Finally a review on this camera from someone closer to the ACTUAL target market for the A7C. Funny thing is most of the reviews on this camera is from the perspective of people (professionals) that aren’t the target for this camera. No…no they aren’t more qualified to tell me about this camera because they own 14 Leicas. They all complain about the same things - it doesn’t 2 SD card slots, it doesn’t have multiple function buttons, it doesn’t have a joystick, it doesn’t have a fatter grip for extended shooting sessions. no one ACTUALLY buying this camera cares about ANY of that. I wanna here from the guy that’s just getting into cameras. Thank you for making this video. End rant.
I'm not sure I could appreciate this review of my review more... I'm attempting to be an honest-novice hoping to connect with others like myself. I don't know much about cameras, but I think I know enough... which is probably far less than some. I'm just hoping more people don't get scared off by a camera like this by "professionals" speaking over our heads with gripes that don't matter to most of us... I believe more people should step out of their comfort zone and try to their hand at photography or videography because it's far less daunting to learn and tinker with than most advertise it to be. When I posted this video to a A7C Facebook group, a bunch of people tried to shame me out of saying this is good camera for beginners...and all I could do is to reiterate that I was a beginner and it was great for me, and I can only presume, I'm not alone... But they were so afraid that my inexperience would somehow demean or lessen their experience, which is obviously absurd. It made me realize that most professionals treasure their years of experience as an identity... and feel threatened by newcomers. I think that's why camera people tend to be so snobby and opiniated. I just want more people to create and feel liberated to do so, not less! Ok, now rant over on my end! Thanks again!! Your feedback and input really helps more than you know!

Love my A7C. It’s got the chops for night photography, fast enough to catch my little ones and the dog, light enough to take around all day - just awesome.
You summed it up perfectly! It's such a well rounded tool that does a little of everything really well...and can literally fit in your pocket (if you wear 90s cargo shorts)!

I'm so happy this helped you make a decision... because it's a really difficult one, that $800 difference in price can get you a good lens or just money saved. The a74 is amazing and a better camera but for me at least, not that much better...or better than I needed. Thanks again!!
@@BrianCatalano I have to ask you about that rig. Did that investment make a big difference when it came to stabilization for cinematic shots? I'm sure for run and gun vlog type videos, it doesn't really matter and you probably just use the gyro feature to stabilize the footage. I heard the a7c being notorious for shaky/jittery footage but i haven't done much research into it and i guess it also depends on the lens. Anyhow, the a7c seems like a great first camera to do some semi-professional work.
@@carlobambi9035 , the rig helps, keep some of the jitters down but I would say the smallrig cage, 3212 helps the most... It makes it feel, with a better grip, like a "proper" camera weight and handling wise. Id say get that first, it's like $60, and if you want to add weight later, you can... I don't ever use gyro stabilization out of laziness, but everybody swears by it...and it's free. But I think with a little practice holding it's particular weight, you'll adjust to it if you want semi smooth handheld shots. It's hasn't bothered me

It sounds like you need a zoom, like a 24-70 f2.8... that's probably what I would recommend (or cheaper options, 28-70 or 28-75 with Sony, Sigma, Tamron). Do you have the kit lens?
@Brian Catalano I bought the A7C and I am a big fan of it. My question is, should I sell my A7C and use that money towards the A7IV or should I spend the extra time to save for the A7IV while keeping my A7C and using it as a "b" cam? I guess my question is how important is a "b" camera? I do a equal mix of photography and videography(short films) and want to do it professionally. Thanks!
That's a great and difficult question... I was in a similar boat, trying to save up to buy a FX3 so I could make my A7C my b-cam... because I too believe that for professional work having that 10bit color is necessary (I'm not sure if I just convinced myself that was true to satisfy my need to keep upgrading) but since the fx3 is so expensive and hard to get, I considered the a74. However, I realized I did need a second cam, so what I actually did was buy a zv1 as my b cam, and use my A7C as my a cam for now... I also think the zv-e10 would have been a good choice too. That all being said, as a hybrid camera, you're not going to get better cam than the a74, so if you can save up for it, you won't regret it. But how long do you think that will take? How long can you wait to have a second cam? And is the a74 that big of an upgrade, I don't know? Sorry if that didn't help answer your question ...
@@BrianCatalano thanks for replying! I guess my question is that do you think it's important to have two cameras(an a cam and a B cam)? It would probably take me about 6 months to save up for the A7IV without selling the A7C(just an estimate). If I sold the A7C for the price I bought it for, then it'd probably only take 2-4 months to save for the camera. If it were up to you, would you rather spend a bit longer saving to have an a cam and a B cam or would you rather spend less time saving by trading in your cameras to only have one camera(in my case I would be selling my A7C and putting that towards the A7IV)? Sorry if the question is confusing.
