    I saw one where a controller from NY got into an argument with a Chinese pilot. I laughed til I cried.😂

      The first controller was Kennedy Jack. He's an absolute riot. No time for bs, he's seen and heard it all. He gets really bitchy. 😂
      The clip where ATC was asking about a child's voice and possibly a visitor in the cockpit, that is a hard NO since 9/11. Pilot could lose his job for that as it's a major security breach.
      Guys, check out clips from Kennedy Steve. He's famous for his wit and was an amazing ATC, now retired. He had an extremely close call when an Areongal (sp?) nearly landed on the wrong runway on top of another jet. How these guys keep their cool is beyond me.

    The one where the pilot says “oh no”, what had happened was his intention was to make an announcement through the plane’s PA system to the passengers and accidentally made the announcement over the radio to air traffic control and all the other planes in the area. This does happen from time to time and generally all the other pilots will poke fun at the pilot who makes that kind of mistake because most pilots have at one time or another made that mistake.
    Also if you find these types of videos interesting, there’s a really cool youtube channel that I follow called “74 Gear” by the pilot of a 747 who does all kinds of aviation content. He does technical analysis of Hollywood movies, he explains what’s going on in videos like the one you reacted to in this one, etc… It’s a very fun and informative channel. I’d love to see you all react to some of his content as well.

    I read an old transcript where an American pilot was getting into argument with a tower in Germany, and the tower asked him if he had been there before. The pilot said twice, in 1945, and it wasn't a friendly visit. Please do more of these that was fascinating

    The controller at JFK is “Kennedy Steve”…He was always sarcastic and kinda funny with that New York attitude..He’s since retired but he’s a bit of a legend in the aviation community..There’s whole videos on just his work and it can be great at times lol.

    The one at 2:15 everyone keeps missing is that he (pilot) doesn't say his call sign AT ALL, 2601 means nothing by itself. He didn't say American Airlines or American, that was the issue for the controller that started it.

      @@shawn4888 When an emergency is declared, don't they have to (by law) deploy emergency vehicles? If so the guy should have his license suspended.

      @@TombunnyHunter Actually, when an emergency is declared its up to the pilot of he thinks emergency vehicles are needed. Now in practise the pilots usually declare the nature of their emergency which will get the airport to rolling emergency vehicles without specific statements of the pilot requesting them.
      Calling an emergency generally puts every decision on the pilot while the air traffic controllers basically list off the options availible, try to gather as much info from the pilot, etc.
      In this case, the wind on the initial runway was beyond the specs of his aircraft so he requested immediate redirect to another that didn't require a missed approach and go around.
      The ATC though had other traffic to that runway and so told him to do the go around.
      The pilot then stated he would declare an emergency if he didn't get his way, ie was not yet declaring, but until he did so the decisions are still with the ATC.
      Once emergency was declared the ATC had no choice but to give the pilot clearance to the runway.
      The question is, did he have justification to declare an emergency.
      After the fact he stated he believed he had too little fuel to do the go around.
      This resulted in two issues.
      1) he didn't announce he was short on fuel at the many points he could have to get priority landing.
      2) The evidence showed he had sufficient fuel to go around and land several times ie well within normal fuel reserves expected when landing.
      So he was reprimanded for number 1) and basically told it should never have gotten to a point he thought he needed to declare an emergency.
      As for 2), due to giving pilots the benifit of the doubt on judgement calls they didn't straight out call him a liar, but the final report suggested very strongly that the pilot may have declared an emergency just to avoid going around.

      The shifts and the job itself isn't why I would never do it. It's the fact that they spend most of their careers living in hotels and being away from home.

      Air traffic control is stressful but at least they get to go home at the end of the day. A pilot may be from Atlanta but unless they are lucky they may spend a night in Denver then one in LA, then one in NYC before they get home. And you can forget about spending holidays with family. Could be a great job if you're single and hate your relatives, but if you have a family, or enjoy seeing friends and relatives - forget about it.

    People from NY or just New England in general seem to be a bit more fiery than most other places, it doesn't surprise me that this is at JFK where the ATC guys get pissy lol.

      NYC has three major airports within like 5 miles of each other. Perhaps the busiest airspace in the world. Not hard to see why they can be a little snippy.

      The guy at JFK is “Kennedy Steve”…He’s pretty much a legend in the aviation community…If you listen to some of his controlling he’s a beast working at break neck speed but always has time to make a funny or sarcastic remark.

    Even though this sounds really concerning and stressful, safety always comes first. I'm a Norwegian Air Traffic Controller and I'm sure busy days may sound really messed up to those without a trained ear. When you hear us on the radio call out to aircraft or other vehicles having made a mistake; that is us doing our jobs. That's exactly what we're there for; to ensure the safe and expeditious flow of air traffic. So to me, it would be more concerning if no-one did speak up about these kinds of mistakes. We have the full overview of the situation, each pilot more or less only cares about their own bubble (that is, themselves and the aircraft in their immediate vicinity), so it's much more difficult for them to get proper situational awareness to the level that air traffic control does.
    And to the guy who declared an emergency just to be able to land on a specific runway; that's exactly what he did. He had no legitimate reasons for declaring an emergency and I think he lost his job or was suspended or something like that after that incident. We cannot have people abusing the system like that.

