- This week I'm doing some landscape photography and wildlife photography in Antarctica, or at least talking about it. As photography trips go it was a good'un so I talk through some of the places we visited and the photos I took.
I was on the trip with Nigel Danson, Adam Gibbs and Alyn Wallace - videos below.
Nigel's video: • Why the 100-400mm Lens...
Adam's video: • The ULTIMATE Antarctic...

It may have been a struggle, but you got some incredible photos! :D
Cheers Mads! Looking forward to seeing what you get… 😃
Is the same expedition with Adam Gibbs?
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Really great James! I still want to get a print of the red hut.
@Cesar Augusto Margato indeed it was 😊
@@JamesPopsysPhoto OUCH!
Beautiful shots James. Never thought Antarctica would be so epic. Makes me want to put it on my bucket list.
Love the photos :)
Did you ever touch on using polarisers in Antarctica?
James Popsys: “I use the rule of odds, you know, 1, 3, 5…”.
Also James Popsys: “Here’s a shot with 8 penguins…” 😂 Classic!
.... and one with 42 penguins in.

I was quite perplexed with your panoramas, how do you do it when the subject is moving?
Exceptional photos James, breathtaking scenery. I live above the arctic circle, so I'm eager to see the snow melt. We've had snow here since the end of September, but your photos are beautiful and peaceful.
You're so lucky to be able to travel to places like this, and immerse yourself in their beauty, doing something you love. The red shed and penguins is sublime!
There is no luck. All you need is smart hard work and money.
Hey James, awesome video!
I really love your lamps in the background. Perticularly the cold one that lights up sime pictures. Would you mind to share what lamp that is? I would love such a lamp to highlight my prints.
Great video, amazing photos. As usual! Did you also get some footage from err, actually "workshopping"? I imagine that would make a cool video as well.
Very nice collection of images along with your accompanying story.
Wonderful vid, James - love it to bits. Jaw-dropping scenery, and some epic shots.
What you describe at 13:37 ... this is so me. I live in switzerland so even when you arent in the mountain area, given the right humidity - the mountains give a mind blowingly beautifull backdrop, but as always.... every time nearly... i feel like its a huge struggle to capture a image that comes in anyway close to giving that feeling of awe i had. Meh, i probably just suck... but i really struggle with this.... im not in a shock frozen state, i do take pictures but it just feels like shots in the dark :S
Great video, great photos. Great Work!! Looked like such an epic trip!
Hi James, epic stuff. Well done!
Absolutely phenomenal images, James. Thanks for sharing 👍🙂
Amazing photos, James!
That pano is incredible! How good did they stitch together automatically? How much did you need to tweak the stitching? I can’t wrap my head around how it could stitch with the waves changing constantly.
Great storytelling bud. Happy to have found you 👊
UH-MAZING! Love this, James! Definitely interested in a photo workshop. Your images are phenomenal, and really enjoy behind-the-scenes with your thoughts in the ups and downs trying to achieve these images. Always excited for all of your adventures.

Fair to say this was pretty epic 😉
That was sick! Definitely on my bucket list! I'll bet Adam Gibbs was really disappointed there weren't any trees! 😁
Hi James. Just stumbled on your channel. Wow, beautiful work in every way. Stunning photography and insights on the art. Inspiring!
James: Deception island was a whaling station because it provided shelter from the wind
Deception Island: [wind intensifies]
I GUESS THE ISLAND WAS...DECEIVING
Also the name should be changed to "Decepticon Island"
You got some nice shots from the trip.. Cuverville Island is getting shittier and shittier, lucky you didn't get rainy conditions. Neko is nice, with lots of calvings. Lemaire is in the league above everything else. Shavew Vernadsky base is closed for a visit. Ukranian crew is still there (as of mid Jan 2023). There was not too much ice this time around.
Loved your photos. We visited many of the same places back in 2008. Just an incredible place. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
What an incredible video, man 🙂 Great job. Thanks for sharing your trip and photos!
Another absolutely amazing video James!! Just wanted to ask if you could straighten that photo on the wall behind you though, as it is setting my OCD off. HA HA HA!!
Simply epic stuff James, loved all the shots & the clips were stunning👌
Hi James, I'm going South in May and I'll be taking a few primes with me, no zooms. I have a difficult question: what focal lenght can be versatile down South?
Awesome, James! I don't regret purchasing my 150-600, so I don't think that you will be either.
Very cool trip! So beautiful amazing photos! Thank you for video and story! Have a more adventure and photos!
Nice images, definitely on my bucket list. I discovered MPB about five years ago and I have not bought any new equipment since. Only had one semi-bad experience, in that I needed a piece of equipment by a certain date and it didn’t make it in time due to delayed shipping. Other then that I love them. Much better then KEH. With MPB you see exactly what you are buying, not some stock photo from the manufacturer.
