My mom was always in charge of making the beans for our family barbecues, and this recipe reminds of the barbecue baked beans she made.
There isn’t anything fancy about this recipe, and I can’t recall her ever measuring the ingredients. My mom tasted as she went (I’m sure that’s why she’s such a good cook); and when the beans were just right, they were ready for the smoker.
The one thing that was always the same with her beans was the ShowBoat brand pork & beans. I will beat that just about every household in the south has a can of these somewhere in the pantry. She would drain several cans of pork & beans (leaving the hunks of fat) into a large pan or dutch oven and then start adding the ingredients that turns them into barbecue beans.
Brown Sugar and Sweet Onion always went in along with ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire. She would add whatever sauce was on sale or in the fridge and follow that with BBQ seasonings from the spice cabinet. We didn’t have any fancy rubs back then, so lots of time she would concoct her own.
Once the beans tasted up to her satisfaction they went on the smoker for about 3 hours. There wasn’t any specific time or temperature but the beans were always ready when it was time to serve the meat.
Barbecue Baked Beans Ingredients:
- 75oz Showboat Pork & Beans (5-15oz cans)
- 1 Vidalia Onion diced
- 1 cup Light Brown Sugar
- 1 cup BBQ Sauce (use your favorite brand or what’s on sale)
- 1/2 cup Ketchup
- 2 Tablespoons Mustard
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire
- 1/2 cup BBQ Rub (any bbq rub will work for beans)
Barbecue Baked Beans Directions:
1. Prepare charcoal smoker or other grill for indirect cooking at 250-275 degrees. Use your favorite wood for smoke flavor.
2. Drain the pork & beans and pour into an aluminum pan.
3. Add the diced onion, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, BBQ Sauce, Worcestershire Sauce, and BBQ Rub.
4. Gently fold to incorporate the ingredients and cook smoke uncovered for 2.5-3 hours or until onions are soft and liquid has thickened slightly.

Tried the bbq baked beans on the Traeger. Took them to a church function and received several comments on how good they were. But the best compliment was an empty pan. Thank you for your time and informative videos. They are making me a super star with church family. Awesome recipe. 👍🏻
I did the same thing, too! Now they request them whenever there is an event at the church. I modified mine a bit by adding a full pound of bacon (after frying it up in a skillet) and half of the grease they produce (I save the other half in my frig in a "bacon grease" container) to the beans. Instead of using 5 can's of pork and beans, I use two and the rest are one can of black beans, kidney beans and butter beans, drained. Best beans ever!
Copia
Empty pan at a pot luck type get together always makes you feel good!
Just for good measure, I pre-cook about 6 slices of bacon and diced up a bell pepper along with your recipe and it's a home run with everyone!!
This recipe is the truth! Made these yesterday (added some bacon on the top when put on smoker) & paired them with his Texas pulled pork. Damn what a meal that made! Best bbq channel on RUclips!
I never thought to just sprinkle the bacon on the top. I usually mix the bacon in with the beans and half the bacon grease. They don't come out greasy because the beans absorb the grease. But the flavor is out of this world.
Malcolm's room that night sounded like the 4th of july
3:35 🤣🤣🤣😮😮
lol
More like a space shuttle launch.
No wonder he's so fat!
Rohan Zener really??? Try another way of being a dick.
Childhood food remains the best!
Tried these beans yesterday, cooked them for almost 3hrs, absolutely beautiful! They taste so good, thanks for the recipe Malcolm.
Made these today and they were the hit of the bbq! I did add a green pepper like my Mother used to do and they turned out perfect!
"We'll be sounding off tonight" - lol
I've been following this recipe for the last 5 or 6 times I made baked beans, it always turns out great. Easy to make and good to eat!
I’ve made these a few times. Always great. I’ve added leftover pulled pork and leftover brisket and it just adds to the goodness.
Just love a dump and stir recipe! Wonderful!
I clicked all 3 of the new videos really quick!
something I don't complain about often, your videos are too short. I could watch them all day. Thanks
Super proud of you Malcom! good things happen to good people. I wish you the best!
I made this today and added a pack of bacon and a red bell pepper. Omg everyone LOVED it!
I loved that you referenced your childhood because for all the food we cook it all goes back to to home and what we grew up eating! Loved all three videos awesome as always!!
Yet people are sitting here in the comments saying how he shoulda made these beans THEIR way, instead of his way from his childhood, LMAO!!!
@@newportnelson exactly!!!
Thank you so much for this recipe. It is very simple and straightforward. I truly appreciate your channel.
I followed this recipe today. Oh my word they were unbelievably good!! I'd added some fried smoked porcetta in and placed them on the lower shelf in thr WSM so they got the juices from the ribs for the last hour. Thanks man from the UK 👍🏼
Man I love this dude. Love his bbq products as well just got his the bbq rub and the vinegar sauce in the mail, freaking awesome. Recipes are easy to follow and delicious!
Agreed. We are lucky enough to have a couple of stores locally that sell his products so when I run out it's only a 5 minute trip to restock.
@@535679831 definitely jealous. He ships pretty quickly but it would be amazing to have his products here locally where I am.
The year is 2023. I made these beans for a thanksgiving side. I added a cooked diced up tritip and smoked the beans with red oak smoke. SOOOO GOOD! Thank you Malcom!
Made this several times now while letting my ribs drip in and its amazing!!

