You're like the Bob Ross of Settlement defence.
Hah!
+Jonathan Franke, I could see that...
"Now remember we want our turrets to be *happy turrets*. Place them out of the reach of melee attacks and with clear and overlapping fields of fire..."
I agree on that.
Just with less hair.
@@Areanyusernamesleft
Unironically, Bob Ross served in the US Military, specifically US Air Force I think. If I recall the story correctly, he had a job that required a lot of disciplinary shouting at people. Once he retired from the Military, he never wanted to ever yell at anyone ever again. I like to think that he didn't.
@@normanmccollum6082 Yes I was aware of that part of his biography. :)
Thank you for showing how to switch MG turret types. I've never seen/discovered that before.
It’s from ARK
Wish there was a mod for pre-built towers like this. Might be nice to have a function to save a custom built tower so you can copy-paste for multiple settlements.
I would love a feature like that!
Maybe in the future we might see a SKSE added option pop up after you hold the button for grabbing settlement objects which lets you save presets, The preset using the collective resources of all attached objects.
... ... Off to nexus forums seeyalayda!
A copy and paste and save feature would be better for building.......make tower....copy.......paste in more
naw cause you can only store one thing on clipboard. with presets u can save multiple and can revisit them over and over. if you put something else on clipboard, it overwrites whatever was there before. thats pretty lame.
Sight Beyond Sight hello I come from the future too hopefully inform you that what you ask of is I'm pretty sure now a thing :p
Man, I used to watch your silly wow videos like 10 years ago with Hat the turtle, and now you make these helpful construction videos and those cool really somber lore videos for fallout 4, and you have kids! Life is like some weird crazy echo through time.
Life is fun like that!
Why did bethesda even place the spawn points close to the center of the settlement anyway? Seems dumb.
Because It's Bethesda, They like it when we scratch our heads in total disbelief. ;p
CounterNerd
Because the alternative would be to place them so far out that the Raiders would have no chance to damage your settlements since we would’ve actually built walls and defenses proper and make settlements untouchable
is there a way to get non -gaurds- to stop charging enemies?. maybe know of a mod?
That easy just find attack spawn points and put a mega ton of turrets
@@awanderer7132 Easy fix, add to the number of attackers.. Its just lazy to have spawn points inside a settlement amd it makes building walls almost pointless. Its sad how gamers like you make excuses for the devs just being lazy assess..
I have something similar in my settlement builds. When you are high enough level, most settlement attackers get at least one guy with a missile launcher. If they have decent aim, they can damage most of the turrets in a single shot since they are all clustered together. I will not be doing this again in my next playthrough - I will be spreading the turrets out.
Wire fence is your friend. Stops grenades, missiles. And spread out.
Oxhorn please show us how these turrets work against a different bunch of enemies!
Great idea for a video!
Thanks for the turret tower with the new DLC. Cursing with Curtis had a vanilla turret tower setup that I liked as well.
If you use the smallest floor size for scaffolding and just do single turrets going upward you can have turrets that dont block eachother, and you wont have to place 4 turrets, just one and the tower will have full 360 degree functionality.
Oxhorn, thank you man. I do have a Scaffolding line at the spawn points of my larger settlements, but I also now have these in the middle of those settlements. At smaller settlements like Tenpines or Greentop where spawns are at or in the settlement these are my main towers. Also, I assume someone has pointed it out but make a half moon and both poles snap.
WTF?! 1600 HOURS AND I NEVER KNEW YOU GET RANDOM MK TURRETS??!!!! Seriously, im in awe wtf beth, y u no tell me??? Damn. Now i gotta get thru all my 30 settlements to see what i got.
just r ember places like sanctuary , red rocket and aby farm will only get model 1 turrets. i learned that the hard-way lol
Anime Red I realized just after this comment that i cant actually choose mk's... they just get a higher mk the further away from Sanctuary they are. So in Sanctuary its MK 1 obviously, oberland station has MK 3, the Castle has MK 5 and warwick homestead long south has MK 7. No way for me to change wich is a bummer :(
i have been setting up missal turrets on all my settlements .
