I am a member of the Ojibwe tribe and a Native American historian. I have helped harvest ash bark and build wigwams. This pleases me SO much to see this being done! We use cat tail mats to insulate the inside (historically accurate and easy to make) and raises beds in a u shape inside to keep you off the frozen ground. I love the smell of the inside of a wigwam. It's such a comfort. I am very impressed! Thank you for sharing! New subscriber here! (All because you built a wigwam lol)

Okay, right off the bat... I appreciate so much that you're demonstrating in realtime that you roll with the situation instead of having some kind of perfect plan. The real reason for learning skills is so important! Thanks for the content.
I don't get out near as often anymore since old age has begun to catch up with me, but I've found that a good way to get the fire to draft straight up is to build a covered air trench from outside the wigwam into the firepit. This prevents air from being drawn thru the cracks in the walls which creates air turbulence that interferes with the smoke column. Incidentally, it seems to feel warmer as well.
Loved this content man. I like the longer length vid, and you explain what you're doing. Silent vids have thier place but I like it when guys explain what they're doing. It's useful for us new to the craft.

It is an honor to have that kind of feedback and I hope that Coalcracker Bushcraft appreciates it. I am bothered however that in reply to Ms Cambridge, a person was so disrespectful as to try to tell her what she should be calling herself! I commented on this in direct reply to her below, but there were alot of replies and I am afraid it probably will go unnoticed so wanted to mention this here as well. I realize that there is a limit to how much Coalcracker Bushcraft can monitor, control, or respond to comments. However when building a structure which is culturally significant to a living tribe and when a member of that tribe makes such a wonderful comment about one's work; I feel it would have been courteous for Coalcracker Bushcraft to make some kind of appreciative reply. Especially considering the ridiculous flack Ms Cambridge was receiving. I am in no way speaking for her, just sharing another native perspective
I make wigwams and tipis all the time...as in very often for many years. Being able to stand up, build a fire, and sleep on an elevated bed is what I live for. Good video.

Could be you're getting older and love your creature comforts. I built sleeping rack from spare tipi poles and cedar fence boards. Has lasted 25+yr. Same canvas tent 30y. Have small welded stove last 28y works great. I was younger once. Been on many great trips to Idaho and Montana. Many great memories and wood heat is one of them!
It's my pic. A 13 ft moulded fibreglass camper, built between 1968-1988. Aka "the egg on wheels", it was the inspiration for most small campers today, ie Scamp, casita, little foot........and the list goes on. The original was built from the same design as a septic tank and named after the Boler hat because of its similar shape.
I clicked on this thumbnail because I wanted to see him build that beautiful wigwam. I quickly realized it was already built & was 50-50 on continuing till he showed the Mexican chocolate & seemed to me to have never tried it before. I love bushcraft videos and I love Abuelita.
I absolutely love the impassioned soliloquy about morning coffee: I totally get it. The one luxury I cannot do without! A cup of fresh coffee in that setting is awesome!
I wish people would teach their kids some survival stuff just in case they get lost in the woods or something bad happen like a apocalypse lol or if nothing happens at least they have skills that might save their lives some day. The future is very unpredictable. That wigwam is cool.

