    Daz has the right of it. Rations are not good civilian side, I'd never order them, but lemme tell you they hit the spot when you're in the field or in country. They can be eaten hot or cold, and they're normally eaten cold if you don't have much time and you can crack open the crackers or bread to munch on while you're walking. You really only heat them up if you're in a pretty safe position and you know you'll have some time to get a hot meal in. I'd much rather have a hot MRE (even the disgusting ones like the veggie ones) than a cold-cut sandwich when I was out doing my Infantry thing, and I fucking love cold-cut sandwiches.

Second tour as a Platoon Commander for a Combined Action Platoon (CAP) 0369. We didn't have MRE's at that time, we were eating C-rations (Combat rations) left over from the Korean War! In late 1966 they were experimenting with something called "Long Rats", or Long Range Patrol rations which where heated in a bag as opposed to tin cans like C-rats.. That may have become MRE's at some point

    You guys really made consuming an MRE way more complicated than it should. As a matter of fact, the heater is usually cast aside and you just eat it.
    MREs and other rations are meant to keep you nurished and alive. They aren't meant to be gormet. To understand this, one has to be humble and appreciative of getting nourishment in uncomfortable situations like those one finds in the field during exercises and deployments. It's when you have very little in the way of comfort.

      "They're good for what they are" is the PERFECT way to describe them!!!
      First, they are designed to be compact - so you can carry many of them without adding much bulk or weight to your gear.
      Second, they are designed to be very high in calories, protein, carbs and fat. So, while they may not look like a huge meal....your body will be re-fueled and satisfied....but your eyes (and your mind) may not.
      Third, they are designed to taste good....not great....not terrible....but just good. I've eaten many of them - they were all good.

  • @TheBongReyes

    Let’s be real, Aiden. MREs are for soldiers. They don’t have fine dining in the middle of a desert, forests of northwestern Europe, etc. Plenty of soldiers fight whatever war they’re fighting right now will be happy with whatever meal they can get.
    There isn’t Uber Eats or Deliveroo in a war zone.

  • @kennwashi4093
    @kennwashi4093 27 дней назад

    As with some have said here, they can be eaten hot or cold. In most cases, uncooked MREs are eaten when the platoon is securing an area and a few soldiers fall back to eat, this is the quickest way to fuel one's self and fall back into position to allow others to eat. Heating MREs is typically done where the perimeter is not under too much threat. Some members will stay on alert but the majority of the squad can rest a little longer and cook their meals.
    In the field, soldiers have what is called a mess kit, or camp kit for non-military personnel. This kit is typically stainless steel and comes with a hot plate to cook with and eat from, flatware, a drinking cup, and a battery or gas-powered stove. This kit is great if you find yourself without rations and are fortunate enough to catch/cook something crawling around you.

    He's just young, hasn't experienced real hunger, after hiking 20 miles a day, day after day, this would be the best thing you ever ate. You also would need about 3600 Calories per day just to survive. While being out for weeks, you can't just bring anything you want, these are designed to stay good for extended periods, without too much weight to carry.

    A mre meal is usually 1200 calories. But when you are on a 20 mile hike and lose 10,000 calories while carrying 150 pounds of gear the food is to replace lost calories.

    I think most are pretty good. It's calories and vitamins. Remember. It's a field ration. A real soldier doesn't give fuck they're exhausted just want the belly full. If we don't have em. We eat worms crickets and grubs. In training you get to eat what is in the rabbits stomach. Basically rabbits vomit. The MRE is awesome.

  • @kennwashi4093
    @kennwashi4093 27 дней назад

    Beef Goulash and Chicken & Noodles were my favorite MREs to eat back in the '90s. If memory serves, the chewing gum tablets were more for aiding in digestion, to help the soldiers stay regular. MREs are typically dry foods - which is why they have a long shelf life - that could cause constipation.
    During wartime, a soldier can be in the field for months to a year at a time and rations may be hard to come by depending on the situation. Back in my day, soldiers were given 7 MREs once a week, that's 1 MRE/day, because that's all you could carry in the rucksack. Depending on the circumstances soldiers may get 1 or 2 hot meals a day. Sometimes, they may not see a hot meal for a week and they'll need to stretch the MREs for as long as they can meaning, some may go two or more days without eating. When this happens, trust me, those MREs will taste better than your mother's home cooking.

    The best part of these is trading things you don't want for things you do want with other people. When you've been out all day, are so tired you could sleep standing and are so hungry, you could eat a rock, the meals improve in quality. To be fair, there are many parts of the packaged meals that people don't likeat all - that's why trading is so big.

    The food is already cooked. A lot of guys would ignore the heating bag and just
    eat it cold. When I was in the Army I rarely would eat the entire MRE and just pick out the few snacks that are good. We only got MREs while training and one meal out of the day. The other meals out in the field were hot and from the dining facilities. Once deployed you eat real good in the dining facility. In Iraq our MREs collected dust in the supply room. Our D-fac served hot meals breakfast, lunch, dinner, and midnight dinner.

    Firstly, In my experience nobody “loved” main meals but there was universal appreciation, taste wise, for most sides. People trading each other their favorite sides.
    Secondly, the civilians try MRE’s videos there’s always people that go “oh that not bad/that’s pretty good!” But after a month or so on deployment or out in the field they get really boring, and dreadful. Of course you appreciate being able to eat, but you just fantasize about food that doesn’t come outta a pouch😂
