Best youtube review so far of the civic hatch. Appreciate the honest take on it, including the turbo lag and rev hang which no other reviewer has mentioned except very briefly. It felt like watching a real person and car enthusiast drive the car instead of a journalist. Thanks for not making it cheesy and avoiding tired taglines or any stupid attempt at being witty or funny.
Paco LeRoi thanks! truth is, that's just exactly what I am, a real consumer and an enthusiast. I'm glad you liked the video, I'll try to post one weekly to mark the progress of this car, and my other 3.
In my opinion, I love the rev hang, I think it sounds amazing when you hit 6k, and Instead of shifting, just let off the gas and it rev hangs for 5 or so seconds, and turbo lag isn't good for performance, but the thrill of getting a sudden rush at a certain rpm is what gives you a smile when you drive :)
Thanks for the honest review and driving footage. Spirited driving of the 6spd seems to be missing from every other review, but not yours. I'm also glad you pointed out the rev-hang, I learned it first from your video. You ultimately helped me with my decision to order my new '17 Sport Hatch 6MT in Aegean Blue, thanks!
Thanks for the kind words, I really try my best to be as honest as possible (some people don't like it when I'm honest and the car I'm driving isn't very good). So happy you're getting a hatch, blue is a really nice color for it.
Just got my 2018 HB Sport 6sp (and first stick*) a few weeks ago. Big ups to you for being a positive influence in helping me choose this car and absolutely loving and learning each day!
@@FlyinGato Thank you, sir! I had to travel to dirty Jerz, and they weren't quite wanting to give up the car at the price point I requested. Nonetheless with persistence, $20.5 OTD ($500 trade included as part of the price). The more I drive, the burden of the price won't be that much of a significance any longer! Cheers.
Rev hang in my 2014 Accord Sport 2.4 6MT. The rev hang isn't for EPA, you physically have to inject fuel to do that. The rev hang is there to keep flywheel momentum going as the flywheels are quite light. You'll see why it's there when you turn the A/C on and it drops much faster. I've tested this on my Accord about 500 times. It's one of my biggest issues. I can't ever get used to it. Sometimes it'll hang for what seems like weeks, others much more reasonable. I'm used to rev matching every shift to prevent from using the clutch. You'll see what I mean the more you use the car. I've tested it so much I've physically watched the revs go UP even though my foot has been off the gas for a while. It's not just because the foot is in it. I can make exaggerated movements to people to demonstrate it. But it's not EVERY single time, just most times. You'll see what I mean. I am also looking at this exact vehicle as well. I find that my Accord Sport gets me 32.5 MPG average, mostly highway, but I hammer on it quite a bit. The performance of this Civic is similar to the Accord sport, so I'm not sure if this lateral movement would be useful to me.
Yea, this rev hang issues is one of the things I dislike about this civic, but at least there is hope with a future tune. I looked at manual accords as well, but I really think the hatchback offers good utility, so I went with the hatch instead.
Honestly the Manual 2.4 Sport Accord is probably the better choice in most cases. BUT... The hatchback is a tiny bit more fuel efficient 8%, but that's running 87 octane, you lose the cost going to 93. There is no real tunability with the 2.4 You can get a cast bellmouth with no cat for like 8WHP. You won't even feel that. With the Civic hatch, there is a a bit more versatility which is important to me. And more importantly, tuning. I wish I knew what kind of connecting rods Honda put in this motor, or what kind of direct injection fuel capacity it's got. I'm guessing those will be changed in the Si or the R. You can tune that rev hang out thank GOD! It's obnoxious. I'd HIGHLY suggest though that you run a high end catch can as soon as possible. Please take it from me having owned many direct injection and DI turbo cars in the past.
Honda has become a money pit. Veloster N seems the way to go since it's track ready stock. No tuning required, no modding, no rev hang, no turbo lag, no torque steer. The fact that you have to tune the Honda Civic just for it to work properly goes to show just how bad the automaker has become. Only the Type R gets it right, but then again $38k is ridiculous for a Civic that doesn't even have an active exhaust. So folks end up paying even more money to mod the exhaust on top of the $38k they've already spent. Like I said, money pit. Lol
yea, it's just a cover, I don't even use it.... I think it's because, if you're part of the press release, Honda made a big deal out of it, so the reviewers made it a big deal too. I mean, it's a great design, but I expect nothing less from Honda, so it gets a big "meh" from me haha.
I got the base manual. the base uses regular fuel and has 174 HP. Sport and upgrades have 180 HP, and use premium fuel. SIX HP for premium is a no-go. it is quiet. meh on styling. It looks better than the Fit. Note that the base does not have a tweeter mount for speakers.
The cars are hard to find as this model is imported from swindon in the UK. Honda EU are normally a little on the slow side until they go into full production. They are tooling up for the Type R too later in 2017. The factory is also expanding to fulfil Global production rather than just EU. Anyway it was a real good review from our cousins across the water. No biased crap, straight to the point and very thorough. Much appreciated @flyingato. Excellent job. Probably the best review I have seen. I like it a lot, but its going to be hard to tear this tuned 1380kg Civic FN3 out of my hands. Better try my hardest to kill it :/
yea, I still haven't seen another hatchback civic here in the tri-state area that wasn't still in the dealership, and the manual ones are still very hard to find. As for the Type R, I can't wait to see it when it comes out. Thanks for the kid words btw, I'm a very amateur film guy, what I'm really trying to do is share my enthusiasm for these cars. As for your FN3, love the shape of that car, and if you already have a bond with it, it's probably best just to keep it, that's how I am with my BB6 Prelude and my S2000.
Man, I watch this video almost daily. Waiting for mine to come in. Exact same specs, color combo as yours. Dude at the dealer said that by years end there will only be like 9 white sport manuals in America.
