Briefly met Emi in the United States the summer after the World Cup. He's a pretty nice guy and is good with fans.

@@andrewjacques8275 Argentina's defense is not really good. They need the long possession game to defend with the ball and make up the difference in physical. And also all other teams left at this point rely more on high pressure and exploiting mistakes, so they don't really have to adjust their attack style much.
Why is Dibu Martinez criticized so much? Is it because he dances? Is because he gets bigger when that moment comes? Why when any player scores a goal he can dance and celebrate even in the opposition crowd he is not criticized??? But when Emi Martinez dance because he stoped a goal and dance, it is so wrong?? The USSF should take note from the Ecuadorians who are now looking for a new coach.
It is difficult to play on a field that seems more to plant beans than to play soccer. Argentine players, having better technical quality, need the field to be in optimal conditions and the ball to go fast and if it jumps, Enzo is coming from an operation and is with little football, Messi is playing practically injured and even so it is a pleasure to see him play. Ecuador played very well, it was a typical South American clash.

Mind you, they are yet to face any real opposition consdiering they have the easiest path to the finals and are yet to impress anyone... No bias here, I even betted on them to win yesterday in 90 mins and they couldn't close out a game vs Equador.

Enzo was unfit making all kinds of terrible passes and losing posession. De Paul is in decline as a player, and Nico Gonzalez is not starter material. Simple as that.
Ecuador learned from Uruguay a bit, press the midfield and force them to pass tha ball, eventually they will make a mistake, and then you attack.
Once the midfield is neutralized the reality is that Argentina has very little to do, since Messi is not getting the ball to make godlike plays and he doesn't wanna run for it, that is why Argentina in reality plays with 10 players on the field sometimes.
It is not that "...Messi is not getting the ball..." but that he feels the ball has to come to him. The comment that "...Argentina plays with 10 men" is accurate.

Off the field? He literally went to comfort and hugged the other goalkeeper after the game was over, when his teammates were celebrating.... 🙄
On the fourth one he went too far too, but if he'd raised his knee another two or three inches, that also would have been a save.
USMNT needs a goal keeper a crazy world class goal keeper like Martinez. David Ochoa is dual national has that crazy goal keeper personality. LAFC recently signed goalkeeper David Ochoa in 2024 as a backup.
Goycochea was an amazing penalty stopper, but Dibu is an overall great goalkeeper who is slso the best at penalty stopping

Argentina only respects Uruguay at this point. Uruguay players are tougher and meaner than the Argentinians and they know it. They also have the master tactician. And they know it too.

Aside Dibu Martinez, how is it that Argentina and Germany almost always (yeah sure there was the Chile 2016 loss but they have a smashing record in World Cup history) win their penalty shootouts and countries like England and Spain always lose them (well England has one win in recent history but that is against Spain LOL).
What happens on the field stays on the field. You are not a country with a football culture, but you must have the same situation in another sport that makes you understand. What dddibu does is normal and completely valid. In fact, that is the true essence of foubol: competition, mockery, etc.
You guys a so romanticized with Argentina you can't unbiasedly analyze a game that pretty much saw Ecuador out play Argentina.
I wasn't impressed by Argentina. Their tactics of near constant arguing and feigning fouls do not make for fun games to watch recently - seem to be making up for lack of flow and cohesion. Their saving grace is Martinez who is currently one of the greats in his position. I have been much more impressed by Columbia and Uruguay this tournament. Unless we see a fully healthy Messi, I don't see them winning it all...

Argentina was not precise and it was the weakest match they had, to give an extra piece of information, I tell you that Messi did not recover from an injury and Enzo Fernandez He had an operation a few months ago and was never the same again. Ecuador is a very tough opponent and plays well.

@@xaviergough9359 It was 100% not, without Dibu or Ener Valencia playing against Ecuador all tournament, Argentina was gone, since Ecuador had better chances and sometimes was superior to Argentina.
And Ecuador has not been good this year, even Argentinians who saw the game agree that Argentina didn't play well, against a well prepared team like Uruguay or Colombia, it would had been a total loss.

Without the beautiful long pass from the corner by Messi to Mcallester, then to Martinez, Argentina wouldn’t have scored a single goal in the nominal time. Keep in your Pendu mind that: If Messi didn’t score, he assisted! If Messi didn’t assist, he created chances!

...and let's not forget about 4 clutch goals by Messi's teammates after his miss, particularly Scaloni having the veteran Otamendi (113 caps) take the clinching 5th penalty.
He brought in Montiel specifically for penalties. Montiel even though he is a fullback, tends to be precise in shootouts.

Did these guys even watch the game? Other than the Goal, Argentina did nothing but defend the whole game. Ecuador were superior and if they had extra time, there is not a doubt in my mind Ecuador would of won it.

Argentina better in the starting minutes? Ecuador dominated and had 2 clear chances in the first 30 minutes. The starting minutes where when Ecuador was most dangerous. In the second half, Argentina didn’t even kick to the Ecuadorian goalkeeper, instead they defend it.
