Cold weather backpacking and hammock camping in Central Pennsylvania's Tiadaghton State Forest.
For this adventure, I decided to grab my tarp and hammock and hike into the woods with not much of a plan other than to do some random exploration, find a suitable basecamp, and maybe have a little fun with some campfire cooking.
Instead of relying on dehydrated backpacking foods as I usually do, I packed in a bunch of "real" food and a frying pan with the intention of skipping the backpacking stove and cooking exclusively on a good ol' open campfire.
For an easier read and more info, check out my full blog post here:
www.sintax77.c...
My backpacking load-out for this trip was relatively lightweight and minimal, but I did spend a few extra pounds on some fun camping items like a hatchet, cooking gear, and some cold weather clothing to deal with the forecasted 20° temperatures at night.
In addition to the camp food, I'll give you a full look at the items that I pack in on a typical colder weather backpacking trip as well as my go-to tarp and hammock camping setup.
While I didn't really use an official trailhead for this trip, I did stumble upon Pennsylvania's orange blazed Mid-State trail before going off trail to look for my campsite for the night. The nearest town was Waterville, PA, which does have a very nice general store and parking for anyone interested in doing a proper backpacking loop with Pine Creek as the center piece. It's an awesome area for fishing, hiking and backpacking.
In my case, I ended up on the upper ridges of gorge instead of down along the creek where I usually go, but it did make for a memorable experience somewhere deep in the woods of Pennsylvania...

Thank you Shawn 👍 Always great to hear from you, appreciate you my friend 👊Stay safe and take care out there🙏
Great hiking backpack video and a bonus that you visited the cabin. TC.
Always good to see your videos! Thanks for sharing the cabin visit as well.
With my age and bad knee this is the kind of camping I do all over West Virginia. Great job on the video, as always.
Michael Broyer
The knees.
Know exactly where that country store is. And yes, middle of no where. Love that area!
This may not have been a high mile hike, but I really enjoyed the change of pace and the teaching moments you put in.
Happy to hear that! I figured those might be a good opportunity to take a closer look at what I carry into the woods in my backpack for trips like this. It's actually been a little while since I've done that. Happy trails!
Hard work felling trees without a chainsaw. You will have an abundance of good firewood for quite some time to come. Great to see you out and about again .. miss your vids. Bushyboy Oz.
Thanks for sharing the experience. Loved the tree fell humor.
Great video Shawn. I love your dads and your videos. Keep them coming. Tadder Buck.
Thanks, Tadder! Glad you're enjoying them. I've been a bit behind on releasing vids lately, but I'm working on editing up the next backpacking vid right now as we speak :)
Brilliant videos.
Big fan here from England.
If you're ever over this side of the pond you're all very welcome in Bristol.
Be great to go on a hike sometime.
Keep up the awesome adventures 😊
Love your camp trips videos! How are Sarah and Denali Miss seeing them ! Hope everyone is great 😊
They're doing good! Hopefully I'll get them out on an upcoming backpacking trip vid in the future :)
Always love your camping trips to the bush see where you go what gear you have what your cooking up, always interesting.
Nice trip! I have anxiety if my gas gets down to a quarter of a tank. 😂
cool video mate....respect for getting out and about and bringing us with you.
Thanks, Andy. Happy to have you along for the adventure! :)
Love, love love this type of camping. Primative, good food, low mile, high enjoyment factor. Thanks for taking us along!
I always hate waiting so long on your vids but they are awesome to watch as always
How are you doing sintax77. I just want to say that you make the coolest backpacking camping videos. I really enjoy watching your channel! I’m in San Antonio, Texas. God Bless you and your family sir!
Another awesome video! Love to see the cabin.
That stove brand name is called "Pocket Rocket". Me and my kids all have the same one. Could never forget the mane of them! My wife was wondering what heck I purchased on Amazon one year. Lol, good times.
Was watching your video desert backpacking in Arizona. About 51 minutes when she was on top of ledge and you were down below it looked like a door carved into the mountain
Wow,very cool,I saw a Baltimore Oriole flying past.👍
I sure enjoy your videos! Thanks so much.
Enjoyed that 👍Your videos are a rare treat, a must watch. Look forward to the next.
Did the same scenario…. Did one night in the hammy, then meandered around, then went to my cabin! I struggle with multi nights in a single camp site solo, just get bored later in the day.
great to see you in the woods again, Sintax77
Pack explosion!!! Always look for your vids. Really enjoy them.