Already love it, man! Traded in my 2012 Accord LX for it. I had some great memories in that basic car and was a bit sad to see it stripped of the license plates at the dealership. I'm hoping the next owner treats it well. Think I'll be a loyal Honda driver for a very long time!
Ironically this civic face look generation is the best selling civic ever in the world. It’s more aggressive and sporty looking compare to previous generations and the new models that starts in 2022.
OMG so many comments here. Lol it took me forever to go through, and forgot is I commented on this video or not, wanted to check if I did, and what I wrote if that was the case. I couldn't find one, so, here it is, July 14, 2018... I still love this car. The Sport Touring Hatchback has all the bells and whistles, but costs several thousands more. The Sport Hatchback has it's unique charm, with a more serious performance driving vibe, especially fir thise that want the manual and are not in Canada to get the Sport Touring Hatchback with the speed. Grammar NinjaCat (Gato) must comment about a remark at the beginning of this video. It's an Intercooler, not a intercooler. Lol Aside from that, great video, as always. Maybe I should have been an automotive journalist, I can write a lot, but have not driven many different cars, and have certain preferences and biases, even though I like all kinds of cars and vehicles. Other than my past personal favorite cars I owned, my 2984 Buick Grand National, 2000 Chevy Impala LS and 2006 Chevy Impala SS. My 2011 Chevy Cruze RS awaits funds to restore, it be transformed into a stealth, high performance monster, or sold, or whatever. That Hyundai Elantra Sport caught my interest with all the performance, features and options on the fully loaded version. In blue, of course, I wanted that car, even if it was a Hyundai, after watching all the videos. Until I saw the Honda Sport Hatchback. Game changer. All the colors are nice, with the silver bring the least, bring so plain. I wanted the Sonic Grey Pearl for it's no nonsense stealth performance factor... Until I saw the Aegean Blue Metallic in person, and on certain videos. It looks like a pearl paint finish. I love the styling, even thise honeycomb panels so many detests. I haven't seen any efforts fir the aftermarket to make creative spins on replacements. Maybe with James Bond type options. Lol There's just one thing I notice that makes it quirky that I don't think the Si has. The odd way the pointed outer corners of the taillights just out when viewed from an angle from the front, like even with the front of the car, with a range of a foot or two away from the headlights, etc. But it's minor. So many people complsin about the lack of this and that, but they don't get it. You can get an EX with more options for about the same price, but not all the sport performance features, appearance add ons, and niceties like the leather steering wheel, paddle shifters for the CVT, exhaust, wheels, suspension, etc. It would be nice to have the turn signsl lights on the outside mirrors, LED headlights, nicer interior door panels and other treatments, and the rear seat center armrest, and map pockets behind the front seats, preferably both sides, like my three most recent cars/Chevy's. My Buick GN didn't have it, but it had beautiful custom seats only that year model had. The Sport Touring Hatchback outside mirrors, and rear seat with the center armrest could be retrofittedfrom upper level trims. I also am undecided about the headlights. I like the Projector look, even though I heard the LED ones casts a cool light footprint. But I believe you could get aftermarket bulbs to make it brighter, and whiter. I would consider that with bulbs that are about equal brightness to the OEM LEDs, without bring illegal, it excessively bright and blinding So much other things you can customize and upgrade, little by little, but looks are subjective, and all the complainers just don't get the fact that the Sport Hatchback was specifically equipt as is like ok'd school.petfirmsnce cars of ok'd to have all the sport looks and performance, and be affordable. Like the Si, most who get these cars don't care about the Honda Sense, or similar options equiptment. The Subaru Integra Sport Sedan and Hatchback is the same way. But you can get all this safety features and other options, but you don't have to, and can save money, if you want more back to basics performance and functionality. I know exactly what I would want, snd would add, but can do it in increments as budget allows. Whether it be looks, functionality, confirt, safety, performance, etc. I would decide that step by step. As a start, it's great out of the box, per se. Fast enough fir me, though I wish I could get the LSD and engine upgrades, and maybe stereo from the Si. But they have suspension upgrades, and Borla and other aftermarket exhaust systems. Other than the other available aftermarket pieces I would want, legal smoke tint windows, weather mats, and customized pieces, and the Red JDM Honda badges for front, rear and steering wheel, I think I would be happy with the engine peformsnce in stock form, since I would get the CVT and not have the Rev hang problem that I believe Hondata can fix. It still could be a consideration, but the power would be sufficient. The only other main thing I would consider other than suspension, stereo, exhaust would be upgraded brakes. Honda now offers the HFP package on the Civic Sport Hatchback and Si, but I only like the HFP emblems, and brakes from the package, that may be available separately. I don't like the options roof spoiler, which is also available without the HFP package, and the 19" wheels. The tires would also be an additional charge I love the factiryb28" wheels, and the optional wheels are another nice option, but so expensive. The HFP on the Si would be anotger thing, since it does not have that spoiler, and also has some performance tweaks I can't remember. I think it had to do with suspension and throttle response. So, close to the $25K range, at the mist, close to $30K with all the options and aftermarket add ons, the base CVT Civic Sport Hatchback would be fine for me.
Thanks for pointing out the more conventional gauge cluster. [edit -- and the higher floor in the rear -- I had NO idea] The more I see, the more I like the Sport trim versus the EX. If Honda gave the option of CarPlay/Android Auto in this trim, I'd have no desire at all for the EX and above (and I think Honda knows this, too).
If I could have it exactly as I wanted it, I would spring for leather seats, apple/android carplay and keyless entry/push button start. However, for the price of around 22K, I don't think you'd get much better value than this. The Focus ST, with its incentives on it, was a close choice, but resale is not going to be as good.
9:42 You're the only person that I have seen who mentions the difference in build quality between the rear and front door panels. I notice this when I tint these civics and many other cars. It all comes down to saving costs for these manufacturers. Logical since the average driver may not notice the change in quality between the front and rear door panels due to spending most of their time in the driver's seat. Good stuff!!
