Oh man! If I had just found the perspective you were at when that big wave crashed! It would have been better than what I got :D - Beautiful close-ups as always man, I never doubted you'd manage to capture something magical! I especially love the last breaking wave photo!
That breaking wave shot was amazing... Loved this (and to think you nearly didn't manage to get it out!). Great message in there too... It was bloody windy though wasn't it!
All 4 of you are winners in this challenge !!! It is incredible to see how each one of you viewed the locations and captured such a variety of different super photos. Congratulations and thanks so much.
So "bad" light, strong wind, time pressure and world class "competition" produced these stunning photos? Massive respect to you and to all the gang !!!
ahh, Dude, you were far too hard on yourself while in the field. Even tho it was a frantic challenge your video still made me feel at peace and the shots... oh boy the shots😍 😍
Michael, you have given us a truly wonderful experience, an unfolding drama of the sea. Image upon image powerful and glorious. You do think under pressure.
You fellas are all winners. But, Michael, I really like your #12 image with water spilling over the tall, vertical rock formation. It has depth and energy. And i can imagine the scene in an adventure film.
Your last dramatic wave, turquoise and golden rainbow is magnificent, however, your winner and overall winner is the bird shot. Well done. Can't you imagine the bird is out there just for he fun of it, enjoying the drama and majestic beauty too.
Great to see how four different people approached the same topic four completely different ways. I especially liked the more abstract images that you and Mads took.
My wife and I enjoyed the challenge and think each of you came up with wonderful images under tough conditions. We thank each of you for taking us along. Here are our votes: Best images, Darren. Runner-up, Michael. Best video. Nigel. Best Comic Relief, Mads.
My favorite photo is the last one, the wave with turquoise color and the touch of orange. Outstanding! The other ones are beautiful, too, but that wave photo is spectacular. Thank you for sharing!
The light in that wave image reminds me of the eye. When you have light coming in and through, how it lights up the iris. That is just an amazing shot.
Hi Michael, great to see you in Ireland, adapting to the conditions. Wow, the composition of that last photo of the big wave with the turquoise and orange was really special. I tend to travel light with a 24-105 and 70-200 on a Canon 6D, and cannot justify getting a longer telephoto, but you and your colleagues have demonstrated just how powerful such a focal length can be.
Judging from everybody else’s stuff so far yours is the most creative photographs I’ve seen yet course that’s your style you’re very creative thoughtful Photographer with the good work I like your stuff and style
This was really fun - you guys should do more like this. After watching all 4 of the videos I have to judge the challenge like this 1 = Mads 2 = Darren 3 = Michael 4 = Nigel although it was really close all round. The human interest and compression Mads added was the most unique and so it really stood out for me.
The crashing wave @12:25 was superb Michael 👌 so much texture and colour. The power of the ocean never ceases to amaze 🌊 Have watched the other guys vlogs and you all did a great job. Nice to see all you guys together, photographers that inspire me 👍
At about 1.07 - 1.10 as you began your walk I saw a beautiful landscape Two mountain peaks and town snuggled in at the bottom. Very peaceful and I thought how nice. But you all took photos of the sea. Interesting. Mind you, you all took fabulous photos of the sea. No losers here, all winners. Great work, great fun.
Absolutely love the Upside-down Waves. Not that I can compare in skill, but I tend to rotate abstract scenes around to get ultra unique shots, as well, and was happy to see that one work so well. First time viewer/subscriber. Also (don't tell my longtime favorites Nigel and Mads I said this) 3 of your pictures won 1st for me. @10:44, the bird and the wave with the turquoise.
As always, thanks! It took me a while to (kinda) learn how to ignore my sense of urgency. BTW the spray blowing off the tops of the wave crests is called "spindrift".
Wow the power of the water. When you moved to the second spot the images awesome. The turquoise colored wave was my favorite along with the rainbow water pics.
Lol. Every paid job I do, I'm doubting myself the entire time in the field. Then I get home and load everything into Lightroom and remember that I actually do know what I'm doing. And no disrespect to anyone else there (all super talented photographers, obviously), but you rocked this challenge.
