  • Every now and then Aldi have DIY specials available to buy. And sometimes one of the specials is a small hobby grade bandsaw.
    I've had one for about ten months, as of the time of uploading this video, and Aldi are just about to have another batch of the bandsaws available to buy in the UK. So here's my thoughts on it.
    The bandsaw is available in-store or from their website: www.aldi.co.uk...

    Good review Andy, ticked all the boxes and answered the questions that people tend to ask. I have one of these I bought last year(Couldn't refuse it when they were clearing the last couple at £30 😁👍) I'd like to add...as you mentioned, they're essentially a rebadged sheppach...the customer service is also handled by sheppach....and I can vouch for it. It's second to none! I had a crack in a casting out of the box...emailed them with a few pics and they took possession of the problem and got it sorted with replacement parts shipped directly to me(I requested the part as it was an easy quick fix). Glad to hear you are happy with yours too. I think it's fantastic value for £80 and a capable little machine to boot.👍😁

      Thanks Huey, I've not needed to access the customer service so that's good to know.

    Spot on review Andy, it’s not the worlds greatest bandsaw but it’s only 80 quid! I like mine, and you’re right about the blades, I’m on my third now. Cheers mate.

      I would suggest investing in a better blade. Axminster have a good selection at a reasonable price. I hear that Tuffsaws is another good supplier.

      Thanks for stopping by. I wonder if the Ferrex will be the same as the Workzone. I suspect so. The Ferrex tools that I've seen look good to me. If I had the spare cash I'd certainly get some more of them.

      I've just had a look. That's the 10" one with a proper fence and a cast table. That looks loads better than the table on the Workzone one. And a decent amount of extra power. Looks good value for the cost. I'll keep an eye out for that video.

    Good stuff man. I'm always curious when I see work zone stuff at Aldi's. Got some chisels there and they are pretty nice.

    • @TalesFromTheTinkerage
      @TalesFromTheTinkerage  5 лет назад

      Some of the stuff is really good. Others not so. The style of chisels they used to do get great ratings, the newer ones, less so.

    I bought this tool recently, and was very happy with the blade. I bought a highly recommended replacement blade from Tuffsaws, and it was terrible in comparison. The stock blade worked far, far better.

      That's interesting. I know quite a few people that rave about the blades from Tuffsaws.

    I've had this machine for about a year and now the guard won't wind down. I can't see much dust on it. It's a common problem apparently. Any ideas? Ta

      @TalesFromTheTinkerage  3 года назад

      Sorry. I thought I had replied to you. I did have an issue with mine not winding up. I dismantled the whole thing, which was a little tricky but not too difficult. It has worked okay since. I did have a build up of sawdust but I don't know what else it could be. Some of the finishing on the metal isn't the best so it may be that. It's been fine ever since though.

    A great little saw. Specs and appearance change from time to time when on sale and country to country. I did change the band from 6 x 6tpi to 8 x 14tpi, it gave a cleaner cut. The motor is a little under powered, 250w in my case, so don't push it. One big complaint was the upper bearing at the back of the band was under sized, no way would it support the band, so I fitted a larger one. No big deal for me but average Joe may not know. My 2c worth.

  • @TomPetersonRefuseReuse

    If I can only buy a band saw or scroll saw, which should I buy?

    • @TalesFromTheTinkerage
      @TalesFromTheTinkerage  5 лет назад +1

      That's a good question. It depends on what you mostly want to do. If I had to choose one? I'd go for the bandsaw even though it would mean cutting the inside of some of my carvings using a fret saw/coping saw/jewellers piercing saw.

    • @TomPetersonRefuseReuse
      @TomPetersonRefuseReuse 5 лет назад +1

      @@TalesFromTheTinkerage I'm leaning towards band saw, as for what I'm going to use it for I don't even know.

    • @TalesFromTheTinkerage
      @TalesFromTheTinkerage  5 лет назад +1

      I think, given the types of things you make, that a bandsaw would be more versatile.

    Great honest review! I do have a question... if you were going to buy a better one, which one would it be?

    • @TalesFromTheTinkerage
      @TalesFromTheTinkerage  5 лет назад +2

      That is a really good question. Something from Axminster, Record Power or Jet. Cast iron table with a decent fence and maybe a mitre slot. and the largest cutting depth and throat I could afford, both space and money wise. Realistically I couldn't fit anything much bigger in the Tinkerage but there are higher quality machines of about this size.

    I wish Aldi sold stuff like this in the US. Their lawyers probably told them not to -- too dangerous.

    Excellent review Andy. I started with this machine myself and It worked like a charm. On mine the pressed steel table was dish-shaped but and not that flat. But that was easily fixed with car-body filler and a sheet of melamine. I tinkered with it to the point it cut square true and with very little blade drift and was able to cut very thin veneers. You can't beat the price. But it's not available all year around. I only replaced mine because John Clothier was selling his Aximinster saw, and it's not gone anywhere I having tucked it away and secretly don't want to see it go.

    • @TalesFromTheTinkerage
      @TalesFromTheTinkerage  5 лет назад

      Hopefully, I will upgrade at some point but yes, for the money it's good. My table is pretty flat but I'm thinking of trying to make a better table and fence for it.

      Excellent. Here's the replacement blades I bought: www.axminster.co.uk/axcaliber-bandsaw-blades-bulk-packs-ax876224 1400mm length. You can of course pick individual blades from them. I went for a bulk pack to give some variety and to make the order up to the free delivery point with some scroll saw blades.
