was meant to be more of a "soft" reboot but Eternal confirmed that it is a continuation of the series.
I call it Doom 4 because it's less of a mouthful than "Doom 2016"

And plotwise the series hasn't been rebooted since 2001. Wolfenstein 2009 is a sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and The New Order is a sequel to 2009.
Technically, it was a reimagining, as the original Castle Wolfenstein was Metal Gear before Metal Gear.

I am so glad you mentioned Spyro the Dragon because that is the epitome of a light, kid-friendly series that went dark and gritty and was so vastly different it turned away the fans of the franchise. It's no wonder that the two developers that worked on the Legend trilogy went under. In all fairness, they were okay games and really took it in a completely different direction and made it work, but it wasn't enough. Personally, I think they would have done much better if they had said, "Hey, this isn't a reboot, this is just a character by the same name who lived at a different time within the game's world." Might have been a little more appealing.
Now that I think of it, almost every Zelda game is basically a reboot.

There's technically a time line. I'm pretty sure the early games are before hyrule existed, but I'm not sure
I think of the Zelda games as literally a legend. And like all legends, with every retelling over centuries, details change a lot. And so each game is a retelling of the same story but told in different centuries, which is why they all have common elements and settings for the most part but the specifics are different. Because it's the legend of zelda, not the breaking news of zelda
duffman18 Actually, you're supposed to play The Wind Waker before Phantom Hourglass, and there are other direct sequels, like Zelda II and the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel, so the retold legend idea doesn't really work at all.

I love that Sonic 06 was just like forgotten by everyone including the continuity. Like IIRC Silver the Hedgehog is reintroduced in a Sonic Rivals game and apparently is supposed to be the first time he meets Sonic.
I think they new it was bad because the game ends with the timeline being reversed so that the game didn't happen.

"Reimagining" and "New Take" sound just as corporate and patronizing, but with the added condescension of being an obvious attempt at re-branding.
Yeah, especially since that's the usual buzzword we hear for those reboot movies nowadays, where they remake stuff but not as good. The All-Female Ghostbusters was "A brave new take", Mulan was a "reimagining of theclassic" and so on.
USUALLY when a corporation tells you it's a New Take/Spin or a Reimagining it means it's not as good as the last one.
The better (and more honest) option would be: "Hey, we're redoing something which doesn't contribute to the actual franchise in any way and instead just patronizes new and old fans! That obviously means you'll like it more!"

It's a reboot in branding, as what people like to call "a soft-reboot". It still ties into the other games, but it's meant for both old and new fans.

I actually liked it. Not excellent by any measure but extremely enjoyable. Unremarkable but quite fun. The fact it that comes with the original trilogy in it's full glory included is the icing on the cake! Plus, it's pretty short so it makes a gracious leave before it starts getting repetitive.

@@Kingdom850 Who knows? At this point BG&E2 is pretty much a reboot. Feels like Michel Ancel treats the 1st game as a failed tech demo. It was supposed to have a lot of space exploration and multiple planets but in the end the project only included a single planet and a teeny-tiny bit of spaceflight gameplay at the very end.

I’m a huge DMC fan, and I still loved the reboot to me it was a great game.
Actually, all the Wolfenstein games other than 3D are in the same timeline as each other, New Order just had a radically different style.