Hey Oxhorn, the support beams need an exposed corner to snap to, if you were to wait to finish making your circle, say snap together a half circle, for greatest ease, the beam would snap right to it.
Some things in Fallout are inevitable. For example, if I have a settler named Bannon (Don't Call Me Settler Mod) then he's going to be assigned to a clothing stand.
Now we have a new item to add to the list... Every settlement will be protected by an Oxhorn Defensive Platform! Marvellous.
Saitir The new, effective ODP defense system
Hey bud, I dunno if you've figured this out yet but
If you place the Ibeam, then snap one wedge of floor on, then attach another wedge, you can snap your 2nd Ibeam right into that second wedge perfect 100% of the time. The reason you can't get the second leg to snap in is because they technically attach to the edge and when you have the disc made it reads that edge as occupied.
2022 here and I had no idea those small metal platforms could snap onto those metal pillars. Thanks for the knowledge!!
I always build with the Personal Jet Pack mod on. It works in build mode and makes flying up to the top of things to do building high up so simple and easier.
I noticed that your generator is in the open. In my experience if any defense turret is wired to it, then the generator will be their first target. They blow it up and then attack everythig else. My advice is to build some walls around it, that fixes the problem.
Thank you Oxhorn. I never knew that about the different type of turrets and how to switch. I love the 360' defense
You are my man !That circle style turret setting gave me the exact idea for Castle defense.
I dried up my brain and my ass to conjure up a suitable defense and visually impressive mechanism and failed until i got rejuvenated by your mechanism.\m/
I do something similar in Red Rocket, only I use the WH half floors coming off the roof at the point. If you do half of the floor, you can then snap the beams together. I tried it just now because I wasn't sure, and what I wound up having to do was taking one of the second story beams out, placing half of the top floor, and then putting the beam back, and it worked like a charm.
Edit for clarity: The first floor wouldn't snap in with both beams in place, so I removed one of the beams, and finished the first level floor. I then added half of the top floor, snapped to the existing beam, replaced the second beam, and finished the top floor.
FYI i know there is a problem with snapping the "cheese wedge" pieces when you place both the iron posts first, but you can let the iron posts snap into one semi circle of the concrete floor wedge shapes first, then use "Small Square" floor pieces to snap in the remainder of the wedge pieces one by one, i find it quicker than eyeballing the posts
best design ever some revisions I made was using the smaller warehouse pillars and using 4 of them each level while running a wire up the middle each level having a side wire conduit on the side of the smaller warehouse pillar andd the base being 4 curved concrete walls and that''s where I put a switch to connect power to the whole thing.
I love your design.
Ok, I managed to snap the whole thing. This is what I did:
1. Place first support beam.
2. Add 2 floors forming a half moon (semicircle) snapped to the beam and each other.
3. Add remaining lower support (snaps to the second floor part), and 2 upper supports (they'll all snap)
4. Add another 2 floors on the top of the upper supports making a semicircle (they snap to the upper beams)
5. Remove the upper 2 supports (leave the upper semicircle floating) so you can finish the lower circle.
6. Add remaining lower 2 floors on the bottom level
7. Put the upper 2 supports again (they'll snap to the upper semicircle)
8. Close both semicircles with extra floors so they're complete circles.
Oxhorn mentions not wanting to connect one defense turret to another. (His spotlights independent of turrets in this case)...
Another option (my preferred option) is to is to create wiring loops in which every object is connected to at least 2 others. For example, lets look at my Sanctuary build. I like to replace the street lights with the same style (my head cannon is that we rebuilt the damaged street lights instead of creating all new lighting) I will have the lights on both sides of the street, so I will wire a string of lights together on each side, then I will occasionally connect the two chains of lights with wires crossing the streets. I will then have two rows of street lights that light up the approach from vault 111 connected to two lights along the street that have connections crossing the street. likewise I build turret walls similar to those used by oxhorn to cover his spawn points I use a different platform design, but same basic concept I will daisy chain the turrets together, but I will also have a pylon with each turret connected to it, then the end turrets in the row will be connected to my main power source for the area (preferably 2 different street lamps)
I do the same with my water production. I will daisy chain the water purifiers together, I will then connect them to 2 or more pylons or street lights that I run along the retaining wall. These streetlights will connect to the chain along the street at the sanctuary sign, at the other end, I will usually have a row of lights along the east border as there is a spawn point there (thus defensive towers to be powered), and a third power branch will run up along the playground and next to the work benches at the yellow house giving me 3 points of connection to my power grid. my generators will be housed in a custom building on that empty foundation directly next to the carport where the crafting stations are. That yellow house becomes the hub of the settler activity, so it becomes my "workshop" officially designated as being sturgis' home. (not that they ever use the beds I assign them to). Having the generators inside a structure adds a layer of protection to my electric grid, and the grid connects to the building (and it's generators) at two different points as well, so even damage to the building (and it's conduits) can not take down my power grid.