Nice review. I truly believe that the Civic is on another Level again (like last time they did with the 2006 Generation). The Competition needs to go back to the boards. I drove the Sentra, Corolla, Mazda, Cruze, Ford Focus, Hyundai's and Kia's and the Civic is the one to have. Truly amazing stuff. Perhaps Mazda was the closest on the Smile Factor but nowhere near the rest of the Experience.
Very nice and cool ride, Gato! I also love the white and black color scheme. Thankfully they blacked out the window trim chrome. Have fun and enjoy it!
I have heard three excuses for rev hang from automotive designers. 1. is that it helps to rev match for inexperienced drivers to save on clutch wear and components. Also prevents jerking. 2. is that it prevents flooding and unburnt fuel from entering the emissions system. Wouldn’t the computer controlled injection control that? But 3 was interesting. When a low priced vehicle is just as fun to drive as a high end sports car then those cars won’t sell nearly as often. If they don’t sell the race model then they don’t make them and without a flagship model it devalues the lower models. Interesting.
Love the way these new civics look. When my '05 civic finally kicks the bucket I'm definitely gonna be looking for one of these!. As for the lack of features...honestly I've been with my '05 civic for so long that I prefer the way the infotainment looks on this trim as opposed to the higher ends with the touchscreens. However I will miss the sunroof :(
Nice review, love Honda, love Civics! But you did not mention engine at all. Assume its 1.5 petrol turbo there in USA. In Europe we also get 1.6 diesel turbo and 1.0 petrol 3 cyl - which is pretty crappy, underpowered, and have had problems. The 1.5 is meant to be the best of the bunch for all round performance, economy, handling etc. (Unless you go Type-R of course)
oh I love roundabouts, don't get me wrong, it's just that people here can't seem to know how to use them, so you end up having to use extreme caution to go through them.
Good review. Answered many of the questions/concerns I had about this car. Not too much of a fan with the honey comb design though. In this regard, the golf gti is a little more appealing. I am however looking for a car that is going to be reliable, so it looks like I may end up getting the Civic Sport or maybe the Type R if I can get a good price on the latter.
you have the same interior setup with ivory/black im not a fan of the interior then again I bought mine used during the height of the pandemic in 2020 only paid $16k with 27k on the odometer. except mine has CVT. its better than nissan's crap. this car wasn't planned for me to buy. I had a incident with my 8th gen EX sedan in which my insurance declared it totaled at 177k. my timing chain ripped and oil pan busted. but now that car is in Puerto Rico. I told them to cut me a check and i''ll get something else I still have it and going strong at 110k on the odometer just do your regular maitenance and you're good to go
great takes and views on this car, I'm having a hard time deciding if I should trade in my civic coupe, lol maybe next year :D but im linking this car more and more, HARD to find a manual thou!
great video, you actually convinced me to learn manual when you took the car for a drive. My one criticism though is how you have your camera mounted on your head when you're driving it made me feel really motion sick lol
Learning to drive stick is very worthwhile if you want to really enjoy cars. As for the head movements, I agree, it was the best cam I had at the time (gopro), but now I have a nicer one, should help a bit. I do still use the go pro to show "POV" items. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it!
I've got about 1K miles on my '17 Accord coupe 6-6AT, just picked it up a month ago. I get that same rev hang, actually. It's worse in sport mode. And it's freaking annoying as hell! If you get on throttle really heavy, then let off, that rev hang causes the car not to decelerate for about a second. Freaked me out the first time it happened! I came from an LX CVT, so the 6AT takes getting used to as the CVT does not have this rev hang. I thought I'd mention it and see if any other people with Accord 6-6ATs noticed it. Loved the vid btw, the civic hatch is the best civic ever, IMO. I like it. Even though I'm an Accord guy.
Unfortunately, the hatch doesn't come in that trim, only the sport model and LX model have the 6 speed manual, at least for now. I also think the hatch has a good value proposition, with it's useful hatch area, and in my opinion, better styling as well. I also really don't like the touchscreen in these Civics, they look nice when brand new, but look nasty after some time with smudges. I also prefer the analogue gauges vs the digital one in the EX-T, not a fan of the blue coloring, and it does wash out a bit when the sun hits it.
well i understand, but the EX-T 2017 civic has a lot more options and at the dyno it shows 190HP and 190fpt, and i like the sunroof, the engine start button the keyless entry the heated seats, and the lane watch, The hatch is nice i looked at that one first but than i went for the 2017 ex-t 6 speed and its really nice, White Orchid Pearl
Nice, the hatch has the same engine, and the power is definitely nice. If you want the options and the manual, the sedan is a great choice. White Orchid Pearl (WOP) is the best color in my opinion.
that little turbo makes it pretty sporty, I think. I mean, my 335d keeps up with a 2012 carrera S, so I know what real power is, and the Civic is pretty good.
I wish i had these empty roads and desert parking lots around to play with my car a bit more. I have to drive 1 hour to find a place like that. Nice drive!
all the new Civics look really nice. I personally like the civic sedan models.. I think the back looks better then the Hatchback. BUt the TYpe R looks fucking badass. I already bought a new civic ex-t not long ago or I would get the TYpe R in a heartbeat
Excellent review and good production values. Mic sound dropped a few times so watch that in the future. I'm torn between the civic hatch and VW Golf. I like the reliability of Honda, but I prefer the look and better shifting feel of the VW. What do you think?
