- In this video I ditch the tripod for some handheld landscape and wildlife photography in the most incredible location; Antarctica. Armed with a Nikon DSLR setup, I experience heavy winds, moving boats and waddling Gentoos on a once in a lifetime photographic experience!
*All drone footage in this video was filmed by and belongs to Lisa LaPointe, Photo Coach and Drone License Holder for Polar Latitudes. Many thanks to the Polar Latitudes team for an absolutely amazing voyage!

"I realized I didn't have to box myself into one type of photography. Here I didn't have to be a landscape photographer - I could just be a photographer." Amen, sister! Is that a philosophy you'll take back with you when you return home? You're landscapes are stunning, and it'd be great to see you lend that talent and that eye to new ideas.
Absolutely! I hadn't realised I was boxing myself in a little, so I'm looking forward to moving forwards with a fresh mentality. Thanks Thomas!
I didn't have to be a landscape photographer - I could just be a photographer. I'm so glad you made that statement. I really don't have a desire to specialize my hobby. I just want to take pictures. I take pictures of family and friends, graffiti on the sides of train boxcars, bridges, birds, my cats, clouds, stars, the moon, Christmas lights... etc... etc... etc... and I love all of it.
This was an absolutely gorgeous video, from the wildlife, to the scenery and the colours in the icebergs. The photos are extraordinary too. What an incredible experience that must have been. Cannot wait to see the next video
Thank you, that's very kind! It most definitely was an incredible experience and reliving it while editing is fantastic too!
Wow. Tripod based landscape photographer tries Antarctica and nails it!
Wow wow wow miss Victoria what a trip
The freedom!!! I loved how you transitioned within one video! Lovely footage and stills 👌...
... your face at the end tho 😅😅😅
I consider myself an amateur art photographer. I'm an Australian living in Central Oregon U.S.A. There is a lot beautiful local landscape that I photograph but I can never capture the beauty that I see. Just about all rejects. You live in a so so location and shoot in miserable conditions (cold and rain) but come away with beautiful Images. Love to see what you could do in world class, warm, scenic locations. You have the eye to find beautiful images that others miss.. I watch all your videos in the hope that some of your skill rubs off on me. Looking forward to seeing all your Antarctic videos. (Another cold location) If non of your skills rub off you have made me buy some orange hiking boots..
There's potential everywhere for beautiful images, sometimes it takes longer to find than another location but they are there! Warmer climates could be interesting, I suppose I am used to colder locations! I would love to visit both Australia and Oregon. The Oregon coast looks very impressive!
a great video, PS a suggestion for the awkwardness in gear management, one thing, you could use a monopod, siriui make some which have a ball head on the base, with three extending feet, if, your pants have pockets (like a mechanics screwdriver pocket) you could put this foot into the pocket, and use the monopod as a brace, or guy to support the camera, like a shooting stock support, also this allows you to hold the camera during a lens change. ( or you could put a sock onto the monopod feet, folded up, and put it inside your goloshes, this would at least obey the ground rule, as the monopod stays inside your boots!
Splendid video and really lovely images. 🙂 It was a pleasure meeting you there and I can’t wait for the next video from Antarctica.
Thank you Marvin! It was a pleasure meeting you too and it's amazing to see everyone starting to share their images from the trip.
Great video Courtney! Looks cold!!!!!!!!
Great one! Congratulations 😊
Nice adventure! I love the shot with the penguin dancing and the ship slightly blurred in the background surrounded by ice... that one shot really tells the story, doesn't it? ᨒ
It does haha! I can't decide if it's dancing or running away from the ship. 'I'm not ready to go home yet!'
What an adventure! Great video
Looks so beautiful there, can't wait for the next video !
Hi Courtney, what a fantastic trip. It’s also good that you now have those two wonderful cameras and lenses which are perfect for the trip. The landscape is beautiful and you captured wonderful shots. Thanks for taking the time to capture your excursion for us to see. I enjoyed the video, and I look forward to part 2.
Another classic, by a very classy photographer.
I really enjoy your videos and noticed the L-bracket you use. It was a challenge to locate one . But as soon as it comes back in stock I will have one. The idea of a universal one is incredible.
Regardless of where, travel photography is a tough beat. But, look what you have done.... Just wonderful...