Don't know your situation however you can make allowances for your needs prepare and have someone help with wood supply and a fail safe form of communication for a quick rescue. This is the first video I've watched of yours. I love the Wigwam and there's nothing better than a Wool Blanket or 2. I used to sleep under 10 (yes 10) wool army blankets so when I slept I never moved all night. I have an old (1800's) idea to help with Gas Station COFFEE or day old bitter coffee from anywhere, just add a tiny pinch of SALT and stir. You will thank me, I promise. This is how my brother n' laws Grandmother did it when coming across the plains to get to Oregon and California. She literally boiled coffee grounds with egg shells on top then added a bit of salt to made it palatable. Thank-you for sharing your video. Oh, the Steak looked amazing. Oh my story. I was born in Toronto Canada and my folks moved to California in 1957. I was 12 then and 73 now, so this happened before I was 12. One summer me and my friends wanted to build a "fort" So we bent over sticks into the ground and found some trees that had been cut into rounds. We stripped the bark and put it on the sides of our "fort" and it looked like your wigwam. There was an old army truck in the field so we played in both. We caught hell for stripping that bark. When the winter came we were back out in the snow in that field and saw a hill up ahead covered in snow. Turns out it was our "fort". We dug around in the snow till we found the door we had make and went inside. It was dry and only had one little pile of snow in the middle where a piece of bark came loose. Just amazed it was still together and was a good shelter. We had another special place were vines had grown up to a tree. It looked cone shape. You could wiggle inside and there was room kind of like a big pine tree with the bows down to the ground but room by the trunk. From the outside you could not tell anyone was there. I was lucky back then, you could play all day and the only rule was be home by supper or you did not get any. Only did that once ha ha. Now a days you are afraid to leave your kids in the front yard. HI . Loving the style of the wigwam .Ive been playing around with the idea of building a quonset hut for living in but was debating how to navigate the roof for more living space. My first home was a A frame & so happy to have changed that to a regular space with usable room to move around in . All you bushcrafters seem to have such practical sense in doing things to make camping fun & minimal at the same time . It gives me so many more options in building my new home & downsizing at the same time .Thanks much !!!!
Totally reminds me of my winter spent in a teepee in mt@ potosi hot springs! Thankyou God for the skirt filled with straw,the woodstove, &4 bales I slept on top of with my wool flokati. It was incredible! Too bad the h20 there isn't very hot. I met a moose on the trail,and about pooped my pants they're HUGE.I stood still ,it meandered past! Quite the adventure! Tony Savelli the smacking sound bugs me too, but I attribute it to someone I knew growing up. They were glutinous, greedy, and passive aggressive which means that smacking sends a ripple down my spine. So does the sound of silverware on plates and bowls for the same reason. And he smacked regardless of talking. That’s just a sound he makes, and I recognize it’s something I was hung up on so I tried to focus on something else.

I could not handle the smoke, especially when digging out an underground smoke trench, which directs smoke outside AND warms the ground is so doable, it is a little work, but so worth it. I would be a little freaked out if I didn't have at least bear spray (preferably a gun), a fishing hook/ wire and a small saw, so that I can build a small game trap and eat. Love your videos.
I just discovered your channel. I love it. It’s clear you have a passion for nature and outdoors. Me too. Just moved to Henryville PA to take care of my elderly mom and she has 22 acres. I love losing myself on the land. It’s the top of a mountain and I have dreams of doing something to make the land more profitable in order to help preserve it and keep it undeveloped. Take it from a truck driver, one of the best pieces of road kit you can take with you is a french press coffee maker. Just make sure the one you get has very limited plastic parts. This way all you need is hot water from anywhere, your own coffee and there ya go. The flavor is better than instant or from those drip coffee filters and since you are filtering out the grounds through the press cowboy coffee or as some of us call it A cup 'o' mud is a thing of the past. Though sometimes us rugged individuals like to chew on a cup every now and then, you know, just so we impress the ladies haha! Good video!
Erik22552 Agreed! It is not just comforting to make my coffee in my French press it's the best delivery system for my drug of choice. The sun comes up in a coffee cup. There are tough plastic presses, glass presses or my favorite, insulated metal, it's heavier but I think it's worth the weight. I generally use eight tablespoons of coffee and 25 ounces of boiling water and in six minutes I'm sipping love in a cup.
I would prefer to use a small stovetop espresso coffee pot or a percolator. But I agree about the instant or the drip. But instant is good for a quick pick-me-up and I learned a long time ago that if I use instant, never do it for flavor so, with that in mind, I always go for the cheapest and simply rough it! lol
i admire your devotion to your taste preference. while i agree with coffee experts that anonymously say dripping is a preferred method for better tasting coffee. but one of an important reasons i hate french press is its difficulty of clearing after use. i just think it’s such a hustle to clean the press without draining any of the used coffee. i am sure you know it’s a very serious environment destroyer so should never be released to the sewage. how are you guys managing it? repeated wipe with kitchen papers? it’s a serious problem in developing countries with uninformed populations. i am glad i live in a developed country that is well informed.