+NKQ55 I would go with the Civic hatch, my buddy has a GTI from 2011, and it's plagued with problems. Thanks for the kind words on the video, my newer videos have much better equipment and production
I really enjoyed your review of the 2017 Honda Civic. I own a 2017 Honda Civic hatch sport the model before yours (turbo was unavailable) my wife has a 2012 Honda Civic hatch as well. I purchased mine because I loved driving hers. Both models are made in the U.K, build quality is excellent, the new model just released is made in Thailand. I can already see some cost cutting in the new model, different tyre manufacturer, ours have Continental tyres, the rubber strip between the front doors and body have been removed, the base model has cheaper feeling and looking material compared to our Civics. The dash in the new model looks good but I prefer the previous model, two tiered design. The build quality is not as good as the U.K built Civic, this may improve as time goes by. I am not a fan of CVT transmissions, give me a good conventional auto every time. I found the new model not as quiet but still acceptable. What I did like is the better rear suspension, turbo motor which is excellent and the increase in size. The new model drove well and I was impressed I see where the money went. I think the hatch will sell well. I can't wait to see the Honda type R.
The model sold in Australia is made in Thailand the U.S models are NOT made in Thailand, I think U.S or Canada, Manufacturers have factories all over the world nowadays. Regards Lindsay.
Sorry about that, I'm buying new equipment in the coming weeks to rectify that issue. I was using a Drift HD Ghost, a camera released 5 years ago, and I didn't notice the problem until I posted it on youtube.
Good luck with your beautiful car. I really want the Hatch in Sonic Gray but the 6 speed turbo Hatch lacks a lot of the amenities I expect in a sporty car. Looks like the Coupe for me. But, man, do I really love the look of the Hatch.
@FlyinGato Nice review, congratulations. I drive a Bmw 420d GC but think of getting a civic Type R. I'm in Europe. I tested shortly the 9'th get Type R. I'll wait for the new Type R then decide. Until then I'm really interested how your Civic feels compared to your Bmw E90: - body roll on different speeds, fast changing the direction. - how is the steering feel: do you feel gripping the road in the wheel, are you aware where the wheels are, feeling resistance variation with cornering angle/speed, any dead zone in the steering center? For example my 4 series GC is kind of numb in the steering compared with E90 that set a benchmark. - does car body seems rigid, well put together compared with Bmw. Expecially when driving, taking turns.
These are all excellent questions - When it comes to steering, since the power steering is electric in the Civic vs hydraulic steering in the E90, it's more direct feeling in the E90, you feel where the wheels are better, and you get better feedback. That said, the civic feels way more tossable and while it's an electric power steering unit, it still does give great feedback. I can say with certainty the nearly 1000 pounds of lightness the civic has is a huge advantage over the E90, I feel like the Civic and I are telepathically connected, where as the E90 feels quite heavy and sometimes feels like it's fighting my inputs. I'll post a video of this at some point, just have to find the time to compare the two.
Thanks for the reply. A comparative review would be great, as E90 is a benchmark for the "ultimate driving machine". Anyway I'll keep watching your reviews as I'm interested in this car. I am looking for a driver oriented car, not overly complicated / costing a fortune. If new Honda Civic Sport/Type R proves to have more of these qualities over the current 4 series GC(Sport line) then I'll go with it. Despite this 4 series offering a great package (looks, better handling than average, comfort, economy) I want a more thrilling car.
Good review. Your video is prompting me to get the Sport model although I have been thinking of waiting for the Type R. After watching your video, I am thinking about the problems I might have with the Type R in terms of paying a premium for the vehicle and the likely speeding tickets I will incur up here in Canada.
Hey FlyingGato, what a beautiful car! I got the same one but with black interior and it's the LX model. Do you know if they sale the blacked out weather strips for this car? The ones that are found on the sport model. Thanks.
Thank you for the very useful video, I just got my hatchback sport 2018 last month and trying to find a way to add a remote start. I'm living in NYC and winter is cold, so I need a remote start. How much will it usually cost to add a remote start?
Others have said it and I will too, this is the best review of this car online right now. Is it true there's no XM/Sirius radio though? That's a huge deal breaker for me. I'm going to ask my dealer if this can be upgraded/special ordered.
Hey bud, thanks for the kind words! The Sport and LX do not have XM radio, you'd have to go EX or Touring for that. I'm so used to using my phone for audio, I was ok with it.
Thanks for confirming the rumors lol! I currently drive a 12 year old Toyota, which will probably last another 12 years. But right now I'm working on locking in the best car to get for the $$$ and desired features if/when the ol' Yota gives it up or starts being a money pit. I was damn near ready to hit a dealer after seeing this car on some pages/channels. But then one dude said no 'sat radio and I was crushed. But while it is a deal breaker, it's really not because I'm sure there's a way to have the sat head unit installed on a sport. Those wheels, engine and manual trans are just too great of a combo to compromise for the other models.
Hatchbacks becoming more and more popular in Canada, also I'm seeing a lot of Ford Transit vans aswell in Ontario lol.. Ford Transits have been in U.K since forever yet they are just starting to arrive in Canada now haha, Canada is seriously 10 years or more behind like lets say Britain.. Just now hatchbacks are becoming more and more popular and more efficient in Canada but this has been standard in the U.K for quite some time. I think this exact car is actually built in U.K aswell so I heard
Hey bud, yea I'm glad the hatchback is coming back in style, it's the best car body style due to the usefulness. These are built in the UK, it's the first "British" car I own haha
I might pick it up some day if I can afford it. I've owned my Mazda 3 hatchback for 6 years and I love it, such a nice looking hatchback. This Honda is nice though but might even wait for the Type R.
Great job. I watched the night and day review. Manual transmission makes this car more sporty. I also like your choice of color. Is this hard for a new driver to drive this manual civic hatchback sport?
Thanks! I think this is probably one of the easiest ones to learn on, as it has the brake hold assist feature, which holds the brake for you until you get rolling again. I definitely recommend the manual on this car, though, definitely transforms it to a sporty car.
Hey man nice review! How are the speakers in this? I have an accord sport 2016 rn and I really like those speakers. I am thinking of getting this for my next car so I am wondering about the speakers
Hey bud, the Sport and LX are not great when it comes to speakers. They aren't that bad, certainly good enough for me, but for true audiofiles, I would get the Touring, I hear that has great speakers.