      My Uncle was an ATC until he was diagnosed with Brain Cancer (which my Aunt feels was caused by all the electronic devices he was exposed to during his tenure)- he made about 200k/year, depending on Staffing levels. If he was working now, he'd probably be making close to a half Mil, considering the job market/folks blowing off work these days.

      My cousin was ATC his whole life from a young age and made supervisor. He died just barely over 50 years old of a heart attack. I always said the job killed him.

    The "emergency" landing "was a case of the pilot refusing to land on his assigned runway, and using a declared emergency to force the air traffic controller to give him the runway he wanted to land on. It was a bit contraversial - some observers felt the pilot was out of line for misusing an emergency declaration, others felt that it was justified because the assigned runway had a crosswind the pilot didn't want to deal with. There was a split about it in the aviation community.
    The background there is that you have to do what the controller says, unless you are in a declared emergency, in which case the controller is required to clear the airspace and runways to meet whatever your requests are. The rationale is that an aircraft experiencing an emergency will have special needs, and may not be able to comply with ATC requests - so the roles are reversed and everyone does everything they can to help the stricken aircraft.
    Doing that when your aircraft isn't really in trouble is, well, it caused a contraversy.

      If the crosswind on the original runway was going to cause the plane to fly out of its flight envelope then it should be fine do declare an emergency. But this seems like is was an abuse of emergency procedures.

      @@wormhole331 The crosswind was out of spec for his aircraft but the ATC crew was going to line him up differently and issued a go-around. The pilot said he didn't want to do it and lined up with a different runway. He then declared an emergency to get his way. After the fact, he stated that he had low fuel which is why he had refused the go-around, but this was something he never told ATC, and after the investigation it was found that he had more than enough for a go-around and another landing attempt while still having plenty in the reserve tank. IIRC, He was reprimanded for declaring an emergency when one did not exist.

    The full call sign is “American 2601”. The ATC was pissed off that the pilot said “2601” instead of “American 2601”. “American Airlines 2601” is just the pilot having a go.

    9:18 To explain what happened here: The Quantas pilots meant to issue that PA to the passengers, but instead, they broadcasted the PA on the external frequency. It's a thing that happens occasionally, and it's generally considered an opportunity to roast the pilot for making that mistake. I remember another such PA mistake where a pilot in a different aircraft asked for peanuts.

    That was honestly terrifying, the lack of clear comms in such a critcial situation. I assume most of these comms are routine, and everyone tightens up when it counts, but the radios are very noisy, and everyone involved has an accent. Yeah, terrifying.

      These comms were actually very calm and much less noisy than most larger airport comms. Living in Chicago near O'hare Airport and listening to the comms as I watch the planes land, it's amazing how much they actually have to deal with on a regular basis and how fast most of the comm traffic is. You get trained as a pilot to listen to the frequency and immediately pick up on anything with your sign as you are expected to repeat back the instructions. Miss something, and that means time wasted by them having to repeat things to you again and thereby tying the frequency for others who may need something more pressing.

      Nah I think maybe one of the clips was Kennedy Steve. The main one you hear is a known asshole in the JFK tower. Steve who retired years ago is usually pretty laid back and throws a humorous twist on things. That guy you mostly hear in this video is just a prick.

    Air traffic controller is one of the most stressful jobs. They can retire very early and they are only allowed to work so many years. They also have a good amount of breaks during their work day because of the stress. Suicide and heart problems are quite high in this career

    In the US Air Force they train air traffic controllers at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. I went to school there for Wideband Communications in 1980 and I roomed with a guy that was training for ATC. He washed out and they made him a cop instead. That school is brutal, the failure rate is crazy.

    I used to play World of Warcraft with an air traffic controller. He played it to relax since his job is so stressful. Wow, could that man scream when he got frustrated? Also, the job is so stressful they make you retire with full benefits at the age of 45.

    A few weeks ago a frequency we were on for long range walkie talkies picked up the radio signals from planes near an airport we were by and we were just listening to a pilot screaming over the radio MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! WE'RE GOING DOWN, WE'RE GOING DOWN! Air traffic control kept trying to get through from what we could hear, but I don't know what happened with it, but it was extremely unsettling.

    The Qantas one was supposed to have been over the PA System to the passengers; however, the first officer transmitted it over the radio to ATC and the other planes. Other pilots roasted him by saying good one, etc.