Nicely done...have you ever tried to use the strips of bark (natural cordage) off the saplings used to make the wigwam frame ? It saves on your cordage usage. Did you weave your horizontal branches through the vertical saplings of the frame? Another trick is to use hot rocks on a small bed of coals....Fire is outside to heat the rocks....this way you don't smoke yourself out, with the fire inside.
Kanzee You can make a sauna that way too, just dig a small pit in the lodge (empty, no coals, this is for the rocks only) and bring in hot rocks from outside. Spritz some water on and you have yourself a sweat lodge.
Love the shelter.. Lots of fire bans in my area.. or else I would try just bringing the minimal gear. I agree.. there are no rules!! Thank you for sharing.. loved the video.

That's an optical illusion. On highest resolution in .25x speed you can tell that it is a blade of dry grass much closer to the camera moving with perspective relative the to trees far behind.
Other than this lantern, and flashlight, and head lamp, portable stove, and 26lbs of meat, and this bowl, and pot, and three knives, and blender, and blankets, and portable tv , and this WiFi hot spot, what else do I need......
Yes! I knew I couldn’t be the only person to catch that.... but I took a closer look and slowed it down and realized it was most likely the top of one of those long pieces of grass/weeds closer to him as he walked by, making it look like something was back in the trees.
It was not a figure. It was the tip of whatever type or vegetation in the field. If you keep watching you can see another at 3:49 and tell it is at the top of the stalk of whatever grass that is as he is walking past it. Optical illusion. Not someone or something

40 years in the food business the secret is to making meat to come out special (jerky) is marine in a vacuum so the favor goes through the meat. The tumbler turns under vacuum. I'm so sure prize what people don't know about where and how their food comes from. PS love your work keep it up.
Forgive my ignorance, and I have plenty of it, LOL, but I noticed when you first arrived, there was an accumulation of snow under your vent hole (dah!) My question is....what happens when you wake up in a downpour? Seems like you and your fire would have to swim for your lives!?!? LOL! Also, of all the vids I've seen on tarp/tent camping, I don't think I've ever seen any of you "trench" on uphill side to divert any water runoff away from your shelter....am I missing something? I was lucky back then, you could play all day and the only rule was be home by supper or you did not get any. Only did that once ha ha. Now a days you are afraid to leave your kids in the front yard. HI . Loving the style of the wigwam .Ive been playing around with the idea of building a quonset hut for living in but was debating how to navigate the roof for more living space. My first home was a A frame & so happy to have changed that to a regular space with usable room to move around in . All you bushcrafters seem to have such practical sense in doing things to make camping fun & minimal at the same time . It gives me so many more options in building my new home & downsizing at the same time .Thanks much !!!!
That's why I always keep my coffee kit and a ziplock full of fresh ground Colombian with me. That's one thing I'm just not willing to leave to chance.

Totally reminds me of my winter spent in a teepee in mt@ potosi hot springs! Thankyou God for the skirt filled with straw,the woodstove, &4 bales I slept on top of with my wool flokati. It was incredible! Too bad the h20 there isn't very hot. I met a moose on the trail,and about pooped my pants they're HUGE.I stood still ,it meandered past! Quite the adventure! I find this man to be innocent. Real. Totally unpretentious and refreshing. He does make a lot of noise when he chews and-Well-nobody is perfect. I like him. Oh--unself-conscious too.

I was enjoying the video till the 'chomping' noises. You either eat or talk but not both at the same time. Nice enough bloke though and it's cool what he does.
Tony Savelli the smacking sound bugs me too, but I attribute it to someone I knew growing up. They were glutinous, greedy, and passive aggressive which means that smacking sends a ripple down my spine. So does the sound of silverware on plates and bowls for the same reason. And he smacked regardless of talking. That’s just a sound he makes, and I recognize it’s something I was hung up on so I tried to focus on something else.