FlyinGato im not particularly an audiofile but i just dont want muddy or washed out sound. Is that the case w the civic sport? And also how is the bass? Decent?
what is your opinion on the honda, fit? I have a 2015 and really it's a great car but I don't know much about cars. I really want to get the sport touring manual. but having paid 3 years of my fit already I'm wondering if it's worth it. what do you think? thanks again for the video and review very helpful.
The Fit is very good in terms of storage space and capacity, it's also good on gas. The only thing I don't like too much is the lack of performance compared to the turbo Civic. If I were you, I would just keep the Fit for now, keep it for another couple of years, save up some money then trade it up for something really nice, maybe a Type R?
I think you did a really good job on this review dude! I'm trading in my '13 Focus ST in tomorrow for a '17 Hatch Sport. I've been test driving it over the weekend and I am fairly impressed! It doesn't have the power that the ST has, but it's almost as light as a Fiesta ST and is bigger inside than my Focus. I'm really interested in how the long term impressions will be, because the short term in the 300 miles I've put on it so far are pretty good.
Thanks! it was one of my first car review videos I ever made! ST is a great car, but the hatch sport is just better. Took mine to three track days, just needs better brake pads and fluid, and a KTUNER to wake it up a bit, it's the BESt car at around 20K
Sweet thanks man! I've been watching some of your newer videos and found it funny; the '17 I just got was traded in by my one of the Master techs at my dealership for a white Type R just like yours.
Si won't have awd, and the si is also using the same engine as the other turbo civics, so with a tune, the difference shouldn't be too bad (time will tell).
did you really say train? no.. just no... you dont need a training to actually drive a manual. its easy, just practice and get your own feel. thats it. not training.
I drive manual in LA. It's really hard to learn manual without proper training. I got a few lessons first before started practicing on my own. I can personal say learning from videos would be a terrible idea vs having someone there with you telling you what to do, when to do it, and whatever questions you might have answered there.
chocoboblue99 i actually learned how to drive a stick based off a RUclips video. i learned on a 2015 Civic Si coupe. i am fairly good and I drove it around a parking lot but havent driven on a road yet. i really love stickshift and I am contemplating buying one very soon. just driving on the road concerns me especially with people who stop abruptly on the road. can you provide any tips?
People stopping abruptly on the road shouldn't be too much of a concern to you because you're driving stick. People with auto can follow way closer and tailgate, but you shouldn't. If you driving stick, you should keep a even greater gap between you and the car ahead of you. A wider gap, also means you have more time to change gears. (downshift, upshift, whatever) Also, if you do have to stop abruptly, keep in mind that you have MORE braking force with the clutch engage than disengage. This is because the engine is also helping your car slow down with the brakes. So, when you see you have to BRAKE HARD, you just hit the brakes hard, then just before the car stalls out that's when you slam in the clutch too. I don't know why movies always show people slamming both clutch and brake pedals together when they have to brake hard. Looks cool on film, but that's where a video would be telling everyone the wrong advise.
Desiderio Matias the Type R is on its way to the US, it'll be this summer some time. should be 300 plus horsepower, great handling, great big wing, it'll be quite nice.
Great review! was just wondering if you test drove or driven an ex or exl? Just seeing if you kinda wanted some of the features those trims have, I was thinking of getting the ext sedan, but after seeing your reviews I'm starting to really like your car instead. Also could you do a video of your lighting kit if you have it installed?
Hey there, I test drove the LX manual, the Sport in CVT and the EX-L in CVT, and the only feature I would have liked from the EX-L are the leather seats and the keyless entry and start. The Radio was not great, touchscreen gets nice and smudged up rather quickly, and from what I have been reading on the forums, the touchscreen radio tends to be quite glitchy. I'll definitely do a review of the lighting kit I had installed on the car, post it up this weekend!
FlyinGato I kinda figured the touch screen would get glitchy at times, and I also would miss the push to star feature too and the twitter speakers on the doors as well. Also wondering what kind of cell phone mount you have? Thanks for the reply, wanted to get honest feedback from an actual owner and not some journalist and also looking forward to your lighting kit video.
Happy to help! Cell phone mount is the i Ottie, works very well in this car. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017HME9DC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What would you recommend when someone gets a first car after only driving rentals, put on a few years of driving experience first on a Civic Sport Plus and then maybe get an R with some losses or go directly with the R and just drive it "slow" but have less losses?
Are you experiencing problem with your smart entry? Like when you are away for a long period of time, you can't unlock it with just by hand. But if you lock it and open it right away, it unlocks. Also, when you start the car and you go out to open the hatch, it wont open.
Hey bud, I've read about Civic owners having this problem, I think some keyless entry systems have bugs that need to be worked out. On my car, since I don't have that system, I don't have that problem. I have the "old fashioned" remote unlock plus key (standard on the LX and Sport).
FlyinGato I see. This is why i prefer keys over push start/smart entry or whatever. Less problem. And it kinda sucks I cant open the hatch while the engine is running. I had to turn it off to open it. I dont get that idea
I test drove the Mazda 3 2.5, and while that felt quite sporty, this Civic with the turbo motor has more torque and, if you get the sport package, feels more responsive.
I love my '15 sedan, but the lease is up in a year and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to keep it or lease a new one. I like the '17 hatch sport, but there are a handful of little things I don't like that are making the decision difficult.
FlyinGato Little things like the fake honeycomb grills, the feel of the cloth, and the feel of the buttons on the wheel and dash (they feel cheap and clicky, imo). Stuff like that. Only thing I dislike about my sedan is the CVT. So I need to weigh a bunch of little things against one big thing. At least I still have time to think.
Well, you can always get the stick shift turbo sedan, if you don't mind not having a hatchback. I personally love the hatch, but that's a choice you can make.