Michael, after viewing all of the videos I am sure that you shot the most compelling photos of the challenge. I completely resonate with battling the mental challenges present when in the creative space. It can feel so debilitating in the moment and can even distort your perception of your own work long after the moment has passed. I have surprised myself by coming back to photos I shot months ago, that I had initially written off as lacking any solid potential, only to discover that there was indeed potential after all. I just needed time away from the experience of that day of photography to see more clearly without the mental challenges I was perpetrating on myself. I so appreciate that you go to those places in your videos where you address these issues and share them with your viewers. Great job!
You’re way too hard on yourself! Honestly the ones towards the middle and end are my favorites. My initial images I don’t normally like. I find when you’re against the clock the first images are just to get you into the flow. Most of my compositions don’t feel thought through until maybe 15-20 minutes in where I’m getting more ideas based on the landscape, the conditions, and my focal ranges. I’m just stoked for the Shainblum content!
Incredible work under time pressure- really enjoyed the sea stack photos - my favorite is the segull flying over the super powerful wave washing over the whole stack.
All are beautiful but I like the one with the bird just a bit more as well as the breaking circular wave with the tiny bit of orange, you do not need to put doubt yourself! Such strong images! thanks for the nice video!
That was the same concept I was trying to share with you earlier. Taking 4 High level photographers and sending them to less than scenic locales like Oakland, Bakersfield, Walla Walla, Spokane etc. You're onto something because I will watch all 4 RUclips videos and I've never heard of this Darren fellow yet.
The photos of waves crashing over the sea stack (all of them) to me conveyed the power more than the others. Like mentioned before, seeing the four of you together was a treat!
They were all great videos with amazing shots considering the conditions. But I would have to say when it comes to intimate landscapes you are king. Well done Michael.
🥇🏆 After watching all four videos back-to-back my Winning Pic is: Your Breaking wave with Orange. Followed by Mads first shot with him in it. And 3rd your shot with the bird. Very nicely done. 🌟✌️
Michael, you created some very interesting images. Your eye and experience were up to the challenge. Thanks for accepting it. I follow Mads and Nigel. Like everyone’s work. 👍🏿🙏🏿
I enjoyed the challenge. It is still possible to make great fotos in difficult circumstances. I find your foto of the wave with the bird the most powerfull.
Fantastic collection of images Michael...for me the one with the bird is my favourite...it lets us see the power of the ocean and how wildlife cope in it .
Hi Michael Ioved watching this challenge, all 4 of you got great shots. I've watched all 4 vlogs and my winner is your breaking wave shot at 12.25. The stand out shot of a great set. All the best Russ
Wow - stunning photos Michael, can't wait to see what the others got! That shot at 12:38 is fantastic, but I also love how you got the rainbows off the wave spray - - that was brilliant!
Oh those are spectacular! Hard to pick a favourite but the rainbows in the spray are pretty high up there, along with the portrait one of the waves crashing over the pinnacles, but it's probably the last one of the breaking wave that edges out the others. Wonderful photos!
Wow, Michael. I've been subbed to Mads and Nigel for years now and I would say that they are my two favorite photographers in the world. I watched all 3 of the others' videos in this "challenge" before watching this one. I know that you may not have made it within the time limit, but WOW the photos you got from that high point at the end are hands-down the best of anyone's! Very inspiring and definitely worthy of a sub!
Excellent video! One of my favorites I’ve seen from you! Your work is always awesome but today you talked about many things I personally related to! You captured some great images. The biggest circular wave was my favorite! Thanks for taking me along!
That challenge was a lot of fun to watch! I would love to see a follow up video where the four of you discuss some of your pictures together (like Nigel's video where he let you critique some of his photographs?). Would be cool to hear your insights about each other's results and approaches.
Hi Michael fantastic video and some beautiful photos my favourite so far is the one you shot with the turquoise wave haven't seen Mads or Nigels video yet. Glad you had a great time in Ireland
The shot with the bird in it definitely did it for me - the bird (I think it was a gannet?) gives a different perspective (sorry, couldn't think of a different word!) to the waves and rocks 🙂