The wiring Oxhorn shows may prevent the loss of a light from taking down the rest, but it leaves the entire cluster vulnerable to damage to the platform and conduit.
Still... that said, his defense towers (both straight turret walls, and round structures such as this) are an elegant approach to turret placement. I have been using them for years.
Dude that’s awesome! I really like the spotlights :D I’ve started over and been building settlements again to use the Settlement Attacks CC mods. The infinite waves are a lot of fun to play around with.
I took your idea here & just used Heavy-Laser Turrets that way I still get a high damage, I don't have to worry about area of effect damage or anything getting destroyed within the settlement.
Heya Oxhorn, in case you didn't find in the "in between" your post and my comment, I found a way to "perfect" snatch every part of the tower structure while fiddling with your idea. Put first I beam, snap first mid quarter, snap second quarter, snatch second I beam, snap final quarter. For second level, remove one of the first level quarter floor, snap first second level I beam on the side without lower level I beam, snap one quarter up top, directly snap a second level I beam on the opposite side (right up from first level I beam), snap a second quarter floor, move the first I beam to its final position on top of second first floor I beam, finish snapping all quarter floors. I hope it will help you or others figuring it out. Thanks for your video and ideas :)
you could put a generator (for the lights) in the middle of the lower turrets to make the tower self contained. adding a siren (in the middle of the upper turrets ) activated by the lights might also be nice
True, but I worry about the generator getting knocked out by missiles and turning off all turrets.
This looks great ^.^
I feel like you made it a little more difficult than it needed to be though. Possibly I am not familiar enough with the pieces because I have not messed around the items in the warehouse section much, but do those posts not snap on top of each other like the wooden pillars from the barn section?
If they do snap, then just snap them before putting the floors down. As for the snapping point not putting the curved piece the way you want it, you could just snap a square floor piece, then snap a curved piece to that, then scrap the square one. Unless you are not wanting to use the extra materials for that.
If you want the I beams to snap you can't have them going into a compete circle.
Start with I beam 1, put on the first piece, put on the side that will have the second I beam (rather than the one that shares the I beam, and THEN clip on the second I beam).
I haven't tried it yet, but the problem you are having there is that you are covering the clipping edge by clipping it to something else first.
You might also have more luck stacking your two I beams first (they should clip on top of each other), and then adding the flooring in or putting in one, clipping on the first piece of floor, and then stacking the I beam before adding more floor - since you won't have covered all the clipping on the top of the I beam.
Thanks I will try this
I wondered how you did those towers, when I tried recreating them on my own, I couldn't figure out how you did the second tier. Thanks for this helpful little video, I'll put this new knowledge to good use.
I enjoy watching all of your videos, thank you for all your content. when I see something like this, I want to build it right away in all my settlements I just wish there was a way where you could store like blueprints to something like this and add it to your workshop under like a prefab item so you can place multiple items around your settlement faster.
Bwahaha, I drew this and posted it to r/falloutsettlements a few months ago - concrete round floors, barn posts or WH beams, and turrets. What I didn't draw was that the one I actually built is on the North side of Oberland Station. I'm not at all saying you took anything from, quite the opposite: I'm continually amused and pleased to see a shared & developing architectural language spreading through regularly-involved builders. Here's to subconscious collaboration, Cheers!
Hey it's cool we think on the same wavelength, cheers mate!
Hey Oxhorn, can you do a video over the ranges turrets can shoot at? I like to build settlements where powerful enemies spawn to loot them for either xp or their physical loot.