FlyinGato I generally love the aesthetics of the Sport hatch, and I really want the turbo/manual combo. I've also recently fallen in love with hatchbacks after my brother bought a Chevy haych that has HUGE cargo space lol. Sedan would have the same cloth and cheap plastic.
Fair enough, if I were you I would just get the hatchback sport, I think the buttons are pretty good quality. The cloth seats are ok, the material is not the greatest but it'll do for a while.
Hey FG I am having a hard time finding a sport manual, can you tell me about the ordering process and did you pay more for ordering? trucar says a car like these should go for a lil over 20k, was that your experience? Nice video you convinced me.
Hey Fernando, I used Autotrader to look for new car inventory near me, I picked the trim and color, and transmission, and found 5 dealers, and asked each one for the best price. Then, I pit the lowest three against each other to get the lowest price. I would be happy to get any offer lower than 21K before taxes.
Found one just like yours and bought it, so far its a lot of fun, and so much car for the money. Once i get a few more miles I will max the rpms and push it hard, see if I can get the tires to chirp between first and second. You take care.
I love it so far, back side view is kinda like an average girlfriend that gets prettier with time, lol. I saw one driving away from me this morning and it kinda looked exotic, ok it looks very sporty....Handling is awesome, but that may be how i feel it coming from an old accord. Considered Mazda 3 but the turbo the out there looks the wheels and stick shift make this car a lot more fun.
Hey Flying Gato, I had an s2000 for a long time, and needed a bigger car after I ditched the single life, room for a dog that stuff. They refused to put or order me a car at that trim with a manual transmission. I really miss driving manual. I didnt get the sport due it only being a small body kit and 5 more hp? with a tune and exhaust do you think we non sport owners could unlock extra hp. I wonder if it would even be worth swapping someones manual transmission.
it's a real shame Honda doesn't allow for ordering specific cars, I think a lot of people looking for manuals are getting the runaround, and this just should not be the case when spending 20 grand on something! Anyway, don't fret the extra power, I honestly think it's just on paper, or at most, possibly a small software tweak in the ECU. If you use premium gas, you should be feeling the same power I feel in my sport, but without the manual, the rubberband transmission will be sapping the fun along the way.
+RightDrive I'm used to NA cars, I notice turbo lag
As long as insurance isn’t too much I’ll be scooping a 2019 within the next 2 months!
Awesome! You'll love it
In my opinion, I love the rev hang, I think it sounds amazing when you hit 6k, and Instead of shifting, just let off the gas and it rev hangs for 5 or so seconds, and turbo lag isn't good for performance, but the thrill of getting a sudden rush at a certain rpm is what gives you a smile when you drive :)
I don't like electronic parking breaks either. Not a bit
It's one of the best cars you can buy for around 20k, enjoy my friend!
Oh I know, I have a 335d, carbon build up can definitely be an issue, so a catch can is a must. I'll be looking into one soon.
Thanks for the review man.
happy to help!
Hondata and K Tuner REALLY help Rev Hang and Turbo lag making it a brand new car
Lol
@@Hboogie182 I agree but you lost me at activr exhaust lol
Thanks for not flipping out about the hatch junk cover I don't know why people love that.
yea, it's just a cover, I don't even use it.... I think it's because, if you're part of the press release, Honda made a big deal out of it, so the reviewers made it a big deal too. I mean, it's a great design, but I expect nothing less from Honda, so it gets a big "meh" from me haha.
You just sold the car to me. thanks for your honest review .
It's an awesome car, happy to help!
Just bought mine today. I'm so stoked on it
it's such a great car!
Hondata's tuning solution will be able to fix the rev hang and give you a lot better drivability. Plus, you'll be able to eek out a bunch of power.
Yup, Ktuner/Hondata and a lighter flywheel gives you a great car
Man, I watch this video almost daily. Waiting for mine to come in. Exact same specs, color combo as yours. Dude at the dealer said that by years end there will only be like 9 white sport manuals in America.
Oh wow, that's really cool to know! We're one of 9 so far, that's more exclusive than most lambos and ferraris! You're going to love this car.
Just got mine this weekend. Ended up getting lunar silver. There were only 4 total in TExas and no white :(
That's alright, did you get it in manual? What do you think of the car so far?
I am loving it. It is my 4th hatch. I have had 1989. 1996, and 2004 Si. Definitely my favorite so far! MPG is great too.
Oh man, I had a 1990 civic wagon! it was my first car, I'm so happy to be back in a 4 door hatchback again.
Just got a 2018 model of this today in all black, with the six speed. I must say... I'm in love already.
Awesome! You're going to love it, I miss my white orchid pearl hatch
Already love it, man! Traded in my 2012 Accord LX for it. I had some great memories in that basic car and was a bit sad to see it stripped of the license plates at the dealership. I'm hoping the next owner treats it well. Think I'll be a loyal Honda driver for a very long time!
I just got this car and I love it. Also got a great deal on it.
It's an awesome choice.
What did u pay?
Ironically this civic face look generation is the best selling civic ever in the world. It’s more aggressive and sporty looking compare to previous generations and the new models that starts in 2022.
The best review so far! Thank you! The others simply don't know how to drive hondas
Thanks! I am releasing a follow up tomorrow, so don't forget to subscribe!
Lol
There's just one thing I notice that makes it quirky that I don't think the Si has.
I would consider that with bulbs that are about equal brightness to the OEM LEDs, without bring illegal, it excessively bright and blinding
So much other things you can customize and upgrade, little by little, but looks are subjective, and all the complainers just don't get the fact that the Sport Hatchback was specifically equipt as is like ok'd school.petfirmsnce cars of ok'd to have all the sport looks and performance, and be affordable.
The tires would also be an additional charge
I love the factiryb28" wheels, and the optional wheels are another nice option, but so expensive.
Nice to see someone enjoying driving their car!
Always do, can't wait to bring out my S2000 soon
At last, a review where the car gets driven properly. Good Review.