Amazing recipe!
I definitely like to add bacon or brisket to the beans along with some molasses. I stir a little to get the smoke flavor throughout the pan while cooking too. Great video and easy recipe to follow! Thanks
Malcolm you’re awesome dude. These videos are what got me to purchase a smoker. Keep up the good work.
Made these baked beans today to take to Mother's Day Dinner! They were very Good!!! Thank you for sharing the recipe and the video.
Great video as always, Malcolm!
Thats my childhood right there. Classic
Great recipe Malcolm! I usually stir mine several times for the first 2 hours to get more smokiness infused, then let them glaze over for the last hour or so. Cheers!
Best BBQ channel. Even I learned a thing or two
Absolutely delicious lookin' beans Malcolm. Not a dang thing wrong with these. Great video sir.
Simple, great recipe, explained well, without a load of dragged out talking. Great flavors on these too! Subscribed!
That looks like a large tin of barbecue love!! Need that right now!!
Pit Beans are one of our favorites!
Another awesome and simple recipe from Malcolm. My tweak is to add chopped jalapeno to your taste for spicy flavor. Next, toss in whatever leftover meat you've got on hand for flavor and texture. Best are meats that have previously been marinated, smoked or seasoned as you get a hint of that flavoring as an add. Pulled pork, pork belly or meat stripped from ribs all work well. Could also use brisket or anything else. Finally, replace two of the store-bought baked bean cans with one can of black beans and one can of kidney beans. Be sure to drain off that thick fluid that the black and red beans are packed in and wash the beans off in a colander before adding to the dish. This gives the final product extra visual interest from the contrasting shades of beans as well as a small amount of additional texture in every bite.
I've made the same beans except I use 4 different beans (pinto, black, kidney and northern), I add one pound of bacon chopped up, 1/2 pound of Jimmy Dean sage sausage crumbled up and three cloves of garlic minced. It's a meal in itself! So good!
holy man that looks delicious 👌🏼
I made these for a camping potluck last weekend and they were a hit. I did add a pound of bacon along with 5 chopped chili peppers for a little spice. I do think I'll either lower the temp or take off around 2.5 hours because they got really thick. Its and easy recipe and it was a hit!
I really like your earlier recipe with the red bell pepper, garlic, and pulled pork. I’m sure these are fantastic too!
Yes. Everyone who I have made them for say they’re the best they’ve ever had!
Really nice and simple.. gonna do this to go with my brisket baguettes and horseradish mayo
I will try it for
The 4 th . Looks easy . Thx simple

Simplicity is best !
Malcom stay healthy my dude! I need your wisdom to guide me for years. Thanks for the great videos
Why make a comment like that? It's an instructional video for BBQ beans not a health channel. Mind your business son.

Oh my goodness. This looks so good I was hoping to get a plate after you filled yours. lol. I will be trying this real soon.
Been making my baked beans just like this for years. The only difference between your childhood recipe and mine is chunks of bacon.
Awesome recipe as usual Malcom, your recipes never disappoint and if they do disappoint someone screwed up along the way.
I do the same thing.... I add thick bacon
@@germanmusic3771 do you cook the bacon at all before putting it in? If not, what do you have your smoker at temp wise and for how long?
@@PoofyBuddydid you find out if you cook the bacon before adding it to the beans? I have the same question
@@manuelz32u60 sadly, no. I will be cooking my bacon when I make this soon, but not fully cook it. I will probably get it halfway, maybe 3/4ths done and throw it in with the rest
LOOK'D GOOD!!!!!!