I could not handle the smoke, especially when digging out an underground smoke trench, which directs smoke outside AND warms the ground is so doable, it is a little work, but so worth it. I would be a little freaked out if I didn't have at least bear spray (preferably a gun), a fishing hook/ wire and a small saw, so that I can build a small game trap and eat. Love your videos.

I love losing myself on the land. It’s the top of a mountain and I have dreams of doing something to make the land more profitable in order to help preserve it and keep it undeveloped. Take it from a truck driver, one of the best pieces of road kit you can take with you is a french press coffee maker. Just make sure the one you get has very limited plastic parts. This way all you need is hot water from anywhere, your own coffee and there ya go. The flavor is better than instant or from those drip coffee filters and since you are filtering out the grounds through the press cowboy coffee or as some of us call it A cup 'o' mud is a thing of the past. Though sometimes us rugged individuals like to chew on a cup every now and then, you know, just so we impress the ladies haha! Good video!
Erik22552 Agreed! It is not just comforting to make my coffee in my French press it's the best delivery system for my drug of choice. The sun comes up in a coffee cup. There are tough plastic presses, glass presses or my favorite, insulated metal, it's heavier but I think it's worth the weight. I generally use eight tablespoons of coffee and 25 ounces of boiling water and in six minutes I'm sipping love in a cup.

I would prefer to use a small stovetop espresso coffee pot or a percolator. But I agree about the instant or the drip. But instant is good for a quick pick-me-up and I learned a long time ago that if I use instant, never do it for flavor so, with that in mind, I always go for the cheapest and simply rough it! lol
i admire your devotion to your taste preference. while i agree with coffee experts that anonymously say dripping is a preferred method for better tasting coffee. but one of an important reasons i hate french press is its difficulty of clearing after use. i just think it’s such a hustle to clean the press without draining any of the used coffee. i am sure you know it’s a very serious environment destroyer so should never be released to the sewage. how are you guys managing it? repeated wipe with kitchen papers?

Nicely done...have you ever tried to use the strips of bark (natural cordage) off the saplings used to make the wigwam frame ? It saves on your cordage usage. Did you weave your horizontal branches through the vertical saplings of the frame?
Another trick is to use hot rocks on a small bed of coals....Fire is outside to heat the rocks....this way you don't smoke yourself out, with the fire inside.
Kanzee You can make a sauna that way too, just dig a small pit in the lodge (empty, no coals, this is for the rocks only) and bring in hot rocks from outside. Spritz some water on and you have yourself a sweat lodge.
yep, hot house or sweat lodge.. been there done that... actually works good if you also have a small fire that you place tobacco leaves on.

That's an optical illusion. On highest resolution in .25x speed you can tell that it is a blade of dry grass much closer to the camera moving with perspective relative the to trees far behind.

Yes! I knew I couldn’t be the only person to catch that.... but I took a closer look and slowed it down and realized it was most likely the top of one of those long pieces of grass/weeds closer to him as he walked by, making it look like something was back in the trees.

It was not a figure. It was the tip of whatever type or vegetation in the field. If you keep watching you can see another at 3:49 and tell it is at the top of the stalk of whatever grass that is as he is walking past it. Optical illusion. Not someone or something

40 years in the food business the secret is to making meat to come out special (jerky) is marine in a vacuum so the favor goes through the meat. The tumbler turns under vacuum. I'm so sure prize what people don't know about where and how their food comes from. PS love your work keep it up.

Forgive my ignorance, and I have plenty of it, LOL, but I noticed when you first arrived, there was an accumulation of snow under your vent hole (dah!) My question is....what happens when you wake up in a downpour? Seems like you and your fire would have to swim for your lives!?!? LOL! Also, of all the vids I've seen on tarp/tent camping, I don't think I've ever seen any of you "trench" on uphill side to divert any water runoff away from your shelter....am I missing something? Love your videos. Thanks.
Townsend sent me. Love the cozy feel of this wigwam and really like the idea of using a woolen bedroll. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for high tech and new stuff, but these things warm the soul just to see.