Thanks for the kind words! I try to have fun with my cars!
Good stuff!!
thanks! It's all in the attention to detail
Definitely agree, the only car that I was close to getting instead of this is the Focus ST, but I still prefer the new Civic, it's such a good value.
Great review just ordered mine can’t wait
Very nice and cool ride, Gato! I also love the white and black color scheme. Thankfully they blacked out the window trim chrome. Have fun and enjoy it!
Thanks! I love the black and white theme of the car!
That third one is very interesting. I'm almost certain most of it is emissions related
Roundabouts are great. Beats the hell out of 4 way stops.
oh I love roundabouts, don't get me wrong, it's just that people here can't seem to know how to use them, so you end up having to use extreme caution to go through them.
You can turn that stripe off if you want go to your settings. It's not permanent
Let me give it a try.
Great video rev hang is due to double mass wheel in the clutch
Rev hang also helps with quick gear changes staying in high revs keeping it in the power range...
Great review. Thanks. You’re fair in your assessments
Looks sharp! I love those exhaust tips. I have the EX-T manual and it was a really tough choice between that and the Sport.
Thanks! maybe we should a hatch vs sedan comparison video...
Haha that would be sweet
danm civic upping their game! Very sporty looking car
In person it looks even better.
I'm getting One On January, 2018... Thanks bro
Congrats!
If you can swing it, the type R is going to be an awesome car. I just don't really need the power, as I have two other performance cars.
you have the same interior setup with ivory/black im not a fan of the interior then again I bought mine used during the height of the pandemic in 2020 only paid $16k with 27k on the odometer. except mine has CVT. its better than nissan's crap. this car wasn't planned for me to buy. I had a incident with my 8th gen EX sedan in which my insurance declared it totaled at 177k. my timing chain ripped and oil pan busted. but now that car is in Puerto Rico. I told them to cut me a check and i''ll get something else I still have it and going strong at 110k on the odometer just do your regular maitenance and you're good to go
great takes and views on this car, I'm having a hard time deciding if I should trade in my civic coupe, lol maybe next year :D but im linking this car more and more, HARD to find a manual thou!
love the hatch, though the Civic Si makes a good case for itself as well
i hear ya! i LOVE the interior of the Si, and not liking the dashboard of the hatch but regardless keep these vids coming man.
great video, you actually convinced me to learn manual when you took the car for a drive.
MrAnonymule I like accords too, I wish they made a 6cyl wagon 4 door with a manual, I'd have gotten that
White Orchid Pearl. It sounds so exotic as compared to just White. The car is white...period..
The 2017 civic EX-T 6 Speed is they way to go
Unfortunately, the hatch doesn't come in that trim, only the sport model and LX model have the 6 speed manual, at least for now. I also think the hatch has a good value proposition, with it's useful hatch area, and in my opinion, better styling as well. I also really don't like the touchscreen in these Civics, they look nice when brand new, but look nasty after some time with smudges. I also prefer the analogue gauges vs the digital one in the EX-T, not a fan of the blue coloring, and it does wash out a bit when the sun hits it.
well i understand, but the EX-T 2017 civic has a lot more options and at the dyno it shows 190HP and 190fpt, and i like the sunroof, the engine start button the keyless entry the heated seats, and the lane watch, The hatch is nice i looked at that one first but than i went for the 2017 ex-t 6 speed and its really nice,
White Orchid Pearl
Nice, the hatch has the same engine, and the power is definitely nice. If you want the options and the manual, the sedan is a great choice. White Orchid Pearl (WOP) is the best color in my opinion.
no matter... the displacement makes the civic a slow POS
that little turbo makes it pretty sporty, I think. I mean, my 335d keeps up with a 2012 carrera S, so I know what real power is, and the Civic is pretty good.
Amazing car review, I learned a lot about the Civic Sport. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words!
I wish i had these empty roads and desert parking lots around to play with my car a bit more. I have to drive 1 hour to find a place like that. Nice drive!
Thanks! I'll keep doing these if people keep enjoying them.
Hey! Great review, have you had any trouble with the oil dilution problem hitting some of those 1.5L turbos? Thanks!
all the new Civics look really nice. I personally like the civic sedan models.. I think the back looks better then the Hatchback. BUt the TYpe R looks fucking badass. I already bought a new civic ex-t not long ago or I would get the TYpe R in a heartbeat
Totally agree on the LED lights. They look like crushed broken glass. Not a fan.
Wish they did the fenders and door seals on the sedan sport.
Grew up in the burg man. Glad to see someone making videos from my home town. I drive a 2015 Audi A4. Hope to see you at cars and coffee, Cheers!
I'll hopefully be there in June!
I really like this car. Great review!
Thanks! it was one of my early reviews, glad everyone liked it!
That rev hang would drive me nuts. Honestly I don't know how a person can live with that. Other than that, it does look fun.
Brian Bailey it's only really annoying when you're trying to drive quickly, but I'll be tuning that out soon enough
The intro song is called nothing lasts forever by Feki, in case anyone is wondering.
I can’t wait to get one
The model sold in Australia is made in Thailand the U.S models are NOT made in Thailand, I think U.S or Canada, Manufacturers have factories all over the world nowadays. Regards Lindsay.
all hatchbacks are manufactured in Swindon, UK for global export. The sedans and coupes are manufactured around the world.
The Coupe is Actually an HCM1 (Alliston ON Canada) exclusive, as well as the Civic Si.
Looks like a crossover. Active grill shutters? A crv and a volster had a baby😎
Omg crazy high frequency playing in your background in the beginning
Sorry about that, I'm buying new equipment in the coming weeks to rectify that issue. I was using a Drift HD Ghost, a camera released 5 years ago, and I didn't notice the problem until I posted it on youtube.