@@itsallgone5077 no, not confusing... I guess I just don't know what you use your camera for, professionally speaking? In what ways would a second camera be necessary for work whereas what problems would having an a74 over an a7c solve? If you're filming interview packages for a client, or need extra coverage to shoot products or to shoot your own camera then a second cam is essential! If you're shooting weddings then having a second cam or an upgrade would be best? Or if you're shooting narrative short films then you only need one camera and you might as well upgrade to the best you can afford. I love having a second cam, even if it is just the zvi (one can fit in my pocket and the a7c stays rigged out). If I could afford or find the fx3, I'd definitely love to have a third... It's tricky to understand what your needs are (and mine sometimes). I know the better the camera, the better the computer you need too. So I'm actually going to upgrade my computer first...
Sir, this is a great review, love your style and editing. I’ve been between the A7C and some others and this has really helped me make my choice. Spoiler alert: it’s the A7C!
I really miss the small pop up flash that I really used on my Nikon Dslr. I am not a pro photographer to carry a flashgun. a FF 2k€ camera is for beginners?
I agree with you there, obviously a pop up flash would be fantastic... I do think the A7C being more geared for hybrid shooters and really vloggers in a way, makes them flash less practical for Sony. However, almost all mirrorless cameras from Sony and the like, no longer have a flash...and I'm curious as to why, too! I think price is a very relative issue. What is in budget for one person is not for another...so it's hard to generalize anything for anybody, but I'm looking at return on investment, for that price you get a full frame sensor and a fair amount of megapixels, so it is a prosumer valued product that will hold it's value for awhile. Depending on what you do, say real estate photography or videos, you could get an amazing camera that will last you years that will pay for itself with only a few jobs. Im a beginner, and it's been the best camera for me, so I can only assume that may be the case for others. Thank you for your comment!!
Do you know if it is possible to use the exposure compensation in video mode to control the auto ISO? E.g. If I want to shoot in S-log (I know the limitations of the 8 bit, but still keen on it), is it possible to keep the camera at +1 or +1.6ev? Many other brands default to a +0ev when using auto ISO in video, and the exposure comp dial is disabled. This happens even for log recording which isn't great since we all know log needs overexposing.
That's a fantastic question and honestly beyond my understanding of this camera. The crazy thing is, I also have the fx3 which I actually find easier to use with auto iso and then toggling to or locking exposure in slog3 but it still seems overly complicated. With the a7c I only shoot in hlg3 just out of laziness now and haven't tried any other picture profiles but maybe I should... Sorry, I'm not able to help you... I really dream of a day, five years in the future, when everything is simplified while still giving us complete control if we need... Best of luck and let me know if you figure this puzzle out!
Thanks for sharing. I was kind of lost in between a7c and fx3. a7c is compact and easy to take around but at the same time I like fx3 because I never know I might wanna make short film. It’s kind of pricy too.
Thank you! And I completely get you about wanting an FX3 to make a short film, seems like it's closest to being "pro-grade" if that's even a thing, but every time I consider going in debt and picking one up, they are nowhere to be found...and then I think I probably need to upgrade my computer first if I'm going to try and cut together that codec to take advantage of it's capabilities...and it all snowballs. But I really think with the right lighting, lenses, and art direction, you could easily make a short film on the a7c that, unless you told them, could be indistinguishable to what the fx3s sensor can do. However, there's a case to be made that the a74 is a better overall camera and $1500 cheaper....so that's always an option, too!
@@BrianCatalano yes you are right. With right lens, lighting and direction would work with a7c. I already own couple of Sony lenses. Currently I use a7sii but I find it heavy with the GM lens. Am looking into going for a7c after watching your review about a7c. Thank you.
@@bLEACHeye yeah, you're definitely right. For vlogging and really anything it's a better (and newer tech) camera without question. Hope you love it as much as I do
@@bLEACHeye , would love to see what you do with a camera (adding your own shots or whatever you come up with) because your content and editing are amazing! Easy sub... Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
That's a really great (and difficult) question! At first glance, I'd probably say get the a74 body only and then get like a cheap Rokinon/Samyang prime... But then I'd think for $200 that kit lens (28-70) is an amazing value! Then I'd think how amazing the a7c is and how perfect the 20 1.8 g lense is, and then I get confused! I guess the question is, do you take a lot of video, if so the a74 is a lot better... But then do you vlog or have a need for anything wider than 28mm? That kit lens is cheap and versatile but as soon as you get a better lense you'll probably not use it very often. If you are mostly a photographer, the difference between the 24mp and 33mp will be negligible, but the evf on a74 is way better. Sorry if I confused even more, but it's tough to know what your needs are, and I think maybe you're less likely to regret getting the a74... And just save up for the g lens down the road, the next gear to fixate on for the future! Hope that helped at all!