"Believe it or not this is a backpacking video" I would be slightly disappointed if it wasnt. A radio video would be cool
It's nice to have hiking trails near the camp. You can enjoy backpacking and then relaxing at the hunting camp after a trip.👍
It's does make for a pretty nice combo up there :)
good move with the heat diffuser; good use with twig stoves for simmering.
Nice hiking video with a little cabin action. 👍
Glizzys on the Hiking trip? My man.
Been waiting for you to upload new video, but anyways I love watching your videos while taking a coffee. All love here from Philippines!
Thanks, James! Enjoy the coffee!
In the early Sintax days, I would get an alert as soon as new video was released. Now, I have to initiate a search to find out if there is a new video. Once again, I found out that a new video dropped weeks ago. What gives RUclips?
Great video! Could you do more "Jeep camping" trips? May not be for most of your viewers but I think some would like them.
L-lysine for the lip, bit tongue, mouth uclers, etc. Nice chill time outside 👍
Hi from mike in LA CA. its nice to see your videos. I would have just stayed and camped there a second night to.
So funny you ended up there. I lived in middle of Tioga Forest near Leetonia for 13 years. It was my grandfather’s place so up there my whole life just recently moved to Tennessee. Did Mid State trail, West Rim Trail as well as just walking through the woods. Everyone in Slate Run and Cedar Run know me. I miss it terribly.
That's awesome! It really is a great area up there with a ton of outdoor opportunities.
@@sintax77 definitely I could walk out my door and hike where there was no one.
Yer cabin rocks... make me miss my family cabins.. they got burnt up in that Lassen fire a decade ago.
I just went and looked that wildfire up. That's a bummer, man. I'm sorry to hear that.
You are blessed and I enjoyed this video very much.
Supposed to be 93-99 the next three days. This video cools things down 😂
Hotdogs! 🌭
Hell yeah
Enjoyed the video love your cabin
Always great to see a syntax post. Have you ever had a spooky or weird encounter during your treks.
Crazy, I was just wondering what my next Bluetooth headset would be. Bone-conductivity has got to be the best solution for us hiking enthusiasts. 👍🏼Sintaxx77, what boots you got there?
Dude always great to see you outdoors. The hot dogs idk about that shit though.
Livin' on the edge... driving with no gas, lol Are you concerned cutting the trees on that slope will give you a better chance of landslide? Thanks for sharing your adventure. Take care, be well
I like the cut of your jib, my kind of adventure where you say f*** it and roll with it
Hi Shawn. The snow was a surprise to me. Do you mean your Dad when you say the Chairman, I'm guessing? I guess I may have missed the story of the little ducky on the dashboard. No worries, if it's personal. You picked another nice area to camp, again. I just so happened to look to my right while in the parking lot I was in and a White Denali pulled up next to my vehicle. Hope Denali is doing well.
The chairman is the jokester of the bunch (not Shawn's dad)...The Chairman also shows some "cheeky" behavior at times...lol
First time being first …. Was waiting for a video , perfect timing
Nailed it! Thanks for watching - hope you enjoy the vid :)
@@sintax77 lol … I was almost ready for bed , but when I saw the video drop - I knew I was gonna be up for another hour or so ! Always enjoy the videos pal
I agree with the other commenters so far. It is really nice to see you out and about, posting video again. I am limited in my hiking ability and only car camp now, I enjoy living a little extra through your adventures.
Man I need more of this in my life..
I have been waiting and checking his channel. I was up too late already, saved it for today.
Just an FYI.. The Amazon link for the black open rock pro's links to the silver ones also. Great video! (so far... I'm only up to the sponsors break) I love an adventure, and I've been stuck inside since ,,,forever... so, thanks!
Thanks, I'll check that out. Hope you can get back out there soon!
Why stuck inside?
Ha! I just watched TGBDTU last night. Gotta get you a copy of One Upon a Time in the West.
Another good Sergio pick! I rented that years ago when Netflix actually mailed you real DVD's, haha. I'll have to keep my eyes out for a used copy to bring up to the cabin for a re-watch :)
What hammock/tarp do you have here? Tried the links but went down a rabbit hole and gave up 😅
Good videos keep up the great work!
The hammock is a Dutchware Half-wit and the tarp is a 12' Hammock Gear Dyneema
dutchwaregear.com/product/half-wit-hammock-complete/#fabric-and-color
hammockgear.com/dyneema-fiber-hex-tarp/
I sure hope that was a Cheeseburger pizza to end the hike!😂
A couple oxy 80's,a few packs of cigs for starters.
