Winter Hammock Camping - Without a Stove!

  • For this late winter backpacking trip, I decided to challenge myself - cooking “real food” using only fire for the duration of my trip. If you know anything about my patience for making fires, you’ll know this will truly be a bit of a challenge. 🙂
For shelter, I went with my minimalist camping hammock and ultralight backpacking tarp set-up. I also utilized a grill grate, a folding saw for harvesting campfire wood, and some extra cold weather clothing layers, as the temps were forecasted to head down to around 15° F or so. There was also a chance of snow, sleet, and even rain, so I brought a full set of rain gear for warmth at camp and keeping dry while hiking.

@sintax77 I love that you did this loop. This is my local/ go-to hike when I want to do an overnight. It is about an hour and 15 from my house. I love seeing other people hike/camp here so that I can relate more to their experience. Would you hike here again? What would you do differently?

Using the same gear doesn’t bother me a bit. If you’re comfortable with it that’s what’s up. Maybe a little gadget here and there would be cool. I’m half way through and digging it. I like how you don’t edit certain things. It’s easy to get hurt wet etc. makes you think.

Hey Sintax, I recently got a gear sling which is basically a mini hammock that I hang underneath my big hammock that I can emptying my pack into. It keeps all my stuff readily accessible and off the ground and I can reach it while laying in my hammock. Not sure if you have ever tried on but it has revolutionized my hammock camping experience because what to do with all my gear at camp has been an issue without a tent to put it all in. Just a tip. Thanks for the great videos.

Hey Sintax, great vid. Too bad about the soaker on that first stream, though, it looked cold. It reminded me of something you might want to try. Years ago I planted trees in northern British Columbia and because we crossed so many streams in a day, we started to (sort of) pole vault over them. Sounds crazy but it works, I promise. You find a decently long pole and then find a narrow spot in the stream where the bank you leave from is higher than the bank you land on. Then you jam the end of the pole between the rocks in the stream bed, take hold of the pole an push off. Your momentum arcs you over the stream in a way that better resembles a controlled fall than proper athletic vaulting. Works like a charm, keeps the feet dry and it's good fun too.

That trail system is run by Bronson Pinchot, who regularly offers hikers an espresso, which he makes himself in the back. so if he offers you one, don't be stupid,.. take it,.. as it is no trouble.

Hey Sintax, OOPSIE 😬 somehow I hit the send button before I got to actually comment "ugh" lol but I hope you're doing well.
I just wanted to say this video was awesome as always. I love watching your videos, you always keep it real, and you're really good with the camera.
I'm so sorry about your spill, oh my that looked painful, 😬 EEK! I hope you weren't too banged up after that. Hey, but at least you found two pretty sweet camping places when you needed them, and the best thing about your adventure is that it's your hike you planned out your route and you can change it whenever you want, if you want to take your time and take in all the nature around you and sleep in then that's exactly what you should do. I thought it was awesome how after you slept in how you were able to look at your map and find an alternate route so you could make up time "smart thinking."
Normally the rain makes me sleep better and I bet that's what happened with you, it was nice and warm in your comfy hammock. Bahahaha
I have a problem with using a compass, the problem is I can't figure it out "ugh" lol.
I can use a road map "no problem" with the hiking map ugh I kinda get confused a little not going to lie I know north south east and west it's everything else I can't figure out, lol. Anyways I thought you did superbly 😉
I thought the burgers looked good but then you made the pizzas 🍕 yum yum yum lol they looked so delicious 😋 emm emm, lol.
After Mike told you to get all the wood first before you start the fire and he gave you this awesome gift, I was wondering do you have any videos of you and Mike backpacking together?
Thank you so much for sharing these awesome videos, they're pretty awesome.
    KEEP ADVENTURING
    GOD BLESS YOU
    🤗 HUGS 🤗

A Sintax camping special. I have to chuckle every time you leave an abundance of mileage for the last day. When I watch a multiple day hiking video of yours, I always think, 'Watch, he'll do short mileage at the beginning and have a lot to do at the end'. It's just funny. Nice camping trip tho, and if you enjoyed it, then YAY!

Sintax77, I’ve been following your channel for several years now and love the tips and finds in your adventures.
This is really neat to see you going through my stomping grounds on the Pinchot Trail. I built that bench a few years ago around 24:00 with some friends of mine. It’s not much but was a neat project.
There a couple of spots we establish along that creek (Painter’s Creek) but this was my favorite.

Hi, that's awesome that you're the one who made the bench, and you watch Sintaxs videos small world, huh? LOL 😂 I was wondering if y'all also made the tripod with the grill and the firepit? It looked like a little camping getaway spot.
      Pretty neat if you did.

Nice to see you finally get to this one. It's a local trail for me there have been reroutes so that could account for some of the discrepancies with the mileage. I just hiked here earlier in the week and that 1st campsite still has that junk there. I'm glad you shared it we can get it cleaned up I assumed it was more recent. Glad you didn't get to messed up on that crossing. Thanks for taking us along definitely go back to finish it out there are some fantastic campsites on the south loop and the choke creek falls are more impressive in person.

Have you ever thought of getting an emberlit stove or a titanium firebox stove. They both fold up the size of the grates and you don’t have to stack rocks.
Shawn I gotta say that I can appreciate the humility in your videos as you always show the thrills and the spills. The times when things are goin smooth and when they’re not. So that’s really cool. You could edit those things out but you don’t so kudos to you. Also, if you want to do a campfire, which i rarely do anymore because of the woodstove collection i have now, you wanna start your fire on a small bed of logs so it’s off the ground. Also, be careful with heating rocks like that that you get outta the stream😬. They can do bad things when heated extensively. Just tryin yo help you out. Maybe you slready knew this stuff. I really like the gas grill lighter on a backpacking trip! FXXX YA!!! Take care man!!! NQU

I am now turning the PS4 on and getting ready to watch this
And you with real fire cooking with real fire is trail killer there with you because you can get him started but they don't like to last
At least that's what you say about a thousand times or more

Also my good man with all of your backpack that you have
I would love to see you grab your ula ohm 2.0 or something within around the 35ish 40ish backpacks that you have nothing bigger than that is mostly required and do a little bike packing trip something small just around wherever it is that you live that's very close in the woods
Very simple like an out and back no big loops required just like to see you do one trip and see how you do it like I said you don't need to get all these new bags and everything else for something you're not going to need to do but once so you have all the bags you need just need to pick one just not big blue that's too big like I said 40ish liter

I've always been pretty intrigued by the bike packing thing. Thanks for the info and inspiration! Maybe some day :)