1st let me say that i like your design.
now though, i didn't hear you mention this so i think it is worth noting (for unsuspecting viewers) regarding function (not aesthetics)
many would assume that the turret can/will only fire in the frontal cone that it oscillates, which is false.
the turrets themselves each actually fire at a full 360 degree radius, given there is line of sight.
so with the right height and the smallest floor piece possible and you can have a single turret with 360 coverage. i find this worth noting because it can be nice when one section of a settlement doesn't require 8 turrets to cover that side of the location.
a good example is to place a turret on the top peak of angled rooftops which allows this full radius and unblocked 360 coverage.
Yeah I was gonna mention that but the only good thing with this design it makes it show that it can prioritise on different angles but yeah you don't need to use this design unless you want something abit more different
Ive been doing this before...with Vanilla Fallout 4. lol
Cool! Definitely going to try it out, even without lights it's going to be useful in some settlements.
Nice idea, Oxhorn. Smaller than my stacked foundation ones.
You should try and build a airship
there is a mod that u can have a air ship .
Learnt a ton today! Thanks @Oxhorn - seems like building is easier on pc vice console
To help with snapping try this method. Place curved concrete wall-make a half circle of concrete floor-place the 4 beams-remove concrete wall-then finish it up. Just tried it right right now and it was, well, a snap.
Thanks for that!
Did you try it? It seemed much easier to me.
snapping those i-beams drives me crazy.
Instead of completing the platforms you can snap the other beam in, then finish the platform. Also to short beam it taller than turrets so you can use them instead of 4 tall ones. Too high and the turret will lose line of sight.
I am about to start a new fallout 4 run through with a no mod run after the update on the 25th since most mods will break, do you know if the machine gun turrets will shoot each other if a mob spawns on one side of the tower so that the back turrets have a turret in between it and the mob? basically can a none area of effect turret shoot another turret and damage it if there is a turret in the way?
Wow Oxhorn you are amazing, you bring a ton of insight when building your settlements I am a very big fan,Thank You for opening my mind to help me make my settlements more realistic and incredible all credit goes to you for my turrent defense.
Thanks much! Glad I could help :)
mark 3 are (HE) High explosive. so it can still hurt your settlement. id go with m5 if you can as they are incendiary.
He mentioned that in the video. Oberland doesn't have access to Mk. 5 turrets.
Game: Quickly, The Slog needs help
General: meh, it can wait.
Once again, good stuff from Oxhorn!
This is awesome! I'm glad I found your channel, so many helpful videos!
If you don't mind repairing stuff then do missile turrets start to make sense? They should since settlers are invincible unless you shoot them yourself, right?
Thank you again for the build. By chance, Is your little jetpack deal something from a mod by chance?
Yes, it comes from the CROSS jetpack mod.
Great content thanks and it's awesome to have a gaming creator to watch who is experienced enough to say "had my druthers". 😎🧙🏼♂️
Oxhorn, you use spotlights a lot and I have a question. When you leave a settlement and then return later, do you find that your spotlights are no longer working...until you pick them up and put them back down?
Yes I do. I had to install a few mods to "patch" this issue. I have them linked in my mod document, linked in the description.
I wonder if anyone has brought it to the attention of the "unofficial fallout 4 patch" team.
Hi Oxhorn! I really really enjoy your videos and the tips and tricks have help me a lot! And I have a question. Have you ever unlock a mission named: Synth detect in x settlement? For example mine was Synth spotted in Coop Sunshine Tidings (At least I think that was the name of the mission, I'm not very sure). I'm level 32 and haven't done the teletransportation device and I already meet the Railroad before doing the molecular level. Greetings from Costa Rica! :) :)
Isn't it more "lore friendly" to use a mod that randomizes the attack spawns and make them ANYWHERE from the area instead of just putting turrets right by spawn points?
well, he is using a mod to see where they may spawn. normally you cant see the spawn points and just have to guess based on being attacked
I had a question, on the Consoled I lost access to Diamond City, and I don't use mods besides the sanctioned stuff that is made by the developers. I am wondering, if you could check to see or get some kind of feed back from your viewers to see how many people had a save screwed up when they added the Update for the Mod content onto Consoled? I have not seen or heard or had an easy time coming across the information from when it happen, as much as I searched for it. Plus the game company has done nothing to release something in the PSN Store to let us download to allow us to force correct the save files to try and corrector the issue, or things of that nature. Like players might be able to do if there is an issue in load orders like one would have or need on a PC.