This video was uploaded just what a day ago.....maybe I missed when you filmed it. I didn't know Penn. got snow in late may. Anyway, thanks for posting brother
This is a bit weird but when I lay in my hammock i watch syntax. Watching hiking videos when hiking
Nice trip!
Which Casio Watch does SinTax 77 use? I'd like to get one.
Love McConnels. My cabin is in cammal pa
Oh wow... Been a minute!
You had the same problem buck season when camp cook got a doe lol I own a jeep I know the struggle
Hey there…🙂 I have a long list of subs but no one gives Me a smile more than You. Geez it’s great to see You. I like hearing You say, “Good Morning, Everyone.” All wrapped-up in the hammock. Hope You guys had fun chopping those trees down. It’s great to enjoy some quality time at the cabin, eh? Bet You had a busy tax season. Please come back soon. 🌲🏡🌳🎒🌿
Thanks, Ruth. Glad you're enjoying the vids. We've still got some work to do in the trees though :)
@@sintax77 Bought a t-shirt. It’s gonna be fun wearing it around this Summer. 😅
It’s been awhile. Hope You’re okay and smiling. Happy Trails and Full-Blown Sails. Waiting for another great video. Peace.
@sintax77 - Are GPS tracks coming for this trip? If not, can you give the name of the road that intersects with the MST?
What is that radio/scanner? Where can I buy one. Thx love the channel
It's an SDS100 digital trunking scanner. It pulls down just about anything that isn't encrypted, but if you're looking for something more entry level to get your feet wet with, I would suggest a $25 Baofeng UV-5R. Load it up with some local frequencies in listen only mode and you'll be good to go.
@@sintax77 thx for the info I really appreciate it👊
Theres alot less bug's near the creek streems streams rivers. Where the water runs faster. Theres even less bug's. Note bugs can hert you an do even animals are hert by bugs "p/n/m "
I guess Rolling Rock isn't a PA beer like it used to be?
Hey thanks Syntax for the watch. Have you ever considered picking up a twig stove of your choosing? I have my favorites but twig stoves are a personal choice. Just wondering. Take care bud. NQU
I've actually had that recommended to me a few times over the years, but I haven't experimented with one yet. I may have to finally give it a try though. Any recommendation for a good one to get started with?
@@sintax77 well…. I like the solo stove lite which is a gasifier stove which is a design based off a stove called the bushbuddy stove. There’s a bit of controversy wrapped up in that which i wont go into. That’s the stove i would recommend for your lightweight trips because you can put your cat can stove in there as well. For car camping I would go for the stainless steel firebox 5”. It’s heavy but an awesome workhorse. I use a little bit of firestarter material for both. Hope this helps.
This helps a lot, thank you!
“Sometimes it’s nice to come out and make a little home in the woods”…..
My thoughts exactly!
“E” doesn’t mean enough…..😂
What land in PA. Is it state land or gamelands, I know gamelands you can only camp 200 feet within the Appalachian trail.
Yeah, with the exception of the Appalachian Trail corridor, you're not permitted to overnight camp at on on PA game lands (the numbered ones). This particular region was PA State Forest though, so good to camp wherever.
Anybody else bummed because he didn't get a cheeseburger? :D 🤣
I've been watching your content shortly after I got back from Afghanistan and at the time I HATED being outside and hiking after spending a year outdoors in the elements. Your channel really helped me get back into backpacking and hiking as a peaceful retreat after watching your solo adventures. Just wanted to say thank you for the awesome work and keep on keeping on 🤘
Yeah buddy
Yeah I just don’t know what it is but food always tastes better camping
I did a little taste testing one year on some dehydrated at home and it was just ok but then I took the same thing backpacking and it was so much better
Super weird vibe in this one. Are you on tweak?
Shaun, what GPS app do you use?
Love your videos :D But maybe not the driving while filming without a seatbelt. Stay safe!
That's not a cheeseburger ;)
Hi again! I appreciate the more explanatory nature of this video. Even as an experienced camper, it's nice to hear this type of info.
BTW - have you gotten your HAM ticket yet? Sunspot cycle is on the upswing again :)
Thanks, Mike! No license yet though. I have to pace myself with the hobbies, haha - but I'm sure it's something I'll visit eventually.