@@BrianCatalano wow thank you for such a detailed response. So, I actually have the A7C but i have the optino to swap to an A74 still, I want it for photo and video/short film, so 4k 60 would be nice, but I also considered sticking with the A7C and putting extra money toward lens, either the g lens or the Sony Vario-Tessar 16-35mm. I think youre right though I will regret not just getting the a74 for now. A7C is really nice too.
@@swshr863 you're welcome... It was one of those riddle like questions where there doesn't seem to be a great answer (but also a good problem to have) but with what you added to your needs, and I was you, I get the a74 with the 20mm g lens because for me personally I like the separation that f1.8 gives. The 16-35 is a quality zoom from my understanding but that range I don't find as useful, unless you were doing real estate photography. I also use crop mode on my 20mm a lot and nobody knows because of the downsampling...so it's like having a 20 and a 35. On the a74 you have even more pixels to work with. I do think everyone's needs are very unique to them personally, so no camera will be perfect for everybody...but that's what I would do if I was you!

Great video dude!!!!
Thank you so much... I really appreciate that!!
Catalyst browse on the A7C interests me. I used it on a ZV1 very useful.
I keep meaning to try it out but always forget... Thanks for the reminder! It's definitely a great feature from what I hear!
Thanks! Great video!
Thank you so much, hope it helped you decide which camera to get or validate the choice you already made!
Love the intro!!! Great review
Thank you...it was fun to do, and I love this camera!!
Thank you.
@@TeeNorbu I really appreciate it, and excited for you!! Hope you love it as much as I do...it's hard to beat how capable and compact it is!
Subscribed. ❤️ new a7c owner here
Brilliant, thank you! I love my A7C so much, and I hope you will as well! One of the best purchases I have ever made!
Great video! Loved it really
Thank you so much; I really do appreciate the love!! Do you have, or thinking of, picking up the Sony A7C?
@@BrianCatalano Yes I'm almost a 100 I'll be picking up the A7C. Thought about A7iii but for "vlogging" it sounded like a worser version of A7C
@@bLEACHeye yeah, you're definitely right. For vlogging and really anything it's a better (and newer tech) camera without question. Hope you love it as much as I do
@@BrianCatalano Yea really excited to try it, experiment, and see if it makes me start creating more content aswell
@@bLEACHeye , would love to see what you do with a camera (adding your own shots or whatever you come up with) because your content and editing are amazing! Easy sub... Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
A7C + G Lens, or A7IV with kit lens??
Excellent video - love all the B-roll and the graphics and the a7c info is the best - I own a7c and love it! Plus I have a RUclips channel with about the same # of subs - Keep up the good work! you got another sub from me!!!!
Thank you so much!! You were an easy follow back... Looking forward to seeing you grow too!! Thanks again!!
FX3 IS APPROVED!!!
I know, I'm excited. I feel more legitimate with my fx3 now...even though Netflix isn't knocking my door down asking to film anything for them..
@@BrianCatalano HAHAHAHH!!!!!!THEY NOT GONNA COME TO YOU, YOU HAVE TO KNOCK ON THEIR DOOR,. OR THEY MIGHT SEE YOUR WORK AND SCOOP YOU UP!!!!
@@bkhiphopnews4030 100% truth! Ha ha... I'm not even confident enough in my work to even knock on CW's door... One day, right?
@@BrianCatalano YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES EVEN WHEN YOU DONT BELIEVE, ITS ALL IN THE MIND!!!
@@bkhiphopnews4030 I appreciate it and again, you're right. It's all about that mindset...been trying to work on that!
Cool video man 👍 liked and sub. Do you have a skin on your zv-1 and c? They look cool.
Thank you!! And yes, I've covered both my A7C and ZV-1 in a "stealth gray" alphagard skin to appear like they are from the fx3 line. I actually made two videos where I put the skin on. I highly recommend them...just for minor scratch resistance but major visual improvement! Thanks again!!
Bravo
Thank you!!!
How did people not subscribe for your channel?
Ha ha... I'm not sure, but I appreciate it, more than you know, that you did!! Thank you!