Hi Courtney: This was a wonderful video. Thanks for creating and sharing. Keep well. . . Keith
Wow what a fantastic video! Your photos are awesome!!! Hahahaha I could never go there because I live in sunny Florida were it's almost always summer!!!! Lol I am allergic to COLD🥶 !!!! I can't wait to see more of your adventures on the ice!!!!! You are so amazing!👍👍👍⛱️
Many thanks for this first Antarctica video. Love the wildlife pictures! Are you sure you haven't photographed wildlife before? But the pictures I love the most are the moody iceberg images. They almost seem like abstracts. Looking forward to your next video from the far south.
I have limited wildlife experience haha, so I was very pleased to capture the images I did on this trip! The icebergs were so interesting, so many different shapes and textures! Thanks Frank!
Oh, you lucky girl. Would love to be able to go to the Antarctic to photograph the wildlife and landscape. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
I hope you get the chance to go one day!
Been there done that, but that was in the days of film! life before Digital. Great video thanks.
Superb video everything you could want and great images. Looking forward to the next one.😀
That getting down to eye level is such an important part of animal portraiture, that I just recently got myself a right angle viewfinder doohickey. A flippy foldy screen would be just as useful, but ancient cameras like mine require ancient technology like mirrors. =D My knees will love me, at least. As will the washing machine.
WOW. You and the views are so beautiful.
Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. Looking forward to the next video!
You captured some absolutely stunning images Courtney. Very well done! Thanks so much for sharing your Antarctica adventure!!
I missed your gorgeous dance on this Video! XD
Great Work!
Great Landscape and Video
Fantastic experience...beautiful images what an amazing place ....thanks for sharing your trip with us ...
Really excellent video and the ‘still’ photos are outstanding! Have a wonderful trip and many, many thanks!
I've been looking forward to your Antarctic trip videos and am not disappointed. Spectacular scenery and photographs. No little dance though ;-)
Haha I was definitely dancing down the corridors of the ship when the weather was rougher, it just wasn't caught on camera ha!
Very nice first experience here! Bravo!
Found this video quite peaceful to watch. Nice narrative, calm comments and fantastic scenery and footage.
Looks cold, but what a great experience and some great pictures 👍
Great work, you looked colder than a cold thing from coldville!
Simply beautiful
Beautiful photos. Great Journey!
Courtney, it was great meeting you in Antarctica, it certainly pushed at the boundaries of my photography skills and style. Looking forward to your next video
well this was pretty awesome, great stills great video and awesome narrative, looking forward to the next one thanks for sharing.
Cool! Cool! Very cool! And where is the crazy dance against the backdrop of penguins?
grande...posti bellissimi...non preoccuparti del tripod o dei video...sta riuscendo tutto benissimo. Complimenti, ciao Rob.
I've been so looking forward to this. Great video as ever. Thank you so much. One question though, has the ship got a disco, dancefloor????
No, but I think Polar Latitudes should definitely have one installed haha!
Really nice video, liked it a lot! Also I really like photos as well. Nicely done! 😊🙏
Wow, amazing and very informative video. Thanks for sharing it. Really enjoyed watching it 👍
Looks like you are thoroughly enjoying your trip. Particularly that last little bit of your video. 🥶
Haha! The wind could be quite strong out on deck!
Thanks for the memories! Your adaptability really paid off.
Amazing adventure! Fun to see you working out of normal comfort zone! I loved your images. Thanks for taking me along!
These are probably my favourite of the shots of yours 've seen.
Lovely stuff.
I've been waiting with some anticipation for the first video of your trip, and I wasn't disappointed, I loved the seal pics and the different colours of the ice. The penguins were cute. I can't wait for your next video
Love the sunset shot at 5:30! Looks like it was a great adventure - you're so very lucky.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL COURTNEY !!!! Will watch again , surely.. Keep them coming
WOW absolutely amazing
Wow, that is just amazing!
Wonderfully done video, thanks for sharing your journey. Stay safe.
Fantastic video Courtney! I don't think I could get sick of watching penguins. I mean they are just too damn cute!! I look forward to watching your next video and seeing more photos! 🐧📸
Great video Courtney.
I was really jealous of your trip.
The scenery and wild looked fantastic.
You captured some really nice image's as usual.
Look forward to seeing your next video.
So cool to relive it through your videos!
I'd give anything to be zooming around on a zodiac right now ha!
@@CourtneyVictoria Absolutly the same! Sitting back in my cubicle is not doing it for me!