Incredible shots Michael. I loved all of them, especially the abstract blues of the ocean, but the pic of the big waves hitting the rock formations with the bird flying above really captures the action and imagination.
ngl, it was almost funny how relatable some of your moments of stress were you took some really goood shots as always! my favorite was the one of the wave with the little bit of orange, it just looked like it was perfectly placed in there to balance the blue
Fabulous video Michael 👍 thank you for including all settings used on your images.....that surely helps me when I'm out shooting. My favourites are the bird and colourful wave with the touch of yellow.......so much power captured wonderfully 👏
Well that was fun! Maybe a new thing for RUclips videos. I suspect my favorites will change with the day and mood but it was great seeing what 4 great photographers would do under less than ideal conditions in some respects. Of course the wind while less than ideal to shoot in, contributed so much to your shots.
I was shocked that you didn't hang your monster backpack, from your tripod in the wind! A ball and socket ? Flat platform! Shorter tripods more stable! I use an old aluminum tripod, built for 4x5 or larger! The images were wonderful.. Seemed grainy or noisy?Bravo!
was a great challenge to watch Michael and all 4 of you produced some fantastic images. I really loved the final image of the wave with the turquoise and orange and liked the abstract upside down image too
I find it a very interesting challenge to restrict to that hard conditions. Sometimes the restrictions is what create interesting opportunities, I believe I heard David Fincher sayig it about his approach at shooting movies.
I love the last shot in the video with the turquoise block. In my opinion the best shot of all those taken in the challenge. I might just set up this sort of challenge for myself just for fun, is that the right word 😂😂
All your shots are stunning but your last one , the turquoise wave , took my breath away. All four of you took beautiful images but my personal favourite is your last one,
Stunning wave character in those images. The ones with the rainbow and colour popping through, wow. Great set of images. You can definitley be proud of what you captured under pressure.
Hello Michael, it's so interesting to see what great photographers you all are and so different pictures you took on the same place ! I really loved the crash wave picture from Mads but your wave and rock series is just amazing ! And for the end "The picture of the challenge for me" is the crashing wave @12:25 so powerfull ... and the colors !!! Amazing ! Thanks a lot fot this moment to you all ! I spent a really good moment watching all of your 4 videos ! Have a nice day !
Oh man! If I had just found the perspective you were at when that big wave crashed! It would have been better than what I got :D - Beautiful close-ups as always man, I never doubted you'd manage to capture something magical! I especially love the last breaking wave photo!
Thanks so much Mads, i really appreciate it! I loved your idea, I knew when I saw the back of the viewfinder that it would be a stunning shot!
I haven't seen the other videos yet but I'm gonna place my money that yours won!
The one with the bird was definitely my favorite...but I may be biased. Also, that last big wave shot incredible.
That breaking wave shot was amazing... Loved this (and to think you nearly didn't manage to get it out!). Great message in there too... It was bloody windy though wasn't it!
Haha yeah, self-doubt is a real pain. So glad to have been a part of this, though. Thanks so much Nigel and great work on your photos/video!
All 4 of you are winners in this challenge !!! It is incredible to see how each one of you viewed the locations and captured such a variety of different super photos. Congratulations and thanks so much.
Thanks so much, agreed, it was really cool to see everyone’s takes!
I agree COMPLETELY.
So cool to see you four together. Most of my photography heroes in one pack!
It was a ton of fun hanging out with everyone!
They all have really good vibes and seem like fun people to be around!
Darren’s video sent me to you and wow what an enjoyable experience ! I really liked all of your shots ! Did you hang out with him ?
So "bad" light, strong wind, time pressure and world class "competition" produced these stunning photos? Massive respect to you and to all the gang !!!
Michael, Hands down your the winner of this challenge!
ahh, Dude, you were far too hard on yourself while in the field. Even tho it was a frantic challenge your video still made me feel at peace and the shots... oh boy the shots😍 😍
Thanks so much Darren, haha it was so hectic, but definitely a fun experience!
Mads is the first, Michael is the second, Nigel and Darren are the third. Well, we won - the audience. Thank you guys so much! Fantastic video!