@@sintax77 Understood - ham can be a black hole of $$ and time. What scanner is that, and how do you get local frequencies onto it? I have an old Radio Shack 622, but it's a pain.
It's a SDS100. It's super easy to get local freqs on because it actually has the entire database from radioreference.com loaded on to it. You can just punch in the local zipcode, or in my case, I have a little GPS dongle plugged into it that updates while I drive around. Once I get to the trailhead, it's loaded up and I just use the service filters to decide what to listen to (law, park service, airports, etc)
@@sintax77 I realize this post is a bit old, but curious if you use the scanner just for entertainment to listen to when hiking or if you bring it for safety reasons? I have a BCT 436HP and haven't thought about bringing it hiking and camping. the 436 does similar things for local frequencies, zip code, etc.
What gps app are you using on your phone?
🍕 time?
Are you using a tripod ? Your shots look so easily transitioned from handheld to stationary.
Yeah, it's a little GoPro grip that switches into a small tri-pod, about 18 inches tall or so. The software based auto leveling on the newer GoPro cams help a lot with quickly setting up stationary shots too.
Ok, love the video. Let’s be clear. BUT…hot dogs for dinner…[essentially] hot dogs for “brunch”, and pizza for dinner? Really, Shawn? Sara and I worry about your health. Let’s think about some fiber, veggies, and maybe some whiskey instead of that swill you are drinking. 😂
I've had hot dogs and pizza in the woods and maybe a little whiskey once or twice. 🤣
Fiber and veggies on a backpacking trip? Oh, the Humanity!
HI SINTAX77 👋
QUESTION WHAT SIZE DYNEEMA TARP DO YOU USE MOST OF THE TIME ! 12 ' × 12' OR 11' × 11' ? GORGEOUS AREAS / CAMPSITE ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 GOD BLESS YOU BOTH ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏
GOING ON OUR FIRST CAMPING TRIP 🏕 CAR / TRUCK THIS MONTH IN A LONG TIME / BEEN TAKING CARE OF MY MOM . 1ST TIME AT SAVAGE RIVER STATE FOREST PARK WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY . SEE HOW IT GOES WEATHER WISE & TICKS , ETC ! DO YOU SPRAY YOUR TENT ⛺ / HAMMOCKS ALL OVER WITH PERMETHRIN OR JUST THE SLEEPING PARTS / QUARTERS ? THAT'S IF YOU DO ? JUST WONDERING .
Finally :)
Sometimes the bugs where so bad i had to sleep in the water. If you flote floot well Anker yourself so you don't floot flote away.q"PNM.".
The fans miss you.
What are the pants you are wearing?
They're by Revolution Race - Norwand modle, I believe. They're a heavier fabric, so they can be a bit too warm for summer hiking, but they're great from winter and cooler temp trips.
When you sleep under water to keep the bugs off you you need 2 anchors one where some one can see it an cut it the othe where they cant see it an have a much harder time cutting it an will get you up if the other is cut. This way you won't float off away from your things that should be in site as you sleep in the water."p/n/m."" You may want to put traps on your things an more "pnm.""*"
08/11/2023. Are you alive ? I feel like filing a RUclips missing persons report :)
Jay
Is this a scouting trip for deer ?
Looks like a great place to hang a stand !
Neolithic settlements were high on a ridge facing south.
easy watching, but get a [ pistal ]
or a pickel
It looks like a place that'd be loaded with Ticks.
Speaking of things your wife got for you -- where is Sara?
I typically love your videos and enjoy seeing your view of the outdoors. However, I'm a little disappointed that you washed your pan directly in the river and left a smoldering fire while you hiked away. Water should be taken AWAY from the source for washing and a smoldering fire should NEVER be left unattended. Please be a better example to those who don't know better since you have some influence over the behavior of others who may venture out into the woods. Thanks!
no cheeseburger?! you just lost a subscriber pal! very disappointed. ultimate betrayal
Very cool!
Have you received the business cooperation invitation email from us? We sincerely hope a lot to cooperate with you.
WOW, big NO-NO, washing your pan in the stream. you di not follow Leave No Trace principles.
Should have washed the pan away from the stream and then scatted the wash water.
Ffs go back to your basement
Which GPS app do you use?
I have a subscription to Gaia. It works well, but I actually do most of my planning in Caltopo on desktop and they started doing a pro version with an online map app, so I may switch over to them next. I haven't seen what the price is yet, so thats factor.