Thank you Oxhorn!
I forget the game, but the defence platform looks very like an orbital platform I built to do something similar. Well, they actually did warp in, so...
It would have been nice that we were able to place wall turrets like the ones on DIMA's quest. I was hoping that they be unlocked once the quest was finished. Also, when I first bought the game and saw the defense section, I thought that after completing some quest it will be unlocked, but no, Bethesda did really failed on that one. Then when played Vault 88 was like, "ok, maybe here, since it is a Vault, it has to be protected, but again, no.
Machinegun turrets can mow down crops just fine.
I much prefer 180-270 degree bunkers using the curved Concrete walls, clamp-style turrets from a mod that add turrets of most player weapons and a mod that adds more snap-points for Concrete elements. I start by sinking one curve as far into the ground as possible in an incline so that when I then procede to Place the turret, only the weapon reaches above the Concrete wall, then add Another one or two curve walls snapping them at the same level as the first, then do the cabling and snap the last one or two curves to a higher level than the others so that I can use the elevated wall to snap a curved Concrete floor roof just above the turrets. Creating a turret bunker with a firing slit that's almost impossible for raiders to hit with grenades and the Concrete wall soaks the most of the incoming fire.
I used concrete grated floors (wires can pass through it) with a plus shape in concrete pillars on both levels........
oh you can also use those pillars from the atrium section of vault dlc they are premade and can be lowered into the ground using concrete pillar trick
I built a Six story defense tower. Nothing could stand against it. Spawn 50 behemoths and they were turned into sushi.
Use a mod that remove the attack points from inside the settlement. Really. You'll still need to build things like Oxhorns tower here, and walls. The mechanic of having enemies teleport into the heart of your settlements is complete cheese, so dont feel bad about using a mod to move them outside. Consider it a bug-fix.
The biggest problem I have in my game, is, the way settlers try to exit their fortified positions, and mindlessly charge into the enemy massed (outside). Being bots, they have no conception of man the walls, or hold choke points, or form fire from behind cover and height etc...
I just took Oberland Station, and will do this!
Do spotlights do anything other than look neat and waste electricity?
Do they improve turret aiming, or provide any real benefit?
They lock on to enemies during attacks , that might be it though.
If a spotlight sees an enemy but your settlers or other turrets don't it alerts them all to tbe enemies location and make it impossible for the enemy to hide.
+Captain Tiel *the
I believe it makes your turrets more accurate. That's just what I've heard though.
I think they help turrets hit during night raids.
how to you find where the attack spawn points where? i was at 1st hoping this would be some mod..
settlement management software
settlement management software it is a mod it gives u a holo tape that u put into a console it has the option to mark the points .
Heya Oxhorn I have my own way of making defences using the scaffolding and I think they look really cool is there any way I could show you them
This will be very helpful in fallout 76 settlement defence.
This is most most unimaginative shit I’ve ever seen
It's supposed to be simple and effective, not cool looking
Wouldn't creating a walled cube around the spawn point lock the enemies in it?
Then kill them from above.
Oberland station is quite easy to deal with as I just surrounded it with concrete floor block walls.
Sadly no, as some enemies actually teleport through walls during raids.
Do you not like the "Settlement attacks from beyond" mod? It would solve this problem.
*****
So far the concrete floor "walls"work just fine,at least at oberland station.
In fact it's my "go to" defense as it's easy to put other structures on top of them.
Oh I do make my settlements very tight enclosed spaces now,so maybe that has something to do with it.
Great vid bro! 👍🏻
Very helpful. Thanks!
Great build I have to try that. ty

I've put 36 hours into this game and have only had one settlement attacked. The turrets didn't even engage. Am I doing something wrong?
Jeez do you play with all the mods listed on your Google Doc?