Great to see how four different people approached the same topic four completely different ways. I especially liked the more abstract images that you and Mads took.
The 1st image in this video is "absolutely" the best of the bunch! It's very well done with the patterns, Michael! Love it!
I’m all in on the turquoise wave at the end. Beautiful.
The light in that wave image reminds me of the eye. When you have light coming in and through, how it lights up the iris. That is just an amazing shot.
Love your work. That last wave shot is my favourite, tough challenge
Very tough, really glad you enjoyed the wave photo. Thanks Laurel!

When the legends come together 😎😎😎👍
That last one with the turquoise and orange did it for me. Magnificent!
all images of this series…. but the main favourite is the one with the little yelllow in it…… Super nice!
That one with the bird was special…really enjoyed that one a lot!
As always, thanks! It took me a while to (kinda) learn how to ignore my sense of urgency. BTW the spray blowing off the tops of the wave crests is called "spindrift".

Epic stuff man!!!
The last wave shot is my favourite, that aquamarine glow! 😍
Thanks so much!
The wave at 12:25 is phenomenal !!!
Michael, after viewing all of the videos I am sure that you shot the most compelling photos of the challenge. some of the best videos, for all of you, are the colabs.... incredible shots
All wonderful, but i especially loved that final turquoise wave! The shot with the bird was a close second. You won the challenge in my eyes!
The wave at 12:24 is so powerful, majestic, and beautiful. Literally gave me goosebumps. Incredible shots
I loved your shots of the rock pinnacles. For me you were the winner
The wave at 12:30, awesome shot under very difficult conditions.

And 3rd your shot with the bird.
Very nicely done. 🌟✌️
What great photos. The tourquoise wave was phenomenal!!
Stunning shot! In particular those powerful waves against the big rock! Thanks for sharing.
Michael, the pictures of the waves on the rocks are awesome but that wave shot! wow! amazing!
Well this last photo of the breaking wave is simply great, so powerful and beautiful colors.
👌The breaking Wave with the orange in it was outstanding.
I would consider buying a print of that for sure. 🌟
Ok, I saw all the Photo of the context, but for me yours are the best... An for me the amazing one is the Photo with the bird over the waves..
Michael, you created some very interesting images. Your eye and experience were up to the challenge. Thanks for accepting it. I follow Mads and Nigel. Like everyone’s work. 👍🏿🙏🏿
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much!
Michael, you never disappoint! These photos had my jaw dropping throughout! What a boost of inspiration. Thanks!!
So many good shots within an hour! Well done! Great challenge indeed - and I’m sure the time limit actually enabled all these beautiful photos.
Thanks a ton!
I enjoyed the challenge. It is still possible to make great fotos in difficult circumstances. I find your foto of the wave with the bird the most powerfull.
that last wave shot is epic

Wow - stunning photos Michael, can't wait to see what the others got! That shot at 12:38 is fantastic, but I also love how you got the rainbows off the wave spray - - that was brilliant!
Oh my, the full wave with the turquoise is very special. Really enjoyed watching your mind set change during the challenge.
You won the challenge with the photo of the bird hands down. Great video and images!
Favorite image - the last one. Reminds me of wild horses!
Oh those are spectacular! Hard to pick a favourite but the rainbows in the spray are pretty high up there, along with the portrait one of the waves crashing over the pinnacles, but it's probably the last one of the breaking wave that edges out the others. Wonderful photos!

Love the photos. I say you are the winner overall. Favourites are 11 and 12.
What a thoroughly enjoyable collection of videos. 👍🏻

Wow stunning shots! you’ve captured the power of nature beautifully. Well done 👍
Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it!
I watched all four and I think your bird shot with the sea-stack almost covered by a wave, wins by quite a margin.
Yep. that whole thing here resonated.
Haha thanks!
Fabulous video Michael 👍 thank you for including all settings used on your images.....that surely helps me when I'm out shooting. My favourites are the bird and colourful wave with the touch of yellow.......so much power captured wonderfully 👏

Beautiful shots. Fierce wind makes it so much harder! I love the epic wave and the sea stack with the gull but all the photos are beautiful.
The wind was relentless! Haha thanks so much Garry
Terrific photos, but I’ve got to go with Mads’ standing in front of the wave shot as best and your curling wave second.
I love the last shot in the video with the turquoise block. In my opinion the best shot of all those taken in the challenge.
I might just set up this sort of challenge for myself just for fun, is that the right word 😂😂
Enjoyed the video. Coming from the East Coast of Scotland I know about wind 😂 the spray coming back off the top of the waves is called 'Spindrift'
As always, very cool stuff here Michael.
All your shots are stunning but your last one , the turquoise wave , took my breath away. All four of you took beautiful images but my personal favourite is your last one,
Thank you so much! :)
Stunning wave character in those images. The ones with the rainbow and colour popping through, wow. Great set of images. You can definitley be proud of what you captured under pressure.
Thank you so much Denise, I really appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed the images! :)

Masterful images