    Here are two stories I'm sure ya'll English blokes will enjoy!
    #1The German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are a short-tempered lot. They not only expect one to know one's gate parking location but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (a PanAm 747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurt ground control and a British Airways 747 (call sign "Speed bird 206") after landing: Speedbird 206: "Top of the morning Frankfurt. Speed bird 206, clear of the active runway." Ground: "Guten morgen! You will taxi to your gate!" The big British Airways 747 pulled onto the main taxi way and slowed to a stop. Ground: "Speed bird, do you not know where you are going?" Speed bird 206: "Stand by a moment ground. I'm looking up our gate location now." Ground: With some arrogant impatience, "Speed bird 206, have you never flown to Frankfurt before?!" Speed bird 206 (cooly): "Yes, I have, in 1944... But in another type of Boeing... And I didn't stop." ________________________________________
    #2 Flight Engineer: I was a Pan Am 552 Flight Engineer waiting for start clearance in Munich, Germany. I was listening to the radio since I was the junior crew member. This was the conversation I overheard (I don't recall call signs any longer): Lufthansa: (In German) "Ground, what is our start clearance time?" Ground: (In English) "If you want an answer you must speak English." Lufthansa: (In English) "I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany. Why must I speak English?" Beautiful English Accent: (before ground could answer) "Because you lost the bloody war!"

I decided against it, because I thought it was too stressful for a job I wouldn't really love. Now I'm over 40, never worked in a job I loved and are kinda broke. Plus, seeing this video, the job sounds interesting. If I could travel back in time I'd slap some sense into my 19 year old self 😂

    This was so funny to check you guys getting into this. "It is either going to be incredibly boring or hilarious". This compilation was good but Kennedy Steve was a dude I binge watched a while ago after discovering this and never thought in my life I would enjoy ATC conversations. If you go the route to check out more, you have to check out Kennedy Steve. The man is a professional through and through and slips jokes in all the time at the same time, just a hilarious dude.

    Well pilots have specific words to use in emergency, you dont call "im gonna declare emergency" in between normal conversation. You call either "PAN PAN" or "MAYDAY". Then you tell what the emergency is all the while ATC is clearing the airspace, ATC also give you possibilities where you can or cannot land. I wouldnt be surprised if the pilot was under investigation after that.

    Bruv as ATC everyone has the goal of safety but when a pilot has the ability to do whatever at that moment in time stuff can get unsafe easy.

      The plane was not landing and it was not running out of fuel. It was taxiing/waiting in line to take off and approaching its “minimum fuel,” which is its minimum takeoff fuel. The pilot did not want to have to refuel, which is understandable, but not at all the emergency you’re imagining.

    The “useless chatter” about the report is because once a pilot let his kid sit in the captains seat and the kid ended up crashing the plane and killing everyone. Also, during take off and landing only essential comms are allowed. Those are the most dangerous times of flying. So now the cockpit does not allow any visitors. It’s a huge no no. Also the one where the guy was making a pa announcement, instead of broadcasting it to his passengers he put it out over frequency

    The reason the ATC got so adamant about the child's voice is because there have been two crashes where the pilot let a child take the controls. Both were Leer Jets flying private, not commercial, and both were Russian.
    I am pretty sure since 9/11 it's against the rules to have anyone in the cockpit now aside from pilot and co-pilot as well.

    Anytime a plane lands, they have to jettison any extra fuel that they have in their tanks. They only load what they need.

      No, the only time they dump fuel is when the need to land in an emergency and the fuel makes them to heavy to land.

      if this was the case it would be a major environmental issue, they only load the fuel they need because the more they take the heavier the plane is which requires them to need more fuel.

    Air traffic controllers also have everyone's safety to take into account. Everyone. Everyone in the air and on the ground. Pilots can't fuck around with ATC. That pilot that declared an emergency just to get the runway he wanted should have been fired and had his license taken (I'm not sure how he was dealt with, but I can guarantee that he was).

    Air Traffic Controllers get their full retirement benefits at the age of 52 and 15 years in the job here in Germany.
    That's 60% of their last paycheck, however, they're allowed to stay until the age of 55 which grants them 70%.
    They're at high risk for heart attacks... It's a friggin' stressful job - I fully understand why they get testy.

    The reason for the full call sign is for safety reasons. Once ATC shortens your call sign then you can use what they said. The pilot was being a prick.

    As an American, I don't hear a dick, just someone from NYC. This is JFK. As someone who hates pomp and circumstance and wasting time, I find this very refreshing. NYers aren't malicious people, they just want to get through their day without a hassle too, and are just blunt. I prefer it personally, but I can see how other Americans and beyond would see it as a little hostile. This is one of the busiest airports in the world, I imagine it can get much worse.

    AirMexico the person overheard on the radio accidentally is clearly a woman saying some call sign about delta. Not a child.
    Edit: I think I heard her say “Fila uno a la cuatro, delta…” which translates to “line one to (line) four, delta. Idk why the tower immediately assumed the worst.

    I love listening to prissy english pilots having tantrums and getting smacked down by JFK. Happens daily. Also don't forget: the tower can see everything. The pilots can't see their own planes, and can barely see any others.

    The emergency wasn't a real emergency. Pilot just didn't want to land on the runway that was being used for landings due to a crosswind. Kind of a baby to throw a fit just to get his way. Unless he was short of fuel which the clip never mentions, there's no reason he couldn't just treat it as a missed approach and get back in line.