The problem with that platform is you have to ~tcl to go repair the top turrets if they get damaged.
Yep better to spread them out, floor level behind wire fences. Stops melee, grenades, missiles.
how do you get them types of struts and how do you get the higher Mk turrets? i only ever have Mk I and Mk II
That is cool. Can you put like 7 of those up without slow down?
Well the more settlement resources you build, the lower your FPS will get. That said, I usually have 1 tower like this for each spawn point in a settlement (typically 3), and I have never seen performance issues because of it.
+Oxhorn ---- Beautiful. Just got home. I am going 2 make a couple of your towers right now. Thanx 4 da vid bro
He’s good at building he didn’t curse Bethesda once
Or Fatman turrets I know it's insane it's also an torrent DLC... Plasma, Fatman, and ect.
There are some beams from wasteland workshop to.
Are the spotlights necessary or just for looks?
I believe they add to the Defense. But I also bet they're for when it's night time
Where do you get Wall Mounted lights? I have Automatron and I can’t find them :0
5 months late, but you need to find a blueprint first
I want ox to test out the range of all the turrets and the stats
Like I heard the laser turrets can detect enemy’s from a good distance but I haven’t had the him chance to try it lol
Are there any mods that let you move your spawn points outward? I intend on using a border expansion mod so...
Yes, but those won't solve the issue. Enemies will still attack in the middle of your settlement.
This is gread idea I love this idea. Now I want to try this. Mainly it will help in one man station security post.
I did grey guarden different. 2x3 foundations max height. 1x3 halfway lower foundation with stairs on one side then the on the other making enemys run a path since ai won't jump. With all beds in a building at the top lined with turrets.
This is because the way the AI works is it will go after people, and things attacking it. But the ai is dumb enough not to jump. With turrets out of reach, and one door and entrance way the ai's programing forces it to go there since there is no flanking path.
Though sometimes it does try to flank a house with every inch of its roof lined with turrets...... I use heavy machine gun turrets for 2 reasons here 1st they require no power, 2nd they are cheap and I can spam alot of them. And because the enemy is forced to go down my path layed out they kill everything. Sure 3 might not stop a super mutant instantly only he's being hit by 8 at any given time not counting settlers who can though usually farm threw attacks shooting him. I actually struggle to land a hit in defences and have never lost rather i showed up or not.
i noticed waterfalls at grey garden. how? please explain mk system for turrets.
I love base building and figuring out how to build the turrets....but it really pisses me off how pointless all this work in the end is since whether your defenses fail or succeeds literally have no effect on how you build your settlement, but a simple dice roll. wth were the devs thinking?
care to reiterate?
I have spent countless hours building walls. I may go and take them all out now.
What mod did you use to re-dress your settlers in different clothing? I found lots for a female character, but not settlers, unless i miss something... Anyone?
I explain it all in this video: ruclips.net/video/wkbaW0MjIDU/видео.html
CITIZEN. RETURN TO YOUR HOMES. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY.
question about copper wires, do they count towards the settlement size?
No, just objects with meshes (that you can pickup or bump into).
***** thanks for answering! that is very helpful info. I was worried that doing the heavy laser turrets would chew up too much size compared to the heavy machine guns.
Question.
Any reason why you put the conduit on the bottom instead on the "roof"?
No, you could do it on the roof too.
Thx was just wondering :)
I like the idea of putting the power on top, eliminates wire clutter for a cleaner look.
So can I do the whole "click E to move all snapped pieces" thing on Xbox? Because that would be very helpful
Yea I think you just press on the object that is at the foundation of what your trying to move if that makes sense
@@wilsonpaul3599 I'll try that! Thank you
I'm now discovering fallout 4 lol
No thank you for making a video on this I subed
I built a couple of these, but they just feel like overkill. These days I just use the watch towers from this
www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/21358/?
Drop one, slap three or four turrets on top and all is good. This coupled with making sure all settlers at least have an assault rifle and that pretty much snuffs any attack.
If you just build one side then the snap points should still be there for the rest.
So how do you enable that free fly mode?
This is not needed. Heavy machine gun turrets turn 360°
How do you mark the attack spawn ?
