Autism Family Trip to the United States Botanical Garden in Washington, D.C.

- Our family spent the day being tourists in Washington DC after we completed the Race For Hope 5K! We attempted to go to the Air and Space Museum, but couldn't get in. Then we decided to check out the US Botanic Garden which was a place none of us had ever been to before!
We walked through the rose garden and made our way through various exhibits in the Conservatory including the orchids, the rainforest, the mid atlantic, the desert, and more. Gabe has never been to the tropics before and I can't wait to get him on a plane to experience a different environment! The children's garden was cool too!
This is an activity that would have gone very differently in the past. I can't explain why or how Gabe has changed so drastically in terms of his ability to go with flow, keep his hands off the leaves, and experience new things effortlessly. I can remember taking him to the Botanical Gardens in NY with my sister and how difficult it was. We had moments of being happy, but mostly stressed out. I used to have to defend Gabe and myself everywhere we went when he was younger. I can't remember the last time I apologized for Gabe's behavior or trying to explain that he is autistic as if that is something to apologize for. It isn't and I learned that over time. I hope that this video can give parents a sense of hope. For us, it has gotten easier and we can appreciate the difference between the old days and now so much!

Beautiful! I teach high school students and had something happen that made me think of you guys. There was a student walking towards a classroom while standardized testing was going on (he would not have been allowed in the room). I stopped him and asked him where he was supposed to be and didn't respond. Turns out he was nonverbal which I learned very quickly!
Managed to take him where he needed to go and he was able to communicate with me through writing. It was such an eye opening experience. I never in my 30 years have had an experience with someone nonverbal before, so it's almost as though it was "meant to happen" shortly after coming across you guys a few months ago!
You're both great moms and Gabe is one awesome kiddo.

Beautiful flowers. You guys had a nice day for this walk through the gardens. Gabe gets to experience so many different things thanks to his moms.
Its Mothers Day in Australia 🦘 today. Happy Mothers Day to all mothers and especially these two great mums ❤
Happy Mom's Day! Just watched a video of Astrud Gilberto from the 60's where she hums syllables so beautifully. Maybe Gabe would enjoy her too?
gabe always has really cool outfits in your videos!! i love his style!
Happy Mothers Day, Nikki and Caroline!
A big part of why Gabe can tolerate more is because you didn't stop bringing him places. I have autism. If people didn't force me out of my comfort zone a bit, then I'd never get a chance to experience anything. You take Gabe everywhere. That's awesome! More parents should be proud of their neurodivergent kids. Keeping us at home, because they're embarrassed by our behaviors, is the worst thing you can do for an autistic person. It will make our reactions worse. Exposure therapy is the only way to grow.
Such a beautiful family ❤
Just got a recommendation for your channel & so glad I did. Though I am not autistic, I had several issues growing up, but having very supportive parents, I was able to make it in this crazy world. Gabe is very blessed to have that kind of support, it can really make a big difference in how children or anybody handle life & it’s challenges. It is sad you felt you had to defend Gabe’s behavior, people should be more compassionate & understanding.
Gabe, you go boy, you are very blessed to have people in your life that truly love you.
God Bless from Georgia 🐾🐶🐾
You all go to such beautiful places!
You folks walked so many miles that day!!! Well done! 2023 is very different for seeing and enjoying places that were so difficult before. 😊❤

Wow that’s so beautiful!
Your family is so inspirational. Gabe very clearly feels safe and loved. I know how much time and work it takes to help them feel comfortable in different settings. My family is getting ready to wrap up a week long vacation to DC. We have 5 kids, one of which is a nonverbal 12 year old with autism and intellectual disability. Just a few years ago, I would have NEVER pictured us being able to handle a trip like this. But our boy has been *amazing*. Walking miles and miles everyday, sticking close to our sides, riding the metro, touring alltheplaces (albeit quickly😅). I have been around/ worked with kids with special needs all my life. Both personally and professionally. And I am still in constant awe of their resiliency and ability to surpass our expectations so much of the time. These kids (and their siblings!) are truly rockstars. Brings me to tears when I think about it.
I just saw you all in front of the DOT in DC Navy Yard near Nat’s ballpark! I shouted hello Gabe and I know you from RUclips, but forgot to say Happy Mother’s Day!!! Enjoy the beautiful weather!
Hi!! Thank you for the intro from afar! We had a wonderful Mothers Day!!

Nice place but Gabe doesn't seem 2 be enjoying this place very much..
💨 Gabe c🤭uld care less.
Have you guys ever watched the RUclips channel FatheringAutism? It’s a father who has a nonverbal autistic daughter named Abby and vlogs Abby’s progress. It’s so fascinating to see how far she’s come and I thought of Gabe right away!