So cool. I love your attitude!
What an amazing experience for you. Forget the sea-sickness, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Absolutely! I got my sea legs eventually though!
I guess "dancing" with the penguins was out of the question? Bill
Great video! I didn’t think it was possible for you to smile more than you usually do but I shouldn’t be surprised! What a trip!
The one you call "Ice Field" is a great example of wildlife within the landscape.
Thanks Courtney for sharing your experience with some great results.... very exciting & interesting location with so many subjects to photograph... always enjoy your work.. cheers from Australia 😀❤️
Thank you for sharing!! Such beautiful video and photos:). Love those penguins and the blue tones in the ice💕
I was longing for this! Thank you so much for sharing your adventure ❤️
Spray and get sprayed was more like the Zodiac rides I experienced down there.
I always enjoy your videos, but this one is especially delightful. So fun to watch you outside of your usual environment!
Am soo greatful you share this with us. Wonderful places.
3:15 Wow. Love it Courtney
Fascinating video you created here. It must have been a delight to photograph the wildlife and icebergs during your travels. Take the time to enjoy your adventures in Antarctica, because this might be a once in a life experience.
Hi vic, I love it..., its amazing land
Amazing video Courtney and what a location. Can't wait for next episode 📷
I'm so happy you got to have this experience! You got some amazing images and video so far and completely deserve this trip! I've been watching your videos for a few months now and you have helped inspire me to start a RUclips channel similar to yours! Just need to buy a few more things to get started. I'm very excited and I can't wait to start my journey and possibly make content like yours someday!
Cool video enjoyed it a lot. Looks like you had a great time
Haven’t seen ur video for days, I forgot to subscribe last time.😂
Anyway, nice work!
Thank you Courtney, great video being out of your normal comfort zone, thanks for sharing, look forward to the next video.
What an experience. One of my absolute favorite animal is the penguins Lucky you! Beautiful scenery.
They've definitely become my favourite animal since! They were wonderful to watch and photograph.
Awesome, what an adventure! Great video, I look forward to part 2.
looks like you had a whale of a time, can't wait to see more videos, keep them coming 👍
Fantastic video! There was one point where I could, almost, smell the penguins. I was going to say I was disappointed you didn’t dance off screen at 0:30 after the “very sexy life jacket” comment but your video and stills really tell your story!
It's an interesting smell haha! I was worried it would linger in my camera bag...
Fantastic video Courtney! Really wonderful to see Antarctica in it`s glory with some incredible captures!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely brilliant vlog Courtney! Being handheld is so freeing, opening up a world of new photographic viewpoints ❄️❄️❄️
Lovely stuff as usual Courtney, and so glad to see that you didn't drop a camera in the drink this time. Hope you get a bit more used to the climate in Antarctica as you looked so cold bless you. Keep yourself wrapped up as warm as possible Courtney and stay safe...👍
I'm proud to say all camera gear made it back in one piece haha! The D850 did get quite wet on a few zodiac cruises from the sea spray but the weather sealing did its job.
Fabulous video Courtney! I'm so sorry to hear you got sea sick on the way over - it has to be one of the most truly miserable experiences. But great to see you out there enjoying such an amazing experience! So many wonderful images - fantastic wildlife but I love those photos of the mountains! And you also got some great shots of the icebergs too. Looking forward to part 2!
Ohhhh I'm 6 days late!! Awesome to see this video Courtney. Great storytelling and humour as always. Seal-Real! got me good. I hear you with the new inspiration too. This trip in-particular tested new skills filming heldheld with a telephoto from a bouncing zodiac with a new camera 😂
Beautiful
IT must have been a wonderful experience and a photographic challenge indeed! You maged to get some fantastic images for your portfolio. Looking forward to episode #2
I'm working in the Falklands at the moment. Summer coming to an end but lots.if penguins here too of course plus remainder of the marine animals before they leave.these shores for winter. If your cruise ship docks here, would love to say Hi. Enjoy every video. Thank you.
Looks like you are having quite an interesting adventure. Excellent video and photos, as always.
Glad you made it. I actually thought about telling you to take some boat rides before going and get the motion thing out of the way😊. Be safe keep publishing.
Thanks for sharing the impressions from Antartica. Love your pictures and videos with the penguins. You‘re definitely doing an excellent job in these new photography areas. Looking forward to the next video
