It’s 1967, and I can distinctly remember coming home from school and watching this on WPHL channel 17 out of Philadelphia. This along with a block of cartoons such as: Marine Boy Gigantor Eighth Man Astro Boy Speed Racer So many great cartoons back in those days, and sadly today, many cartoons I’ve come across are just flat out WEIRD. 😮
I'm off the charts late as I didn't have a youtube channel when I first heard this, but R.I.P the owner of this channel (craig anderson). He was the biggest fan of this show.
When I was a kid and visited my family in Washington D.C During the Summer I remembered watching this cartoon in the 1970's . It really brings back memories of my childhood.
Kimba, Prince Planet, Gigantor.... my childhood in a nutshell. We played so many games, as very young kids, based on these, our favourite shows. Here in 1960’s Australia!
Kimba was one of my favorite things as a child. Astroboy first and Kimba a close second...it made being a kid in the 60s a little better, I think. As an only child, I found childhood to be a lonely condition, but great imaginative shows, with heart, made a real difference and made me love animals and look for kindness in the world. My parents and grandparents were good to me, but I found my young peer group rather heartless...books and great cartoons gave me somewhere to go, emotionally.
I used to watch this as a child in the 70s. I have never made the connection to the Lion King until now. Who sang along to the song? I remember the words
Before I became big on anime in general, I remember as a kid watching these localized versions thinking "boy, some shows look so different from stuff like Warner Bros & Hanna-Barbera shows!" And THEN along came "Star Blazers", which changed everything for me. Yep, it WAS edited for the more extreme scenes of violence & sexuality, but "Blazers" did show characters dying & there was even bits of "fan service" that slipped through S&P...🙃. When I finally got to see the whole run of "Jungle Emperor Leo", I was amazed!
well ACTUALLY the lion king is basically one reenactment of Hamlet, and the sequel being a recreation of Romeo, and Juliet. Disney didn't copy the plot at all, just the small little lion Simba. If you want to blame Disney of copying something, it's the 1500s to 1600s playwrights of shakespeare, even then, he just brought the tale in african animal kingdom form, to appeal to kids.
Anubis game Plot-wise there are differences. But there are multiple scenes that are identical visually. Also both movies have a father-son lion, an evil sibling, evil hyena henchman, a warthog, a meerkat, a bird with a big beak (actual species is escaping me...), etc. In fact Matthew Broderick (voice of older simba) thought he was doing an American remake of Kimba... If you're going to do a remake of Hamlet (with elements of Moses and Joseph) then pick different animals and a different setting and don't borrow shots from other cartoons. Disney knew the creator of Kimba and I imagine his animators, who were adults in 1995, had seen Kimba at some point.
K Batt You do realize that Walt was dead before the lion king right? This was before the internet so there's a good chance that they didn't know about Kimba. The movie was about Lions so of course the animals would be the same. There is an evil sibling because it based off of hamlet.
it was popular cartoon series on TV in my country back in 60s. it was my childhood favorite. when Lion King was first launched with Simba character, I was initially thought it was Kimba but then I heard his father's name Mufasa. in the movie, Kimba didnt have father anymore.
Edited 6/4/22. I was born in 1961 and watched kimba on tv i forgot what channel it was on this would have been a great addition to cartoon network's original adult swim lineup.
OMG YES I AGREE. That is how i feel right now, and the undertones of orientalism and patriarchy make me so nauses. Like the white lion bringing human civilized culture to Africa- dafuq is that? Honest movie trailers just killed my fantasy.
Corpsman2326 hahaah man, that was a really mean thing to say. Spread love not hate. I hope you can get your life together enough so you don't have to attack strangers to feel better about yourself. God bless man. For the record, there is a lot to be said about the influence of this cartoon- every film, cartoon or sitcom has a meaning.

WOW! I haven't seen Kimba since the mid-70's on KBHK-44 TV in
San Francisco at 4pm. LOL I couldn't wait to get home from school to see it.
Even named my favorite cat KIMBA!
thank you RUclips!
It’s 1967, and I can distinctly remember coming home from school and watching this on WPHL channel 17 out of Philadelphia.
This along with a block of cartoons such as:
Marine Boy
Gigantor
Eighth Man
Astro Boy
Speed Racer
So many great cartoons back in those days, and sadly today, many cartoons I’ve come across are just flat out WEIRD. 😮
I'm off the charts late as I didn't have a youtube channel when I first heard this, but R.I.P the owner of this channel (craig anderson). He was the biggest fan of this show.
Wow! This brings back memories, holy cow. Thank you so much for posting this.
No doubt Kimba is the reason why i love cats so much today I also have a black and white reverse tuxedo that I call Pepper.😸
The memories from the 1960s. I feel my heart doing crazy things and the feel of moisture in my eyes. The wonderful good old days.
This used to be on tv in the 70s.
still up on the 80s..watched it...
Even earlier. I watched it when I came home for lunch in elementary school in the late 60's.
wow, can you guys tell me if there is a restored version of toons like this one?
It started airing around 1966-67. My grandmother used to collect TV Guide (yes) and it was in the listings back then.
Lion king rip this off
SteelWingsStudios Lion King also rips of Macbeth
This cartoon preceded The Lion King by about 30 years.
The thing is why won't Disney admit they copied it? It's 100% obvious they got inspired from this film to say the least.
To be fair they atleast they made made lion king 5x better and more memorable
Plus it could've been a coincidence. I doubt any of the writers, animators, etc. have heard or even seen this show
I remember watching this when I was younger! I used to love this show :)
Man this use to be one of my all time favorite toons. What a flash back.lol
Anime
@@erennotmyyeager4558 during its run on the Saturday line ups, it was considered a Cartoon with the English voice overs
Anime fans need to watch Tezuka nowadays.
I totally agree.
When you grew up in the 90's watching this - we had the VHS tapes! 🥰
My dog who passed away at 16 years of age last year...was also named Kimba. Great name for a pet. Kimba the White Lion rules.
Kimba actually knows how to fight 😳😳
Seriously he fought an elephant. He would rape Simba if they ever met.
This is THE original. Way before Disney copied it. Maybe thats why most of you havent heard this version.
well ACTUALLY the lion king is basically one reenactment of Hamlet, and the sequel being a recreation of Romeo, and Juliet.
@@uniliv582 they definitely drew inspiration from a lot of scenes
i honestly use to watch this all the time...... i truley loved it 😂♥️
Edited 6/4/22. I was born in 1961 and watched kimba on tv i forgot what channel it was on this would have been a great addition to cartoon network's original adult swim lineup.
I had this Siamese cat who looked a lot like Kimba and that was his nickname
lucky you
The cat's actual name was Leroy; my sister nicknamed him Kimba
You have a great cat Cheryl.
I had my Leroy for eight years and I miss him
I did too!
My whole life was a lie!
OMG YES I AGREE. That is how i feel right now, and the undertones of orientalism and patriarchy make me so nauses. Like the white lion bringing human civilized culture to Africa- dafuq is that? Honest movie trailers just killed my fantasy.
Raevin Boyd i ment in the sense of connection it has with lion king. This was the predecessor.
Raevin Boyd What the hell is wrong with you? its a freakin cartoon! wow, I guess its true. You can't fix stupid.