What an absolutely amazing video. Thank you for that, James. I hope someday to be able to get on one of your workshops.
One tiny thing that bugged me: Second top picture on the right behind you isn't straight. I don't know why I'm bugged by these completely irrelevant things. Sorry.
Hi James! First of all thank you for the video, and secondly for opening my eyes for MPB. I hadn't heard about them before watching your previous video that was sponsored by them (i believe it was shooting 135 in iceland?). I sent them my A7 II and they replied with an email saying they deemed the condition of the camera to be better than what i'd entered so i got more money than originally quoted. They really didn't have to do that since i already accepted the quote for 60 eur less.
Top company to partner up with!
Cheers
Really? Nobody is going to say anything about the out-of-line frame in the back? RLLY PEOPLE?
Love it James, very jealous! Bit disappointed with the sixth seal on the ice flow, remembering your 'odd number rule' but obviouly no rifle to hand?
Martyn
Did you have any difficulty finding a lone tree to photograph?
Some of the scenery looks like my 2015 trip to Svalbard.
Just spotted the crooked frame...just wanted to let you know. Just that... although I knew that you know. 🙌🏻😂
WoW, just WOW❗️❗️❗️
Stunning James, what an experience that must have been for you all.?
11:00 I suspect that the 50mm FL feels most natural because we tend to look at photographs from a distance from which they occupy about the same FOV as a 50mm captures. Also, I believe that actually, and paradoxically, we tend to lean closer in to more telephoto shots and step back a bit in front of wider angle images, and this makes them feel, of course, less realistic but somehow more manageable psychologically.
Nice Black Bay on the wrist!
I just came back from Ushuaia last month and throughout my trip I'm constantly anxious about not being able to capture the beauty of the Patagonian mountains. I was with a group of non-photography friends and was constantly dragging them down when I'm trying to scout a perfect setup.
It's easy to look at your photos and along with your POVs and think wow you captured your photo just like that? But I bet there were 10 shots taken for each good photos and it's just a lot of work.
Hi James,
Your penguin shot at 9:50 breaks your rule of odds 🙂
At 9:58 - did you notice the beaver face at the top of the mountain?
Anyway - great images and video, as usual. Thanks!
Beautiful pics! You are doing well to afford an Antarctica cruise! God bless…. Keep up the good work! You are very talented!
It's amazing, that this video has completely changed my perspective of photography
I'd love to go there (with photo and climbing gear) if I could do so in a semi-green manner (I really don't want to spend weeks or months on a sailing vessel with the attendant risks in those waters), so thanks for sharing so we can experience it vicariously. BtW, I see six seals in the shot at 10:36--five or seven would've made no difference. I've never been an advocate of any mathematically-based (or most other) "rules" as they can lead to staid compositions. Unfortunately, the climate change-driven looming "end of the world" (at least for humans and many other species) is all too evident in places like Antarctica...
Some fantastic shots ! some experience for you all !! MPB is a great company to deal with even from Ireland fairplay for them getting onboard (pun intended) ;)
Love the photos. I particularly like the pano shot you did with the water in the foreground. If you need a video topic I'd love to learn how you combine frames in a pano where part of the subject is moving (in this case the waves). Did you have to manually blend the shots or is there another technique? Thanks. Really enjoy the channel.
Where is Peter the first island in relationship to where you are? I watched a video years ago of Amateur Radio Operators running a DX-perdition (operating ham radio from a remote location). While there in the middle of summer a storm hit. Temperature readings hit 75 below with 75 mph winds.
As that last photo came up, I audibly said that is fucking delicious 🤌🤌 Incredible images James!
What a stunning place. And I’d argue that it’s not just a trip for a trips sake. It shows us, and reminds us how beautiful and fragile our home is. Anytime we go anywhere there’s some carbon footprint issue, and sometimes it’s worth it. Just my two cents.
What an amazing experience mate, thanks fore sharing...cracking photos as usual. Definitely a place I'd like to visit.
Hi James,
Wonderful video and I just wish I had enough money to go on a photography adventure to Antarctica !
Where did you get the camera desk lamp from that is behind you on your right ?
Maybe you should share your goals when you process your photos. I like your personality and discussions a lot, but I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish when you drain all the contrast out of the images. Frequently I get excited about the beauty of a place from your B roll and then you show an image with little life left in it. Not a bladk shadow anywhere. I don't get it. I realize there are limitations with youtube which might explain the vast swatchs of white with no detail. Does it look good on your monitor, but not on the internet? Or is this a personal style you like?