The proportion looks funny for a hatch. Maybe need spoiler like the euro civic type-R
Hard to find the 6spd manuals. Mine comes in next week! Love the videos!
Thanks bud! These are great cars, you'll love it.
Good luck with your beautiful car. I really want the Hatch in Sonic Gray but the 6 speed turbo Hatch lacks a lot of the amenities I expect in a sporty car. Looks like the Coupe for me. But, man, do I really love the look of the Hatch.
If you can do without the utility, the coupe is definitely a great choice
You can turn off that green/white strip, my accord had it too, its somewhere in the settings
leutrim topalli I tried to buy realized you need to have the EX and up to be able to do so
What a great review!!
Good review but imo the wide angle lens you use makes everything look stretched out. It's kinda hard to see the details
I agree, I'll be doing more videos with a new camera I started using, no more wide angle.
Good review no bull cheers..
@FlyinGato
Nice review, congratulations. I drive a Bmw 420d GC but think of getting a civic Type R. I'm in Europe. I tested shortly the 9'th get Type R. I'll wait for the new Type R then decide. Until then I'm really interested how your Civic feels compared to your Bmw E90:
- body roll on different speeds, fast changing the direction.
Despite this 4 series offering a great package (looks, better handling than average, comfort, economy) I want a more thrilling car.
drive around for a bit warm the tires and engine.. turn traction control off, power shift into (2 if brave) 3 and 4
I've done that a number of times already, it's quite a fun car.
I got same car and color lol love it get compliments all the time
I know, me too!
Good review. Your video is prompting me to get the Sport model although I have been thinking of waiting for the Type R. After watching your video, I am thinking about the problems I might have with the Type R in terms of paying a premium for the vehicle and the likely speeding tickets I will incur up here in Canada.
it's a really tough choice, even for me.
Lol people keep saying that. Premium is recommended not required people. Premium for higher horsepower
Hey FlyingGato, what a beautiful car! I got the same one but with black interior and it's the LX model. Do you know if they sale the blacked out weather strips for this car? The ones that are found on the sport model. Thanks.
thanks! There's nothing reputable out yet for that, but if you want an easy fix, look into plati-dip, really easy to do.
Thank you for the very useful video, I just got my hatchback sport 2018 last month and trying to find a way to add a remote start. I'm living in NYC and winter is cold, so I need a remote start. How much will it usually cost to add a remote start?
Glad you enjoyed it
brake hold only works if your seat belt is on.
I definitely recommend the manual on this car, though, definitely transforms it to a sporty car.
thank you for your advice. Wish you have more awesome videos!
Thanks again bud, more coming soon!
No, the clutch is super light, shifter is very short throws also....
Decent?
I can tell the upgraded speakers are LOUD in the Sport Touring.
what is your opinion on the honda, fit?
Haha! Great minds think alike! You're going to love your hatch, I miss mine
I'm happy with my sport, but the si version obviously will murder it... hope it has awd. I will upgrade if it does.
Si won't have awd, and the si is also using the same engine as the other turbo civics, so with a tune, the difference shouldn't be too bad (time will tell).
Nice job, subscribed. Looks like that strip will mostly be white in your case. Ever take a look at the Elantra sport?
I did take a look at it actually, really nice, but the elantra sport with the 200hp engine doesn't come in hatch form. Thanks for the kind words!
why not do a "how to drive a manual" video? i would like to see your perspective.
jesussaves13 you Americans and your manual learning... hahah just so funny.
did you really say train? no.. just no... you dont need a training to actually drive a manual. its easy, just practice and get your own feel. thats it. not training.
(downshift, upshift, whatever)
Also, if you do have to stop abruptly, keep in mind that you have MORE braking force with the clutch engage than disengage.
Good review... what about a type R? Is it coming to the Us? Any info will be appreciated...
Good video bud, thanks!
Thanks for the kind words!
What would you recommend when someone gets a first car after only driving rentals, put on a few years of driving experience first on a Civic Sport Plus and then maybe get an R with some losses or go directly with the R and just drive it "slow" but have less losses?
I've never driven manual before, someone is selling a pearl blue hatch for $14k. I've been wanting a hatch.
Buy it
It does look good to me.
I like it!
Oh wow, I definitely have not had that problem, I can basically do whatever I want with the doors of the car.
seems just as quick as my 13 si as far as I can tell from the vid. I like it. Not getting rid of my si tho ;)
Actually, a lot of people are reporting that it's quicker than the Si, but the Si is still quite a nice car.
really? hmm interesting. either way it looks like a great car. congrats and nice vid my man
thanks!
bandkaih yes, videos on RUclips.
+RogueBRZ thanks!
Mazda 3 attracts me so much. I wonder which one is sportier.
I test drove the Mazda 3 2.5, and while that felt quite sporty, this Civic with the turbo motor has more torque and, if you get the sport package, feels more responsive.
How about the 2.0 Vtec? Does it also have rev hang?
I love my '15 sedan, but the lease is up in a year and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to keep it or lease a new one. I like the '17 hatch sport, but there are a handful of little things I don't like that are making the decision difficult.
What don't you like about it?
The cloth seats are ok, the material is not the greatest but it'll do for a while.
solid review bruh
thanks!
Man no hand ebrake? Oh well at least there's a manual/turbo option now.
there's one for sedan as well
stupid question, do you think putting regular gas instead of the recommended premium would a problem for the short and long run?
I don't think so, there's really no reason, but only time will tell to be honest.
rev hang is irritating for the first few months, you'll adjust to it.
We shall see. It's only really annoying when trying to drive quickly, otherwise it's fine.
Thanks for the advice, just found some, not my color but will keep checking.
Found one just like yours and bought it, so far its a lot of fun, and so much car for the money. Once i get a few more miles I will max the rpms and push it hard, see if I can get the tires to chirp between first and second. You take care.
+Fernando Amador tires definitely chirp if you drive aggressively. I think it's one of the best cars to get for the money
