I practice with my light to get a feel for shining it through car windows and such. Another good technique is lighting a room by shining it on the ceiling. It’s kinda fun.
I almost didn't watch this video because of the title. I didn't realize how much I didn't know about flashlights. I think mine is rated at 1300 lumens. The candela is adjustable though. I often find myself adjusting the candela frequently on the job, (I use it for maintenance purposes). I just never had the terminology to go with it. Now I have more specific information to look for when shopping for my next light.
To use a ballistics analogy, lumens is sort of like powder volume and candela is like sectional density. Higher lumens (or more powder) means more power. Higher Candela (or sectional density) means greater penetration and range.
I’m so glad there was more lightsaber content at the end. The brief teaser during the discussion left me wanting more! …and an excellent discussion and example of lumens and candela, too. :)
However you did those video clips, that the first clear explanation of the difference I've seen or heard since the candlepower days. You've got a fallback career as a high school science teacher! One omission: almost every advertised light, or Chinese light, uses fake numbers. And a photonic barrier is my window shade. The contrast washout and glare blindness aren't really barriers of any kind, they're a different failure/limit in our visual systems.
Thanks. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to understand candelas by reading. Your examples did the trick. I’ll be a much more informed buyer for my next light.
Great explanation. Sage Dynamics has an awesome video about all the lumens where he explains both as well. I'm a flashaholic who's spent way too much money and learned way too much thanks to r/Flashlight. I sometimes carry a single output tactical light with stupidly high lumens and candela for tactical stuff and always have some kind of custom light for general use stuff. I find it's easier to have lights specialized and I don't always need the tactical light when I go out. I'm excited for the Cloud Defensive vs. Modlite comparison you have coming up. Cloud's MCH is on my shortlist for my next tactical light since Modlite has terrible customer service but their EDC head has lower candela.
r/flashlight represent!! My carry flashlight is a custom S2+ with triple XPL-HI. My "tactical" flashlight is a Surefire 6z with clicky tail switch and a single mode P60 drop in.
Ok this has to be the hottest gun advice you can get, no seriously I've recently got into firearms and absolutely love it and appreciate your wisdom! Keep up the great work, thanks!
I never knew any of this. I just turn on the light and say wow that's bright. LED has really upped the game. The old flashlights had that filament dark area in the middle of the beam.
Keep up the good work, your so channel is so cool! None of my female friends can talk about this stuff so it’s super cool when you explain things plus it’s really validating to hear it from another girl!
Haha sorry about that! I haven't made a video on it because I don't really feel like I'm all that great zeroing. It's always an obnoxious process for me lol
Very excellent explanation. I'm looking forward to next week's video. Should be fascinating. I haven't seen many good videos on defensive light use out there. So I'll definitely keep an eye out for that. Out of curiosity have you looked into body armor at all or know of channels that have? My girlfriend is petite like you and she's having a hell of a time finding a carrier. The big issue is the shoulder straps. Most don't get short enough for her torso and the armor is always to low on her body. I know you focus primarily on concealed carry. However I figured it was worth a shot and their's no harm in asking.
Body armor isn't something I've spent any time on to be honest. Although, I do know that @cbrnart on Instagram has some graphics on body armor selection for women that could possibly be helpful!
Great video to explain all the light terms. Thanks. I wonder though what you suggest for the amount of both Luma and Candela I should carry for a self defense flashlight? Thanks.
That exact question is actually addressed in next weeks video! There will be time cards, so you’ll be able to skip straight to the answer you’re looking for 😊👍🏻
I have a pretty in depth video comparing Modlites OKW and PLH-V2 heads to the Cloud MCH-HC-SO going up in about two weeks you'll probably find super interesting!
@@swarbrickjesse Haha sorry to disappoint 😂 I put a ton of work into the light comparison video, I’m confident it’ll be worth the wait 👍🏻 Thanks for your patience! It’s been a long time coming.
OMG I'm actually smarter after watching this video. How often does that happen?!? P.S. I would have liked this video, but it has exactly 420 likes and I didn't want to mess that up. 🙂
I've carried convenience knives and multitools in the past, which definitely came in handy when I had an in person job, but now that I work from home I rarely find myself needing a knife when I'm out and about. That said, I don't carry a fixed blade for self defense yet because I don't have any training with knives. Training with a fixed blade, and adding it to my EDC is a goal of mine though.
Good answer. It is a mistake to think of a knife as a self defense tool without training. In your case, you already have your hands and feet, pepper spray, and a light. If those don’t work it is probably time for the gun. I carry a small key chain light and Swiss Army knife (the model with scissors) on my keychain and they get used a lot, for finding those pesky waffle fries and opening catsup packages.
It's refreshing seeing the younger generation of the firearm community discovering what works, what doesn't, then sharing their discoveries. Carry on.
Sweet light saber moves! Thank you for covering this - it’s a topic I know absolutely nothing about. I actually understand lumens vs candela now!

'Nice to learn something I've long wondered about (but not enough to do my own research, evidently). Thanks!
I learned something today.

The lightsaber section was my favorite part of making the entire video haha!

I never looked into the difference. Now I will, the light I've been carrying around is a " I lost my french fry" light.
I never knew any of this. I just turn on the light and say wow that's bright. LED has really upped the game. The old flashlights had that filament dark area in the middle of the beam.
Finally a video I can send to people when they say they don't understand why I have so many different flashlights 🤣
A very well articulated video that explained these ideas...way easier than anything I've seen in a while. Thank you!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the excellent summary! Looking forward to the follow up nex week.
This was excellent, very easy to understand. I did not know about these 3 things. Thank you.
You learn something new everyday. Definitely helpful as I look into lights
You're videos are really becoming amazing, great break down of differences between lights and types of light.
Thanks! I've been working on making them more interesting and informative :)
Great video! You explained it so clearly. I’m excited to see the follow up video!

Sage Dynamics is the king of carry optics. That's where I started when I decided I wanted an optic.
Great video and very informative!
Typically brilliant! And when I search for a missing waffle fry, I do NOT spare the lumens!

If you really need to find a Chick-fil-A waffle fry that fell under your seat, a flashlight is the incorrect tool; get a dog instead.
Youre cute
Photonic barriers 😂😂😂😂😂 the new tactical buzz word for light barriers….. or better yet, tinted glass…. This is getting dumb….
Tinted glass isn’t a photonic barrier 👀
But I get what you mean haha