Been looking forward to this one!
Super quick practical question…. How did you go with the vaccine passport getting into Santiago? Did you go through the online system and get prior approval or did you just turn up with your vaccine details at customs and get through? The system seems to be messy and we were told by the authorities in chile that we could just turn up at the airport….. 🧐
Thanks so much. Exactly what I needed in these troubling times.
8 pingouins:p😅 . Love your videos , best thing to watch if you want to unwind and enjoy photography
You got some amazing shots! I have the Sony 200-600 and use it for baseball and bird photography. It is a great lens.
James, could you maybe go in detail with how you booked the trip, if you used an agency, and what costs were associated with it? It’s a trip I’d love to make someday.
Liked your pictures. The climate is threateningly barren and cold but your pictures make it interesting.
Not very active if buildings are there a hundred years later 🥴 was hard to pay attention, one of your frames is wonky 🤓 I was about to type "incredible" when you said it
Stunning images from a truly amazing place! Makes you appreciate the world we live in more! Love the image with the penguins in front of the red hut and the lonely penguin on the iceberg! 📸🙂
James, you might not see this but I was wondering what your gear care looks like in extreme conditions such as Antártica?
Could you tell us how many shots made up your "Epic panorama" and what the camera settings were? Thanks!
What a trip! Thanks for sharing!
Now I've gotta wait a whole year for Vol.4 and the fur seal and penguin shots! Pre-orders open 😉?
Amazing opportunity. Crazy to think that these days we can shoot off over there to do little photography trips. Gone are the days when it was a location for seasoned explorers, often with tragic outcomes.
Antarctica, the last continent I need to step foot on to say I've done them all. Might have to get saving for any future workshops there may be.
I don't get how some people have the means/ money to travel and photograph such remote places ... I can barely make time for some photos on my local montains 🙁 ... god damn it
We lost so many post offices here where I live. Most be even more remote than Antarctica.
Great images and experience
As much as I would like to do a trip like this, I would be spending most of the time throwing up over the side of the boat. I better stick to land. Great photos….thanks.
That was fantastic. I really envy you. I guess you know you were on the same trip together with Nigel Danson, who also have a video here (ruclips.net/video/olgLHySWpsc/видео.html) about it. It was interesting to see how two great photographers interpret the same scene.
I know there's MUCH more than it seems at the surface but I dream of going to Antarctica, at least once in my life
Dear James - It's very difficult to hear what you are telling when a picture on the wall is not straight ;o)
Phenomenal stuff from the ends of the earth. Thanks james for sharing your art and skill! 🙌🏽
Every photo is a masterpiece! What is your shutter speed when shooting on a moving ship or zodiac?
Antarctica is my 1 bucket list location. I do hope I can afford to go one day, epic doesn’t even do it. 🥂
I ha have to say, i used MPB to sell all my gear after seeing them in a prior vid of yours, and it was a top notch transaction.
I'm often blown away and inspired by your photos, but these are my favourite that you have ever taken. I now have a desperate need to head to "the end of the world"!
Some of the best images I've seen from those that went there. no dis to anyone else. but I think those that usually use tripods would have struggled a bit.
You should get one step ahead of Danson and publish these in a bigger book than your usual...you could call it Ice land
If i would have seen that photo of the hut without your name under it,i would have said, that that would be a photo you would take ;) -also..where are the sheep?
James, fabulous set of images. Curious though how u shot the pano on the moving ship
wonderful video, great photos and a wonky picture frame. 😉
13:05 how you just held the body with that 200-600mm lens attached, using only one hand is truly impressive
That shot at 9:50 could fairly easily pass for infrared. Kind of wonder what it would look like in IR for real.
Must have been with Nigel. I thought the orca shot shows just how epic the mountains are. Great images
Rule of odds works for planting tulips too. ..in case you ever find yourself needing to do so….
I spent 13 months at the South Pole. It was really cool….for about 3 months.
Beautiful photos man. Dont listen to youre wife, frame that huge iceberg photo, its youre work and you have all reason to be proud of it !
Great photos! (Rule of odds for garden planting, too.)- Elaine
Just stunning James. Thanks for sharing, I hope your knee is feeling better and you’re getting rest!
Wow amazing photos .A friend of ours just left to go there for a 10 day trip
I loved all your photos, I hope to be able to participate when they return to my country
WOW!! Antarctica is definitely on my bucket list after this video. Great shots James! 🔥🔥
Hey mate did you have any drams gear wise with the temps and conditions ? battery time shorter or anything or no dramas?
First video I've seen of yours - I really enjoyed it! Loved that panoramic photo
Definitely a place to go and see before the Walmart opens in 2050.
