I travel to Lake Tyrell in Victoria to capture a bucket list photo.... an epic reflection shot. using Skywatcher star adventurer, sigma 24mm lens and Sony A7s3
What a brilliant video John. Loved all the images and I know how much effort both mental and physical it must have been for you to get them. Can't wait to see where else the journey leads you mate.
It is a pleasure to the eyes that we have finally been able to see this lake under a starry sky. A nature's treasure that I will love to shoot one day.... Cheers from Spain mate!!
The B-Roll in this video is next level mate! I love the images that you captured and the final goal of getting that perfect reflection! I was honored to share this photo adventure with you and I hope we can share more like this in the future!
I add my vote to all the rave reviews you already have - fantastic (again)! You need a set of heated gloves - they work even in -10 deg and lower where I live in Norway! You'll be astonished how much warmer you feel overall👍, and can still drink a beer or whisky with them on. Can you please give advice (even a separate video?) on tripods and heads? I just had my first Milky Way pano attempts using borrowed gear and really want to try more wide-angle tracked panoramas, but couldn't find a description of what gear you use or recommend in the text, apart from camera, lens and Star tracker. I'd love to do more of this style astrophotography rather than the multi-hour DSO shots I have until now focussed on.
Thanks mate, really appreciate it 👍 I think il get some kind of gloves to live in the car for those "just in case" times. Gear for panos isn't as important as it may seem, if you give yourself a level base off the tracker with either a z bracket, ball head, 2 way head, then that's all you really need.
Sublime - looks like another world ! You’re so right it does get freezing - I often think how lucky you guys are up north ! I think it was -5 last time I was there ….yet all that gets forgotten once you glimpse what you captured ….ahhhh the photographer life 😂
Absolutely awesome video of a great trip, John. The resulting images were well worth that huge commitment - fantastic and terrifically inspirational. My first ever MW pano was done standing in water on the edge of a nearby lake - I had to break through the surface ice to stand with the water about 2 inches from the top of my wellies to get the composition I wanted. An hour and half later I couldn’t feel anything below my knees, but I was so chuffed to have finally done my first pano.
This is great John. Love how much work you put into the videography here as well. Did you consider getting a set of tripod leg ponchos? I've seen them around with wildlife photographers, but idk. Just a thought!
I was just about having panic attacks watching all the expensive camera gear perched up over the water 😮. Unreal dedication to getting the shot you envisaged though. Spectacular stuff!
Hi John, Just checked the images out on the big screen of my desktop. Those first two panoramas are killer images. At 13:02 & 13:13 just beautiful. I am however struggling to make out what the foreground object is in the second image? Any clues? 😎👌👍😍
What a great video John👍 Fantastic location and absolutely awesome Milky Way images mate😀 I’m used to the cold here in the UK, I often image at -5 or lower in the winter 🥶 Clear skies!
hello john the rubber boots look very good on you. your pictures are great I have a question about the Sony A7 S3, did I understand correctly that it is astro modified? greetings from foggy germany Roland😀
Yeah you still have a ripple in that water sadly ! I find you need the wind to get down below 11kmh for great reflections and yep I have to regularly take my tripod apart and give them a clean when I shoot at the Mullinger Swamp
You've reignited my fire to get back to Lake Tyrell.😮
Oh yes! It's such a beautiful place, I can't wait to get back there when the water drops so I can see more cool stuff
What a brilliant video John. Loved all the images and I know how much effort both mental and physical it must have been for you to get them. Can't wait to see where else the journey leads you mate.

I use hand and feet warmers in my boots and gloves in Norway, and a few layers of clothes 😂 great video and killer shots! 👌🏻
That's a great idea, I left mine at home as I wasn't expecting it to be cold.... ah well.
Thanks mate 👍
Woww you sure got your dream images, well done. It is a magical place for sure :).

Haha so true 👍 I couldn't imagine going there in winter
Yeah ….no choice for us 😂

Cheers mate, 🍻 I'm not sure I'd ever be that committed, but I'm glad ro hear it all worked out for you 👍
Just brilliant as always. I still want to try asiair with 35-50mm ignoring the plate solve with the terrain. That working would be a game change.
If you get it to work with a lens that wide definitely let me know!! Would be cool
This is great John. Love how much work you put into the videography here as well. Did you consider getting a set of tripod leg ponchos? I've seen them around with wildlife photographers, but idk. Just a thought!
Thanks mate 👍 appreciate the feedback. I've never heard of those things, but I'm going to look them up right now
Really amazing pictures! ❤
Thanks so much 🙏

😂😂😂😂 I felt that in the field! Thanks mate 👍
Just kove that you captured those dist clouds especially the corona Australis..🔥 my bucket list dream shot
Thanks mate 👍 I love seeing all the dusty goodness too

It's a stick, driftwood
Looks good on the mobile, but I have to check it out on the desktop to appreciate the image quality 👍😎
Don't look too closely 👀
What a great video John👍 Fantastic location and absolutely awesome Milky Way images mate😀 I’m used to the cold here in the UK, I often image at -5 or lower in the winter 🥶
Clear skies!
Cheers mate, I couldn't imagine being out all night in that cold! 👍
hello john
the rubber boots look very good on you.
your pictures are great
I have a question about the Sony A7 S3, did I understand correctly that it is astro modified?
greetings from foggy germany
Roland😀
Hahah thanks Roland, I'm not sure about the boots 😅
Yes the s3 is h alpha modified.
To answer your question about foreground reflections it’s possible to do stacked NPF’s using Starry Landscape Stacker
Ahh awesome 👌 thankyou
John, incredible images, a real talent, and thanks for sharing your techniques. Are you also shooting the foregorund with the modified camera?
Thanks mate 👍 I do shoot all my foregrounds with the modified camera
Wooo first comment
🤣🤣🤣
Love it there. What was the green in the panorama? I did get car lights. I a live in inner city Melbourne. I am amazed at how clear the sky is there!
Sky glow/air glow
The green and red/yellow is Airglow.
It's a very dark sky there, much different to Melbourne
Hey John, incredible photos and video! How do you record the stars like that with very low light? Camera/settings etc.
A7s3 is great in low light, iso around 102000, 1/25 shutter and f1.4, shoot in s-log to give flexibility in post production
Yeah you still have a ripple in that water sadly ! I find you need the wind to get down below 11kmh for great reflections and yep I have to regularly take my tripod apart and give them a clean when I shoot at the Mullinger Swamp
Unfortunately we can't control the conditions, but still very satisfied with what I walked away with, and I'm glad to say the tripods survived 😀
